Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders is rolled out once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

Captain Poll

Yet again, Diego Costa is the favourite heading into the weekend’s matches. A home clash with Arsenal refuses to deter his backers – the Spain international has scored in all three of his appearances at the Bridge and faces a Gunners defence with a single shut-out to their name all season.

Sergio Aguero runs him close, though. City’s star striker has earned a significant number of new owners this week due to the fall-out from Wayne Rooney’s three-match suspension and has received 21% of the votes cast to Costa’s 24%. Aguero’s strike at Hull was his fourth of the season and he now pays visit to a Villa side reeling from back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea. Edin Dzeko is backed by just 3% by comparison, despite outscoring Aguero by 13 points to eight in the KC win.

Leicester’s Leonardo Ulloa is also highly fancied. Like Costa, he’s netted in all three matches in front of his own fans – having grabbed goals against Everton, Arsenal and Man United at the King Power Stadium, he welcomes a Burnley side that shipped four against the Baggies last Sunday.

Three goals in five starts ensures Raheem Sterling remains on the radar as Liverpool attempt to rediscover the form that served up 100 goals last season. The teenager entertains West Brom this time round, but with the visitors chalking up consecutive shut-outs, just 11% are looking to hand him the armband. United’s home clash with Everton also sees Angel Di Maria (5%) and Radamel Falcao (4%) feature prominently, though just 1% have placed their faith in Robin van Persie, despite the Dutchman scoring in each of the last two Gameweeks.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Just worked something out

Even though my team value is 102.5 with 0.2 in the bank...

My current squad would have cost just 99.0 at the start, meaning that I have effectively LOST 1.0 of team value!

So you are at 99.8 at starting prices, so 99.5 basically.

the 0.2 difference is 0.1 losses on Rooney and Caulker I think. Most of my added TV is sunk into players like Sterling, Siggy, Fabregas, Costa and Clyne, who I'm not trading.

The only "real" value earned I will see will be when I sell one of those above.

I also "lost" by getting Pelle at 7.6, Ulloa at 5.6, and Downing at 5.6 as well. Though I profited 0.3 from Naismith to make up for that. All about the pennies!

Interesting... Mine would have cost 99.0 at the start as well, though TV is now 102.8 with 0.4 in the bank.

Strange isn't it. So regardless of your TV, you could have got a better team in GW1 than you can now.

I'm not really sure how that happened...

I suppose it's because I spent 0.2 more on Di Maria than his initial price (though he wasn't available at the start), 0.1 more on Aguero and Welbeck, and lost 0.1 on both Rooney and Ferdinand's starting prices before I sold them.

    3. Kerz
      • 11 Years
      11 years, 4 months ago

Hmm, mine would have cost £100.1m at the start. So have I effectively "made" 0.1m? My current selling value is £101.1m, so have I made 1.1 or 0.1?

My current team value is £103m...

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 4 months ago

Its all relative. I traded Rooney>Pelle and have since earned 0.1 on him, but I lost 0.1 on Rooney's original price, and also bought Pelle at 7.6 and not 7.5, meaning that effectively I lost 0.1 in total. Once I start selling the high price-risers though it will even itself out. Unless I buy someone like Welbeck who has already risen loads.

Since I'm a long way back, I thought I may as well not get Aguero or Pelle. This week I'll take a hit to do:

    Ramsey -> Jedinak
    Rooney -> RVP (c)

That leaves me 7.3m to get Welbeck in next GW for Hull.

He has been playing very well but his returns haven't reflected this, unfortunately.

A lot of folks are hoping for a points explosion from him. On the other hand he might lose form and go through a series of 2 pointers. Personally I would wait until he gets a double-digit score, or thereabouts, and then buy him.

If Mesut was guaranteed a central role, and with Arsenal's fixtures, I would go with him. Unfortunately, Wenger keeps sticking him on the wing.

Mata will have the number 10 role for the next 3 gameweeks, but United's fixtures are not the best. Silva it is I reckon.

wouldn't want your benching dilemma every week. I'd downgrade one of your mids to a base price midfielder and use the money to upgrade one of your other mids or strikers,

Also, if Welbeck or Pelle lose form you don't have many options to transfer out at their prices. I'd want a Dzeko or Aguero next to Costa.

Can't agree that Dzeko a better choice than Welbeck. Good team by the way

I may go Aguero (c) this week.

    He who dares Rodders 😉

I think this may be what sways me towards Costa, this week. Both very consistent goalscorers, but Costa at home more explosive than Aguero away.

that's what i'm thinking too Evs. Costa is going to troll us for gametime one of these weeks...

What are your thoughts on Welbz? Essential from next week or stick with Pelle and try and pick an ARS MF?

Clyne (Tot A), Janmaat (Swa A), PvA (STK H) or Siggy (NEW H). I got to bench one, the RMT tells me to bench Clyne but I am currently on benching Janmaat... Who should I bench?

Oviedo should be back on your radars Chaps. Could well feature LMF at OT.

At 4.4 that's some proper value!
