From now on, we’re shifting our Captain Sensible article to a Thursday evening slot, giving you more time to assess the data on offer. Once again, we roll out a three-part approach, which takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

For the second section, we’ve reverted back to the formula from the end of last season, creating our own custom tables from the Members area and looking at player and team statistics over the last four matches as a gauge of form.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, it’s one-way traffic in this week’s Captain Poll as Chelsea prepare for a home encounter with Villa. After serving up a 17-point return in his previous appearance at the Bridge, Diego Costa has been nominated by 55% of the voters so far, with Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas persuading just 1% of Fantasy managers that they’re worthy of the armband.

A goal and assist in each of his last two appearances makes United’s Angel di Maria second only to Costa – 11% have given the Argentine the nod, with 2% opting for Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao. Despite netting against Leicester last weekend, Robin van Persie has been selected by less than 1% ahead of the home clash against West Ham – an indication, if ever, of our collective loss of faith in the Dutchman’s capabilities.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle is also highly fancied, with over 7% giving him the nod. The Italian, who has delivered three goals and an assist in his last three, entertains a QPR side that has conceded four goals in both away matches under Harry Redknapp so far. Five goals in as many matches brings Leicester’s Leonardo Ulloa into consideration as he travels to Palace – the Argentine has been selected by 3%, the same as compatriot Sergio Aguero, for City’s visit to Hull.

Like Think Tank said above, a defense of Ivan - Baines - Mangala - Chambers - 4m looks a great way to go..

though would have to monitor Ivan and whether he continues to fit in at RB in Mourinho's plans or if he gets shifted centrally to CB (making him not worth it at that price)

Hey guys what do you think of this? I know seems fairly risky and will depend on how falcao performs this gw, but swapping falcao to a cheap for like jelavic, then bring in di maria and play a 3-5-2 with my team being:
    GK: Heaton
DEF: Clyne / Ivanovic / Moreno
MID: Siggurdsson / Fabregas / Ramsey / Di Maria / Sterling
FOR: Costa / Ulloa / Jelavic

I think it could almost work and then just rotate my cheap forwards depending on form and fixtures, any opinions appreciated! 🙂

Is Sturridge a better option than Rooney and is a 3-4-3 formation better than 3-5-2?

    1. Dr Dream
      • 13 Years
      11 years, 6 months ago

As long as you have attacking options in midfield (and good ones) then 3-5-2 is better.

I've already used the example today so forgive me repeating myself. Very few would doubt the Pelle pick at the moment whilst most are dubious, or very dubious, about Downing....and yet only 1 pt separates them...go figure..!!...

If you can find five attacking mids who act as forwards then the rewards are higher.

      1. A guy
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Thanks. I've always been using the 3-4-3, but all the players in my league play 3-5-2 (I'm leading so far by far :D), but the later makes sense to me. I am tempted to throw Rooney out soon and I definetly have the money to afford a top replacements, I'm just not comfortable with having only 1 forward over the price of 10, so it's between Rooney, Agüero, Sturridge & maybe Di Maria for me 🙂

Just to pick up on the previous page...When Chelsea, City and Everton finalally get around to tightening up at the back (I'm sure all three will sooner or later)...When was the last time we would have had a CS and attacking threat as strong as Ivan Mangala and Baines ?....It's certainly not every season is it ?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years

Plus I suspect of the three City will carry the day for CS's this year...so Mangala strongest in that respect.

Could be. Then again, Hart is so good at giving a goal away per game no matter who is playing in front of him.

Stats based on last two games only are interesting. Very much in Hansard favour. 50/50 over course of season so far tho, fab obviously bossing assists.

Hazard for me. The last two years Chelsea have won 11 and 7 penalties, tied with Liverpool for the most over that span. Being conservative, that's an additional 25 points from goals + any bonus Hazard gains from that. And even from open play, I'd say Hazard's slightly more explosive.

thats 55. &. 35 over the 2 seasons assuming he scored them. averaging at 40 points per season, missing 20% of pens you would then get 32 extra points. 😉

I said being 'conservative.' Chelsea could win less this season, he could not be on the field at the time when they're run, but if he's their first choice penalty taker, odds are he'll get at least 5. He could miss, that's true, but I'm hoping he won't miss 20% of his penalties 😉

I know what's going to happen.

Mark and Granville are going to talk on the scoutcast about how essential ADM is, and it's going to influence me to bring him in for a hit.

Then again, Lovren looks due a 1 pointer this weekend, so worst case Mangala doesn't play and you get a defender up off your bench who likely will have just about the same point total as Lovren.

True, but then Lovren has a run of WBA, qpr, HUL. Surely, even Liverpool will keep one or two cleansheets there.

Feels wrong benching Moreno for Duff, but I can't wait to get him out of my team. Already made my FT and I'd be bringing in Baines. Don't feel like taking a hit.

Will you be hiding behind the sofa this weekend, then?

It would basically involve a 4-point hit for me, and would greatly affect my front line... Arrrrgh I don't know what to do!!!

Sofa job likely. Would need to sell Ramsey for a hit otherwise.

                Exactly the same for me.

                But I'm considering it.

Ramsey with Tottenham and Chelsea in the next 2, returns don't look likely...

While United are awful, they'll still be banging in the goals...

    RMWT

    Forster, Hammer

    Ivananovic, Bertrand, Wisdom (Taylor, Duff)

    Fabregas, Di Maria, Siggy, Sterling

    Wellbeck, Costa, Pelle

My only doubts is getting Aguero in but it's well balanced. Thoughts??

Considering to do Balotelli-> Aguero this week, and Rooney->Costa next week before ARS? Or do you think I should get Costa first? My third striker is Pelle
