Diego Costa grabs a hat-trick as Chelsea’s 100% record continues with a victory over the Swans. Graziano Pelle bags a brace as Southampton consign Alan Pardew to misery, Sergio Aguero nets again as City earn a draw at the Emirates, Spurs’ Nacer Chadli strikes his third of the season at Sunderland, while Kevin Mirallas and Romelu Lukaku fire Everton to the points at the Hawthorns.

Costa and Cesc Run Riot
Chelsea’s summer signings continue to make the difference for Jose Mourinho and Fantasy managers alike. For the second week running, Costa shrugged off a hamstring problem to deliver a devastating points haul. A superb hat-trick against Swansea took his tally to an incredible seven goals in just four appearances. Fabregas’ pair of assists means he has already produced six since the start of the season, and while the Blues back-line seem incapable of delivering clean sheets, their two La Liga acquisitions look irresistible options in the final third. Eden Hazard owners, though, may be reconsidering their options after the Belgian failed to get amongst the points, leaving his tally at one goal and a single assist thus far.

Pelle at the Double
Southampton’s summer signing looks to have settled into scoring form at St Mary’s, after netting twice in a comfortable home win over Newcastle. Pelle had scored in each of his side’s last two matches in all competitions and took advantage of a backline that shipped three to Palace last time around – at just 7.5, he has a trip to Swansea and three very favourable home fixtures (QPR, SUN, STO) in the next five to maintain his rise to Fantasy prominence. While Dusan Tadic earned just an assist, Morgan Schneiderlin continues to looks revitalised under Ronald Koeman – the 5.6-priced midfielder grabbed his third goal of the campaign, already bettering last term’s two-goal haul.

Wilshere Sparks Gunners
A goal and assist from the England international helped Arsenal come from behind to secure a home draw with City. Handed his third start of the season in the centre of the park, Wilshere’s appeal is somewhat limited given the numerous options available in the Gunners midfield though at 6.4, with a 4% ownership, he could be one to consider for those shopping on a budget. Alexis Sanchez’ second consecutive strike and Aaron Ramsey’s assist kept their points ticking over as Arsene Wenger’s side prepare to head to Villa next weekend. Danny Welbeck missed a gilt-edged opportunity to score a debut goal and was eventually withdrawn late on – Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match that his departure was due to cramp.

Debuchy Blow Revives Chambers
Elsewhere, the injury to Mathieu Debuchy looks set to bring Calum Chambers back onto our radars. The Frenchman suffered an ankle sprain in the second period, with Arsene Wenger sounding pessimistic in his post-match analysis. Chambers would be the obvious beneficiary of any term of absence for Debuchy and would present potential value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Arsenal are, however, yet to keep a clean sheet this season and their back-four has looked vulnerable. With Spurs and Chelsea in the next three, this is perhaps not a time to take a gamble on Wenger’s rearguard.

Aguero in the Goals Again
The Argentine struck for the third time in four appearances in yesterday’s lunchtime encounter at the Emirates. Aguero atoned for the Gameweek 3 blank at home to Stoke by netting the opener, and having also scored against Newcastle and Liverpool, looks in bloom as the champions prepare for a crucial Etihad clash with Chelsea. With Stevan Jovetic out through injury yesterday, Edin Dzeko owners were dealt a blow as the Bosnian warmed the City bench in a 4-2-3-1 set-up – even though Manuel Pellegrini had just two fit strikers to choose from, then, it seems Dzeko’s pitch time is under question. Elsewhere, Yaya Toure was preserved in yesterday’s encounter due to international exertions and City’s looming Champions League tie in Munich.

Chadli Stands Out
It’s three goals in as many appearances for the Belgian after he bagged an early opener in yesterday’s draw at Sunderland. Owned by less than 5% of FPL managers, Chadli strengthened his claim as the most appealing route into Mauricio Pochettino’s attacking midfield trio. Although Christian Eriksen – who was fielded centrally yesterday – also got amongst the goals, Chadli’s 6.1 price tag looks tempting as Spurs welcome West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle to the Lane in the next five Gameweeks.

Black Cats Middle Men Come Good
Seb Larsson picked up the Fantasy returns for the third time in four Gameweeks as Sunderland fought back to claim a point against Spurs. The Swede now has a goal and two assists to his name so far, though Adam Johnson’s strike also brought the wide man onto our radars ahead of a trip to Burnley and back-to-back home clashes with Swansea and Stoke in the next three. Steven Fletcher was omitted from the squad for tactical reasons, allowing Connor Wickham the lone forward role as Gus Poyet reshuffled his side in order to accommodate new boy Ricardo Alvarez on the flank.

Ulloa Fires Foxes to Victory
While strike partner David Nugent continues to toil for the Championship winners, Leicester’s summer signing from Brighton seems tailor-made for the top-flight. Leonardo Ulloa’s winner at Stoke takes his tally to three goals already – having netted against Everton and Arsenal, he clearly has no regard for big reputations and brought the Potters back down to earth with a bang, after Mark Hughes’ side had grabbed victory at City in the previous Gameweek. Up next for the 5.5 budget forward is a home clash against United, and with Palace, Burnley and Newcastle also on his schedule in the next four, Ulloa looks primed for points in the coming weeks.

Belgian Toffees in the Goals
Kevin Mirallas scored for the second successive match as Everton chalked up their first win of the season against West Brom. Romelu Lukaku opened his account for the campaign, while at the back, Leighton Baines served a reminder of his points potential by grabbing an assist and clean sheet against the Baggies. A home clash with Palace looks promising next, though as Roberto Martinez’ side face testing trips to Liverpool and United immediately after, many may choose to leave their investment until the schedule softens up from Gameweek 8.

Clarets Defence Holds Steady
Burnley picked up a second consecutive clean sheet yesterday after a goalless draw at Palace. Having kept out United in Gameweek 3, Sean Dyche’s side are starting to arrive on our radars as potential budget backline options, and with showdowns against Sunderland, West Brom, Leicester and West Ham, Michael Duff, at 4.0, looks one to consider – he’s now earned a couple of bonus points from each of those shut-outs.

Were it not for Scott Arfield’s missed spot-kick, the Clarets could have won all three points. The 5.0 midfield option assumed penalty duties with Danny Ings off the pitch – the striker picking up a hamstring injury in the first half. As expected, George Boyd earned a full 90 minutes for Burnley – the club’s record signing clearly presents a viable option as a midfield “enabler” given his lowly 4.4 price tag.

Resilient Villa Stun Anfield
Gabby Agbonlahor’s early winner helped Paul Lambert’s side up to second with a 1-0 win at Liverpool. After four rounds of matches, Villa have conceded just a single goal, with yesterday’s win all the more impressive given that captain Ron Vlaar missed out with a calf complaint. As their performance suggests, the Midlands side have the form to overcome their fixtures right now, though with Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Everton in the next four, the schedule remains a real deterrent.

Sterling Protected in Reds Loss
One of the favourites for this week’s Captain Poll, the Liverpool youngster was afforded just 30 minutes by Brendan Rodgers. Yesterday’s omission from the starting XI is somewhat disconcerting for Sterling’s owners – over 299,000 FPL managers drafted him in prior to the weekend deadline but, having featured for England last week, Sterling’s minutes are clearly being managed by his manager. With the Champions League also set to commence this week, Rodgers may start to rotate more often in order to cope with the schedule.

I had him captain in UFPL and still took a decent drop in rank. A long way to go in this game so don't ditch it yet. Hard to make up rank when people have transfers at the disposal, now the squads are locked out, loans costing points, gains can be made. 1k a month prize so always work sticking with it

Thoughts on WC'ing Team A to Team B chaps? Don't NEED to do it but the second team does look well set for the next 6.

    ORIGINAL TEAM
    Begovic (Gilks)
    Clyne, PVA, Caulker (Coloccini, Wisdom)
    Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy, Ramsey (Marney)
    Costa, Rooney, Pelle

    WILDCARD TEAM
    Forster (McCarthy)
    Clyne, Naylor, PVA (Wilson, Duff)
    Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy, Chadli (Boyd)
    Costa, Falcao, Aguero

Pelle should rise this week, but will he rise tonight or tomorrow already?

I'm hoping that Rooney can do enough today to earn a rise back to 10.5 to save me 0.1 before getting on the Pelle wagon before he rises. Tough to get the timing right without the price sites working :/

      Pelle won't rise yet surely?

I actually think his price for Saints striker is slowing down the transfers in... I mean most strikers in that bracket are 6.0m - if that makes sense.

What do you mean? Him and Welbeck are the two outstanding 6-8m options right now. He's also the 5th most transferred in played today according to NTI's on TFPL

Realistically if you didnt captain Costa you cant really regret it. Goes against basic logic of fantasy football. He was a 'doubt' last two weeks even though mou was playing mind games we arent to know.

Best captain choice this week was rooney.

      Exactly.

I captained Tadic due to uncertainty with Costa and Sterling, but Rooney's form kept me from choosing him. As captain twice already he's only got 1 goal and a blank so I avoided him.

            x + y = z

            x - guranteed starter
            y - club captain
z - best fff captain choice

            Simple formula.

              a + b = c

a = guaranteed starter (or not even on bench)
b = form striker in FPL
c = best captain choice (with a safe vc on z)

              Better formula.

              😉

I captained him, but VC'd Aguero - logic was, if he wasn't fit, he wouldn't start & less likely to come off the bench... if he was fit he would start. In some ways, a 75% chance of playing flag is a great test of the VC functionality.

I can promise the potential sale was not the reason behind him being benched - it was his distribution compared with Federici under Adkins style. 2 outstanding keepers Reading had/have.

Anyway, my main concern was match fitness when I mentioned this. Just saying thats all

      1. Richd
        • 13 Years

Plus preseason they had an equal crack and Federici was better.

Just be cautious, I dunno if he's gonna be number 1 this season - but a great prospect.

      2. The Finnisher
        • 14 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Adkins came out and said it wasn't the reason for benching him after loads of speculation that he wanted out and PL teams wanted him, IMO it was just a generic response to keep the fans and Federici happy.

Federici played 2 games all last season under Adkins, and I can say as an Australian he is not very good at all - not even top 4 and that is saying something given how bad we are at the moment.

    Best option here fellas?

    A) Save and get Costa for free next week

    B) Hazard & Rooney -> Chadli & Aguero (4 points) - leaves enough cash for Ade -> Costa next week

    C) Terry & Hazard -> Baines & Tadic (4 points) - leaves enough cash for Ade -> Costa next week

    Terry, Clyne, Chambers
    Sanchez, Hazard, Ramsey, Siggy

    Thoughts for this morning:

    - Hazard owners - sticking or twisting?

I already have Fab & Costa, but have rubbish defence & bench... so thinking of Hazard > Eriksen early this week to avoid hazard's decrease & catch Eriksen's (probable) increase... that 0.2m in the current climate is equivalent to about 0.5m in last year's market... plus leaves 2 FT's & 2.1m for the next week.

    - Emergence of viable budget options:

Liking the look of some of the cheaper options coming up - Ulloa, Chadli, Zaha & especially - CALUM CHAMBERS! nailed on for arsenal now at only 4.5m, with Wenger surely set to focus on tightening up at the back after leaking so many goals in first 4 games - don't forget, that defence kept nearly 20 CS's last year... Hutton, Duff & Moore also looking great value & super ways of shoe-horning in the likes of Aguero/Falcao/Costa etc. up front

    1. Concrete
      • 11 Years
      11 years, 6 months ago

He has good stats but they're not turning into points. He's going to drop in price isn't he! With City up next I'm thinking of twisting to Sanchez or Chadli. What do you think?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Still not sold on Sanchez, probably wrongly. I think Ramsey & now Wellbeck offer similar points for much cheaper. Theo Walcott is back soon too - he is one of my all time favourite FPL players, an absolute points machine, so you might be better going for Eriksen in the meantime!

Ditch Hazard for sure since you have Fab and Costa. Don't go for Eriksen go for Lamela or Chadli. Eriksen will not rise 0.2 for sure. He may not rise at all (1 goal in 4 is not that impressive). Chambers will be a good pick but wait for Debucy news and Arsenal's fixtures to improve.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Yeah? Why Lamela or Chadli? I know Chadli has been performing well, but he looks too good to be true at that price, shirley Pock will look at rotating him with Lennon or Townsend, no?

Lamela, fair enough, can see how he could potentially explode with points, but Eriksen looks like Spurs' version of Lallana from last year, and the goal will have given him great confidence.

I just know the minute I sell Terry, he will score in a big game like City away but I have to think long term right? Chelsea have tough fixtures, CL games coming up and rotation will kick in. Also Chelsea's new attacking style will see them have less CSs in general. There won't be many 1-0 wins this season.

    Terry owners keeping?

Probably not - CHE looking ropey at the back in addition to all the points you already mention.

None of the big hitting defenders appeal though (Baines in a few weeks perhaps), so looking at a downgrade to fund getting Costa/Aguero (Costa, ugghhhh))

Mourinho knows Citeh at home is a whole different level of difficulty and he will make sure he doesn't lose the game. Thats what he would have thought last year. Now with all that quality, Chelsea don't need to park the bus as they did last year since they have a real striker now. I think Chelsea will try to win. A win opens a huge gap early in the season setting them up perfectly for winter champions. I see 2-1 Chelsea.

its hard to line up transfers 2 weeks in advance as anything could scupper your plans......... as EF says tho, those kind of players should be brought in for the long haul or not at all

Sure, I have a pretty strong team and can't foresee any urgent trades as I'll have a strong bench. May also captainBaines in the absence of a clear choice

    Krul - Foster
    Terry - Clyne - Chester - Wilson - Hutton
    Fabregas - Rambo - Sterling - Siggy - Marney
    Rooney - Costa - Jovetic

Hello everyone! 1 FT available. Was thinking Jovetic ---> Welbeck after the midweek games have been played. How does that sound? Need to get rid of Terry soon enough too, but surely that isn't worth a hit?

Cheers and thanks for any input

And yeah Terry can be downgraded, but don't do a -4.

Why not play 442 and get rid of Terry now? Doubt you're gonna play him anyway this week.

Not sure my defence is strong enough to play 4-4-2! And Jovetic is a long term problem. Torn between Pelle and Welbeck as a replacement for Jovetic...

Thoughts on my wildcard team? Do you think its too weak in defence? Any suggestions would be great!

    Heaton (Hamer)
    Bertrand Jagielka Wilson Taylor Moore
    Ramsey Sterling Fabregas Siggy Marney
    Costa Aguero Pelle

    0.4 in the bank

    Thanks guys

Not too sure about Wilson anymore, if Stoke continues to concede goals and lose then Huth might be given a chance

I only saw highlights, but he didn't look that good run. Was a pretty lucky goal.

Rodgers say he'll protect Sterling from burn-out but what does that mean to FPL Managers with both ECL and England games on the schedule as well?

    September
    Tue - 16 Ludogorets (H) - ECL
    Sat - 20 West Ham (A)
    Tue - 23 Middlesbrough (H) - Carling Cup
    Sat - 27 Everton (H)

My guess is he wont play against Middlesbrough

    October 2014
    Wed - 1 Basel (A) - ECL
    Sat - 4 West Brom (H)
    Thurs - 9 San Marino (H) - Euro qualifier
    Sun - 12 Estonia (A) - Euro Qualifier
    Sun - 19 QPR (A)
    Wed - 22 Real Madrid (H)
    Sat - 25 Hull (H)

Strong possibilities that Sterling will be rested against at least one of West Brom, QPR or Hull to avoid playing 3 games in 8 days

    November 2014
    Sat - 1 Newcastle (A)
    Tue - 4 Real Madrid (A) - ECL
    Sat - 8 Chelsea (H)
    Sat - 15 Slovenia (H) - Euro Qualifier
    Tue - 18 Scotland (A) - Friendly
    Sun - 23 Crystal Palace (A)
    Wed - 26 Ludogorets (A) - ECL
    Sat - 29 Stoke City (H)

I can see Rodgers getting Hodgson to rest his young star v Scotland but it is likely he won't start against either Palace or Stoke.

    December 2014
    Tue - 2 Leicester (A)
    Sat - 6 Sunderland (H)
    Tue - 9 Basel (H) - ECL
    Sat - 13 Manchester United (A)
    Sat - 20 Arsenal (H)
    Fri - 26 Burnley (A)
    Sun - 28 Swansea (H)

With big games in ECL followed by UTD and Arsenal prior to the hectic Xmas/New Year schedule Sterling is sure to be given at least one game off over Xmas - most likely against Burnley - and maybe even prior to the three big games. If he's rested at Palace in November the Sunderland game looks the one most at risk.

So what does this all tell us? That 19 year olds shouldn't be relied upon to play every week and that considering Sterling is an integral part of our FPL squads that we'd better be sure we have a decent player to come off the bench!

I still don't like Sterling as an FPL pick tbh. Too expensive and he is not captain material. Lamela,Tadic,Siggy will have more points come the end of the season.

Your optimism regarding Hodgson and the Scotland game isn't going to happen. He'll play 90 minutes every England game.

      Good post.

Friendlies are a chance for young talent to be blooded not for established players already cemented into their team to show their worth. It was in a friendly last year that Sterling made his debut, knocked the lights out and got given the chance on the bigger stage.

I don't think Hodgson is going to prioritise a friendly just because it's against Scotland. If anything Sterling will come off the bench
