Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders is rolled out once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

Captain Poll

Yet again, Diego Costa is the favourite heading into the weekend’s matches. A home clash with Arsenal refuses to deter his backers – the Spain international has scored in all three of his appearances at the Bridge and faces a Gunners defence with a single shut-out to their name all season.

Sergio Aguero runs him close, though. City’s star striker has earned a significant number of new owners this week due to the fall-out from Wayne Rooney’s three-match suspension and has received 21% of the votes cast to Costa’s 24%. Aguero’s strike at Hull was his fourth of the season and he now pays visit to a Villa side reeling from back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea. Edin Dzeko is backed by just 3% by comparison, despite outscoring Aguero by 13 points to eight in the KC win.

Leicester’s Leonardo Ulloa is also highly fancied. Like Costa, he’s netted in all three matches in front of his own fans – having grabbed goals against Everton, Arsenal and Man United at the King Power Stadium, he welcomes a Burnley side that shipped four against the Baggies last Sunday.

Three goals in five starts ensures Raheem Sterling remains on the radar as Liverpool attempt to rediscover the form that served up 100 goals last season. The teenager entertains West Brom this time round, but with the visitors chalking up consecutive shut-outs, just 11% are looking to hand him the armband. United’s home clash with Everton also sees Angel Di Maria (5%) and Radamel Falcao (4%) feature prominently, though just 1% have placed their faith in Robin van Persie, despite the Dutchman scoring in each of the last two Gameweeks.

Sakho, would be very ballsy but he is in form and playing QPR at home so worthy of consideration IMO. Also considering Costa and sterling.

I think owning him is differential enough, brought him in this week myself. If Costa explodes its gonna hurt a lot.

Yes would be risky. But those who captain a high scorer when Costa blanks (which he inevitably will do) will get a huge jump in OR. Just a matter of picking the right player in the right week...

Seen you're going for a bego/fab GK pairing on your WC. Looking at options myself for when I WC next week. They seem to rotate well, but is expensive. Care to explain the pick? Any other pairings you were considering?

        Sure

-They rotate very well till the end of the season. Two good defences and barring one game week (game week 10 to be precise), they offer perfect rotation.
-Scezesny-Mannone is another I like, it works till the Jan WC, but it could be a disaster if Ospina becomes Arsenal's #1
-The best for me is Forster/Fabianski, which rotates even better till the Jan WC. However, I have 3 Saints already and the next best alternative I was left with was Fab/Bego.

Kuqi, if you don't want to spend 10.0 on keepers I would suggest having Taylor in your defense instead, as that way you still get a Swansea defender but for 0.5 cheaper, and having Begovic-4.5 as your choice.

The way TFF has done it makes sense, but if he didn't have Ivanovic I would suggest Taylor and downgrade Fabianski.

Arsenal don't know how to play tight though. Arsene showed his naivety against Dortmund and Chelsea will take full advantage by playing Hazard and Willian/Schurrle in the channels behind the Arsenal fullbacks. Hazard was really effective against a similar style against Sporting.

He would have had 2-3 assists in midweek if Schurrle and Costa hadn't missed sitters. I thought he did reasonably well, especially in the first half when he exposed Sportings left back time and time again.

      I think you've offered enough already! 😀

I don't like planing that many transfers ahead. The next game week is the only one I'd look to plan. The problem here, being that with so many uncertainties, players finding form, injuries and suspensions our viewpoint changes every week.

Hence, coming to game week 8, yes that looks a great bet. However, I wouldn't want to remove Lovren before QPR. You'd be better off either saving or making the Krul to Fabianski move

      Hope this helps 😀

        Thanks. Good points.

I've considered keeping Lovren as well, but his price keeps dropping and I want Baines, in which case my rotation works best if I trade him rather than anyone else. I will be considering alternatives closely this weekend though.

I actually hadn't thought of Krul>Fabianski but that would be a pretty smart move, though I'm not sure I want to double up on Swansea defenders. Maybe I'll consider that more if I use Taylor as bait for Baines instead though 🙂

Baines is very tempting, yes! (he just got an assist btw, despite everton having conceded!)

But that Fabianski transfer would go a long way in sorting your keeper head ache. And you can afford it as well! 🙂

Or maybe you can get Baines next week and Fabianski gw 9 because you aren't going to play him in gw 8 anyways? Nothing wrong in doubling up, on the favorable fixtures.

Good point. I don't see Krul as a massive issue tbh, as he'll only play these 4 fixtures for me prior to January, and those games coincide with Begovic's worst ones.

            wba, whm, bur, SUN

I will certainly consider Fabianski in GW9 though in the absence of injuries, and if Ulloa performs well in GW7-8 to earn the right to stay in my team.

Krul, Lovren, Tadic and Downing look the weak points of your team.

Replace with a gk who rots with Bego; Lovren->CHS def; Downing->ADM; Tadic ->Boyd.

EVR lack of cs puts me off Baines despite the improving fixtures.

Disagree with the Downing part, well worth a punt at that price (I prefer Puncheon, however)

Doesn't have to rely on cs' alone, has set pieces to fall back on. More so now that Mirallas is injured

Needs to gain attacking points every week to justify his inclusion imo. First rule when selecting defenders is cs. No cs potential - forget it.

They'll be sorted soon. Everton are too good a team to miss out on defensive returns. The better fixtures will help

It did, 15 clean sheets last season. Only Chelsea,Arsenal,City had more.

Baines is a midfielder though effectively. He's been picking up attacking points for the last 2-3 weeks consistently too:

Palace pen, Wolfsburg pen and 2 assists, tonight another assist, wba assist, chelsea assist...

As I said, CS first; attacking output second. Been here several times with Baines before.

So you wouldn't be happy if your 7.0 midfielder had gotten 1 goal 2 assists so far... which is effectively 2 goals + 2 assists if you count 1 CS. Not bad.

Why do you prefer Puncheon if I may enquire? He has Chelsea, Liverpool, and United in his next 6, as well as away at the solid WBA.

Hull A and Sunderland H are his only two good fixtures, and I think Downing has better...

I am talking long term here. Decent goal threat, great stats and has been playing ahead of the striker. The way I look at it is that Puncheon is the bigger goal threat, while Downing has more assist potential. Maybe Downing is the better punt as of now

Neither of them come up in those stats though...

You might be right about Puncheon though long-term. I chose Downing only for the next two games though, and then I'll bench him and probably look to sell at some point.

Tadic isn't a weak point. Neither is Downing due to his price and fixtures.

I'm keeping a close eye on Lovren this weekend. He keeps getting his head on corners every single game (3 times yesterday) so its only a matter of time before he scores too.

Not a fan of ADM, he's not worth 10.0, especially not with his fixtures.

Baines has shown he can get into double figures even when Everton concede 3, so I'm sold. I look at him like a 7.0 midfielder, who has the bonus of 10-15 CS's.

Tadic and Downing are purely hunches you are gambling on. Wait till they consistently produce returns before buying.

i agree. i would personally pick chadli over tadic.
downing is a bandwagon that will definately fail in d end imo. tadic and downing are just like townsend and barkley of last season.

Tadic has only 1 blank in 6 games. Thats pretty consistent and acceptable. Unlucky not to have more. If you saw the stats I've seen then you'd realise that neither are "hunches" or "gambles", but rather very informed statistically-backed decisions.
