Four more players toppled off the Suspension Tightrope this week, with a couple of culpable parties earning their fifth yellow card during Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby. Cheick Tiote is unavailable for Newcastle’s upcoming trip to Old Trafford, whilst the Black Cats’ Connor Wickham sits out a plum home encounter with Hull.

The Tigers’ midfielder Jake Livermore will also miss that Stadium of Light encounter and Southampton will travel to Palace on Boxing Day without the services of skipper Jose Fonte, as Ronald Koeman prepares for yet another defensive re-shuffle.

In terms of the Tightrope, another three players made their way onto four yellows for the season – Santi Cazorla, John O’Shea and Erik Pieters are the latest new entries, taking the total to 32 players. Pieters’ inclusion means Stoke now have four players just a single card away from a ban, more than any other side.

O’Shea’s team-mate Lee Cattermole is now up to eight yellows in just 16 league appearances after being booked in the North East derby. The midfield enforcer had picked up a total of two reds and nine yellows across the previous couple of campaigns due to a lack of pitch time but is clearly keen to atone for lost time. If Cattermole is cautioned in both of the next two, he’ll face the ignominy of toppling from the Tightrope twice before the New Year is upon us.

Elsewhere, another two players fell foul of the referee’s wrath in Gameweek 17. Liverpool’s Fabio Borini made an impression for all the wrong reasons against Arsenal at Anfield. Replacing Lazar Markovic midway through the second period, the Italian collected a pair of yellows in just 16 minutes and will be unavailable for Friday’s trip to Burnley.

Villa’s Gabby Agbonlahor was due to serve a three-match ban after being sent off for serious foul play during last Saturday’s home draw with United. Earlier this afternoon, the FA overturned that suspension and the forward is available for selection with immediate effect.

Remaining on the sidelines are Hull midfielder Tom Huddlestone (sitting out the second of a four-match suspension) and Villa’s Kieran Richardson, who is serving the second of a three-match ban this Friday.

Paul Lambert welcomes back Alan Hutton and Tom Cleverley, though, as the midlands outfit look to push on from the draw with United. Southampton trio Morgan Schneiderlin, Victor Wanyama and Florin Gardos are also available for selection as Ronald Koeman’s side head to Selhurst Park.

Mario Balotelli is back for Liverpool’s visit to Burnley after serving a one-match ban for his recent social media posts. The FA have revealed that they decided against dishing out a longer sentence due to the striker’s sincere and honest explanation.

Another poor GW for me, 8 reds in the last 9 now!

Despite this, I still like the look of my team, am I totally brainwashed?

    Hart (Gilks)
    Baines Dummett Wisdom (Saylor Duff)
    Hazard Sanchez Silva Siggy (Marney)
    Costa Bony Kane

0.6 in the bank and 1FT, what would you do this GW?

Was thinking of doing a boring transfer and getting rid of Duff? Any thoughts?

Getting rid of Duff is a good idea, but your defense looks very thin and I don't like the double Newcastle. Free up funds from either Costa or Baines out I would think, but tough to do with just the one free..

I don't mind the double up for decent fixtures, it should have worked last GW. Ideally I'd rarely be playing Saylor anyways, it's just he's the cheapest starter and he isn't Yun.

I don't fancy a hit this week given that we can't be sure anyone will certainly play. Costa and Baines have been a pain recently but both have decent fixtures and should at least start.

          11 years, 3 months ago

No I am not suggesting a hit at all just a plan for how to use the next couple transfers. With rotation you should expect to have your bench coming up to play quite a bit in the next few and I would think it's better to diversify your investments especially since Newcastle only have one game they can conceivably keep a clean over this period.

so we have Bony for another 3 matches..

was this past gameweek a rest for him so that he could play the 3 before going off for AFCON or is there a chance he doesn't start all?

Reports saying he is ok and they have less cover there. He is more essential to them. They have faith in the other striker and he often come on for Zbony but if fit Siggy will play all 3 but definitely not all the minutes.

    Guzan, Heaton
    Zaba, Azpi, Dummett, Duff, Yun
    Sanchez, Hazard, Yaya, Downing, Boyd
    Austin, Costa, Bony
    1 FT, 0.8 itb

    Thinking of, for a -4:

    Costa > Giroud
    Duff > Terry or Kolarov

Rationale: Get a stronger defender who can produce, increase depth of bench, replace Costa with Giroud who is likely = in terms of probable production. Leaning towards Terry who plays every match and I prefer to have 3 Blues instead of 3 Man City.

    Any comments? Thanks!

    My team...

    Guzan (Given)
    Baines Azpi Zaba (Dummett Moore)
    Downing Eriksen Sánchez Hazard (Boyd)
    Costa Austin Bony

    1FT 0.6 in the bank.

    a) Moore > Wisdom OR a Sunderland defender (prepare for rotation risk)

    b) Bony > Giroud

    c) Both

    d) Save FT

    Thoughts please?

I'm holding Baines, Siggy and Rooney for this GW and re-evaluating.

Costa the other one I'd consider getting rid of if I had him and Krul only if he's your only playing GK.

All true, next week want to do Rooney/Costa > Austin and free up cash for a big def or mid upgrade.

Probs just Foster > pants this week...

Moore, because he isn't playing and we'll need our benches. Krul is back soon I think.

Yeah but Foster (MCI) is my other keeper 😮

Thinking of getting Panti for Krul.

Problem will Moore is there is absolutely no one for 4.0m or below is there?

Foster could get save points though. I was tempted to do the same with McCarthy->Pants this week as Adrian's fixture is crap. Removed Duff instead for Vergini.

No one really below 4.0 except Taylor, but his fixture is crap.

why are people SO certain that RVP starts vs Newcastle? as a United fan, I could see it as a possibility since he was pulled off after 60 vs Villa but with Falcao back and ADM nearly there as well (I mean for a start) and then Spurs away only TWO days later, it would not surprise me at all to see LVG rest RVP who has not missed a PL match since he returned to the fold following summer rest and has been averaging 83 minutes a game

      Lloris

      Baines, Mangala, Naylor

      Yaya, Hazard (c), Sanchez, Siggy

      Rooney, Austin, Sakho

      Gilks, Boyd, Hutton, Cameron

      1 FT 1.6 ITB

Current thinking is Cameron and Sakho to Vergini and Kane for -4 and bench Austin

You could be right and he could be fully rested but his early withdraw last weekend points to some minutes on boxing day, not captioning him though because of this uncertainty.
