Angel di Maria steers United to their first win of the season with a goal and assist against QPR. Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera mirror the Argentine’s returns, while Juan Mata is also on the scoresheet in an emphatic 4-0 demolition.

Di Maria Dazzles on Home Bow
Handed a berth on the left of a midfield diamond, the Argentine leapt to Fantasy managers’ attention with a pivotal role in yesterday’s rout. After somewhat fortuitously opening the scoring with a free-kick, Di Maria teed up Juan Mata for the hosts’ fourth and turned in a performance that is set to get the bandwagon rolling ahead of next week’s trip to Leicester. Indeed, with home matches against West Ham and Everton allied with a trip to West Brom in the next four, some may even be contemplating a shift to 3-5-2 in order to accommodate the Argentine in their starting line-ups.

Rooney Back in the Points
While Robin van Persie blanked once again, the England star replicated Di Maria with a goal and assist against the R’s. Handed a role alongside the Dutchman, Rooney certainly staked a claim to continue in the advanced role – certainly, on current form, there’d be no real surprise if Van Persie dropped out to accommodate Radamel Falcao.

Nonetheless, Van Gaal’s decision to sub off Juan Mata, despite the Spaniard netting for the second time this term, resulted in a change of position for Rooney, who tucked in behind the front two. There’s no doubt such a scenario would prove detrimental to both Rooney and Mata, and bearing in mind the Colombian only failed to start due to jet lag, there are still many question marks surrounding United’s attack right now.

Herrera Off the Mark
Judging by yesterday’s display, the Spaniard may yet prove to be a legitimate Fantasy option for the season ahead. Herrera had been written off as a source of points due to a deep-lying role but the arrival of Daley Blind allowed him to shift to the right of the midfield diamond against the R’s and serve up a goal and assist. At just 7.3 in FPL, Herrera certainly looks worth monitoring if he can continue in the same role.

Van Gaal Moves to Four at the Back
The United boss admitted pre-match his decision to opt for a four-man defence was mainly down to injuries. With the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling sidelined and Luke Shaw fit enough only for the bench, Van Gaal was forced to field Tyler Blackett at centre-half, with Marcos Rojo covering on the left. While a second consecutive clean sheet is promising, it’s worth bearing in mind United have played against promoted opposition in those last couple of matches – with uncertainty still surrounding their first-choice personnel at the back, though, many may opt against investing in the Red Devils’ defence for now.

    Hazard won't be replicating last years points. The reason is simple: he is no longer the focus of the attack. Last year everything went through him, he had a right to get in there and shoot to kill. Not this year. Now is is just another greedy winger who isn't getting the ball as much as before.

        He is still a key player. And just because he has Costa and Cesc in the same team, it doesn't mean he won't score more than 200 points. I think he will again, because Chelsea are so much more attacking this year. It's like watching them when Drogba and FloMo were at the peak of their powers - awesome.

                Home to Palace is a nice enough fixture, but don't get sucked into thinking that Swansea are really tight. They haven't really deserved their clean sheets. Look at the Team Stats > Defending section in the members area. They've been quite lucky, despite playing weak teams.

      Kind of sums up the problems really though big time Charlies like Rio not giving the manager the respect he deserves because he came from a smaller club. Pathetic really you get on with what the gaffer says for that very reason he's the boss and frankly after his showing yesterday Rio shouldn't be asking questions of how anybody performs in their jobs.

              Agree. Don't think he'd be blinded by the glitz and glamour of City's bench, he's already sitting on Southampton's too much! Koeman does like him though judging by his comments. He is English though, City may come sniffing :s

          We only have a very small sample to choose from, hence just a feeling. Saints fixtures have been kind, with the exception of Liverpool away where they were supposedly going to defend more. With the way they played that day in mind, JWP was instrumental in a lot they did. Plus his set piece threat for when you do get a chance to stick it in the box.

          Like I said, only a feeling so don’t beat me down for it. You are a Saints fan so will probably know more than I. I’m going on what I witnessed at Anfield that’s all. He played 90 that day and got hooked for the home game when they struggled to break down WBA and whent he onus was on them to attack. No such problems this Saturday ab he didn't start.

    JT been nothing but a nightmare to own so far.. He is going to bite me again if I sell him isn't he?! The inevitability of it!

    I fancy getting rid so I can get Hazard in as I already have Costa and Cesc. People are selling him by the bucket load but I think it could be the time to get him, he always did go big in fits and starts. Not this week, but maybe in time for the Villa game.

    I know this is probably an awful stupid question but...

    If I have made two transfers this gameweek and taken a -4 hit, if I now play my wildcard (need a couple more changes) do I still take the hit?? i.e. does it work retrospectively?

      No, your WC takes back all hits for the GW you play it, ie you could take a -44 hit then WC and you won't lose any points.

    Can anyone suggest a transfer here?

    Krul (McCarthy)
    Ivan Naylor Duff (Clyne Wilson)
    Fab Sterling Tadic Sig (Boyd)
    Costa Rooney (c) Balo

    Thinking triple Chelsea vs City isn't ideal, so maybe Fab to Ramsey.

    Or save and next week Balo/Rooney to Welbs to free up finds to get Haz/Sanchez/Ramsey/Di Maria back in the middle over Tadic ...

    Stats are confusing.

    Just look at Ade vs Pelle in the last GW.

    The one player kills the other in creativity and vice versa in goal threat.

          The important stats like shots and chances created are very even. Adebayor might even consider himself a little unlucky in comparison. Pelle took his chances well but had some pretty good stats which backup his brace.

    What are your thoughts on Herrera?

    Are you ignoring him because he's playing deep in midfield.....because he's really not anymore. Legit FPL option, IMO.

    1. Dogba
      • 13 Years
      11 years, 5 months ago

      He's a legit-ish option. If they keep playing 4-1-2-1-2 diamond, he should see some points, but he's not really a prolific goalscorer and has no set-pieces... underwhelming on paper IMO.

      No he's not.

      he didn't have to do any defending yesterday as QPR rolled over. Thus he got forward a lot leaving defensive responsibilities to Blind.

      He won't get that freedom every week.

        Blind was staying back, which allowed him to get forward a lot. He was playing as a CM, not a defensive midfielder. Same position as ADM.

          I didn't say he played DM.

          CMs also have defensive responsibilities. But as QPR were kak he didn't have to worry about anything and played with freedom.

    Bego - Krull
    Azpi - Lovren - Clyne - Williams - Wisdom
    Ramsey - Fab - Siggy - Sterling - Ward-Prowse
    Costa - Rooney - Naismith

    My changes are:

    Green -> Krul
    Cahill -> Azpi
    Bartley -> Williams
    Marney -> Fab
    Balo -> Naismith

    Otherwise 1FT - 1.8 Bank

      I will upgrade to Di Maria, but only becuase Mata's minutes are seriously under threat, I can't see him playing the full 90min, except LVG drops RVP on the bench, but that will not happen so easy.

      Feeling very smug that I kept him. 23 points in 4 GWs. But I feel this week might be the right time to ditch. The Falcao factor. I have an easy option too, as I don't own Siggy.

      I'd go lower and get more firepower up front/midfield. If you want to spend that kind of dosh, Rafael is an interesting pick with good fixtures and attacking threat.

    Any concrete news on Debuchy yet?

    Looks like he'll have to be replaced. What do you think:

    A) Chambers
    B) Bertrand*
    C) Duff
    D) Rose
    E) Rafael (probably a bit soon!)
    F) AN Other

    * Already got Clyne, but I'm not averse to doubling up.

    Rest of my current def:

    Krul / Mannone

    Wisdom / Moore / Lovren / Clyne

    I'm sure there are a few of us in this boat!...

    I did Balotelli -> Lukaku and considering captaining him or Adebayor. However the start has been very poor and I am considering taking a hit to replace Mata (possible reduced gametime) or Wildcard. What would you do?

    Mannone, Krul
    Bardsley, Caulker, Moore, Moreno, Rangel
    Sigurdsson, Mata, Lamela, Ramsey, Albrighton
    Adebayor, Lukaku, Rooney

      I don't often say this, but I'd wildcard. You could set yourself up pretty nicely now, with some more of the probable big-hitters (eg. Costa, Fab, Sterling, ADM). If not this week, I think it'll pay off in the long run...
