The lowest-scoring Gameweek so far threw up some shocking results for real and Fantasy managers alike. This week’s Scout Mission looks towards a potentially bountiful weekend schedule, with Liverpool’s young talisman, Chelsea’s under-performing Belgian, City’s trip to Hull and Louis van Gaal’s plans to overcome a resurgent West Ham all amongst our lunchtime topics.

Sterling’s role in the derby…
The Reds were anything but convincing in midweek after sneaking past Middlesbrough in the cup via penalties after extra-time. After benching Sterling for the Gameweek 4 home loss to Villa due to the hectic schedule, Brendan Rodgers subsequently handed him the full 120 minutes on Tuesday evening – hardly ideal preparation ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime meet with Everton. We can surely expect the youngster to be named in the XI for such a vital encounter, though his role as a right wing-back against the Hammers last weekend was a worry – we need Sterling back in the centre and firing on all cylinders as he looks to continue the form that has served up three goals in four starts so far.

Hazard at home to Villa…
Having played a part in just three of his side’s 16 goals, last year’s Fantasy superstar has been overshadowed by Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas thus far. Hazard’s best returns tend to come in home matches (10 of his 14 goals last season), though, and with ownership now down to 13%, the Belgian has become a relative midfield differential. Villa shipped three goals to Arsenal last weekend and Hazard will be looking to replicate the displays of Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck last week after both recovered from sluggish starts to plunder the points against Paul Lambert’s backline.

Aguero away to Hull’s shaky rearguard…
Having missed the midweek cup mauling of Sheffield Wednesday, the Argentine is poised to return to the starting XI for the KC showdown. Aguero is likely to be partnered by Edin Dzeko as the champions attempt to end a three-match winless run in the top-flight, and bearing in mind the Tigers have conceded six goals in their last three league matches since moving to four at the back, hopes are high for a comfortable City win. Owned by just 9% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, this looks the perfect time for Aguero to step up and put himself forward as a contender for our three-man frontlines – at the moment, only Diego Costa has merited the hefty outlay, but if City’s star striker can stay fit, there’s no doubt he could have a significant say on our Fantasy seasons.

Wenger’s attack in the derby…
Arsene Wenger finally utilised Mesut Ozil in his favoured number 10 position last weekend – and it paid off in spades. Both Ozil and Danny Welbeck plundered a goal and an assist to help down Villa before the first-half was finished, and with his team looking better balanced, the Gunners’ boss may well decide to retain a 4-2-3-1 for the north London derby. In recent times, matches against Tottenham have been high-scoring affairs, though, and we’ll be looking for Aaron Ramsey to return to form, whilst Alexis Sanchez – rested last weekend – has now notched three times in his last four in all competitions and looks set to be unleashed against Mauricio Pochettino’s strugglers, as the competition for our Fantasy affections amongst Arsenal’s attackers starts to heat up.

Van Gaal’s game plan for the Hammers…
The one thing seemingly certain about United at the moment is they guarantee goals at both ends of the pitch. After shipping five to Leicester, the defensive problems continue to mount up – Tyler Blackett is suspended, Jonny Evans limped off last weekend, while Chris Smalling has now picked up a thigh problem in training. The Red Devils are down to the bare bones at the back and it’s likely that their manager will again look at attack as the best, or only, form of defence. It seems that the big guns will be rolled out once again as the Hammers make their way to Old Trafford – another bench role for Juan Mata and withdrawn berth for Wayne Rooney may well prove the catalyst for a significant Fantasy exodus if both fail to deliver this weekend, as Van Gaal retains his faith in Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao up front.

Palace’s attack against The Foxes…
The unexpected managerial shift from Tony Pulis to Neil Warnock instigated a corresponding focus on attack as opposed to defence. Whilst the Palace backline looks suspect to say the least, visitors Leicester have been equally inept at keeping out opponents. The Eagles have netted three times in two of their three matches under the new manager, and with their offensive threat flourishing, Fantasy managers may well profit from investing. Jason Puncheon looks the likeliest beneficiary of Warnock’s tactical switch after serving up points in three of his four appearances, though Yannick Bolasie is also on the radar, with Wilfried Zaha looking increasingly peripheral under the new man in charge. With Hull, West Brom and Sunderland in the subsequent four, this weekend looks the perfect time to assess their Fantasy potential.

The Saints at home to travel-sick QPR…
A home clash with the R’s hands Southampton the platform to kick on as they brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures. After two road trips, Harry Redknapp’s side have failed to score and conceded four times on both occasions – as the injuries pick up, there’s a real fear they are in for another hiding. Ronald Koeman’s side not only have the league’s best defence, but in Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane they sport a trio of players who look capable of cementing a place in our sides for the long haul. Of that threesome, Pelle – with just 7% ownership – is the most popular in FPL but there’s a feeling that, after this weekend, one or two of the Saints’ attacking options will surely break out of the differential bracket as the bandwagon ensues.

Moses against the Magpies…
Arriving on loan from Liverpool late in the transfer window, the wide man has quickly cemented a starting role in Stoke’s XI at the expense of another enigmatic winger, Marko Arnautovic. Moses served up an assist last weekend and is set to be unleashed against Newcastle’s dire defence this time around – can he step up against the Magpies and offer us a valid cut-price alternative four our five-man midfields? With Sunderland, Swansea and West Ham in the subsequent four, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on events at the Britannia.

the costa stuff doesnt make much sense to me at all. how can you carry a hamstring problem for so long. it's not like a joint where you have a little ankle issue for a while but can play through it if needs be. this is a muscle, it makes no sense to me. either you sort it out or it goes, maybe there's a game of tightness inbetween but this carrying over multiple weeks makes no sense to.
and yes in football terms hamstring means the muscle. hamstring, thigh, groin, calf. simple terms

I think Aguero's problem is that his quads (hammie included) are just too massive for his frame and keep smashing themselves apart when he sprints. Those legs don't have room for all that muscle.

I think there might be something to that, but I'm no doctor either. It does appear that overly strong muscles are more susceptible to tearing.

it's because you get a "scar" of build up of hard muscle tissue which makes the muscle weaker and prevent it from healing properly without extended rest. it doesn't pull or tear every time but it can feel weak or strained

      speaking from experience here

Hmmm well talking from experience i recently had hamstring injury, was 2nd level hamstring injury. I could still play football with the aid of a tight support but could not run to my maximum. Im guessing mourinho doesnt want costa to be off as these injuries normally take 4-6 weeks. My guess only

I tore mine playing football once and it bled out so bad that the back of my leg from the kneed to near my arse cheek was somewhere on the colour plectrum between purple and black.

Went to the doctors and was told it wasn't far off an amputation, had the tear been marginally worse and I had left it without attention like that. 😯

I tore them a couple of times doing athletics at school, so i was one of those more susceptible to the old hammie tear, but mine were always proper jobs.

Like you said, nothing i could have run on for months. Never had something in between.

yeah, thought he was winding me up but apparently if the tear is so bad that the blood just pumps out, the body shuts the limb down.

I tore my hamstring once and had a similar experience - awful colour all up the back of my thigh. I put some ice on it and took some painkillers. Hey presto, 3 months later I could walk without discomfort.

Wasn't registered with a doctor at the time (had recently moved) so I rang NHS Direct - they told me to take brufen and alternate ice and heat. Hadn't torn a hamstring before so kind of assumed it was normal!

I have something of a history of injuring myself and letting it sort itself out.

I put the stem of a martini glass into the palm of my hand once - didn't stop bleeding for hours. It was just before dinner and we had guests so I didn't want to go to A&E. Lost a lot of strength in my hand for about a year.

Yep, it wasn't even a drinking injury despite involving a martini glass - I was using it as a pastry cutter (we've subsequently bought some proper ones) and as I was pressing firmly on the base and twisting to make sure the shape was properly cut the stem of the glass snapped and my hand slammed down on the jagged stump.

Idiotic injury compounded by an idiotic decision to not seek medical attention. Deserved what I got frankly.

This could have been what he was banging on about...

I just wanted to pull my trousers on and get out. He was scary me

Compartment syndrome is a serious condition that involves increased pressure in a muscle compartment. It can lead to muscle and nerve damage and problems with blood flow.

Thick layers of tissue, called fascia, separate groups of muscles in the arms and legs from each other. Inside each layer of fascia is a confined space, called a compartment. The compartment includes the muscle tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. Fascia surrounds these structures, similar to the way in which insulation covers wires.

Fascia do not expand. Any swelling in a compartment will lead to increased pressure in that area, which will press on the muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. If this pressure is high enough, blood flow to the compartment will be blocked. This can lead to permanent injury to the muscle and nerves. If the pressure lasts long enough, the muscles may die and the arm or leg will not work any more. It may need to be amputated

            http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001224.htm

Would have to be one hell of a hamstring tear though!

I wonder if anybody has considered that there's nothing wrong with Costa and Mourinho is using the media as a way to defend his striker rotation policy and also cover himself in case t does end up biting him in the arse (e.g. if he'd lost against Schalke for example).

Saw your post last night but couldn't reply about The Leftovers. It's intriguing but not to everyone's taste. I'd also recommend Legends as worth watching

Give Legends a look, I'm hooked after the pilot. Also the Blacklist is worth a shout if you haven't already.

Nah, Matic/Fabregas has been the duo all year exept v City. Mourinho is also quite clear that this is Fabs`s best position. That said, it`s not like he`s a holding cdm, he gets forward regardless. And he has a fair piece of set pieces too.

It has been the combo, but their performances have been much improved with Ramires in the team instead of Oscar. Mourinho also said Fabregas can play either position equally well.

Sure, and Mourinho is right about that. Fabregas is good enough to play any position barring the back four, which he`s proved on multiple occasions in Spain/for Barca. Ramires just offers a lot of pace and penetration comparing his to Oscar. I still think Cesc will stay paired up with Matic though.

think it's based on ramires being out yeah.

if it's not working at half time mikel or willian can come on in the 433 enabling roles still even if ramires is out. at least half the time i've seen fabregas described as being in the hole this season he's actualy just been the left of the middle of a 433, which is more advanced than the pivot but certainly no #10

Oh yes. Naismith and Miralls are both great picks when the play but a full squad at Everton could easily see both benched on any given gameweek. it's a shame but a fact. The second two are totally nailed on.

Have roughly 5m. I missed out on both Pellè/ADM on my wildcard. Reason i`d want to ditch the Everton pair is because they have a small squad and both of them seem discardable due to european rotations, while ADM/Pellè have literally only one thing to focus on. Pellè can become Wellbeck in a few weeks, too.

I have Naismith and even though he may not be nailed on i would reckon Martinez would play him due to the last two defeats and the fact he has been playing some decent football.

Next week i will transfer out to Pelle/Wellbeck....

        help appreciated:

        clyne, duff, azpilicueta (vlaar, bruce)
        siggy, sterling, ramsey, chadli (reed)
        falcao, costa, pelle

fancy getting tadic in but not sure who to replace with 3.1m in bank....reed is the obvious shout leaving me short money wise (nothing to spare) but with a strong midfiled sub...but replacing with chadli would keep me pretty healthy with 1.7m to spare.

I have Aguero and Costa and i reckon they will both have double figure points at the wkend, so B.

West Ham have scored in every game this season.

Burnley are finding it difficult to score goals but are keeping clean sheets.

I would go with Heaton and Wisdom as Burnley vs WBA has draw all over it.

Utd do not have a defense at the moment, very risky.

I am always a bit skeptical when a mid-table team gets heavily backed into a gameweek like Soton is this week against sloppy QPR. Isnt it these matches that tend to end 0-1?
And reminding everybody that both teams belong to the second division of the PL where anybody beats anybody anytime 🙂

Of course look at it the other way round, 45% for a clean sheet means they think there is a 55% chance of them conceding. Still looks a bit overstimated though I agree.

In which case get down the bookies!
The top two most likely to keep a cleansheet conceded 8 goals between them.
To be fair the rest of it is pretty accurate 1 in 4 of 22,25,27,27% kept a cleansheet and roughly 1 in 3 of the 30%ers.

Getting cold feet transferring Sterling in (for Eriksen).

        1. Played wing-back v the Hammers.

        2. Might get rested for one of the next 3 games.

        3. Tadic nailed on and on pens free kicks and corners with JWP out, good fixtures and 2% ownership.

        Ant thoughts?

Joey Barton has said that Mario Balotelli is a myth of world football. Do you agree?

He genuinely exists, I got 4 points from him on the weekend.

Joey Barton is an attention seeker.

Balotelli's reputation has so far overshadowed his ability IMHO so I can see where the great poet is going with this one.

Absolutely. People always try to rubbish Barton's opinions because of who he is, the trick is to ignore that and consider what he's said. If Balotelli were quiet and understated nobody would think he was amazing.

I agree. I don't rate Balo at all.

Has moments of brilliance, but is quite a selfish and lazy squad player.

I bet Rodgers is itching to get Studge back playing again

To keep or not to keep.

        Keep
        - Clearly quality
        - On pens
        - Share of free kicks / corners
        - Southampton attack is doing well

        Not keep
        - 2 assists / no goals in 5 games for 7.5m
        - Pelle / Mane might be cheaper and more fruitful way into Saints attack
        - Saints dont win a lot of pens
        - Can downgrade to release cash (to siggy, chadli, even schneiderlin) and bring in e.g. Baines
