This afternoon sees the return of our Suspension Tightrope widget which is now available in your right sidebars under the Watchlist rankings. For those of you less familiar, the Tightrope keeps a tally of cards accrued from Capital One Cup, FA Cup and Premier League matches and the table is updated after each Gameweek – we’ll aim to share the Fantasy implications of the latest yellows and reds dished out by referees as we go.

We’ll bring you news of all the latest suspensions, along with a regular update of the yellow card totals of the most heinous perpetrators as they approach the precipice of a ban and mount the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

Those of you who’ve been following the #SuspensionTightrope hashtag on Twitter will be fully aware that this season’s apparatus has been ready and waiting for its first customer since last weekend, after a number of players earned their third caution of the campaign.

The midweek Capital One Cup matches ensured we were finally up and running, as Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey earned a fourth yellow card of the season during Tuesday evening’s 3-0 home win over Everton – leaving him just a single booking shy of a one-match ban. Having missed 45 minutes of football in Swansea’s excellent start to the campaign, Shelvey now needs to avoid another yellow from now until December 31 in order to escape a ban – highly unlikely, given his current rate of cards.

The biggest name amongst those on three yellows is undoubtedly Diego Costa, who is now owned by a massive 60% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. Rested for last night’s cup win over Bolton, Chelsea’s top scorer has received a yellow card in all three of his away league appearances so far as opposition backlines have successfully managed to wind him up on his travels.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle has also incurred the referee’s wrath on a trio of occasions, as have Arsenal pair Jack Wilshere and Calum Chambers – worryingly for Arsene Wenger, the latter has now been booked in all three of his league starts. City’s Yaya Toure is also on three bookings, though his failure to fire as a Fantasy option so far means only 9% of FPL managers have the Ivorian on board.

Elsewhere in the collective notebooks of the men in black, the red cards for Pablo Zabaleta and Wilfried Bony led to bans served in this round of Capital One Cup ties, which means both will be back to star for their respective sides at the weekend. No such luck for Tyler Blackett, though, as United’s loss to MK Dons in the previous round means his next match is the league encounter with West Ham, and the imminent return of Luke Shaw suggest his days in the United starting XI may already be done. Last night also saw Newcastle’s Mehdi Abeid see red in the 3-2 win at Palace – he’s now set to sit on the sidelines as the Magpies make their way to the Britannia.

Just do it if u think pelle will do well. If u are not even convinced pelle will outscore costa then u better stick w costa.

Personally I'd risk the double up. Well worth the potential rewards and Burnley are very goal shy. Even if they score one there's just as much chance the SUN v SWA game will have both teams score.

I don't think Wenger will start Chambers in all the EPL games Arsenal will play while Debuchy is out. Can't risk having only 2 CBs if any of Chambers, Kos or Mertesacker gets injured.

So do you think they'll start Bellerin? Or could they possibly play both Gibbs and Monreal at RB and LB? (Arsenal fan here)

      1. Doolittle
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

This is kind of the problem at his price; he is a phenomenal player and will no doubt score hatfuls when fit, but if Ulloa/Pelle/Welbeck get a goal, even an Aguero brace might not fully justify his price (if, say, a cheaper option is paired with ADM/Alexis/Fabregas). At the moment, I can't see Aguero doing well enough to justify hindering my tea, as other options look strong.

As a Costa and Clyne owner I wouldn't particularly mind the first two. I think more people would lose out than me if that happened, and I'm confident Clyne will get attacking returns too.

I'm benching Lovren this weekend probably but would be happy for 3 to come true, but don't have any United players so would prefer if the last one didn't happen 🙂

I don't see many discussions on here referencing statistics from the members pages, which I guess is down to people not wanting to share info with non-members. In any case it would be really nice to have some educated discussions using statistics on here... Is there a members-only forum, or can I submit member-articles with some analysis?

Sharing members stats specifically is frowned upon, but it is easy enough to allude to them if you want to make a certain argument by saying things like "great underlying stats" or "check the comparison tool between x and y" etc. We will get what you're saying in most cases.

There's isn't a members only forum and posting stats from the members area is a no no I'm afraid. There are ways around it though. Perhaps post a link to a members table and say "Ooo, the 3rd person on that list is a bit of a suprise" etc, etc. that's how it usually works.

That makes sense. Thanks for that.

I was hoping to make a detailed case for/against playing Ulloa instead of Siggy this weekend and it becomes a bit awkward to write about it without numbers though, or giving it away completely.

Slightly worried about Costa this weekend?! Mourinho only said last week that Costa is not fit enough to play twice a week yet and after already dropping home points to shalke in the champs league, an away game on Wednesday against sporting you'd think he'd start Costa in that game and be more likely to start a Remy or Drogba against Aston villa.. Any thoughts?

Haha, how many times had Mourinho said Costa was not fit and came in scored two goals and hattrick? PS: Remy has played in League Cup

Once from memory?! There's no doubt he's carrying a hamstring injury though.. Drogba is a fit starter however remy only played 70 mins so would be capable of starting too..

Some people also think playing in the Villa game would make more sense for him than playing midweek with the Arsenal game the following weekend in mind.

I don't see him playing Sporting-Arsenal, but Villa-Arsenal works for his one game per week strategy.

Yeh that's fair enough, Aston/Arsenal combo does the most likely scenario but you see where I'm coming from haha.. I doubt he'll start all 3

Rodgers: "Raheem is a super fit boy. Playing 120mins in midweek won't be a problem for him."

So why did u bench him when i made him captain against Villa? 🙁

Hahahaha. Probably his answer is :"Super fit doesn't mean i want to risk him."

So tired of seeing people complain about the Villa benching. Consider this:

      1. He had just been Hodgsoned for 10 days without proper recovery. (i.e. doing 50 yard sprints the day after playing his 2nd 90 minutes in 4 days, as was the case with Sturridge too).
      2. Liverpool can manage his recovery perfectly in the days between games. 3 days is more than enough.
      3. Markovic was suspended for the midweek CL game which meant Sterling HAD to start that one.
      4. With Allen, Sturridge, Can, Coutinho, and Henderson all injured or having knocks this week I don't think Rodgers had any choice but to play Sterling.

Keep Siggy and play either A) Puncheon, or B) Moses.

Both takes corners. Both playing at home against wide-open defensive opponents. (CP and Newcastle)

Puncheon play slightly deeper but Moses' team has lower scoring rate. Your thought?

Didn't start midweek so i'd be surprised if he doesn't start in the derby.

Ramsey, Fabregas, Siggy, Di Maria, Sterling
    Costa, Pelle, Naismith
