Ronald Koeman has wasted little time in continuing his restructuring of the Southampton first-team squad by snapping up winger Eljero Elia on loan from Werder Bremen. The deal – which also affords the Saints an option of making the move a permanent one – went through in the first minute of the winter transfer window, though doesn’t come without controversy after the player caught the headlines for a number of off-field incidents.

Koeman has moved quickly to play down the Mario Balotelli comparisons and has insisted that, once the new boy gets his fitness up to speed, he’ll be handed the opportunity to establish himself at St Mary’s:

“If I had doubts about his private life I wouldn’t sign him. It’s the press and rumours, it’s not true. We need really good players who want to develop themselves and be professional here. He’s a serious boy and he wants the chance to play football. He has the chance to play football at Southampton. It’s a good step, a big step for him. He’s still not 100 per cent because he didn’t play the last few months. But for the next weekend he will be prepared and he has to take his chance.”

The History

A product of the Den Haag youth system in his native Holland, Elia made his professional debut in 2004 as a 17-year-old and, on the back of six goals and four assists in 60 appearances, was snapped up by FC Twente after falling out with Den Haag coach Lex Schoenmaker.

Under the guidance of Steve McLaren, Elia’s performances enhanced his burgeoning reputation – 16 goals and 12 assists in 83 appearances earned him the accolade of Dutch Football Talent of the Year in 2009 and, having spurned the advances of both Ajax and PSV, signed for German outfit Hamburg in July that year in a deal that cost the club €8.5m.

His time in the Bundesliga was marred by an ankle injury and a period spent on the sidelines due to an infection caused by a poorly-applied tattoo. With his pitch time somewhat limited, Elia managed eight goals and 12 assists in 65 outings before making his way to Italy to sign for Juventus. Five appearances and one season later, he was back on the move after the Old Lady granted him a transfer request. Elia headed back to the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen but a contribution of five goals and eight assists in 68 matches was overshadowed by off-field antics, including social media spats, which ultimately saw him forced onto the periphery.

On the international stage, the winger scored three times in 23 appearances at youth level. Elia has subsequently featured 28 times for the Netherlands senior side and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Initially signed as cover due to Sadio Mane’s Africa Cup of Nations call-up, Elia seems poised to battle with Shane Long for a starting berth after the Senegal international was ruled out of action for the next four to six weeks with a calf injury. Frustratingly for Koeman, Mane’s loss comes at a time when he had finally found his feet in the English top flight and notched in three successive league outings before being forced off against Chelsea on New Year’s Day.

Whilst Elia has the same sort of blistering pace and trickery on the ball as Mane, as the above stats show, he has lacked an end product to his game that is likely to initially deter Fantasy managers. Elsewhere in the Saints’ midfield, Koeman will be buoyed by Dusan Tadic’s recent return to form – the Serbian has a goal and two assists in his last four appearances after a barren autumn period – and with the Saints entering the New Year on the back of a draw with Chelsea and win over Arsenal, there’s reason for optimism at St Mary’s once again.

Certainly, one look at the fixture ticker shows the Saints’ schedule is set to take a significant turn for the better around Gameweek 23. Koeman’s side face four home fixtures (SWA, WHM, LIV, CPL) and trips to QPR and West Brom during that period, but unless Elia can improve upon his consistency, it seems we may be best served to focus on Koeman’s defence with our winter Wildcards, with Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne remaining the best bets. Mane’s recent rise to prominence is also worth considering once he’s back in contention, leaving Elia a tough task to cement a place in our future plans.

You always wait unless price changes could make it so you cant afford it. Injuries happen every single day. Playing "the market" is far less valueable this season, imo.

I'm struggling to see the sense in wild carding now and "leaving money in the bank" for kun. If you're playing your WC now, maximise your team on the pitch over these next three weeks! Who cares if you have to take a 4 point hit? Leaving 2m in the bank is much more crazy than that.

Also, those planning on just swapping costa or rvp for kun, are you really going to do that if they blast six goals in the next three games?

If you're playing your WC now make sure you're doing it to steal a March on those playing it in three weeks. If you're not, why on earth have you pulled the trigger?

    1. Jay_
      11 years, 7 months ago

That's exactly what I've done , RVP 3 decent fixtures , straight swap for Kun when his back

So you'd do that. No buts. If rvp blasts six in three say? Well doable with those fixtures.

Cus RvP isnt half the footballer Aguero is, and United arent half the team that City are. If RvP scores 6 in 3 games for the rest of his career, id be very surprised.

Well yes, which brings me to point one. In what way is rvp the best option for next three weeks. Surely say, ings and angel. Or silva and Austin better than rvp and, at a guess, boyd?

              Idk, didnt really look that closely at your original post. However, i do think there are hefty merits on "saving" money to upgrade x-striker to Aguero whenever hes passed fit. Unless you plan on going without him, which would be quite the gamble. Then for me it boils down to;
              a) how long can you postpone the actual usage of the wc
              b) who do you believe the most in for the x-number of weeks until we expect Aguero to return, within the price range.

Not worth it for me. If Sanchez/Hazard had tricky away fixtures I could be talked into it, but Newcastle at home with Hazard's form is irresistible. I am feeling good about owning Jovetic though, he's flying under the radar due to the Kangasm.

Current midfield is Sanchez Hazard Silva Downing (useless sub)
Im thinking wildcard midfield Sanchez Hazard Di Maria Sterling Boyd
Just small changes in defense (Zaba out for cheaper one like Cissokho)
And then Costa out for Aguero when he is back (also have Austin and Kane and I think I keep them in WC)
    Would you?
    A) Wait and play this week Silva+Downing instead of Di Maria+Sterling
    B) Play wildcard, no need to wait
    C) Play wildcard but change ...what?

I'm new to BPL fantasy football, so I get to pick my whole team, HOWEVER, if I do not pick AGÜERO can I get him in for a free transfer later on? Thanks

Nope. Wait until next season. Get Bony

      No.

You are barred from getting him until next season. 😉

You can get him but his so expensive you will have to do transfers to accommodate him , so get RVP now and when his fit swap to Aguero ( they are the same price so straight swap)

This has all the hallmarks of a massive Baines differential coming up this weekend...

ADM & Ings , those are my 2 trump cards on my wildcard, feel very confident of pulling away from rivals over next 4 weeks with those 2

At the expense of Terry? I see a Chelsea def and Haz as being nailed so that only leaves room for either Costa or Fab.

Costa is playing WC now (will be easier to get in Aguero)
      Fab in all other cases

Best one week punt before WC:

    A. Austin > Jovetic
    B. Sterling > Chadli
    C. Dummett > Skrtel

    Cheers

Di Maria. Cheapest, highest points per game (Even though it's dragged down by his last two appearances of 13 and 30 minutes, respectively).

    Evening All

    Which 3 to bench??

    Adrian, Foster
    Zab, Azpi, Debuchy, Hutton, (S.Taylor)
    Sanchez, Haz, Silva, Sterling, Siggy
    Costa, Austin, Kane

S.Taylor definitely benched obviously, but the other 3 aren't quite so straight forward!

    Cheers

Adrian and Siggy. All defenders could possibly get cleensheets. Bench either Hutton or debuchy

ADM and Giroud or Cazorla and Falcao? I'm on the latter at the moment, the striker is only temporary until Kun is 100% fit.
