Technical Area

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

Certainly not essential - no player is. If you have Baines, that's great, but it may mean having to sacrifice ADM/Aguero/Sterling etc etc. You could have a budget defence or, for a similar price, Ivanovic.

That said, he's an excellent option.

7.0 midfielder with 1 goal and 3 assists in 7 games, who is on penalty, free-kick, and corner-taking duty, along with having the majority of attacks going through his side of the pitch. His high involvement often means he's among the BPS regardless of goals/assists, and then there's also the fact that he gets CS points because he's listed as a defender. Who wouldn't want a bit of that?

That said, I was planning on taking a hit on Lovren>Baines to catch the price rise, but due to Lovren having QPR next and Baines' price remaining fairly static so far I have decided to wait and reassess in GW9 instead.

        Brilliantly put, Dinho.

I also have him and it feels great. I'd add to your argument the following: with teams struggling to keep clean-sheets, it's better having someone who also offers you fantastic offensive potential (and is on free-kicks and penalty-kicks), than any other premium defender who relies solely on something not even teams like Chelsea are collecting this season.

On top of that, Everton's fixtures are hard to ignore. I expect Martinez to sort out his defensive issues and bring back their fortress sooner rather than later.

All good points but you can't actually compare him to a 7m midfielder because the opportunity cost of owning him versus a 4m defender is greater than the opportunity cost of owning a 7.5m midfielder over a 4.5m midfielder.

He's outscoring 7.5-8.0m midfielders though, like Tadic and Eriksen for example. In other words you would have scored more points playing a 433 than 343 with Baines in defense instead of Tadic or Eriksen in midfield.

Great article. As a Downing owner I can echo what was said: I'm not worried at all by him playing slightly deeper, as that appears to be due to Noble and Kouyate's short-term injuries, and I expect him to return to his central position once they are back. His performances and stats "in the hole" are better than Zarate's after all. He is still the league leader in corners taken which is a big plus considering how big an aerial threat West Ham pose. He'll be my 5th mid for quite a while I would expect.

I've got him as my 4th mid and am a little concerned. I liked the points last week but I watched the whole match and did look to be playing very deep. His range of passing was excellent though, I thought. Hope the other mids return to fitness soon so he's played further up again. Don't want to rely just on corners.

One touch in the box sounds low, but keep in mind that that one touch was the pass to Nolan that he should have scored on 9/10. Although he was a bit deeper he still chose a fair few good passes and was still one of their main threats. As 4th mid you should be able to go big elsewhere too with the likes of Aguero for example.

Yup that was exactly why I got him as an aguero enabler last week. I'll keep at least until after burnley anyway.

Also got him as 4th mid to enable Aguero. I'll be keeping him for Burnley though - unless I choose to wildcard this GW, in which case he probably makes way for Chadli.

Has anyone ever drafted 2 top goalkeepers in a PL Draft League in order to block someone else in the league from having a starting keeper, and in order to set up a decent one-sided trade (bordering on blackmail :P) later on?... Curious to know if that is a reasonable strategy.

    1. The Hound
      • 14 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

I've never done a draft football team but I play fantasy nfl which is draft and know u have to pick your kickers last as the end up on roughly the same points anyway. I'm guessing it's the same with gks because they end up with similar points so don't waste a pick getting in gks and get big hitters first IMO.

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

The point though is that a team without a starting keeper will miss out on at least 60 points over the season, and would be more willing to make a trade to get the missing keeper. Imo there's way more defenders to choose from so its a relatively good way to handcuff someone into making a trade with you that benefits you, given that the pool of starting GK's is quite small.

Also, the difference between the top keepers and the lesser ones was 120 points to around 60, whereas the difference between a decent defender for a mid-table team and a lesser defender in the same team is maybe 20 points, so its hardly a drop-off and that is less of a priority.

I'm thinking along these lines as I might need to break some legs in order to acquire a decent forward later on as they're all gone already 🙂

          • 14 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

So there must be a lot of people in this league then. I'd just select one decent gk then. But it's gotta be same as any fantasy that u first think about your heavy hitter, if all decent attackers gone get a great midfielder first.

I always pick the best player available no matter how many players i have in that position. My first two picks were Ramsey and Gerrard, and I appear to have succeeded in trading for Balotelli with a collection of picks between the 4th and 8th round 🙂

No one specific. Wilshere could move into the hole with caz and Sanchez on the wings. Ox caz sanchez. Sanchez roscisky caz another option. Walcott caz sanchez

When Sturridge is fit, bring him and chadli in for pelle and sterling (sotons fixtures get bad in a few weeks)

    Decent moves?

Buying Kolarov this week would be nuts right?

It seems like it's Clichy's turn

Aguero playing saturday and tuesday for argentina i China, then early k.o on saturday vs tootenham, and then CL game in russia on tuesday.. are we sure about his gametime vs Tottenham? City really need to win in CL.. maybe a sub apperance?? what do you think guys..

I think that Aguero is always going to be too much of a worry for 12.2M.

If his hammy hasn't gone before then, I think so. Tough schedule for him, with all the travelling.

I expect he'll be given the first 60 mins vs Spurs, at least.

Manchester>Beijing>Hong Kong>Manchester>Moscow in the space of 10-12 days. Should be fun for Aguero owners

Agree... probably get 60-70 mins.. not worth taking hits to get him in then maybe.. pelle-welbeck-Costa currently front 3..
