Our final look back at Gameweek 9 acknowledges the flourishing form of Arsenal’s South America, United’s improved display against Chelsea and the redistribution of funds within our 15-man squads, as many start to spend big in midfield and defence.

The Player

He arrived amidst much fanfare and Fantasy expectation but it’s fair to say Alexis Sanchez wasn’t quick to ignite at Arsenal. After six Gameweeks of the season, the Chilean had scored twice in the league and played from start to finish on just three occasions as Arsene Wenger afforded his summer signing time to settle in the frantic Premier League.

Fast forward to last weekend, where Sanchez – handed a central role behind Danny Welbeck – bagged a brace against Sunderland to take his tally to three goals, an assist and six bonus points in the last two matches, racking up hauls of 13 and 16 points.

Now just one point off the summit of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, the Chilean is set for an almighty bandwagon as the Gunners prepare to face Burnley this weekend. With premium options such as Cesc Fabregas and Raheem Sterling sitting in over 50% of teams and Angel di Maria in 39%, the 10.4-priced Sanchez couldn’t have picked a better time to come to form, allowing us to freshen up our midfields and take advantage of his flourishing displays as the Gunners also prepare to face Swansea and West Brom in the next four.

The Team

The last-gasp draw against Chelsea salvaged a vital point and, crucially, boosted morale ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby as United roll up to the Etihad looking for their first away win of the season.

Prior to the weekend visit to Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho’s side had afforded their opponents the least number of shots inside the box over the first eight rounds of fixtures but were forced to rely on Thibaut Courtois time and again in the 1-1 stalemate. Despite scoring just once, the home side fired 13 attempts from close-range; joint top for the Gameweek and a sign of their intentions and growing confidence against the tightest defence around.

Van Gaal now has Wayne Rooney back from suspension – albeit nursing a foot knock – and with Radamel Falcao also expected to return, the attacking options available suggest room for optimism.

Angel di Maria suffered a loss of ownership for the first time this season prior to the Chelsea clash but United’s display certainly indicates they are starting to find a better balance and the Argentine, as we mentioned in Sunday’s Big Numbers article, has created chances quicker than any regular in the league this season. Elsewhere in midfield, it remains to be seen whether the United manager will retain the current 4-2-3-1 formation but suddenly the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj could be on the radar as viable mid-price options if they can hold onto their starting berths.

As West Ham showed last weekend, the City defence is anything but watertight right now. The champions have managed one clean sheet in the last eight – against Aston Villa – and Van Gaal’s men will roll up to the Etihad in buoyant mood after depriving the league leaders of all three points. After that one, three superb home fixtures in the subsequent four (CPL, HUL, STO) suggest United’s bid for a top four finish looks very much on course, with Fantasy interest bound to increase on the back of such a schedule.

The Talking Point

The never-ending doubts surrounding Diego Costa’s fitness, allied with the steady form of a number of low-priced front men, has seen a shift in funds to midfield and defence over the last few days as many Fantasy managers begin to restructure their squads.

With the sub-6.0 pair Saido Berahino and Diafra Sakho continuing to make a mockery of their price tags and Graziano Pelle’s assist against Stoke taking him to the FPL summit, the trio have earned significant numbers of new investors this week. Costa and Radamel Falcao have been the premium price fall guys after missing the Old Trafford clash through injury, leaving Sergio Aguero as the only costly option in the top five transferred in strikers this week.

The cash generated from such sales has seen Sanchez soar to the top of many a Watchlist this week. As the Costa transfers out continue, both Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been snapped up by many as the league leaders prepare for a fine run of fixtures, whilst at the back, the spare budget has also allowed over 30,000 to bring in Leighton Baines, with the Toffees left-back now delivering attacking returns in six of his last seven.

There’s no doubt, though, that if Costa is fit for this weekend’s clash with QPR, he could run riot. With West Brom and Sunderland also in the next four, parting company remains a risky tactic – all the more so after Mourinho admitted he hopes to have his star striker back for Saturday. For many, though, enough is enough and shedding their sides of Costa finally relieves them of Mourinho’s mind games and the constant weekly drama that continues to hang heavy over our Fantasy campaigns.

Anyone else think Mane could be as good as, if not better shout than, Tadic, over the next few?

Would allow me to bring in Baines for the first time ever as well 🙂

Sanchez only firing Arsenal mid and you cant afford him for Sterling.

Krul - I dumped him way back , but perhaps , just perhaps Newcastle will be a little more settled now after 2 wins and playing pretty well away to Spurs.

If you still worried about Krul then maybe to Foster ? , you dont have Wisdom

Obviously everyone is scrambling to get Sanchez and to a lesser extent Hazard, but what about the two midfield favourites from the start of the season Ramsey and Eriksen? They're going unmentioned and I wonder whether they, along with Sterling, will probe much better value until the January WC? You can add Wally to this list in 2-3 weeks too.

In Ramsey's case he is over a million cheaper and in Eriksen's case 2m cheaper and that money could make a huge difference and allow you to squeeze in a premium option elsewhere.

Ramsey is not THE SAME Ramsey without proper target man upfront Arsenal's attack. Welbeck is a different type of player which reflects on Rambo's form. Due to some other jobs on the pitch or different instructions, who knows, but that is what I meant by saying Ramsey is worthless without Giroud leading the way, making space etc.

May well be the case. Last year he had a lot more responsibility to get ahead of Giroud and into the box. Maybe he's not being asked to do that as much now with Welbeck up front.

I know, it's insane. Even going into a fixture against City away, people were hot on him, and many were aiming to get him ahead of the Newcastle game.

One blank later and I've seen almost nobody talking about him

Ramsey has been rather poor ( by last seasons standards) .

Not sure why and do expect him to get back up there , but would not rush him in just yet.

True. I'm not planning to bring him in, just saying he's another potential addition to that list once up to match sharpness

imho it shows time n time again that spurs is missing when u expect them to do well..i still want eriksen, more of to replace siggy/tadic..and i m aware of his goals...but he is no haz/sanchez and i still rate him 2nd tier option..not even finding it worth to do sterling->eriksen.

Fair enough, maybe you're right. You would rather pay a million more for Sterling/Rambo/Wally or save a million and get Chadli/Siggy

I can get Alcaraz easily, but would have to do some serious jiggery-pokery to get Baines in.

Is it a matter of Baines (maybe Coleman) or nothing? Would Alcaraz be a good substitute or is it pointless to get an Everton defender that isn't Baines or Coleman?

I wouldn't say it is worthless as you are getting in a defender from a team who has more of chance of keeping a clean sheet than the other defenders of the same price category. I would say he's will keep more CS in his time playing than Wisdom, Duff, Hutton etc. but you are eventually gonna have to get rid of him. IMO I would prioritise getting Baines/Coleman

Do some people not have internet on this. Some Q's on here all you have to do is google it. Is Costa fit? When is this player back from injury?? etc etc

It's nice to gather info from all over hence why if you ask here multiple people can answer with different sources and their opinion as well.

But I also agree some questions it is just a simple google

    RMT

    Begovic (Gilks)

    Baines, Chambers, Alderweireld (Wisdom, Duff)

Di Maria, Fabregas, Eriksen, Tadic, Sigurdsson

    Aguero, Pellé, (Ulloa)

Is Eriksen and Tadic --> Boyd and Sánchez (-4) a good move? Or should i wait until next week?

why does people feel sanchez is not a long term option? he actually only plays 30min more than ADM and he scores 4 more points than ADM. he also plays a few tougher games in the opening periods. and the same as ADM he is also new to EPL and can get better.

while i understand ADM has no europe commitment i oso cannot see sanchez always getting benched..nor walcott being an immediate replacement for sanchez.

haha sorry i mean FPL wise that we will replace sanchez with walcott..though i might even do a double up of wally+sanchez

it will be mouth watering to see sanchez walcott ozil welbeck ramsey playing all in a team..though my arsenal mates say its impossible as somehow its not possible for all of them to be fit together lol

The point in holding Coleman is his attacking upside. Arsenal in recent years are a little tighter at the back. So Chambers gives you a bit more CS prospect at significant savings while Coleman gives you goals/assists on occasion. So it really gets down to whether you need the extra funds.

if u do not need the fund..keep coleman..as bad as everton def is, arsenal's one is not much better..plus coleman's attacking potential is definitely worth it over chambers..

Until the midweek games are over, making concrete plans is unwise. Southampton at Stoke could be a particularly bruising. Encounter, Pelle in danger of a booking taking him to four, or even worse an injury
Fabregas is already on four yellows, and there a suggestion he could pick up another to miss the QPR game.

Good point about cesc, if he is to miss a game due to suspension, surely QPR game is suitable
