Cesc Fabregas grabs a goal and assist as Chelsea ease past Stoke 2-0. John Terry also finds the net as the Blues earn a fifth clean sheet in six, though Eden Hazard gives Fantasy managers cause for concern after limping off in the dying minutes at the Britannia.

Consistent Cesc Delivers Again

Sold by over 356,000 FPL managers due to his one-match suspension against Hull the previous weekend, the Blues playmaker returned to form with a vengeance last night. Handed the role in “the hole” as Oscar dropped to the Blues’ bench, Fabregas bagged a goal and assist to steer Chelsea three points clear of City at the summit and take his personal tally to two goals and 12 assists in the first 17 Gameweeks. Now up to third in the FPL midfield standings, the Spaniard has earned his owners points in 11 of his 16 appearances for the Blues – Eden Hazard has managed a goal or assist in nine of his 17 league outings by comparison.

Hazard Concern for Blues

Forced off with an ankle problem towards the end of last night’s encounter, the Belgian had been the victim of numerous clumsy challenges by the home side throughout. Hazard’s assist in last night’s win – just his third away from home all season – ensured he remains ahead of Fabregas in the FPL standings and kept his form ticking over ahead of Friday’s home clash with West Ham. Bearing in mind he has scored in each of his last five at the Bridge, any update on the Belgian’s fitness will be eagerly awaited by Fantasy managers. Encouragingly, Mourinho failed to mention any problem during his post-match briefing, whilst Hazard is reported to have replied “don’t worry” when quizzed by reporters on his weekend availability.

Blues Backline in the Points

Last night’s victory means Mourinho’s side have now served up five clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks. The Blues boss reverted to his first-choice back-four as Filipe Luis dropped to the bench but despite his tinkering, Chelsea head into the upcoming trio of quick-fire Gameweeks in their most resilient form of the season – they’re up to eight shut-outs for the campaign now, joint-top with Southampton.

John Terry grabbed his first goal of the season to send his side three points clear of City. The Chelsea skipper headed into last night’s match as the only member of Jose Mourinho’s regular back-four without a goal or assist to his name but needed just two minutes to rectify that record after nodding home the winner. Priced at just 6.3 to Branislav Ivanovic’s 7.2, Terry now sits just five points behind the Serbian – an ownership of just 7% in the FPL game highlights his differential potential.

Costa’s Toils Continue

It’s a single goal in four appearances for the Blues popular striker, whose two-point return proved a bitter disappointment for his 59% of FPL owners. From Gameweek 8 onwards, Costa has managed just 24 points – granted, he missed three of those matches through injury and suspension but his inability to produce the goods is having a significant effect across the Fantasy games, with many managers captaining him on a regular basis. Costa was drafted in by over 360,000 in the previous three Gameweeks as a result of Sergio Aguero’s injury but many may be thinking twice after a weekend that saw a number of budget and mid-price forwards continue their fine form.

I don't think Hazard will be rested for Westham's clash if he is fit. Mou will see Westham as the team in form and more dangerous than a demoralized Soton and inconsistent Tottenham at WHL. Plus Hazard is key in Chelsea' style of play at Stamford bridge where teams come to defend and he also plays better at home. He can rest him for the Soton game where Chelsea will probably defend and play on the counter. Hazard's ability of unlocking defenses will be less required in such a game. Schurle will do for that game.

How do people balance point hits versus team value? If player values are moving, can taking advantage of this justify using a transfer? I find myself doing this often, and am now miles behind my ML leader, but with a more valuable team!

I try to not play the money game too much. I have somehow had good players in from the start so TV is about 107 at the moment. but that's down to luck.

Go for the players that you think will score - and if they do you're going to be on the rises anyway

It was a great tactic last season..and for seasons before that. Sadly this years rules don't make it quite so profitable.

I think folk easily forget how it used to be at the start of FPL, the team values were lower than they are even now after the changes they have made. 🙂

The last few seasons it was a decent tactic, but with less movement this year I think it's pointless

      Points>Value

I think this season more than any other TV is less important. There is so much good value, especially up front that it's easier to get in the big bucks players.

      Dont chase value, chase points.

Because points are the reason why value increase, not the other way round.

If you chase value, you are merely chasing points, which have passed. And if you do not know, not every player can score well in every game. With a good performance, there will be a poor performance, unless your are Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, Henry or Aguero. For the more statistically inclined, it's called regression to the mean.

So if you are chasing value, you are more likely than not chasing after the next poor performance.

Of course, this is simplifying things quite a bit, but should remain the essence behind your transfer decisions.

I see the logic. The regression to the mean makes sense, but two things upset it: the coach changes formation (Mirallas sitting on Baines feet, Fabregas pushed way back), and player form. The form in particular is a tough one to respond to. At least if there's a formation change then that can be reported, and maybe predicted. If e.g. Baines has a groin niggle, then he won't be as effective, but he'll keep that schtum.

          Yup, you're almost there!

E.g. Baines after a series of good performances have risen or is going to rise in value. Cue a dash to get him in so as to build team value/not to get priced out.

But the thing is you would have missed out on his good performances, and only get his 1-2 pointers subsequently.

This is similar to the stock market where people buy high and sell low. When a stock starts rising in price, people rush to get in cos of greed. Then when it tanks (because when prices rise, there will be a fall someday) and people then sell cos of fear. The net result is a heavy loss.

The only players which are immune to this are extremely rare, such as Ronaldo and Messi.

For all other players, the smart move is to buy low and sell high. Get in before the market sees the player and then sell when the player's value rise to a level that is not sustainable with his performances.

e.g. I sold Costa to Benteke right when Benteke got back from suspension as Costa no assists, no bonus, was a card magnet and didnt look sharp.

I also sold Sanchez and bought Giroud when Aguero was out as I realised Sanchez was no longer the focal point. Profited big time from these trades.

Noobs would call me crazy for selling costa and sanchez when they were at their peak valuation. And for buying Benteke when he has not scored a single goal all season and for buying giroud when he only had 4,2,1,2 for his previous performances.

Uhhhhh huh, now let's hear all the stories where you sold Hazard for Walcott and he got injured again.

            Or you know, something similar.

I guess the point is if you buy good players low and sell high you are left with a team of bad players. Now I can't tell you if Costa -> Benteke is a good move or not, but by deliberately looking for a low priced out of form player you think may explode you surely over overlook form players like Bony, Austin, Sakho, Kane, Pelle.

Let's say you pull out a genius move and buy Sanchez at 10.5, his value goes up to 11.5 so you sell, get about 10.9 and buy Giroud. Sanchez is consistently getting points through this period but you made 0.4 so hey ho. Now what do you do when Giroud gets injured or Sanchez gets a couple of braces? You gonna buy him back for 11.5?

In this time their points are basically identical, but if Sanchez gets injured I can buy basically whoever I want.

This is fine when it works out like in the examples you gave, but if your strategy is to go for player who people don't want rather than the ones in form, you surely end up with a fair few examples where it all goes wrong. You also miss out on point hauls for in form players.

Hey Cdawgg totally agree with what you're saying, that's why when I was making my original point above I mentioned it was "simplifying things quite a bit".

To clarify, I meant to sell players whose value is no longer sustainable with performance. I look out for both players in form who are undervalued (from underlying stats) and also do look out for players who are in form and "popular" and may or may not be undervalued. And of course transfer decisions should be made in the overall context of a team, not just in an isolated one to one transfer.

So in my example it would be transferring out Costa and Sanchez.

At point of transferring out, Costa had been overperforming (11 goals in 11 games, if this continued he would score 38 goals in 38 games). I thought he was not worth his valuation with his zero assists, few bonus and many yellow cards, so I ditched for Benteke + 2.5m (focal pt, beast who can score and assist, always gets bonus, watched him play and he has that assassin aura like Aguero) to upgrade other areas of the team.

Sanchez as well, had been analysing his numbers and got him in at 10.3 and sold off at 11.1 because I don't think he's worth that price anymore. Got hazard which just got into form and relatively undervalued (10.2, now 10.6).

Believe this season only Aguero is essential and befitting the elite status. In that case value is not that important since there is a lack of elite, expensive players. In fact I have 3.1m spare and can quickly make any moves I want. But of course things will change as the season progresses, might have to change strategy then! Good luck!

                    Just a correction:

"To clarify, I meant to sell players whose value is no longer sustainable with performance. I look out for both players in form who are undervalued (from underlying stats)"

in form in this case means in form based on underlying performance, not necessarily goals or points but important metrics such as shots in box, chances created, role/position on pitch

I see what you're saying, I must admit I'm bit of a romantic who gets quite attached to some players (still rocking Ivan for example). I probably ditched Costa around the same time as you but my thinking was 'this player is too expensive for these crappy 5-6 point returns' I didn't realise I was actually being a stock trading master mind 😀

I think where we differ is I use my money to keep what I think is the strongest team to get me points. You try to make money on players who you think will get you the most points.

On Sanchez for example, you believe his value no longer reflects his points thanks to the return of Giroud and that you can find better value elsewhere. I think he is the best Arsenal player (fixture cover) who will be consistent enough to justify the 10.5 I paid for him vs other midfielders at that price, and believe he still has the potential to be explosive... and I sure as hell ain't buying him back for 11.5!

It's funny you should mention both Costa and Sanchez, everytime I look at me teamsheet I squint my eyes to see how they're justifying their price tag. One of the things that makes me reluctant to act though, is that the successful teams often contain them both

Actually I would suggest that the successful teams are successful because they had them when they exploded, doesn't mean they will remain successful because they have them now.

I think Costa will do well again, once he overcomes this dip in form, for how long I do not know. Also hope to see more assists and bonus to his game before bringing him back in.

Sanchez's threat has actually dipped with Giroud back as he is no longer the focal point. He should still do well but whether that performance is worth 10.5m - 11m, I'm not too sure. Depends on your team! 🙂

Right, 4 point hit taken, bench looks better now?

    Panti
    Baines Zabaleta Clyne
    Alexis Hazard Eriksen Yaya
    Austin Bony(c) Naismith(vc)

    Elliott Downing Trippier Yun

Crazy to consider Naismith(c)? Everton have had 2 days more test than Stoke and need to bounce back?
