Our final look back at Gameweek 4 brings Southampton’s in-form frontman and United’s improving play under assessment, while we also ponder the potential of moving to a five-man midfield as our options in the centre of the park continue to increase.

THE PLAYER

It’s three strikes in two matches now for Graziano Pelle, who is beginning to show signs that he may be able to continue his goal scoring record under Ronald Koeman at previous club Feyenoord. The forward clocked up a total of 55 goals and 15 assists from 66 appearances in all competitions over two seasons with the Dutch side, and we’re now seeing why Koeman was so keen to bring the Italian with him when he took over the helm at Southampton this summer.

A slow start over the first two Gameweeks had some doubting whether the Saints were up to the task after a summer of upheaval at St Mary’s, but with two wins and seven goals accrued in their last couple of fixtures, Fantasy interest in their assets is escalating by the day. Pelle has already seen a price increase to 7.6 since a weekend brace against Newcastle and, with excellent fixtures to follow (swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO), looks the standout option in the mid-price forwards bracket right now.

With Diego Costa now sitting in per 50% of Fantasy teams, Pelle’s displays have come at an ideal time as we look for in-form options alongside the Chelsea star. And what’s more, still with just 4.6% ownership in Fantasy Premier League, the Italian remains a deadly differential – if he gets amongst the goals at the Liberty this weekend, though, that surely won’t be the case for much longer.

THE TEAM

A change of system, a change of fortunes. Louis Van Gaal rolled out a midfield diamond formation for the first time this season against QPR on Sunday afternoon, and not only did it bring Man United their first win of the campaign, it also resulted in a second consecutive clean sheet.

Central to United’s win were the performances of new boys Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera – playing as the more advanced pair in the diamond, the two former La Liga men pulled the strings time and again for the Red Devils, and both grabbed a goal and an assist in the 4-0 rout. It’s been an infamously barren spell for United midfielders in the last couple of seasons in terms of Fantasy potential, but in Di Maria and Herrera we may once again have genuine options in United’s ranks, with the latter’s modest 7.3 price tag a particular lure if his manager keeps the same system.

However, question marks still remain in other areas of the pitch. Juan Mata may have scored his second goal of the campaign on Sunday, but his owners will have been disappointed to see the Spaniard withdrawn on the 66 minute mark as Radamel Falcao was given his Old Trafford bow. Will Mata continue to be the man sacrificed? This move also saw Wayne Rooney drop deeper behind the front pairing of Falcao and Robin van Persie – a potential worry for the England captain’s 35.6% ownership, though his 10 point haul suggests that few will be shipping him out this week.

Although United’s form is on the up, we’re still far from clear on Van Gaal’s preferred XI as we approach Gameweek 5. Certainly, with fixtures to come against Leicester and West Ham in the next two, those holding United assets will be more than happy to keep, though non-owners may yet be a little wary of investing in the likes of Mata and Rooney right now until we get a clearer picture of Van Gaal’s plans.

THE TALKING POINT

Di Maria’s display, coupled with the form of the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez, Cesc Fabregas, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Raheem Sterling, poses managers an interesting question: is it time move to a midfield ‘Power Five’ once again? A hot topic around these parts during the summer, most have ultimately opted for the traditional 3-4-3 formation this season, but with early Wildcards being wielded a change of tact might be the solution some are looking for.

The main reasoning behind this theory is simple: there’s too much uncertainty over the forward options in a number of teams. With United, for example, Van Persie is struggling to find any hint of form, Falcao is still returning to full fitness and settling in to his new surroundings, and Rooney’s role in the side his uncertain.

Alternatively, Arsenal’s only forward option is Danny Welbeck, who may be heavily backed to excel with the North London outfit, but still has plenty to prove before he can be considered a reliable Fantasy option. A final example would be Swansea, where Wilfried Bony and Bafetimbi Gomis are effectively diminishing each other’s potential as they scrap for pitch time – the effects of this are noticeable, with only one assist to show between the pair thus far.

On the other hand, the midfield assets in these sides are thriving. For United, there’s Di Maria, Herrera and, for now, Mata For Arsenal, you can take your pick from Ramsey, or Sanchez or perhaps gamble on the returning Theo Walcott. And, of course, for Swansea there is Sigurdsson, with an average of 7.75 points per appearance this season.

Whilst Diego Costa looks nailed on as the main forward for the majority of managers, there’s a definite argument that there’s better value in midfield for most teams. The problem is that it just seems to go against some sort of primal instinct not to field a front three. However – for those willing to oppose their innate proclivities – such a tactic looks increasingly valid as the 2014/15 campaign unfolds.

Not buying the "power 5" idea.

Sure there are less forwards to choose from, but also only 3 spots to fill!

I've been on the "power 5" wagon so far, but with Naismith having a great fixture this week it means benching a big midfielder. Hence i'm gonna move some money into defense instead for the next round.

I am on the so-called Power 5 since the start of the season. Not doing too badly. But I went uber cheap on my 3rd forward (Barnes at 4.5) so no issues re bench.

I don't think it makes a huge difference (3-4-3 or 3-5-2), pick the right players and the points will come in. However, Pelle may be changing my mind!

Only one that has scored more points than top6 midfielders. And three of the best scoring four forwards cost you less than 6.0.

I think Rooney will come good, Costa is moreless a must have and Sturridge or Aguero will get going soon enough (obviously Sturridge once fit), so I think the outscoring is only temporal.

This. I don't see anybody jumping to get a front line including two of Naismith/Ulloa/Weimann. And with the power 5 you'll likely be benching the one you have every week.

and even if Welbeck gets injured and Sanchez is up front, Sanchez isn't priced as budget-friendly as Michu was back then to allow a really strong front 8 that's equally strong as a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.

          IIRC

          Michu (6.0) Fellaini (7.5) Bale (10) Mata (9.5) Walcott (9.5)
          RVP (13) Suarez (9-10) Lambert (6-7)

            • 12 Years

I don't even understand why you need a front 8 that is all strong. You probably have a crap defence then. But if you wish, with this midfield, for example:

            Sanchez (10.5) Sterling (8.5) Fab (9.0) Siggy (6.0) Chadli (6.0)

            You could afford this attack:

            Aguero (12.5) Costa (10.5) Adebayor (8.5)

Without crossing the budget you gave yourself for the front 8. Or you can make Ade a Naismith and have the 9.0 midfielder of choice, or even AdM or Hazard.

            1. Camp No No
              • 12 Years
              11 years, 5 months ago

Or, by choosing someone like Silva over Sanchez, again, you can have someone like Mirallas or Tadic or whoever over Siggy if you wish. The problem is just that if you wish to spend that much upfront, your defence will look awful.

            2. Shifty
              • 12 Years
              11 years, 5 months ago

The point I was making was that Michu was a true OOP and at his price and that really allowed a flexible 352 343 with a strong defence. Other factors also included Suarez' ridiculous starting price of 9 iirc and lambert at 6.0/6.5.

As you've kindly demonstrated above, doing so isn't that feasible this season. By virtue of kind prices back then, you could have a really strong squad that is flexible across both formations. Hard to do at this point of time with the prices we've been handed this season.

Before Rodgers shot himself and the team in the foot at the weekend, I'd have expected a comfortable win.
Not so sure now, though they really need a convincing win in this game.

I'd go for Mirallas over Tadic. We've got a pretty creative midfield and I could see assists coming from over the place, whereas we have one clear target man in Pelle so he could do well for goals.

Exactly. You've gone through the bad game, you may as well enjoy the points that it will mean. Rodgers, if he has any sense, will have learnt a lesson from that exercise. I expect him to be even more certain to start than he ever was before. As you say, when Sturridge returns, that certainty might be a little reduced.

Rodgers only benched him because he said beforehand he would protect him he would've looked very silly if he started him! But the people who take him out will be missing out on a lot of points because I see Sterling notching up some good amount of points!

Members table should be able to have stats in terms of change in % over previous gameweek.

Its no use Doosra waving all these tables at us if we dont know what has changed in the table recently. If Mirallas is always hitting 10+ shots per game, but not scoring, then does it mean anything when he hits 10+shots?

Didn't the 'power 5' only exist because Michu was a striker classed as a midfielder in 2012/13? Plus he was cheap as chips.

Definitely did not work in 13/14 when Bony joined. And there was no other true OOP option in midfield. Don't think we'll have an option like Michu again this season.

Assuming most are having ramsey sterling fab and siggy in midfield with costa rooney up top..the last spot regardless of 352 or 343 is really up for grab.

Going cheap at the back means di maria vs 9.5 strikers..and imo the midfield will win

Going expensive at the back would see a budget mid vs striker and i would sae there are more value strikers around.

So really depends on how u play the game imo

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years

Yea but there lies the issue isn't it, 3-4-3 is often the default successful formation. Can be clever and try have a strong 5 but will struggle and make unnecessary penalties if you would like to revert to a tried and tested 343.

        1. money face bandwagon
          • 12 Years

haha i would say it is just 2 transfers to swap a midfielder with a strikers..with careful planning you would be fine.

and there is seldom so much options as now right in midfield? u could easy have 5 midfielder that you want and still thinking of missing out on some.

would say the same for strikers especially with welbeck pelle becoming an option..so theres really no fixed 352 or 343 imo
