Ronald Koeman has wasted little time in continuing his restructuring of the Southampton first-team squad by snapping up winger Eljero Elia on loan from Werder Bremen. The deal – which also affords the Saints an option of making the move a permanent one – went through in the first minute of the winter transfer window, though doesn’t come without controversy after the player caught the headlines for a number of off-field incidents.

Koeman has moved quickly to play down the Mario Balotelli comparisons and has insisted that, once the new boy gets his fitness up to speed, he’ll be handed the opportunity to establish himself at St Mary’s:

“If I had doubts about his private life I wouldn’t sign him. It’s the press and rumours, it’s not true. We need really good players who want to develop themselves and be professional here. He’s a serious boy and he wants the chance to play football. He has the chance to play football at Southampton. It’s a good step, a big step for him. He’s still not 100 per cent because he didn’t play the last few months. But for the next weekend he will be prepared and he has to take his chance.”

The History

A product of the Den Haag youth system in his native Holland, Elia made his professional debut in 2004 as a 17-year-old and, on the back of six goals and four assists in 60 appearances, was snapped up by FC Twente after falling out with Den Haag coach Lex Schoenmaker.

Under the guidance of Steve McLaren, Elia’s performances enhanced his burgeoning reputation – 16 goals and 12 assists in 83 appearances earned him the accolade of Dutch Football Talent of the Year in 2009 and, having spurned the advances of both Ajax and PSV, signed for German outfit Hamburg in July that year in a deal that cost the club €8.5m.

His time in the Bundesliga was marred by an ankle injury and a period spent on the sidelines due to an infection caused by a poorly-applied tattoo. With his pitch time somewhat limited, Elia managed eight goals and 12 assists in 65 outings before making his way to Italy to sign for Juventus. Five appearances and one season later, he was back on the move after the Old Lady granted him a transfer request. Elia headed back to the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen but a contribution of five goals and eight assists in 68 matches was overshadowed by off-field antics, including social media spats, which ultimately saw him forced onto the periphery.

On the international stage, the winger scored three times in 23 appearances at youth level. Elia has subsequently featured 28 times for the Netherlands senior side and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Initially signed as cover due to Sadio Mane’s Africa Cup of Nations call-up, Elia seems poised to battle with Shane Long for a starting berth after the Senegal international was ruled out of action for the next four to six weeks with a calf injury. Frustratingly for Koeman, Mane’s loss comes at a time when he had finally found his feet in the English top flight and notched in three successive league outings before being forced off against Chelsea on New Year’s Day.

Whilst Elia has the same sort of blistering pace and trickery on the ball as Mane, as the above stats show, he has lacked an end product to his game that is likely to initially deter Fantasy managers. Elsewhere in the Saints’ midfield, Koeman will be buoyed by Dusan Tadic’s recent return to form – the Serbian has a goal and two assists in his last four appearances after a barren autumn period – and with the Saints entering the New Year on the back of a draw with Chelsea and win over Arsenal, there’s reason for optimism at St Mary’s once again.

Certainly, one look at the fixture ticker shows the Saints’ schedule is set to take a significant turn for the better around Gameweek 23. Koeman’s side face four home fixtures (SWA, WHM, LIV, CPL) and trips to QPR and West Brom during that period, but unless Elia can improve upon his consistency, it seems we may be best served to focus on Koeman’s defence with our winter Wildcards, with Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne remaining the best bets. Mane’s recent rise to prominence is also worth considering once he’s back in contention, leaving Elia a tough task to cement a place in our future plans.

Will you (or anyone) ever really trust going against Pantilimon in goals... and bank on a Burnley CS? I'm having doubts as to the merits of it despite fixtures.
No Chelsea defender but that's a personal call... I'd get Terry.

      Attack is great.

Yeah I am still not sure of the double Burnley defence but chelsea/south aside none of the top teams have looked great at the back.

        Pantilmon/Heaton have good rotation.

Fabregas or Cahill is tearing me apart!

So many options in Mids and Defence that either spot is hard to decide upon. I am leaning to Costa out so I can have both a Che defender and Haz/Fabs.

Current WC team for this GW. Your thoughts?

    Heaton

    Azpi - Lescott - Wasilewski

    Sanchez - Sterling - Fabregas - ADM - Hazard

    Rooney - Kane
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    Pantilimon - Barnes - Alderweireld - Cameron

Rooney is just a temporary placeholder for Aguero, I have enough ITB to upgrade.

3-5-2 isn't widely used on here but I just like the look of the midfielders far more than strikers at the moment

Not a fan of Wasilewski as I can't see Lei being anything other than whipping boys.
I'd get me some JT over Azpi for added goal threat. And I'd lose Sterling for Chadli or even Boyd.

Yeah, I agree. To be fair though, most already have Sanchez/Haz/Kane and when Aguero comes back most would move heaven and earth to get him in even without a wildcard. Beyond those 4 there's quite a few options.

15 Points. I am a bad trader. I feel great every time I make a trade and imagine this colossal return, only to see that had I not made the trade, I would have had more points. This came to fruition when I lost my first round cup match to a dead team, and when I have recently lost 3 of 6 h2h matches in my mini league to dead teams. In many cases, the best move is no move, and yet, we are compelled to make a move because it's the reason we play the dang game!

I've had these runs in the past myself but I've also experienced the opposite aswell where gains are made.
The greater good has to be seen in the making of transfers in the long run,
Fixtures will shift, injury/bans will occur, and form players will surface hence the need a manager has for free transfers and hits.

Doesn't seem much real need for it , we all get a fixture list and subs and the opportunity to change more for a 4 point penalty

I think this year though will not result in a template as much . Can see big differences between early and late players

This season there isn't an exact template though.

The Jan WC might ensure that everyone brings in Hazard and Sanchez who didnt already have them, but there's a lot of choice in the rest of the midfield.
Silva, Di Maria, Sterling, Eriksen, Fabregas, Cazorla.
And then the big range of mid price midfielders like Siggy, Downing, Chadli, Johnson..

Aguero will be a must up front when he's back, but the other striker positions are up for grabs, with Costa, Sturridge, Giroud, all options before we even gets to the many budget options

Have you seen the Spurs mini league? http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/397087/standings/

Harry Kane had himself last week! Only VC though 😛

Tom Carroll ranked 3k! Remember he was near the top at one stage a few years back

A post talking about the problems with Shaqiri from a Bayern Fan (not that I listen to fans too much but everyone uses them as support for him so might as well use one that goes against him).

    http://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/2rinc2/the_shaqiri_saga/

Talk about his playing style and how he behaves through social media. Worth a read.

Who would u prefer in a wildcard team.....Downing (seems to be nailed on) or Chadli (who may just be going through a great run of form and can't be guaranteed a start long term)...thanks!

I considered that, Hutton could easily keep a clean sheet and get an assist, but Clichy just had two assists last game as well.

Hard to predict when you're looking at such a short span of time. A keeper can easily blank 3 times in a row due to bad luck, but I guess I'd say Heaton. The fixtures don't get much better than Burnley's for the next 3.

    Heaton (Pants)
Terry - Clichy - Okore (Wisdom - Berts)
Sanchez - Siggy - Hazard - Silva (Boyd)
    Costa (c) - Austin - Kane

Nothing wrong with it but I would rather have Dimaria instead of Silva/Siggy and maybe some other def instead Clichy.

Austin -> Giroud or take punt with Ings.

We'll find out when they play Hull

I think Pulis will keep Wisdom Lescott and Pocognoli and it's Dawson v McAuley for other cb spot. But I'm just guessing.

West Brom have been ok defensively and I think Pulis won't be making drastic changes unless he signs a new defenders or two.

Taking Jovetic out before the Arsenal game & Baines before WBA, is surely madness, no?
Thinking of spreading out these 3 moves before the WC
    (2 FT's, 0.8m ITB)

Jovetic ------> Berahino now (HUL) or Kane next week (SUN)
    Baines ------> Alderweireld (new)
Marney -----> AdM (Have RVP) double-up on United for LEI
