With the new season finally underway, we take our regular look at the upcoming fixture list over the forthcoming four to six Gameweeks. First up, we turn our attentions to those with the most favourable schedules and see that Louis van Gaal is given the best possible platform for improvement, while a selection of last season’s mid-table finishers get off to a kind start.

Man United

“involvement

Louis van Gaal’s start at Old Trafford didn’t go quite to plan as his new side were embarrassed by Swansea in a questionable display. The fiery Dutchman’s team appears to be a work in progress but he still has a fabulously kind set of fixtures with which to make amends – trips to Sunderland, Burnley and Leicester as well as home matches against QPR, West Ham and Everton mean that Fantasy investment in the Red Devils still looks advisable.

With Jonny Evans fighting for fitness, Phil Jones appears to be the best of the defensive assets, and for the same price, David De Gea is a fire-and-forget option between the sticks. But the defensive frailties in evidence on Saturday may encourage many to steer clear of the Old Trafford club’s defence in favour of attacking options. In midfield, a pre-season Ashley Young bandwagon suffered a stall as his uninspiring performance earned him few Fantasy friends – Van Gaal’s decision to switch to a four-man backline saw Young fielded at left-back.

Juan Mata still looks well placed to capitalize on United’s fixtures, though over 21,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game owners have already parted company after last weekend’s blank. Up front, Wayne Rooney is the most owned striker in FPL and rewarded his legion of owners with a goal and a bonus point, but the imminent return of Robin van Persie could shake things up.

Hull City

“involvement

A solid victory over QPR suggested Steve Bruce’s side could turn around last season’s poor away form. Hull have an excellent set of fixtures on the way, which should help to ease the demands of their first foray into Europe as well as tempt Fantasy managers into investment. The next six Gameweeks include home clashes with Stoke, West Ham and Crystal Palace as well as trips to Aston Villa and Newcastle; the visit of Man City in Gameweek 6 is troublesome but the stage is otherwise set for a strong start to the season.

Hull are more favoured for their defensive appeal and James Chester looks like a bargain even if he doesn’t repeat his goal-scoring heroics, while Allan McGregor could justify his price in nets with these fixtures. Tom Ince was fielded alongside Nikica Jelavic last weekend and fired three shots on target – at 5.5 he could be a decent budget option if he retains that advanced berth.

Southampton

“involvement

In some matches, defeat seems less important than the manner in which it occurs. Ronald Koeman’s new-look Saints were widely adjudged to have defied the prophets of doom with an impressive performance against Liverpool that could easily have earned them a point. A selection of wonderful-looking fixtures hand Koeman the best possible chance to build on the Anfield performance and present Fantasy managers with the prospect of points from all over the pitch. The next six Gameweeks comprise home encounters against West Brom, Newcastle and QPR plus trips to West Ham and Swansea – food for thought in light of Sunday’s performance.

New signing Fraser Forster came straight into the side ahead of last season’s Fantasy darling Artur Boruc and may be an option, but for the same price, one can have the services of Nathaniel Clyne, whose bonus-point-friendly attacking intent was underlined by his goal against Liverpool. In midfield, a raft of prospects suggest themselves for the enterprising manager; Dusan Tadic impressed in spells (and picked up an assist), while James Ward-Prowse – fielded on the right of the front three – showed a great deal of promise for a mere 5.0 in FPL. Up front, Graziano Pelle may take a little longer to settle but did show some signs he could soon be on our radars.

Newcastle

“involvement

Expected by some to be slow out of the blocks after two seasons of relative decline and a summer of re-building, Alan Pardew’s side came out fighting and gave a decent account of themselves against last season’s champions. Despite slipping to defeat, the Magpies were in the ascendancy for sustained periods and many are now cautiously adding Newcastle players to their Watchlists in light of a set of fixtures that look mostly blue on our ticker. Home showdowns with Crystal Palace and Hull invite investment as, to a lesser extent, do their away games (avl, sot, sto, swa).

In goal, Tim Krul has saves and possibly clean sheets in his locker, while at the back, Paul Dummett is an interesting bargain-basement option if he can hold onto his left-back berth. In midfield, Remy Cabella impressed, though perhaps needs more work, and in any case, Fantasy managers are likely waiting to assess Siem De Jong, who the Magpies hope to be fit for the trip to Villa. Likewise, Emmanuele Riviere looks like one to monitor up top.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
The eleventh-hour departure of Tony Pulis provided the media with a circus of speculation, but it was much less welcomed among Fantasy fans – the former manager is credited with the remarkable turnaround in the Eagles’ defence and subsequent budget-priced clean sheets. Pulis’ exit places large question marks over the continuation of that defensive goldmine, which is a shame because their fixtures make for very easy reading – West Ham, Leicester and Burnley all at home as well as trips to Newcastle and Hull meant the Eagles’ back-line looked primed for investment.

If Palace can retain the steely resilience instilled by their former manager, Joel Ward and Brede Hangeland appear to be the best defensive options at 5.0, though Martin Kelly, at 4.5, offers a cheaper option if he continues at right-back. Further up the field, Jason Puncheon is suspended for Gameweek 2 but could be a good mid-price option when he returns.

Tottenham
A last-gasp goal against West Ham ensured a positive start for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and the new manager has the fixtures on side to ensure that form continues. The next four fixtures include home clashes against QPR and West Brom plus a trip to Sunderland, with just the visit of Liverpool spoiling the view. Frustratingly, uncertainty reigns supreme over the defence; we need more time to ascertain the first-choice back-four, with only Jan Vertonghen a definite when fit. In midfield, the battle for affections between Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen came no closer to a conclusion but Emmanuel Adebayor has at least emerged (as expected) as the first-choice striker and may be worth investment given the fixtures.

Swansea
Triumph at Old Trafford was not in the script but the Swans proved their doubters wrong. The Gylfi Sigurdsson bandwagon gets underway a week earlier than expected ahead of a delightful set of fixtures (BUR, WBA, che, SOT, sun, NEW) that are marred only by a visit to Chelsea in Gameweek 5. Outside of the Icelandic sensation, Fantasy investment could head the way of Wilfried Bony – if Garry Monk can hold onto his services, he’ll be hoping to improve on his debut showing of 17 goals. At the other end of the pitch, Jordi Amat looks likely to lose his place to imminent new signing Federico Fernandez, leaving Neil Taylor the cheapest regular, though given he was hooked shortly after half time against United, there’s some concern over his pitch time.

While there's always transfers one would like to make, I think I'm saving this week. But damn me for going against my own plan of "don't start with someone you'll need to move early" and getting in Chambers and Young! 😐 feel stupid for that..I blame late night/last minute tinkering and the big gleaming halo surrounding Yaya Toure..

    .................Begovic
    ..Kolarov - Azpilicueta - Chambers
    Fabregas - Yaya - Ramsey - Young
    .......Jelavic - Rooney - Costa

I know! What was i thinking. Was desperate to have terry. I don't like that sentence. I think the thing this season was that there was no good priced forwards, ings, bojan, dzeko, jovetic, jelavic, long, pelle, remy, austin have all proved so far a bit dodgy. Lukaku was 7.8m and sturridge 9m last season... so splurged it all on so overprice/expensive forwards and.. hoped..

Sold mata for siggy, will probably use the 3m to get aguero when I should sort out the defence..

      A. None
      B. Berahino is more nailed on but Naismith is 0.5 cheaper and plays for Everton.
      C. Pellè sucks, Remy is much better but wait to see if he starts to show some consistency.
      D. Hazard is going to score more points than Fabregas and Silva and now his ownership is even lower.
      E. Cabella looks really good, De Jong is a wait and see and Tadic is not as talented as Cabella but might be a good option. I would advise you to wait to choose between one of them but they both cost 7.5 so you could switch from one to the other.

Astounded at the short term-ism of people getting rid of Mata and getting in Ramsey/Sterling/other similar priced midfielders. I'm keeping Mata this week, and probably for the next two months for a few reasons.

    - Everyone seems to be chasing the value and riding the prices this first Gameweek more than ever. Letting one player potentially slide whilst others increase shouldn't be too much of a problem, after all you don't need every single player to be on the up to increase your overall value. For what it's worth, here are my potential risers and fallers this week, judging by the early activity (one free sub made, Chester for Chambers).

    Risers: Sigurdsson (0.3/0.4), Fabregas (0.2/0.3), Costa (0.1), Clyne (0.1), Chester (0.2)
    Fallers: Lamela (0.1), Mata (0.1/0.2)
N/A: Krul, Begovic, Taylor, Caulker, Jones, Tadic, Rooney, Bojan

Taking all the maximums, and admittedly I've been rather lucky having Siggy and Fabregas from the start (though I benched Siggy for the first week -.-), my team is looking at 100.8 at the end of the week. That's still a very good rise for just one transfer and no points hit with some good fixtures to come. You can't do much until the value really starts to rocket anyway, as you bring in 7.0s for 6.0s etc.

    - Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and probably Arsenal are going to be in the Champions League, with Everton, Tottenham and Hull in the Europa League. Man Utd are only going to be contesting domestic Cups this year, whilst the other teams will have two games a week until at least December, assuming they all make it through the Capital One Cup.

There is going to be rotation, there is going to be fatigue especially coming off the World Cup, and there is more strength in depth for those squads than ever before. City especially are surely prioritizing the CL this year? United don't have to worry about travelling across Europe on a Thursday morning then playing again on the Sunday, which is something that every other top four manager will have to deal with.

    - The fixture list... In theory, United's hardest game until the end of October is Everton at home. They've then got Chelsea, City and Arsenal in the next four weeks but as I made the point above, they don't need to worry so much about rotation, especially with the knowledge that United's own squad depth is pretty poor.

As long as Mata is fit, he will start, and he will probably score points even against those tougher sides in LVG's system. He did pretty well in pre-season, didn't he? Fabregas, Sterling, Silva, Ramsey etc. won't start every game this season because of the other competitions, whereas I see no reason (barring injury) that Mata won't play every game.

Not sure if this will get many reads, just quite shocked that so many people are getting rid of Mata. Riding value is understandable, but ditching a world-class player because of one dud performance is quite another.

i did mata to siggy because of price rise, and to use the money for other things. Buying a player you know was cheaper before feels bad...even virtually I'm cheapskate. I overpaid for lallana last season. Mata is different because everyone has united coverage in rooney. Mata didn't even take the free kick in that game, rooney nearly scored from it, and young was taking free kicks deeper. I've realised how wrong it was to rely on united being good, i might get mata in again, but your logic about no europe is what i was thinking of..but that only applies to the next few months, not now. It was wrong to double up on united at the expense of defence. Selling rooney for mata might be a choice i have to make...

I see your point about doubling up but Fab/Costa is a similar decision, as is Sturridge/Sterling, Silva/whichever City striker might play. Not sure what your striking situation is obviously. It wasn't necessarily a call to arms for Mata, just a reminder to people that presumably you've planned for the first few weeks, not just the first one. New manager, new system, new players coming in, it'll only get better.

I might get mata again if i drop rooney. That'll be a mistake maybe given rooney always delivers in fantasy football.

    Off topic:

We call a city or a Chelsea fan a glory hunter quite often. My question is didn't we all started supporting a team coz they're winning? For people living in England its different, you support the local team. But for others. I mean I started supporting Chelsea coz I liked a few players but the important thing is COZ THEY WERE WINNING. Now in a few years you'd see a lot of city fans. You're not going to support a stoke or a palace team living abroad. The term glory hunting eludes me. Its completely understandable if someone switches loyalty. But yeah most of us have supported the BIG TEAMS. We like the smaller teams but we support the big teams. Many of us are united fans who haven't seen much of history and talk about uniteds glorious history.

That is always the way. I never say "we" for any English club (they are foreign after all)
Unfortunately in Ireland a lot of people do.
You can tell a person's age by which team is "theirs" most of the time
Leeds - was aged 10 in the 1970's
Liverpool - was aged 10 in the 1980s
Man United - was aged 10 in the 1990's
      Chelsea/Arsenal was aged 10 in the 2000's
Now the 10 year olds are "supporting" Man City.

      Personally I prefer GAA.

I've read on the previous article people discussing the merits of Rooney captaincy and pointing to the fact that last season he scored most of his goals away from home. Essentially people are then concluding that Rooney away is actually not that bad because historically (last season) Rooney has done much better away than at home.

I find it really interesting that people read into home/away player bias in this way. Of course, I think most people know and accept that, globally speaking, teams, and hence players too, perform significantly better at home than away but I am talking about the idea that a particular player performs better away than at home, i.e. bucking the global trend for players to be expected to do better at home than away, because they have performed better away in the past. In the past the same statements have been made about other players, i.e. Mata is better away than at home, and these ideas often get forgotten about as time goes by.

If you accept any amount of randomness in your own football predictions (in other words you can't accurately predict what will happen- so all of us!), then you would expect to find that some players have performed better away than at home. It's a (close to) statistical certainty. Yet, it could well be wrong to assume that the player in question is likely to continue to perform better away from home than away.

Personally, I am very sceptical that any player is expected to perform better away than at home. One can point to psychological factors and playing styles, but again it can be argued than the global patterns which are observed are exactly what you would expect from a model where all players are expected to perform better at home than away, but there is randomness. The randomness is what confuses things, because when you look at an individual, the evidence looks convincing; Rooney performs better away than at home. It's up to people then to decide if they believe he will continue in this fashion.

Here's an analogy. Suppose it is discovered that Suarez scored 75% of his prem goals last season in evening fixtures even though he only played 35% of his minutes in evening fixtures. I would doubt the logic in saying that Suarez is better in evening fixtures than daytime fixtures. It could well be that the evening fixtures were home fixtures against weaker teams, which would go some way to explain away the observed supposed phenomena of Suarez 'preferring' evening kick offs. However, even if you can't explain away this case, I would still be sceptical of accepting the hypothesis instead arguing that such anomalies are going to occur in events as random as football matches.

Obviously the subtle skill is working out which criteria or patterns are factors worthy of being taken into our decision making and which are just noise. Personally, I think apparent home/away bias for players is just noise, for the reasons I've just said. It would be interesting to hear what other people think.

Right, but sometimes there's a significant enough difference for it to be noteworthy. For example, Alexis Sanchez got 17 goals and 8 assists in 19 home appearances last season, but only 2 goals and 2 assists in 15 away appearances. I think you can safely say that that's a trend which is down to more than random statistical outliers.

This is an interesting one. What conclusions would you draw from this? I would still believe that Alexis is expected to perform better at home than away but in line with global levels. i.e. I would be very surprised if this pattern continues for Alexis. It could continue of course, but I don't think Alexis 'prefers' playing at home more than any other player.

Ooh an entire post dedicated to disproving my hot topic 🙂

I think Home/Away bias' do occur, but I agree that many correlations can be down to coincidences and we sometimes extract meaning from places where there are none. Stats can be manipulated.

For me it is about playing the percentages. And if there is evidence that a player has performed much better away from home then it can either be random coincidence or an indication of something deeper. We don't know. But as the stats are pointing towards the latter it is more likely to true than false. If that makes sense.

Yes, but my point is that you are looking at an individual and drawing a conclusion, which could be valid, expect for when you look at what is happening for all players, it's not actually out of line to think that this was just one of the more extreme cases that you are bound to get even. To be fair, I haven't done any really concrete research into this so you could be right regarding Rooney and Home/Away bias. I don't think the betting markets would agree with the Home/Away bias hypothesis though. i.e. I don't think goalscorer markets reflect the bias but I could be wrong.

Silly to only look at last year's stats.

Overall, "of Rooney's 200 goals, 107 have been netted at Old Trafford."

So, it looks like a pretty even split to me. 🙂

I promised myself this year I would jump on players with form rather than let fixtures dictate my decisions. Not jumping on Ramsey & Yaya last year taught me that harsh lesson.

But I'm sorry, one GW does not constitute 'form' and im sticking with Mata rather than moving him to Fab.

How long are we giving Mata and to a lesser extent Rooney to contribute regular points? For me Rooney is staying till GW6ish. Mata has until GW3 but I have full faith in him

Mata has solid fixtures for the next 5 gameweeks, will soon have new players in his side to shore things up a bit (hopefully) and will soon have RVP to pass to as well.

I don't have Mata at the moment and I'm worried.

What did you have before. It seems you are brining in the points scoreers from last week. Vert you can do better- Chelsesa defender or Gamble on a united defender if u think they will improve soon (I do not- they HAVE to sign a right back and at least one really good CB). Otherwise good, but consider whether it is necessary.

Mata to Siggy and Jovetic to Costa

I'm a Sunderland supporter so my heart is affecting the decision to sell Mata a little as I don't want him to do well this weekend.

The other more rational side is that if Mata does blank against Sunderland then he'll drop a good 0.3 or more by the week after and I can't lose that much without having siggy and Costa to increase my TV

I think im giving jones, haz and Giroud a last chance this week. I am worried about united, especially given the seeming inability to sign a decent CB and unless they look significantly better Jones goes for Clyne of another SOT defender given fixtures.

Giroud, despite looking good, looks set for a fall, and Arsenal's fixtures are nt great until 8. Unless he performs well next week, I forsee a big price drop and so he must go. Also a rotation risk with Sanogo, Sanchez and possibly Vargas or another striker coming in.

Haz is the tricky, Fab is rising and Haz falling, so for me this is one good reason to change this week. However, Haz looked good and surely is nailed regardless (though so is Fab), and frankly next week against Leicester he ought to get points. If he doesnt and Fab does, he is out. In addition, the cash this frees would allow a move for Costa, who, if he scores well next week, would surely rise 0.3 again, and would start to look very good.

Just airing my thoughts as I am not sure what to do.

Early on is where seasons are made or broken. Think back to those who did not get Ramsey or Yaya in last season. There are a plethora of other options, and if it looks like the three I named are not performing then I don't want them. Giroud, I would get back in GW8 when fixtures turn, Jones if united sign more players, but why hold on to players, who two weeks in a row have performed badly, and their replacements have performed well. It is no like you knee-Jerk to Cattermole, but the replacements are established players.

B could be spectacular, but it's the riskiest of the three. I think it's a toss up between A and C, leaning towards Rooney. Costa's main attribute is his strength, and Morgan and Moore are a pair of man mountains - bullied Lukaku out of the game at the weekend.

Hazard. Leicester at home. Come on peeps. He got you 200 points last season. He deserves another chance!

He also frustrated the f**king life out of me last season.

      But you're right.

What do people think about possibly switching Silva or Sterling to Fabregas for this weeks upcoming fixtures? If so, which 1 would be better?

I had an okay week this GW however could you please choose an option to help me make a decision

    DDG Guzan

    Lovren Chester Naughton Moore Naylor

    Ramsey Cazorla Hazard Young Marney

    Costa Rooney Dzeko

    Should I :
    A) Naughton to Kelly
    B) save ft
    C) Cazorla to Siggy or Sterling
    D) Do both for a -4

    Any ideas would be appreciated

    TIA
