After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders over the last few days, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List moves further up the park. This time around, we assess the cut-price midfield options for the upcoming season:

At first impression, there seems to be few genuine contenders in the 4.5 – 5.0 midfield price range. As pre-season friendlies progress, though, we should gradually be afforded a better idea as to how teams are shaping up – whilst the pickings are presently slim, with few standout attacking options currently available, there are, nonetheless, a few cheap rotation pairings on offer:

Coming in at 5.0, Villa duo Fabian Delph and Ashley Westwood both served notice of their eye for goal by finding the net on three occasions last term. Granted, that’s hardly prolific form but if they can kick on from last season’s exploits, they may offer us a viable cut-price option in the centre of the park. Paul Lambert’s side rotate home/away perfectly with West Brom and with Graham Dorrans also setting you back 5.0 for the Baggies, the midlands clubs may come into consideration if they can improve upon last term’s disappointing form.

For Burnley, Michael Kightly (five goals and six assists) and Scott Arfield (eight strikes and a trio of assists) seem the standout options at 5.0 apiece, though with highly-rated right-back Kieran Trippier at the same price, many may overlook The Clarets in the centre of the park. As mentioned in our rotation article, Sean Dyche’s side alternate home/away with Hull over the entire 38 Gameweeks but whilst Tigers duo Robbie Brady and Ahmed Elmohamady also set you back 5.0, the arrival of Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince is likely to see our attentions focussed on the mid-price bracket for Steve Bruce’ charges.

Elsewhere amongst the promoted sides, Leicester new boy Marc Albrighton has already found his way into a number of Fantasy squads after being priced at 4.5. A peripheral figure at former club Villa, the wide man’s delivery could be key to The Foxes’ chances in the final third and, with few options at that price currently catching the eye, he could become an increasingly popular pick if he nails down a role on the flank for Nigel Pearson’s Championship winners. Winter signing Riyad Mahrez chipped in with three goals and five assists in just 19 appearances in the Championship last term – at 5.0, he’s costlier than Albrighton and will need to be monitored over the upcoming friendlies.

As mentioned previously, Southampton dovetail perfectly with The Foxes over the 38 Gameweeks and could present us with a couple of legitimate options. Analysis of the Player Price List shows that Steven Davis is the only current budget midfielder to have exceeded 100 points in the campaign gone by. The 5.0-priced man served up two goals and seven assists over 34 appearances for the St Mary’s outfit but it’s yet to be seen whether he’ll retain his starting berth under new boss Ronald Koeman – many are hoping the Dutchman hands the similarly-priced James Ward-Prowse a chance to nail down a spot in his XI after the youngster started 16 times in 2013/14.

Liverpool’s Oussama Assaidi comes in at 5.0. The winger’s chances of breaking into the Reds’ first-team look slim-to-none but with Mark Hughes still keen after a relatively successful loan spell at Stoke last season, a move to the Britannia could bring Assaidi into consideration ahead of a schedule which pits the Potters against just three of last term’s top eight in the first 12 Gameweeks. Swansea alternate with Hughes’ side over the entire season and if Ki Sung-yeung (5.0) can nail down a starting berth upon his return to the Liberty, pairing him and Assaidi may yet be an option. Stoke’s Stephen Ireland also sets you back just 5.0 and started seven of the last eight games he was available for last season – there’s question marks as to whether he can retain the role in “the hole” as Hughes strengthens in his second season at the helm, though.

Newcastle’s new boy Jack Colback may be one to consider. Despite moving to St James’ Park from neighbours Sunderland, the 5.0 midfielder remains under the radar due to the arrival of Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella but, with three goals and a trio of assists in 28 starts for the Black Cats last term, Colback may be a solid, if somewhat unspectacular, option amongst Alan Pardew’s first XI.

Unsurprisingly, QPR’s main options are placed in the budget bracket after the club scored just 60 times in 46 league matches in the Championship. David Hoilett was the most prolific R’s midfielder last time around with four goals and five assists over 38 appearances and, like Joey Barton (three goals, three assists) comes in at 5.0 – both offer plenty of top-flight experience which suggests they could continue in the starting XI for next term, though with Harry Redknapp expected to strengthen, none of the current crop really stand out.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is expected to shake up the Tottenham midfield. Both Tom Carroll and Nabil Bentaleb are available for just 4.5, though it’s far from certain that either will be in the South American’s first-team plans, given the number of midfielders at his disposal. Nonetheless, Pochettino showed at Southampton last year that he’s not afraid to hand youth a chance and there remains a hope that one, or both, could potentially be on the cusp of a breakout season ahead for the north London outfit.

    RMT 1st draft.

    Krul/schmeichel
    Shaw/Cahill/debuchy/vlaar/hoovield
    Sanchez/sterling/nasri/Kagawa/bentaleb
    Rvp/remy/Wickham

Thoughts on the team? Will remy start? Taking a risk with Kagawa and hoping vlaar transfer comes off.

Just reading another earlier comment about how Sanchez may be playing striker from time to time and how that improves him as a pick...It doesn't matter...Players who play wide and get ahead of the striker are FPL gold in their own right...Bale, Walcott, Hazard, Mirallas...it's a long list...it's often a better position than the striker spot.

Liverpool face a number of changes so I don't mind holding off on them. As for City, I've got two attack options from them currently. People point to their tough fixtures like Pool or Chelsea but only one of those matches is away from home (Arsenal I think), the rest at the Etihad.

My issue is no Chelsea currently but can change that as things develop.

Looking at Rodgers' transfer business, it seems he's not going to shift from the gung-ho approach, despite losing Suarez. Good point about them having lots of changes, may be wiser to wait for the first few weeks and see where they all fit in. Just have to hope they don't score a dozen before then. Posted my dilemma on the city attack above

I expect them to go attacking as well certainly but it would be worth seeing how it all shapes up, if we can know for certain by the end of preseason then that'd be handy but I've a feeling hanging on a few games will clear up some concerns.

I definitely understand your concern with City, Silva is currently in my team but I can't say he'll be there come kick off. Yaya too expensive, Nasri better value but the first one to be dropped for Milner or Navas and Aguero, in my opinion, needs intensive physiotherapy. Dzeko is the interesting one for me, relatively decent value. Now rotation will take some gametime I'm sure but seeing as Pelle said last season that he saw Dzeko as his main man up front and Dzeko scoring 16 goals, I think we'll see him start. To put it another way, in a season of added competition from Negredo, Dzeko played the most minutes he's ever done in the PL last season.

In his last 6 matches for Chelsea, Hazard has been involved in just 10% of their goals. It was a penalty.

i could be wrong but it seemed that last year when Chelsea were devoid of ideas they always fed it out wide to Hazard to try to do something, possibly with Fabregas in the team they will go through the centre a lot more reducing the impact hazard has, Just a thought.

He's always been inconsistent with his fpl points. I'm going with Fab but you know Haz can kill it when he's up for it. Costa could help his points too

Like Parmtree did for the WC, I'm maintaining a doc containing all likely lineups of the PL teams come start of the season. I've tried to acknowledge team news, transfermarkt news and suggestions from all the knowledgable people on FFS.

    http://bit.ly/1oXINR5

So far, I've done it only for 12 of the 20 teams, and it is a work in progress. I'll continue to edit it as it goes and new signings are made.

Hope it is of some help to all of you.

Good idea. Some are very hard to predict though. Liverpool for example.
P.S. Look into Haidara for Newcastle he'd jumped ahead of Santon and Dummett last season

My first draft is a bit ridiculous and I'm certain i'll swap the 5th mid/3rd striker but I just wanted to see how it looked. Primarily a 3-5-2.

    Mannone Krul
    Cahill Jones Mariappa Chester Wisdom
Sanchez Mata Fab Tadic De Jong
    Dzeko Giroud Jelavic

The players I will not swap are the keepers, Cahill, United defender, Sanchez and two main strikers. I'd quite like both De Jong and Tadic but I'm sure one will make way so I can boost Jelavic but not liking the look of the other mid priced strikers other than Bony. The only premium striker I want is RVP but falling short by 2 million each time.

I don't think his gametime will be affected until Theo returns and I will swap him out then. If anything Sanchez joining has made Giroud a more appealing option for the opening games as he will create the space for Giroud and others.

Naismith could be an option depending on evertons transfer activity. If nobody is brought in he could be nailed. Kone out of match practice and will need time. I've got him in my prov. squad.

may go with Coutinho over Eriksen.

Any thought on whos the better option of those two?

Biggest reason for swapping to Coutinho is to spread my players across more teams, otherwise is all UTD_ARS_CHE_TOT

I think City will be slow out ofthe blocks, so thats a calculated gamble i'm going to stick to.

        The nonsense with Yaya...
the fact that they won it last year might mean they ease up....
is Pellegrini too laid back to get them motivated for another big push......
        Augero looks out of sorts....
Zabaleta, Di Michelis, Aguero, Fernandinho all had long world cups....
They plays Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea in their first 5 games, and an away to Newscatle.
Can't see a nailed on starter from Dzeko Negredo and Jovetic given Aguero isn't 100%

Nasri or SIlva would be the only ones to tempt me, but as i said, i'mhappy to take the gamble.
I can't see any of them racking up a massive score to hurt me over the opening games.

RE the defence, i think after the world cup, defenders may be fresher that strikers. I'm thinking it might be a low key opening few weeks in terms of goals.
