Steven Naismith grabs a goal and assist as Everton ease past travel-sick QPR. Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas also notch for the Merseysiders before the latter is forced off through injury, whilst Bobby Zamora stabs home a consolation effort to deny the Toffees a clean sheet once again.

Barkley Opens his Account

Handed a spot in the double-pivot due to Gareth Barry’s suspension, Ross Barkley still managed to notch his first goal of the season with an excellent long-range strike for the Toffees. With Barry back for the weekend trip to Southampton, Barkley owners will be hoping for a move back to a more advanced role once again and, at a price of just 6.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game, the youngster – who has started six of the last seven – may yet find himself a place in our Fantasy plans, with showdowns against Stoke, Newcastle and Hull following on from the St Mary’s clash.

Mirallas Concern for Toffees

Elsewhere in the Toffees’ midfield, Kevin Mirallas took his tally to two goals and an assist in the last four with a deflected free-kick against the R’s. Handed a fifth successive start since returning from injury, the Belgian is starting to find his form once again but, after being stretchered off towards the end of the match, is set for ankle scans this morning, with question marks now hanging over his availability as the Gameweeks come thick and fast.

Naismith Ends Goal Drought

The Scot returned to Everton’s starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 12 after recovering from a hamstring injury. Naismith served up a goal, assist and maximum bonus, outscoring fellow forward Romelu Lukaku by 12 points to five to serve a reminder of his potential. At a price of just 4.8, he may well benefit if Mirallas is, indeed, injured, though having previously scored just once in nine appearances, the Scot needs to up his consistency to become a viable option.

Zamora Compounds Baines’ Misery

With top scorer Charlie Austin sitting out a one-match suspension, little was expected from a side that had previously netted just two goals away from home to date. Substitute Bobby Zamora replicated Barkley’s feat by also scoring his first goal of the campaign to further frustrate owners of Everton defenders, who have now gone six matches without a clean sheet. With just one set of attacking returns in his last six appearances, Leighton Baines is struggling to justify his lofty price tag and his owners were left with a single point last night after he collected a yellow card. A possible injury to Mirallas could also benefit the left-back, though, after the Belgian’s return has seen his share of dead-ball duties diminish in recent weeks.

R’s Away Day Woes Continue

If Harry Redknapp’s side are to survive, it’s clear that their displays at Loftus Road will be pivotal. Last night’s result means QPR have lost all eight road trips and conceded at least twice on every occasion, whereas in front of their own fans, they’ve dropped just two points in the last four. Encouragingly for Redknapp, up next is a run of three home fixtures in the next four (WBA, CPL, SWA) which certainly hand his side a fighting chance – with Austin averaging 6.5 points per Loftus Road appearance and Leroy Fer notching in each of his last two at home, the R’s still have reason for optimism despite last night’s showing.

Having earned two clean sheets in the last four at home, Redknapp will be keen to have Steven Caulker back for the weekend. The R’s boss later confirmed that Caulker missed out with a head injury sustained at Burnley, despite the fact that it was previously reported that he had suffered a head injury in a post-match incident.

With or without Hutton I'm sure Di Maria is capable of a haul against Villa. But the main concern would be whether or not he's actually fit to start. Not sure I would risk it until we've seen him start a game.

Been a while since I've posted one of these, but several red arrows in a row makes me think drastic action is needed:

    Forster
    Baines Clyne Dummet
    Eriksen Sanchez Yaya Fab
    Pelle Bony Austin

    [Schm, Wisdom, Duff, Jedinak]

    Changes needed gents?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Wastes of money

Which players are emerging as a waste of their hefty price tag?

Is Costa worth his £11m+ valuation? He is a consistent scorer, but with no bonus or assists is he no longer captain material?

Is Baines worth his £7m+ price tag? That's a lot of money for a lot of 1-2pt returns each week. But is his malaise down to Mirallas. With the Belgian injured will we see a better performing Baines?

Is Rooney worth his £10m+ price tag? Played in midfield, he is still scoring a goal or assist, but is that enough for that price and is it worth spending £2m or so more for RVP?

Feel free to comment on these and add your own potentially over priced players into the discussion.

I don't think he is a waste of money - purely on home form. He's a captaincy banker at home which is well worth that price tag and makes up for the away form.

If you look at it like that, all captainable players are poor value for money. Problem with Costa is he isnt really captainable.

The only decent value players usually cost below £5M.

Alot of midprice value too like Downing and Austin. I don't have Downing but wouldn't hesitate getting him in for £7.5m...he's underpriced at his current price given his returns.

Haz has 6 goals so far, all at home and 4 against piss poor teams and 1 apiece against spurs and arsenal. 10.6m is a lot for somebody struggling to score away from home and against top half teams

I ditched both a few weeks ago and am now 600th or so in the world. There are many more who did the same. I've Oscar and Hazard. Both outscoring Costa and both cheaper - Oscar especially. There are many more in that boat. Be brave - there are better choices in my opinion - but I'll admit its a debatable stance.

I think Baines is worth keeping though with Mirallas out - he really is a good prospect without the Belgian according to the stats. Pienaar also helps Baines a lot- watch out for him in the festive team sheets.

I ditched Costa about 6-7 weeks back, it was a well good move...the only reason I bought him back in is because I didn't trust any other striker to score consistent points and had money to spend.

Will ditch him again soon to bring Fabregas back in

I prefer Fabregas to Costa. If I make any changes to my Chelsea players it'll be an Oscar to Fabregas upgrade. Fabregas covers most of Costa's goals, plus he gets extra points for clean sheets, bonus, the odd goal himself and is 2m or so cheaper.

Which striker do you have in Costa's place Jonty? As per my comment below, I'm in the same position as Just A Hat here, and I don't really see Baines and Costa being outscored by many.

            Rooney, Sakho and Austin.

Of those I might switch Rooney to another...want to see how he goes. At the moment though he is cheaper than Costa and scoring roughly the same - plus has assists and bonus in his locker - Costa is just goals - alot of them mind you, but if he doesn't score more than one then he is a waste of cash that week.

Usually I'd agree, but I have Costa, Bony and Austin, and don't need to free up funds at the moment. Therefore, the question becomes, do I think any other striker will outscore Costa for the next month or so? Maybe RVP, but outside of that, no I don't.

The other issue is that I do have more pressing issues. Tadic is going this week, I want a City defender next week, and they take priority over assessing Costa and Baines.

Yep - Baines + Mirallas = waste of money.

Costa consistent - so happy. Will no dout hit 3 at the weekend. He's got explosive returns in the past.

Personally, I'm not having to worry too much about prices at the moment. The absence of Aguero has meant I can actually afford all of the players that I want/can currently fit in, which is unusual.

For instance, if I was struggling for money, I'd maybe be looking at downgrading Baines and Costa, but I have 4.1 ITB, so I don't need to. Then, it just becomes a question of who I think will score highest. Do I think 5 defenders, and 3 strikers, will outscore Baines and Costa? No, not at the moment.

Apart from Aguero every player over 10m is a waste of money this season.
However avoiding them might result in having loads of money in the bank. In such circumstances most can probably afford to have at least one luxury player in their team.

Yaya in reality is not worth 10.8 it's the Aguero cash that's made him an option.

Baines - worth if Everton stop conceding one damn goal a game.
Unlike when Chelsea had this problem, I was sure Mourihno was giving the lads the hairdryer treatment. I'm not sure Martinez cares about conceding as much.

Costa - think he still has a few braces in him, we'll see

RVP - Probably not, but it's at least a possibility these days!

      Rooney - Doubtful

      Yes, yes, and maybe.

I still believe in Costa, he's a proven goal scorer, and I can guarantee you that if I sell him, he'll score a hat trick the same GW.

Same with Baines, his record speaks for itself.

Not 100% on Rooney, but I wouldn't sell if I already owned him. If I had the money I think I'd do a straight swap from Jovetic -> Roon, but I'm 0.1 short.

If mirallas is out of the frame, Baines has a good chance of giving attacking returns and can justify his price tag, Costa on the other hand doesn't always explode , but gives regular points so his price tag is debatable

I have always believed that expensive players should only be bought if you intend to captain them at some point. Hence why I have always objected to the mass purchase of Baines. Likewise, nobody is actually going to captain Yaya unless he explodes continually like last year.

If you limit your expensive options to a few captain options, then you get the challenge of mastering the spread of value across the rest of the team. If you can master that challenge you win fpl.

But Baines isn't expensive. He's the same price range as Sigurdsson and Mirallas, and you wouldn't get them in for captaincy potential, I would think.

Even from a 'taking up a position in my squad' perspective that could be applied to forwards, taking up a defender slot costs pretty much nothing.

          Baines value = 10.1
          Jaanmat = 11.9

But you have a point, there are only 8 midfielders with higher value. I just know that on all the teams I have built from value stats excel has never thought to put Baines in.

Sure, the best value is always in the cheap(er) defenders and keepers. But at some stage, you have to upgrade and use the cash you have. I think Baines is a good upgrade from that perspective, given he's not taking up a valuable squad slot either.

It would be interesting if we could figure out a principled way to quantify the improvement you get by upgrading a top-value player (eg. Janmaat or a cheap defender). Obviously your total value will drop but you'll end up with more points.

              VORP

              Value over reduced(?) price

Basically assumes that all defenders must cost at least 4.0M, mids 5.0M and forwards 5.5M

Yeah, I was thinking something similar to that.
But rather, filling your squad with the highest value options, then upgrading them one by one based on which options give you the best VORP (with the baseline price being that of the player already in the squad).

Obviously this doesn't tell us anything about future returns, but might give us something on formations and value.

I wouldn't dream of having a player like Tiote as my 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th midfielder, so I wouldn't be interested in comparing another player with him except when choosing my 5th midfielder.

Its cost and points above having a top value player. So not tiote, but probably Jedinak, for example.

There are so many factors to take into account.

Jedinak is a decent option and is nailed on, but at that price Walters has been in terrific form since GW8, even against strong opposition.

It may or may not also be possible to improve your squad by downgrading Jedinak and upgrading elsewhere - or by upgrading Jedinak and downgrading elsewhere.

I think RVP is a waste of money. People just jump into him with the fund released from Aguero, having seen him scored three goals and one assist over the last two games.

vs Sots, the first goal is a gift from Fonte. Second goal is a gift from Forster.
vs Liverpool, the assist is a joke. It is a clear offside if it is an assist! The goal was clearly a lousy def of Liverpool leaving him so wide open.

      OVERPRICED ?

Yaya : Not overpriced if he played like last season. But of course he is not. So overpriced.
Costa : Overpriced. Also, not even a captaincy material at 11m.
Sanchez : As an attacker no. As a winger yes.
RvP: The second most overpriced player in all of FPL.

The most overpriced player for me is : Sturridge

If you think Sturridge is overpriced, then what about all the other players who are currently out injured (Walcott for instance)?

He was an essential player last season, and I know that Suarez has gone and that Liverpool have been rubbish without them, but it is still possible that he might hit his best form in the new year once he is fit again, especially if Liverpool can get their transfers right in the January transfer window.

No matter how good form he hits, he certainly does not belong the same price bracket as that of the Costas, the Agueros or the RvPs.

Last season, Sturridge scored 197 points at 6.8ppg.
            Aguero scored 156 at 6.8ppg.
            Rooney scored 190 at 6.6ppg.
            RVP scored 112 at 5.3ppg.

This season, Aguero has 7.0ppg, Costa has 5.8ppg, Rooney has 4.8ppg, and RVP has 4.7ppg

I agree that Sturridge is unlikely to reach those heights this season, but if he did then he would certainly belong in the same price bracket as the others.

Interestingly, with all our Aguero spare change, a lot of us seem to be happy to spend "unnecessary" cash on the pricier players who will virtually guarantee us 5 points per game, (plus one game suspended every 5 matches).

Another week where I have Naismith and Wisdom BAPs Goals and CS's on bench. It's a theme. Third time this year...

I was going to ditch Baines this week, but with Mirallas out he'll be back on set piece duty now... so onto my question - was Azpil injured the past few games? I missed that info - Luis at 5.3...

  11. More Baines and Mirallas Stats
    A.T
    • 15 Years
    11 years, 1 month ago

    Baines with Mirallas 0, 2, 12, 1, 1, 2, 1

    Baines without Mirallas 1, 10, 2, 2, 15, 7, 7, 11

These are for games in which Mirallas has played at least 60 mins.

So does Mirallas effect Baines' output or is it case of Baines being a flat track bully?

Fixtures in which Baines scored 2 points or less:

lei, ARS, CHE, liv, mun, tot, HUL, mci, QPR.

All other fixtures were Baines scored 7 or more

wba, CRY, AVL, bur, SWA, sun,

ok there are 3 easier games were Baines only scored 2. Lei away, first game of the season to a promoted club. HUL, when they were in poor form and QPR last night.

So is it worth having Baines with or without Mirallas? I think so, if his fixtures are good.

      Posted this last night...

      Baines FPL Stats so far…

4th highest scoring Defender on 74pts
      Scored 2 goals, joint highest
Assisted 6, double Janmaat in 2nd place with 3
15 Bonus points is the highest for any defender
Been in the weekly Dream Team 4 times (once more than Aguero with 3)

After seeing this written down its clear to me that I’m keeping, especially with the ball hogging Mirallas possibly out for a while.

My argument is that his stats on the whole are WAY DOWN on last Season, particularly his dead ball striking, as evinced by his corner-taking stats, or lack of them.

He used to TOP both these tables regularly, now he barely bothers the scorers.

Yes, perhaps so, but the upper echelons of that table are always full of attacking/creative mids. He was only marginally below Fabregas earlier in the season and streets ahead of all the other defenders.

Barkley tends to take them from right - or to change things up when there's been a few.

Mirallas should have been awarded a penalty last night IMO. His shirt was pulled/pushed by Dunne. Would have been a Baines Pen and possibly 4-0, which could have seen QPR lose presence. Some dodgy reffing last night — lots of booing.

Comparison tool says a lot. Compare Baines with himself for the GW ranges 5-11 and 12-16 (without and with Mirallas). Huge difference in both involvement, crosses and goal threat.

Defending stats are the only ones that are better, more interceptions, and more aerial duels and tackles won. He has taken on a completely different role with Mirallas in the team.

Yep. Its certainly possible to predict Baines' points. Everyone jumped on their bandwagon when their fixtures turned around GW7 and have reaped the rewards. When Mirralles returned and it became clear it was badly affecting Baines that was the time to sell.

At the moment Everton's fixtures are still tough. IMO its still best to avoid Baines till their fixtures swing for the better.

The stats all point towards improvement without miralles, but they were also letting in lots of goals in those early games, now they don't, which means being more defensive. Even watching the last few games you can see baines doesn't overlap, no matter who is on his side of the pitch. This must be a tactic.

There's no doubt Mirallas has an effect on him though, as far as his attacking intent is concerned, that's nothing new. He gets far less free kicks these days of course but he's still on pens and he's got baps in him so if his fixtures are good I see no problem having him. Bit pricey for a season keeper though.

Good work. I totally agree the presence of Mirallas seriously impacted Baine's FPL points.

For instance last night game vs QPR, Mirallas and Baines stood infront of a freekick... normally Baines should have attempted for it since the position is better for left-footer. However for god sake, Mirallas grabbed the chance and scored a fluke.

I am happy if Mirallas is out for some time. Haha.

I know its not a popular opinion but with mirallas on field there is more chance of Baines assisting whenever he pass to Kevin because he always go for goals rather than passing to any body else. Having said that still Baines is def much much better without Kevin

Tempted by Baines to Bavies to free up some cash.

I mean, the guys practically have the same name. Has Bavies ousted Rose as favoured LB?

All 3 Everton goals could have been awarded as own goals. Naismith was the only one which was going on target but the keeper pushed the ball onto a QPR def.

    1 FT, 4.9 itb

    Best move lads?
    A Dzeko to RVP
    B Dzeko to Kane
C Dzeko, Boyd to Kane, Silva (-4) - benching Siggy this week
D Dzeko, Bartley to Kane, Zab (-4)

    Hazard, Siggy, Boyd, Miralles*, Schneiderlin*
    RVP, Costa, Bony

    1.3m ITB, 1 FT

What to do? Bench in a bad way with suspensions & injuries. Feel I need Man City cover or Eriksen. Any ideas please folks?

I have a spare £3m in the bank... what should I do? (Already used my FT this week.)

    Heaton / Gilks
    Ivanovic / Bertrand / Taylor / Hutton / Moore
    Sanchez / Hazard / Sigurdsson / Downing / Boyd
    Costa / Rooney / Austin

Obviously Moore needs to go, but I'm reluctant to spend -4 on selling him. I'd also like to sell Bertrand and Sigurdsson, but not sure about who to get in for them? I was set on Baines, but his returns seem to have dried up. Opinions on Silva as a replacement for Sigurdsson? Feel like I need cover for their next few fixtures.

      I'm running the Hazard risk.

Stoke have conceded more penalties at home this season than any other team.
Okay, so only 2, but also conceded a lot of big chances at home.

    Wisdom, Chambers, Marney (-4)

    Costa to bony?
    Have haz and siggy
Frees up money for a siggy/Downing to Sanchez for qpr haul
Sell siggy lose .5 if I want him back but only .1 if Downing
And why is siggy 7 and I has him since the start and he is only 6.5 in my team?
