Our final look back at Gameweek 9 acknowledges the flourishing form of Arsenal’s South America, United’s improved display against Chelsea and the redistribution of funds within our 15-man squads, as many start to spend big in midfield and defence.

The Player

He arrived amidst much fanfare and Fantasy expectation but it’s fair to say Alexis Sanchez wasn’t quick to ignite at Arsenal. After six Gameweeks of the season, the Chilean had scored twice in the league and played from start to finish on just three occasions as Arsene Wenger afforded his summer signing time to settle in the frantic Premier League.

Fast forward to last weekend, where Sanchez – handed a central role behind Danny Welbeck – bagged a brace against Sunderland to take his tally to three goals, an assist and six bonus points in the last two matches, racking up hauls of 13 and 16 points.

Now just one point off the summit of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, the Chilean is set for an almighty bandwagon as the Gunners prepare to face Burnley this weekend. With premium options such as Cesc Fabregas and Raheem Sterling sitting in over 50% of teams and Angel di Maria in 39%, the 10.4-priced Sanchez couldn’t have picked a better time to come to form, allowing us to freshen up our midfields and take advantage of his flourishing displays as the Gunners also prepare to face Swansea and West Brom in the next four.

The Team

The last-gasp draw against Chelsea salvaged a vital point and, crucially, boosted morale ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby as United roll up to the Etihad looking for their first away win of the season.

Prior to the weekend visit to Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho’s side had afforded their opponents the least number of shots inside the box over the first eight rounds of fixtures but were forced to rely on Thibaut Courtois time and again in the 1-1 stalemate. Despite scoring just once, the home side fired 13 attempts from close-range; joint top for the Gameweek and a sign of their intentions and growing confidence against the tightest defence around.

Van Gaal now has Wayne Rooney back from suspension – albeit nursing a foot knock – and with Radamel Falcao also expected to return, the attacking options available suggest room for optimism.

Angel di Maria suffered a loss of ownership for the first time this season prior to the Chelsea clash but United’s display certainly indicates they are starting to find a better balance and the Argentine, as we mentioned in Sunday’s Big Numbers article, has created chances quicker than any regular in the league this season. Elsewhere in midfield, it remains to be seen whether the United manager will retain the current 4-2-3-1 formation but suddenly the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj could be on the radar as viable mid-price options if they can hold onto their starting berths.

As West Ham showed last weekend, the City defence is anything but watertight right now. The champions have managed one clean sheet in the last eight – against Aston Villa – and Van Gaal’s men will roll up to the Etihad in buoyant mood after depriving the league leaders of all three points. After that one, three superb home fixtures in the subsequent four (CPL, HUL, STO) suggest United’s bid for a top four finish looks very much on course, with Fantasy interest bound to increase on the back of such a schedule.

The Talking Point

The never-ending doubts surrounding Diego Costa’s fitness, allied with the steady form of a number of low-priced front men, has seen a shift in funds to midfield and defence over the last few days as many Fantasy managers begin to restructure their squads.

With the sub-6.0 pair Saido Berahino and Diafra Sakho continuing to make a mockery of their price tags and Graziano Pelle’s assist against Stoke taking him to the FPL summit, the trio have earned significant numbers of new investors this week. Costa and Radamel Falcao have been the premium price fall guys after missing the Old Trafford clash through injury, leaving Sergio Aguero as the only costly option in the top five transferred in strikers this week.

The cash generated from such sales has seen Sanchez soar to the top of many a Watchlist this week. As the Costa transfers out continue, both Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been snapped up by many as the league leaders prepare for a fine run of fixtures, whilst at the back, the spare budget has also allowed over 30,000 to bring in Leighton Baines, with the Toffees left-back now delivering attacking returns in six of his last seven.

There’s no doubt, though, that if Costa is fit for this weekend’s clash with QPR, he could run riot. With West Brom and Sunderland also in the next four, parting company remains a risky tactic – all the more so after Mourinho admitted he hopes to have his star striker back for Saturday. For many, though, enough is enough and shedding their sides of Costa finally relieves them of Mourinho’s mind games and the constant weekly drama that continues to hang heavy over our Fantasy campaigns.

Yeah I would hate it, though it would be equally awful if he didn't do anything.

I think it all depends on Costa, the more positive news that comes out the less inclined I am to ridding of Sterling.

You don't want to be full of regret watching the game. Try and forget about fantasy while you're there, but selling him won't help your experience.
The last thing you want is to be dreading seeing him on the ball, because he will make a lot of threatening runs etc even if he doesnt return FPL points.

So many ppl touting the move on here that it has become acceptable (myself included).

However, Liverpool's mid term fixtures are significantly better. And one would think Sturridge will be back for most of those games which will help. Not an easy decision, but if you go for it, there is the consolation you can buy Raheem back if it goes tits up.

Any reason why so many people are getting in Chambers now? I know he's very cheap, but Arsenal are without Koscielny for a while and their fixtures aren't great.

Looking at their next 6 games, home games in upper case, aways in lower, and what I'd expect them to get clean sheet wise.

    GW10 - BURNELY = yes
    GW11 - swansea = no
    GW12 - MAN UTD = no
    GW13 - west brom = no
    GW14 - SOUTHAMPTON = no
    GW15 - stoke = no

It doesn't look like a fruitful run of games, especially with their first choice centre back and right back out. Chambers is a 4.6m Arsenal defender so that is obviously the draw, but I don't think it's sensible. People are banking on a clean sheet at home to Burnley, which they should really get, but what if Arsenal concede and lose a banker of a clean sheet. That would really undermine the case for Chambers.

Never had a goal or assist in the FPL though, could be unlucky, but I don't currently see any substantial long term clean sheet or attacking appeal.

Yeah, thats what has put me off him. Kind fixtures in attacking terms, you would expect Arsenal to score in all of those games, but clean sheets could be harder to come by. Especially with Monreal at CB

People are blinded by his price and the concept of our defense as somehow miraculously going to suddenly be strong. We're pieced together as it is and now Gibbs out.

Agree - hanging on to Bertrand and Clyne next 3

However Chambers may have to come in when Saints turn Sour - to facilitate return of Costa or something else

They may all be less than 50% chance of a clean sheet, but I'd expect at least 1-2 of those "NO" picks to turn out to be yes.

Remember, when arsenal go to west brom or stoke, or even at home to southampton, they are playing a team whose priority is not to lose - who would be happy with a draw. This isn't true for anyone else below 5.0 as they're all at small teams.

Is it worth bring Sanchez or Hazard in for a hit (probably dropping ADM)?

Short term - yes. both are likely to get big scores this weekend

    Long term - no. why?
Hazard - if you have Fab already you will be stuck with 2 Chelsea mids. Mourinho teams dont tend to score many goals, he likes his 1-0's and Costa looks like he will score most of them.

Sanchez - Arsenal arent looking that good. risk of rotation with Walcott/Ramsey/Wilshere coming back and fixture congestion

ADM - nice run after this weekend

    Sanchez v Hazard

I think this depends on 1. whether you have Fab already, 2. if costs plays.
Hazard isnt as effective when Costa plays. It's more about Fabs through balls. If costa doesnt play then Hazard will have that free role and is more effective. then he is a must have.

Providing Sanchez plays he can be as effective if not more.

Theory: stick if you are thinking long term and possibly in h2h leagues. If you are dead cert on bringing one in then i would go Sanchez due to Costa likely to play and also most people have Fab already. But be prepared to switch straight back to ADM next week.

    Just my thoughts

I once owned Royston Drenthe for about 6 weeks and a total of about -1 points.

Awful awful pick. Though at least he never had a big haul, he was just terrible

I've had Chester since the start, played him GW1 for 15 points and don't think I've played him more than once since, missed the red card.

I think Costa will be fit tbh and is the stand-out captain for the week. If not, easy downgrade and then you can get Hazard/Sanchez for someone other than ADM. Just my opinion though, had the idea of getting rid of ADM before the WBA game and in hindsight it would've paid off but now I think we may as well keep.

    Those with Costa AND Aguero:

Are you planning to get rid of Costa, and if so, are you going to make room to get him back in next GW or just upgrade midfield / defence with the funds and get him back after internationals?

I just watched the goals by Sanchez again all I have to say is wow...may as well have just placed it on a silver plate for him.

This is why people are buying him?

Blunders every game when you have good fixtures

He will be there to pounce .
Incredible workrate , creates his own luck.

This is why people are buying him.

A lot of Tadic's big haul were also the result of blunders .
