Manchester City made their second foray into the summer transfer market a couple of weeks ago by signing the defensive midfielder Fernando from FC Porto. Having failed with a bid back in January, the Premier League champions returned with an improved offer and finally captured the 26-year-old in a deal believed to be in the region of £12m:

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the Brazilian was clearly delighted with his switch to the English top-flight, as Manuel Pellegrini attempts to win the title for the second successive season at the helm:

“I am so happy to finally be joining Manchester City. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and helping City to defend the title. It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League. City fans can be assured I will give my all every time I play and I’m looking forward to many happy years in Manchester. I have enjoyed my stay with Porto and I thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Portugal. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career.”

The History

Fernando’s career kicked off in his native country with Vila Nova back in 2005. A couple of years later, having scored three times in 57 appearances for the Brazilian third division outfit, he was snapped up by Porto on a five-year contract. Loaned out to Estrela Amadora in his first season in Portuguese football, he netted once in 27 matches before returning to his parent club in time for the start of the 2008-09 campaign.

Nailed-on in the centre of the park, Fernando has been a key figure in a run which has seen his side win four league titles, two Portuguese cups, five Portuguese Super Cups and a Europa League title over the subsequent six seasons. At Porto, a total of 232 appearances over all competitions harvested five goals and nine assists for a player who is no stranger to incurring the referee’s wrath – over the course of his career, the 26-year-old has picked up 71 bookings and been dismissed on six occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Octopus” due to his tireless running in the middle of the park, Fernando’s signing is a sensible one from Pellegrini. Last season’s acquisition of Fernandinho proved a masterstroke and laid the foundations for Yaya Toure’s best ever year in the top-flight – with the Brazilian situated in front of the back-four, Toure was afforded greater attacking freedom and served up 20 goals in City’s title-winning campaign.

It was noticeable last term, however, that City had no viable alternative for Fernandinho in the centre of the park. Indeed, in the five games he failed to feature, Pellegrini’s side drew blanks on four occasions (against Stoke, Sunderland, Chelsea and Norwich) as their swashbuckling ways were somewhat limited by the Brazilian’s absence, with Toure taking up a more defensive role as a result.

Fernando should offer City a like-for-like alternative to Fernandinho, then, and as Pellegrini look to overhaul the central midfield area, question marks will surely grow over the futures of players such as Jack Rodwell, James Milner and Javi Garcia, with Gareth Barry already leaving for Everton. Bearing in mind City scored in every game with Fernandinho in the side, his contribution – whilst failing to catch Fantasy managers’ eyes – was vital in affording Pellegrini’s attack-minded players the freedom to flourish.

If, as expected, the City boss continues with the 4-4-2 formation that harvested 102 goals in 2013/14, Fernando’s arrival merely strengthens the champions’ options. A lack of attacking potential means few will look to bring him on board but, as Fernandinho showed last term, the knock-on effect bodes well for the likes of Toure, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko further up the park.

Would be a huge mistake if Wenger doesn't buy a CF now (Remy, probably)

Just can't see Sanchez doing extremely well alone up front. Will probably be needed on the wing, by far his best position, seeing how Walcott will inevitably get injured. Don't think i can endure another season of Giroud being first choice

I agree, I think they need a few signings. Sanchez is a good one but in some regards a luxury, I thought they'd have a few other signings in first.

Sanchez is great i reckon. Don't think Ox is consistent enough to play for a team challenging for league.

You have to assume walcott will miss at least 40% off the season. Podolski the only other natural finisher but wenger doesn't seem to fancy him. Just as important as signing a new CF imo

I agree you must assume that with Walcott but I was surprised that a new striker (I'm like you in thinking Sanchez will be a winger) wasn't the first in the door. I suppose it makes sense given Wenger's faith in Giroud but I was sure someone like Remy would have been announced already.

Reckoned a new full back would have been brought in first as well but I concede that he wasn't really a luxury buy, incorrect to say that.

Hmm, I actually like Giroud. Also think he'll improve if they get another striker and don't run him into the ground.

I agree Ali, I think having some pace on the wings will help both Giroud and Ozil as it will be much more difficult to play a high line and compress the space on Arsenal. Giroud had his best games when Walcott was around imo.

Both would be ideal. They played the most beautiful football in the league last fall but they ran out of energy. If they are going to contend both the CL and PL for the long haul they need this kind of strength in depth.

    Re David Luiz

No you can't judge him on one performance. But go back and look the preceding games. Fell asleep for both Chile and Cameroons goals, looked extremely frail against Croatia defensively. I don't think Colombia really exposed him.

I take that he plays in a back four, but a centre back must lead by example. His displays of emotion are endearing but completely unprofessional. His swashbuckling roams upfield leave his side completely exposed. Failure to pick up his man at a corner: we would berate a schoolboy for committing such a sin.

The odd 'flair' free kick isn't enough to overshadow his defensive frailties (I'd love to see his conversion rates too)

I can't say where Luiz' best position is.

No offence but not sure what games you were watching. the full backs were the reason they conceded those goals.

Luiz was immense throughout the tourney, coming from someone who thought he was utterly rubbish last night and definitely seems a bit overrated by a group of people

Meh, what do I know, I was trained in the footballing ways by some Irish men who have never left the country nor played/coached professionally.

However, I'd figure that England need to focus more on passing the ball a bit more incisively, rather than refraining from berating kids for losing their markers in the 6 yard box at a corner where you're supposed to stick like glue to your man in the 6 yard box 😛

as many have said that was a situation waiting to happen, think too many of brazil players want to be attackers, Pulled it off in the past when they have had more skillful players and at least one defender who wants to hold and is good, but this time their ability was exposed.
plenty of memories of past teams, even the great ones, in 3v1 or 4 v2 situations in defence, but they were good enough to get out of it.

Are we sure that Luiz was supposed to be man marking Muller for the first goal? to me it looked like he was picking up someone else in his zone in a zonal system who made a run to the front post and once he realised the ball was going over his head he tried to return to his starting position but only got within a couple of yards of Muller who had run into the space vacated by Luiz. Very good movement by Germany imo

I don't know anything other than from watching Real Madrid to be honest. But Alonso is fading, and they need a replacement for him. They bought Illara for that role, but he couldn't hack it. Then they are bringing in Kroos, who is one of the only players in world football who could replace Xabi, so I'd think its a fair assumption.

          Two changes which I feel would make FPL even better this season;

          1. At some point during the season (maybe the winter transfer window) all OOP or POO players should be re-classified into the positions where they've been deployed.

          2. Often defenders come on at the 15 min mark and contribute heavily to their team's CS, but end up getting only 1 point(while the rest get 6). This doesn't seem fair to me. Any defender who has played over 60 mins and kept a CS should get the 6 points.

Do these changes seem reasonable? Would love FFS thoughts 🙂

          Thanks.

In a game where the only scoring categories are assist = 6, goal = 10 and cleansheet = 12 (but goals scored against defender = -2) would you rather have.

    A) 1 match of Muller (in final) and 1 match of Luiz (in 3rd place game)
    B) 2 matches of DeVrij

concerned w/ option A in the case that Luiz gets blown out again (cost me -10 yesterday)

Khedira is the unsung hero for Germany imo, he gets a lot of bashing as being a limited defensive midfielder when he is much more. I said when Arsenal singed Ozil last season that they should have spent the money on Khedira instead.

he was so good, he's pretty much living the dream after a nightmare of just about making the champions league final and now a world cup final after the layoff. he gives me hope walcott can recover fully from his injury, i couldn't believe his bursts of running power last night. and in the round before he once powered past matuidi then was set to get away from pogba too until pogba just abaout managed to bring him down. no one does that! it was pleasantly shocking.

his return pass to kroos to score his second in one moment summed up a great brain/vision/awareness. it wasn't unnecessarily much, it made a probable goal a certain goal, and that's clever play

That is the best description of him, maybe not as technically gifted as a Sweinsteiger, Ozil or a Kroos but a very intelligent powerhouse of a midfielder.

Pretty sure Kroos didn't want to leave Bayern at all and was only angling for more money. I don't like Bayern but I must say I like how they've told him to get stuffed.

great line on ronaldo & klose:

i'm sure Ronaldo probably scored his tally in less games and mins, right?

less games yeah, presumably mins too. i like the message though, so what, celebrate both. it's just a record/stat in an entire career of stories for each. a bit like messi and c.ronaldo, celebrate both

It's a great achievement for Klose and we'll deserved but in many ways I don't think the two can be compared. Ronaldo lost a few years, he around 29/30 in 06 right? Klose has played 4 WCs compared to Ronaldo's 3 I believe. Both great strikers.

ridiculously i don't think badly of fred at all because he is 'just' fred. he played like a bang average striker should against top opposition and with limited service. he was just alright a year ago since which he's had a bad injury, now he's a bit less than alright.
the biggest sadness is that a country who had romario in 94, ronaldo in 98 - 06, luis fabiano ( i really rated him) in 2010, now has fred! the scary thing is it doesn't even seem like just crazy selection. who are the alternatives? the best i could come up with was trying hulk at CF, and even that seems ropey. heard a lot last night about brazilians once over the initial shock saying the 7-1 was a potentially brilliant thing for brazilian football, a chance to sort out a system producing only freds or jos, or adrianos who can't quite hack greatness

Yeah hard to blame the likes of Fred or Hulk when they did as good as their limited talent allowed.

In Marcello's defence he had no cover in front of him and was constantly left two on one leaving Lahm in loads of space. With Oscar playing on the left in previous games at least Marcello had some cover.

Just felt Germany were going to defeat Brazil comfortably. And that an attacker would win it. Klose goes off early, Muller was too short, don't trust Ozil's finishing and knew Kroos was playing in an attacking role. Thought he'd get lots of space due to the lack of organisation in Brazil's defence without Thiago Silva. Fernandinho and Gustavo being shambolic helped too. He's on all set pieces which is something i always bear in mind for likely assisters.
