Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne both find the net as Southampton send Arsenal tumbling out of the Capital One Cup. Alexis Sanchez’ goal scoring form continues for the Gunners, Swansea pair Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer notch for Swansea again, while Liverpool and Everton turn in worrying displays ahead of the weekend Merseyside derby.

Saints Stun the Emirates

Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne were both on the scoresheet as Southampton overcame an early deficit to defeat Arsenal 2-1 in their Capital One Cup third-round tie yesterday evening. Ronald Koeman made just five changes from the side that narrowly defeated Swansea at the weekend, with Victor Wanyama handed a starting role after his winning Liberty strike, and Saido Mane offered his first start since his summer move to St Mary’s.

The Scout Says: Koeman’s men are going from strength to strength right now, and Fantasy interest shows no signing of waning. Whilst Graziano Pelle is the attacking asset of choice, last night’s victory taught us that Tadic is on penalties for the Saints, and offered us a first glimpse of Mane’s potential – the Senegal international earned the spot-kick that Tadic subsequently slotted home, and put in a performance that gave plenty of indication of the verve and flair he could bring to the league. Meanwhile, at the back, Ryan Bertrand’s owners will have been glad to see the left-back make just a five-minute appearance from the bench last night, whilst fellow defender Clyne’s strike was his second of the season in all competitions – although his price has now reached 5.3, the full-back still looks incredible value as the Saints face four home encounters (QPR, SUN, STO, LEI) in the next six.

Sanchez Strikes Again for Gunners

Alexis Sanchez marked his recall to Arsene Wenger’s first-team with the Gunners’ only goal in their loss to the Saints. Jack Wilshere also earned a recall, whilst Calum Chambers completed another 90 minutes at right-back for his new club.

The Scout Says: The Chilean was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, and with the much-maligned Mesut Ozil impressing in that encounter, Sanchez’s owners may have feared that another sub role could be on the cards for this weekend’s north London derby. Last night’s superbly taken free-kick should bring the summer signing back into the reckoning for a starting berth on Sunday, however, and with three goals in his last four appearances in all competitions, and three home fixtures to come in the Gunners’ next five in the league, the in-form Sanchez is making a strong case to be considered as our Arsenal midfielder of choice right now, in spite of his lofty 10.4 price tag.

SIGURDSSON AND DYER ON TARGET FOR SWANS

Both Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer once again showed their goal scoring prowess as Swansea swept aside Everton 3-0 in their Capital One Cup tie. The two midfielders scored either side of half-time before substitute Marvin Emnes added a late third, whilst Jonjo Shelvey picked up his fourth booking of the season, making the former Liverpool man just one more caution short of a one-match ban.

The Scout Says: Though many have written off Dyer’s prospects due to the impressive early-season form of Sigurdsson, and a lack of faith in doubling up on Swansea’s midfield assets, it appears that the two midfielders are going to go toe-to-toe for our investment as the season unfolds. Whilst the latter has played every minute of league football this season, and has the majority of set piece duties in his locker, Dyer is 0.9 cheaper than the Icelandic international and has an ownership level almost 30% less than his team-mate – with four goals to his name now in all competitions, he is certainly emerging as one to watch and could well eclipse Sigurdsson in our estimations as the weeks progress.

EVERTON’S DEFENSIVE FRAILTIES CONTINUE

Roberto Martinez fielded a very different looking backline to the one we have seen in the league this season but despite a total of eight alterations to the XI, the Toffees’ poor defensive form continued with a 3-0 loss at the Liberty.

The Scout Says: Three goals conceded was on a par with their loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend, and with trips to Liverpool and Man United on the horizon for the Toffees, faith in Everton’s rearguard will surely continue to rely on their attacking potential. The main positive for Fantasy managers is that yesterday’s loss does lighten the schedule for Martinez’s men, which could subsequently mean less rotation – owners of Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith were left disappointed as the in-form pair were rested at the weekend, and will now be happier to see the fixture list begin to ease a little for the Toffees.

LIVERPOOL EDGE PAST BORO

It took a 30-penalty shoot-out for Liverpool to finally progress past Middlesbrough in their League Cup tie yesterday. Brendan Rodgers made eight changes to his starting XI at the weekend – Raheem Sterling was one of the few to maintain his starting role and played the full 120 minutes, though was the only Reds player to miss in the shoot-out. Debutant Jordan Rossiter grabbed the opening goal, with fellow youngster Suso notching the home side’s second in extra time, before Kolo Toure conceded the penalty that saw Boro make it 2-2 and force the match into a shoot-out.

The Scout Says: Rodgers has already warned us that he won’t risk Sterling burning out in the first half of the season, and with the young winger completing the full 120 minutes last night, his 47.5% ownership will now be anxiously awaiting the teamsheet for Saturday afternoon’s Merseyside derby. However, having lost their last two league fixtures, Rodgers is hardly in a position to be too forward-thinking with his team selection against the Toffees – a win is vital if the Reds are serious about their title-winning ambitions this season, and with his side turning in another unconvincing display, the Reds boss will surely send out a full-strength side come the weekend. With home encounters against West Brom and Hull City either side of a trip to struggling QPR to follow, Sterling’s place atop our Watchlist is still assured, though he will have to perform considerably better than last night if he is to maintain that position.

MUNIESA THE HERO FOR STOKE

Left-back Marc Muniesa bagged an unlikely brace as Stoke overcame Sunderland 2-1 in their Capital One Cup clash at the Stadium of Light last night. Black Cats striker Jozy Altidore notched his first goal in 30 appearances to put his side ahead, before Muniesa – in his first start of the season – drove in two powerful strikes to send the Potters through to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: Muniesa’s match-winning performance could see the ex-Barcelona defender challenge Erik Pieters for his starting berth when Stoke host Newcastle on Monday night, and with a price tag of just 4.4, could prove a great budget alternative to Marc Wilson in the Potters’ back-line if he can oust the Dutchman from the XI. With a kind run of fixtures in the next five Gameweeks for Mark Hughes’ side (NEW, sun, SWA, sou, WHM), many will be eyeing up their defensive assets, though with Muniesa now set to scrap for a full-back role, Ryan Shawcross remains the safest option for those willing to spend that little bit extra.

Pro-footballer aren't rested because they aren't capable of playing. They're not sat at home wheezing on a saturday after they played midweek.

It's about tiny margins of performance at the professional level being the difference between winning and losing. They have to be absolutely at the top of their game to be able to compete. A 5% drop in intensity loses games.

People not getting this wind me up 😉

Costa regression to the mean imminent? Currently Costa is scoring with nearly 50% of his shots. Generally speaking most top strikers average around 20% or just under for a season. Even Yaya in his exceptional season last year averaged around a 1 in 3.

The higher that rate is the more likely I think that regression will bite before long. What are everyones thoughts on that? Will you keep if his rate dips to a more sustainable rate or will you be tempted to jump ship? Interested to know what folks thoughts are. I think I know what most will say. Personally though I wouldn't hesitate to jump ship - with Suarez gone Im not sure anyone currently occupies the mantle of season keeper or 'must have'.

Suarez maintained his figures by taking ludicrous amounts of shots - his conversion rate was 'only' 17%.

Costa so far is the opposite - very few shots but with a ludicrous conversion rate.

Whether it's simply a style of play thing is debatable but Suarez doesn't support Costa's figures being sustainable. (That's not to say they're definitely not)

But taking ludicrous amounts of shots is something that is probably more sustainable. 🙂 I think we'll see him fall back to around a 1 in 2 eventually. (with possibly less than that at some point)

Costa has the second highest number of shots in the box in the league. If his conversion rate drops from superb to league average he'll still be one of the highest points scorers in the game.

Even at regressed rate I'd keep. If he drops to, say, one goal every other game, he still looks good value.

Of course he will regress, he is on rate to score over 50 goals! However, even if he only takes half the number of chances that he presently is he would still be a superb option.

When you have Hazard and Fabregas in the set-play you just have to tap in the goals, which is what DC is doing, so yes, I believe that rate will go on, Falcao could turn to Suarez-esque with his creative shots.

Exactly. Yaya's ridiculous conversion rate last year was 1/3. The best strikers have a about a 1/4 conversion rate. There is literally no way in hell that Costa is going to score 1 in 2 of his shorts.

Wait until he dip forms then i can tell u depending on the situation. Tough fixtures..better alternatives..rotation due to ucl etc all plays a part in the decision.

There is no such thing as a season keeper...especially in a season where little value is tied to a player. The idea of a season keeper is silly imo becos u only keep a player who gives u point..selling on a bad scoring patch and get a player in when his form improves shld maximise ur points whether than keeping regardless of situation

        • 16 Years

Yep very much this (and particularly applicable this season). Historically I like to sell a player when their form hits the skids. I feel it is an area that many overlook 🙂

Haha ya i feel so too. Its a risk becos some players could get back on form when u sell but its necessary to make such decision if we are to rise in rank.

Its still early to decide even if there is a season keeper anyway. Falcao sturridge aguero could well get enough form until u might swap costa out even when he is doing decent.

There are two stats that matter: number of chances and conversion rate. Theres more than one way to skin a cat. You can score decent points by being clinical or by having that many chances that you are bound to knock the odd one in. This site constantly claims that any player that is clinical MUST stop scoring soon. Its stupid. Not aimed at you just something that grinds my gears

    As previously posted...

I generated a number to look at goal threat from open play per midfield player.."The Wakatronic stats generator" a small machine located to the right of my desk......http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/09/23/the-technical-area-assessing-ramseys-villa-performance/?hc_page=18#hc_comment_8375966

As requested I have now built a further machine known as the "Adjustometer" that shall analyse upcoming fixtures and adjust the stats generated from the "Wakatronic stats generator" to give an accurate prediction of likely midfield goal scorers for the upcoming six fixtures. This shall be done by applying a new "adjuster" to the existing number.

No responsibility can be held for nailedoniness nor early substitutions.

    Sanchez 49
    Tadic 47
    Chadli 42
    Hazard 42
    Arfield 42
    Ramsey 39
    Cabella 39
    Sterling 39
    Mirallas 38
    Eriksen 35
    ADM 31
    Toure 30
    Silva 30
    Downing 29
    Siggy 29
    Fab 29

    Walcott remains on 62.....

I've never even seen him play..in fact I've no idea what he even looks like. The number is just generated from open play stats and is a number that reflects his chances to score (doesn't include set pieces or assist potential)...Nice to hear that the number is accurate in terms of potential though.

is it based on this year's stats? for eg, do the first 3 week's data reasonably predict who scored in gw4 and 5? that would be field testing these values to see if they are actually accurate

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Yep..My data doesn't even look at goals actually scored...It looks at all sorts of numbers in open play but i'll keep the formula to myself..(hence Cabella and Arfield)..and then apply a further adjuster for fixture difficulty and home and away fixtures...Simple really.

Some numbers on here for previous seasons...

I can do more if you like but it's enough..It's only ever predicting the likely chances of scoring for mids so obviously it's still a game of chance..or be it increased chances through knowledge...(and it just applies to goals through open play as a formula)

Anything over 40 seems to be a bang on pick for a period of time...

I wish I could find something really comprehensive about footballers coming back from ACL injuries.

Have obviously heard stories about it ruining careers, never getting their pace back etc, but I've also read some stories about players coming back stronger (including one exceedingly successful example, frustratingly can't remember who).

I did look into it over the summer but I didn't get anything conclusive.

Dunno about that one but I can tell you all about Achilles which has a similar profile due to having done mine....I wouldn't be guaranteeing Benteke returns as good as the old Benteke and the same applies to Wally and his injury

Ah, this was one article I read that bodes well:

          http://the-number-fourteen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/football-players-after-acl-tear.html

Shearer, Del Piero and Roberto Baggio all had early career ACL problems. Del Piero said it made him better! Less reliant on pace.

          We'll see.

Just a suggestion for members table and I don't know how feasible it is. I was wondering if was possible to apply arrows to players rising and falling in tables? Very much like in the watchlist. It might make things a little clearer and visible in assessing form.

Thinking about next weeks transfer....(already made a transfer this week)

Ivanovic > Clyne seems like a good bet until Mourinho tightens up defence post Xmas.

Marney > Tadic definitely good, but gives me a benching problem

    Rooney > Aguero or Pelle

I have no Saints players at all at the moment....and they have form AND fixtures in their favour.

Is Naylor no longer part of people's long term defender plans? I currently have Baines, Naylor, Chambers, Clyne and Duff.

Baines to play every game, Clyne to play most games, so too Chambers after his next 2 games.

Duff went up last night. Did a comparison between him and Shackell ... very little difference.

Why did I get Shackell instead of Duff earlier in the week?

I would have 0.4 extra in the bank and my TV would be 0.1 better off ðŸ˜
