This afternoon sees the return of our Suspension Tightrope widget which is now available in your right sidebars under the Watchlist rankings. For those of you less familiar, the Tightrope keeps a tally of cards accrued from Capital One Cup, FA Cup and Premier League matches and the table is updated after each Gameweek – we’ll aim to share the Fantasy implications of the latest yellows and reds dished out by referees as we go.

We’ll bring you news of all the latest suspensions, along with a regular update of the yellow card totals of the most heinous perpetrators as they approach the precipice of a ban and mount the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

Those of you who’ve been following the #SuspensionTightrope hashtag on Twitter will be fully aware that this season’s apparatus has been ready and waiting for its first customer since last weekend, after a number of players earned their third caution of the campaign.

The midweek Capital One Cup matches ensured we were finally up and running, as Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey earned a fourth yellow card of the season during Tuesday evening’s 3-0 home win over Everton – leaving him just a single booking shy of a one-match ban. Having missed 45 minutes of football in Swansea’s excellent start to the campaign, Shelvey now needs to avoid another yellow from now until December 31 in order to escape a ban – highly unlikely, given his current rate of cards.

The biggest name amongst those on three yellows is undoubtedly Diego Costa, who is now owned by a massive 60% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. Rested for last night’s cup win over Bolton, Chelsea’s top scorer has received a yellow card in all three of his away league appearances so far as opposition backlines have successfully managed to wind him up on his travels.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle has also incurred the referee’s wrath on a trio of occasions, as have Arsenal pair Jack Wilshere and Calum Chambers – worryingly for Arsene Wenger, the latter has now been booked in all three of his league starts. City’s Yaya Toure is also on three bookings, though his failure to fire as a Fantasy option so far means only 9% of FPL managers have the Ivorian on board.

Elsewhere in the collective notebooks of the men in black, the red cards for Pablo Zabaleta and Wilfried Bony led to bans served in this round of Capital One Cup ties, which means both will be back to star for their respective sides at the weekend. No such luck for Tyler Blackett, though, as United’s loss to MK Dons in the previous round means his next match is the league encounter with West Ham, and the imminent return of Luke Shaw suggest his days in the United starting XI may already be done. Last night also saw Newcastle’s Mehdi Abeid see red in the 3-2 win at Palace – he’s now set to sit on the sidelines as the Magpies make their way to the Britannia.

Looking at how Villa played against Pool, they will pretty much deploy the same tactics. This means that they will be looking to destroy (literally) Costa, like they did Balotelli and try and get him angry. Either a red card or massive points haul for Costa then this weekend.

Couldn't leave out any from Costa, Fabregas, Hazard, Aguero, Ramsey, Sterling ahead of either of those two?

Any help with my defensive choice really appreciated, I need 3 from:

    Chambers, Clyne, Duff, Wisdom, Moreno

I'm currently on Clyne, Chambers, Wisdom with the other two on the bench (behind Zaha) as Duff then Moreno.

I'd fancy Duff over Chambers, personally. He doesn't have massive attacking threat and Arsenal look frail/have injuries at the back. But I can see the attraction of a defender from a 'big' team.

Thanks, I was thinking that, but that would give me two defenders playing each other which I never like, but could work!

Moreno I think is destined for last sub...although I horrible feeling he may score :s

If ever there's been a fixture where 0-0 looks likely, it's West Brom - Burnley. I know it seems weird doing it but it could work!

I took Moreno out on my WC. You feel like he'll score but Liverpool are too frustrating defensively!

A question to the regular (more or less) top 100-1k achievers. 4 of the last 5 seasons, my rank was 2 30kish finishes, top 7k and top 11k. That is very good but I want to improve further on that. I am targeting a top 1k finish or better. What is important to achieve such a high rank consistently? And is it possible to achieve it when you have had a very bad start or do you have to be on the up from the very beginning? I am currently 800k-ish which is just dreadful.

You can still finish top 5K from there. A few good GWs and you'll be 100K.

Top 5K was realistIc. If you get on a good streak, top 1K is more than possible. I was about 600K after GW5 last season and just failed top 1K.

I'm not one of those people as I've only recently started taking the game 'seriously'. But I hear a bad start isn't anything to panic about as long as you can pull it around pretty quickly! 🙂 Good luck and I hope you get useful advice. 🙂

Those finishes are very good. I think I came top 3k last season after being about 1m early on. If you're consistently finishing around the top 10 tp 50 k you're a good player. Any higher needs a lot of luck.

Most important of all at the moment - dont panic. At a guess that puts you around 45 points behind me and Im ranked 67k. 45 points is hardly anything and rank is largely meaningless at this point of the season.

Do it in stages. I think if you can get top 100k after GW10 you should be in a position to get top 10k. Anything outside if that and it'll be a struggle.

I remember I had a terribe start in 2011/12 but then RVP saved my season and I got 11k. For my 7k finish in 2009/2010, I was doing great from the beginning. That was Ancelotti's first year at Chelsea and I had Lamps and Drogba from the beginning. Hopefully, I'll start getting my (c) choices right thats the most important part I believe.

I am currently 523rd. Not the foggiest why.

I have finished over 160,000 and my lowest was 3525. At no point did I adopt any different strategy, just chose the team each week I though would score the most.

Luck and not trying to be to clever help, if a player is in form get him. Jump on bandwagons and keep your captain picks with the obvious.

This year - been a bit lucky myself . No hits , but held players for one more week has paid off.
Quick jumps onto "hot players" Siggy gw2 , held Mata for goal and straight to ADM. etc.

Getting good defensive returns is where it has been so terrible for me so far. CSs are very difficult to predict this year especially with City and Chelsea not solid at the back.

Definitely possible. focus on getting in the premium players as priority so as not to fall further behind, then trim your defence to a solid back five of cheap rotaters. if it means a couple of 4 point hits or a wildcard then do it.

I have the below team and 1 FT and 0.2. I can think of a number of moves, but I wondering if I should just hold and wait until next week when I would have 2 FTs and know more about my guys and who I could bring in. I could use a defender and if I dropped Rooney to Ulloa for example, I could save enough to bring in Baines and still upgrade a mid next week. Any thoughts on that or other things I should be doing? I would appreciate any thoughts or insights.

    Begovic (Krul)
N Taylor, Caulker, Clyne, Chester, Chambers

Have asked this before , but never got any positive feedback.

WC ? even when team doing well . Most say only WC when team is in a mess and if not hold for DGWs.

My thinking at the mo is that GW 8 is a perfect time to WC. Value besides - fixtures really turn for a number of sides from gw 8 .
A number of questions should be answered by gw 8 , also
Thinking I can probably get a 20-30 pt advantage ( poss more, hope ) over this period ?

Confident I will win my ML whatever - but would really like to achieve a real good OR ( top 1000)

Anybody think I should go with my gut and do the WC GW8 ?

Oh yeah and there's also the enjoyment factor - Tinkering over the break.

not sure there's ever a right/wrong time to play it. Just try and maximise it. I've used it before just for fixtures. Wouldnt save it for the sake of it, nor use it too rashly.

If you feel that a lot of transfers in one week sets you up for several months, then why not.

I'm in the same position. Currently undecided whether I'm going to use it over the GW8 or hold it for the monster DGW at the end of the season.

        • 13 Years
        11 years, 10 months ago

Yeah - Thinking is that I can get a substantial advantage - then taking hits over DGW not so much an issue ?
A lot of players that I would prefer from GW 8 is making it most temptimg.

I wouldn't do it with Rooney playing Westham at home. I think he has a good record against them too. Plus I am expecting a Utd reaction after last week's humiliation and City have a big CL game which will affect the game time of Aguero and Silva.

Still tempted to bench Siggy as he is away in midfield. Just have a feeling that Schneiderlin may do well. So little to choose. It would work out best if a top player was rested this week so a strong bench would be a big bonus.

    My Gw8 team:

    Krul/Elliott

    Baines Bertrand Chambers Hutton Wisdom

    Hazard Ramsey Sterling Siggy Albrighton

    Sturridge Costa Welbeck

    1. Lucy.
      • 13 Years

Excellent. One possible problem I have is Krul being around but that's not a priority. Nice balance. The only thing that would concern me would be if City started firing. I know they've started badly but they're undoubtedly a great team. One to monitor I think.

      1. Sweetpea
        • 14 Years

Krul not worth a transfer as Pardew could be gone soon.

Aguero could replace sturridge but probably have to compromise on Baines in that case.

    Hi All,

    Here's my current team.

    Krul Mannone

Ivanovic Duff Wisdom N Taylor Chester

    Siggy Sterling Ramsey Silva (Boyd)

    Costa Rooney Welbeck

    Should I do A. silva > ADM or B. Ramsey > ADM.

Am leaning towards A. due to Ramsey's higher ownership. Noted gunners' tricky fixtures but silva seems to be  somewhat unlucky with fpl returns this season, what with the assist to the assist for lampard's winner last Sunday for example. For city attacking coverage, I plan to bring in agureo for gw 8. At the expense of ivanovic (polly ivan > chambers or Bertrand and Rooney > Agureo for gw 8).

    Am I right in choosing
    A. silva > ADM?

    Thanks!
