Technical Area

Chelseaโ€™s Monday night meeting with Burnley saw a trio of players handed their league debuts for the Blues, with Thibaut Courtois, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa afforded their first starts for the club. After racking up an impressive 3-1 win over the promoted side, the London club are already picking up plenty of new investors ahead of three very favourable home matches in the next five, with Leicester, Swansea and Villa all poised to make their way to Stamford Bridge.

In our second Technical Area piece of the 2014/15 season, we take a look at just how Costa and Fabregas fared as Jose Mourinhoโ€™s title favourites got their season up and running.

โ€œchelseaโ€

As the average position map from Chelseaโ€™s win at Burnley shows, Costa (number 19) was less advanced when in possession than either of the widemen, Andre Schurrle (number 14) and Eden Hazard (number 10). The summer signingโ€™s hard work up top meant both Hazard and Schurrle managed more touches in the final third (45 and 34 respectively), while Costaโ€™s 32 was just six more than Fabregasโ€™ (number 4) tally of 26 โ€“ highlighting how advanced the Spaniard found himself on the ball, in spite of a starting berth in the double-pivot. Indeed, his central midfield partner Nemanja Matic registered just six by comparison.

The conductor in the centre of the park, Fabregas was ever available to his team-mates โ€“ he registered 111 touches and received a pass every 1.2 minutes, quicker than any other Blues player. Impressively, Fabregas and Costa were first and second respectively for passes received in the opposition half (44 and 40); an indication of just how crucial they will both be to Mourinhoโ€™s gameplan.

Unsurprisingly, Fabregas created more goal-scoring opportunities than any Chelsea team-mate โ€“ three key passes and a couple of through balls helped him serve up a pair of debut assists. Like Hazard, he failed to register a single attempt at Turf Moor, though did manage four touches inside the box (only one fewerย than Hazard and Costa) and still endeavoured to serve up an 11-point return for his Fantasy Premier League owners, with his creativity looking difficult to ignore.

When compared to other forwards, Costaโ€™s stats indicate he is exactly the type of industrious character required to lead the line for Mourinho. A total of 72 touches was second amongst strikers for the Gameweek behind Marouane Chamakhโ€™s 73 for Palace โ€“ to put that into perspective, he averaged 1.3 minutes per touch, compared to Fernando Torres (1.8), Demba Ba (2.2) and Samuel Etoโ€™o (2.4) from the previous season.

Amongst forwards, Costaโ€™s 24 passes received in the final third was equalled by Saido Berahino and bettered only by Steven Naismithโ€™s 25 โ€“ two players who were fielded in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind a lone forward for their respective clubs at the weekend. This is a by-product of his tendency to drop into the deeper positions and led to him making just five touches inside the box, though thereโ€™s an argument that, after going 3-1 ahead, the Blues went into cruise control and simply contained their opponents for the rest of the match.

Whilst Andre Schurrle managed five attempts over the 90 minutes thanks to some speculative long range efforts, Costa kept his efforts constrained to inside the area โ€“ the Spain international fired two shots against The Clarets and sparked Chelseaโ€™s comeback by bagging the equalizer after Scott Arfield had fired the hosts ahead. This backs up last termโ€™s stats, where he scored all but one of his 27 goals for Atletico from inside the box, again highlighting an unselfish streak that is likely to see him find a team-mate rather than take a chance from distance. Indeed, Costa chalked up a highly impressive 95.5% pass accuracy in the final third on Monday.

Surprisingly, in spite of his physical presence, Costa isnโ€™t too great in the air. Last season in La Liga, he won just 26% of aerial challenges and this continued at Turf Moor, with just three successful from 10 attempts.

Nonetheless, the pairโ€™s overall contribution to the team cause shows exactly why Mourinho was so willing to splash the cash over the close-season. Fabregasโ€™ stats underline his Fantasy potential regardless of that deep-lying position alongside Matic and, although itโ€™s early days, Costaโ€™s disciplined displays as the lone forward could well prove beneficial to the likes of Hazard. The Belgian had the freedom to torment Burnley with nine successful dribbles on Monday evening but, as mentioned, failed to fire a single attempt. With Costa alongside him, though, Hazardโ€™s involvement in the final third certainly wasnโ€™t diminished, which suggests he will be as potent as ever once his match sharpness is up to scratch.

Regular 2 pointer in my opinion. Plays too deep to gain many points going forward and Utd will concede goals this season (As stated by LVG).

Think he'll be a key player for Utd but not a good FPL player.

So the whole Fabregas, Sterling & Mata saga is like a love story where the lover is still in the phase of deciding whether to committ 100% to the relationship but definitely doesn't want to let go. Fabregas is like the person you're affair is starting with, you want to be with her the most, and are willing to spend less time with your Wife (Mata), and as a result the releationship is taking it's toll and is on the verge of breaking. Then you meet Sterling and can't decide whether your affair should be with Fabregas or Sterling, added to the fact you're not 100% sure you want to ditch your wife yet because she may still give you a bit of happiness. This is basically a 2 way affair with the wife in middle, but who will you choose? The Wife, The Mistress or The Maid?

    Boom!

As a Hazard owner, I certainly feel everyone's Hazard/Fabregas pain this week. For what it's worth, I have spent a lot of time looking at the underlying stats from the game against Burnley and I can assure you that there are many positive things we can take away from his performance.

    STATS

Apart from 9 succesful dribbles (Costa/Fabregas had 3), he also had the same number of touches in the penalty box as Diego Costa (5) and the most succesful passes in the final third (29, compared to 15 by Fabregas). The downside is that in terms of goal threat, he had exactly the same number of attempts on goal as Fabregas (0).

    PENALTY

At the moment, we assume that Hazard will continue to take penalties for Chelsea; In the game against Burnley, Chelsea had a penalty unfairly disallowed. Assuming he is still on penalties/took the penalty succesfully, he'd have had enough points for the Hazard/Fabregas debate to have never come into question.

    ARMBAND

I think that the underlying stats are more than enough to make him a worth candidate for the armband this week. In terms of goal threat, only Schürrle, Diego Costa and Ivanovic looked more dangerous - and they all got one! I own Diego Costa, but I am still going to go with Hazard (C) - as the number of people getting excited about Fabregas can only help me gain rank (as a decent little captain differential).

    DISCLAIMER

If it turns out that Hazard has lost penalty duties to someone else, I'd be all over Fabregas like a cheap suit. I think there is a strong argument for owning both, but that's difficult whilst carrying Costa and Chelsea defender (which is more important IMO). As soon as Aguero gets more than 30 minutes, I may consider Costa --> Aguero, in order to bring Fabgregas in as well.

Good post. Agreed regarding penalty duties being a big factor. I suppose we just need to wait and see. I'm certainly not discouraged by Hazard's Burnley performance, but if Cesc has penalties then I'll probably bring Cesc in for Hazard and, like you, Aguero for Costa.

"Here is a list of the pre-season bandwagons that, on current evidence, don’t look like good Fantasy options anymore. For some it’s not about performance. Players like Ben Davies, Felipe Luis and Stevan Jovetic don’t look 100% nailed on anymore, which is the main reason they’re on the list to boot. For each I’ve listed similarly priced replacements that on current form look like better prospects."

They're essentially GW1 failures that, IMHO, don't look like good fantasy options anymore.

Hi fellas, Its a very important question for which I see the answer from you If you understand the price changes from totalfpl/fiso or any other site I'm not aware off

Will Siggy Rise tonight and Will Naughton fall tonight ?

How much more transfers or % they need in order to rise/fall in price

Yes, the new price rise/fall system means that for a player to get a second price rise in a week they need to reach twice the NTI, ie. 200%. Siggy is 229.1% (FISO).

Looks likely, Naughton is on -83.3%, only 16.7% away from a price drop.

he could, like madrid last season and argentina. mata and rooney would have to be the wide men, i think both can (i dont like when people say mata cant play wide, he just sucks in a wide role in a 442, plenty of awesomeness for spain, chelsea and valencia in attacking winger role) but it would be a bit of a waste too

can someone explain football positions to me please?

I understand 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 but when a team plays 4-3-3 do the wide midfielders play more attacking roles (like wing halves) or are they more defensive and the centre midfielder plays up?

          i assume it varies?

4-3-3 can easily revert to 4-5-1 when you haven't the ball. Left and right attackers can drop back or press to regain possession.

Just submitted a document to my supervisors for my PhD. the last one i submitted got me a meeting to discuss how poor it was. So wish me luck for this one.

Now thats done i can focus on my team. Key decisions this week? Play Caulker/ Bruce / Hutton and captain Hazard or Costa?

Would be fun to have a second team whereby you can only buy players if they blanked the week before. (I.e if a player gets more than 3 points, you're not allowed to sign him the following week)

It'd definitely get you thinking more about future returns instead of chasing points and bandwagons.
