Manchester City bolstered their forward options last week by snapping up Wilfried Bony from Swansea City. Arriving for a reported fee of £28m, the 26-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract for the champions and will be available for selection once his Africa Cup of Nations commitments with Ivory Coast come to an end.

Manuel Pellegrini took time out to discuss his swoop with the club’s official website and cited Bony’s excellent record in the Premier League as one of the key reasons for his acquisition:

“He is very difficult to mark because he is so strong. He is an intelligent footballer who has skill and power. His goals record has been excellent since he came to England. He adapted very quickly to the game here and I think he will settle in at City quickly. He will be a very good addition to our squad. We now have four top-class strikers and I am looking forward to seeing them work together.”

The History

Bony’s career got underway in 2006 with Ivory Coast outfit Issia Wazi. Having failed a trial at Liverpool a year later, the target man made his way to Czech club Sparta Prague, where he racked up 22 goals and five assists in 59 league matches, in addition to scoring 11 times in 20 European matches.

The Ivorian was on his travels midway through the 2010/11 season after being snapped up by Vitesse Arnhem. Bony netted just three times in seven appearances over the first few months but, after establishing himself as a first-team regular the following year, he bagged 17 goals and eight assists from 32 league and play-off matches and followed that up with an eye-catching 31 goals and eight assists from 30 league matches in 2012/13.

Bony’s exploits in the Eredivisie persuaded Swansea to shell out a club record £12m fee for his services in July 2013 and he wasted little time in settling at the Liberty. The Ivorian bagged 26 goals across all competitions for the Welsh club last year, producing 17 goals and four assists in the Premier League, before going on to deliver nine strikes and a pair of assists in 20 top-flight appearances this time around. On the international stage, the 26-year-old has also appeared 32 times for the Ivory Coast and found the net on 11 occasions.

The Prospects

As we’ve seen so often in the past, a move to the Etihad can sound the death knell for many a player’s Fantasy fortunes and in spite of his goal-getting abilities, the jury is out on whether Bony’s career at City will prove worthy of our consideration.

At Swansea, he was the first-choice forward in a lone striker system, providing the power, movement and guile to lead the line with devastating effect – no other player matched Bony’s 20 goals over the 2014 calendar year. In all likelihood, City’s embarrassment of riches up front should allow Pellegrini to roll out his preferred 4-2-2-2 on a regular basis but with Sergio Aguero an automatic pick, Bony is set to battle it out with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for pitch time alongside the Argentine.

With a starting role looking far from certain, the Ivorian’s prospects are also dented by a likely lack of spot-kicks. Five of Bony’s league goals for the Swans were converted penalties but, again, you’d expect Aguero to remain at the top of the pecking order, whilst Yaya Toure could hold onto his role as back-up option, leaving his compatriot out of the running.

What may fall in Bony’s favour, though, is his ability to steer clear of injury. On too many occasions over the past couple of years, City have had at least one forward sidelined through one problem or the other – with all three unavailable last month, Pellegrini was forced into adopting a false nine system to cope. Given that Jovetic and Dzeko have managed just over 1,300 minutes between them, there’s hope that Bony could benefit if he can steer clear of the treatment room – City have produced the highest number of attempts on goal this season and, when on the pitch, there’s no doubt he’ll be supplied with chances aplenty.

With doubts over his minutes, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” with this one. Depending on his nation’s progress in the Africa Cup of Nations, Bony may not be back on domestic duties until Gameweek 26, allowing us to build our Wildcard squads and assess the Etihad situation at a later date. Providing Aguero can keep fit, though, it’s difficult to see how the new boy will surpass the Argentine as our favoured City striker of choice in spite of a far more budget-friendly price tag.

From a Swansea perspective, Bony’s move currently puts the 6.5-priced Bafetimbi Gomis in the driving seat as the lone striker. With one goal to his name, though, the Frenchman has failed to replicate his predecessor’s clinical strike rate, whilst his weekend television interview – hinting at broken promises from the Swans hierarchy – hardly suggests all is well. It may well be that Garry Monk turns to loan signing Nelson Oliveira to solve his dilemma up top, then, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson owners will be hoping the Icelandic international can take over spot-kick duties as a result of the Ivorian’s departure.

So now the world has gotten to the stage where there is universal uproar over some interviewer asking a female tennis player to do a twirl (which she obliged and started laughing as soon as she did it) after winning some competition.

That's the problem right there nowadays, people are too soft and take offense to everything. Get over it, dryballs.

I think the issue is that no one would ask Roger Federer to *do a twirl* after he won a match...

So, logically why would we ask a woman tennis player to do this?

Bloody embarrassing & horribly unprofessional of the journalist.

Everything is magnified now with social media, and people egg each other on, until little incidents become self-perpetuating hate machines.

That said, I don't know why the commentator asked her to do a twirl, very odd, you wouldn't tell a male tennis player to do that would you. I can see why they're being criticised.

10 years ago there would be a few eyebrows raised and it would all be forgotten, but nowadays people can tweet instantly, gauge reaction, find other people who agree with them and momentum is built. That interviewer will probably be sacked.

What would you do with this team?
    2.3m ITB - 1FT

    Foster, Pant
    Bert, Terry, Hutton PvA, Wisdom
    Haz, Alexis, Fab, Chadli, Boyd
    Aguero, Kane, Austin

Willing to do a -4 because its a pretty piss poor team.

    Foster, Myhill
    Ivanovic, Clyne, PVA, Baird, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, ADM, Downing, Puncheon
    Aguero, Costa, Kane

Punch to rotate with downing until his fixtures improve.

Morning All. Massively bored at work/with the gap in the Game Weeks.
My team seems just a bit stale at the moment. Still doing ok around top 2k but feel it needs shaking up.

    Foster/Myhill
    Terry/Hutton/Trippier/Waslik/PVA
    Hazard/ADM/Sanchez/Siggy/Boyd
    Costa/Aguero/Kane
1FT 0.1 ITB WC played already

-Trippier (ill advised punt for his ‘good’ fixtures) to Bellerin. Still not 100% Chambers wont take the spot
-Hold for a bit and Trippier to Alderwield when back
    -Happy to lose Siggy
-Would love Giroud instead of Kane somehow
-Hutton is annoying me, annoyingly Im 0.1 of Hutton to Bellerin
    - Happy to lose Boyd down to 4.2 and take the extra 0.1’s

Any thoughts to shake this up welcome, not seeing any exciting moves

Gotta save this week for me. Reassess after the GW and see where to make a double switch. Downgrading Boyd and using that cash to upgrade one of your defenders for free makes sense to me. Or figuring out what to do with Siggy even. He doesn't seem like a great pick to me right now given Swansea's problems. No single transfer is screaming out to me that would really improve your hopes for the upcoming GW though so I would save it.

Siggy would be the player I'd transfer out next and try and find the next mid priced bandwagon.. I have Chadli in that spot and think I might have a punt on Walters. With that move you'd be able to upgrade the defence.

        Downing
        Siggy
        Chadli
        Puncheon
        Walters

The Costa debate has been done ad infinitum. But there is a reason for that, he's a very interesting character when it comes to FPL and in RL too.. I'm firmly in the Costa camp, even captained him last GW 😎

The next few GWs will be so interesting. Loads on here going without him on WCs and I can definitely see the reason why. Lots of good arguments against having him, I'm not daft enough to see that.. I think Jonty instigated the whole Costa OUT movement a couple of months ago and it really caught fire.

I'm sticking with him for now and will continue to captain him ahead of Hazard, like I did last week. I think the braces and the baps will increase as we proceed.

In my book, he's the number 1 most interesting FPL player this season, regardless if you have him or not. ( a bit like Yaya last year) Night all 🙂

I have been without for months after starting the season with him but am still not sold on getting him back. I think this site has reacted pretty intensely to the combination of the two events, Aguero blanking at home and Costa getting a haul while Hazard blanks.

If Aguero or Hazard had done anything, then Costa's stock would not have risen so much imo, much like the overreaction in the other direction to Costa steady but unspectacular last two months.

I'd take a punt and get Bellerin in for Hutton. Enough stability in the back line surrounding him that it wouldn't hurt much if it fails. Can't imagine you ever playing Hutton anyway. Or...you can go the alternate route and do Hutton to Baird and upgrade your fifth mid to a JWP type.

it will be close and think SOT may edge it.
But value/price comes into it too. If Baird at 3.9 ends up with say 30 less points than Clyne from now til the end of the season then Baird has to be considered.

    Silly little WC question:

    A) Panti, Krul, Baird, Boyd
    B) Foster, Myhill, Wollscheid, Lucas

Not silly..that is a really good one. Very, very close. I think it depends much on your preference on rotating keepers and how your defenses rotate / depend upon either Baird or Wollscheid.

      Currently have
      Heaton/Guzan
      O'Shea/Dummett/S.Taylor/N.Taylor/Wisdom
      Sanchez/Silva/Oscar/Hazard/Puncheon
      Costa/Austin/Aguero

with FTs done for the week.
      Play WC or hold?

Care for a RMWCT to pass the time?

      Panti - 4 mil
      Terry - Fonte - Jones - Bellerin - Baird
Sanchez- Hazard - Fabregas - Cazorla - Puncheon
      Aguero - Austin - Kane

Still debating about the 3rd striker/5th midfielder, but as it currently stands, Austin/Kane/puncheon will be rotated.

      What do you reckon DZ?

Only thing I don't like in there is Jones. Too many funds tied up in him for me when you have Fonte and Terry who are pretty much start every week type of defenders. Besides that nothing really to complain about!

Thanks Walsh! I'm attracted by Utd's fixtures I suppose. Also, If I were to downgrade, to say PvA, I'm not sure where I'd want to use the funds.

Yeah it's tricky then I see what you mean. You could go for a rotating keeper for Panti or upgrade Cazorla even further to a more premium mid though I don't really know who would fit.

As a first-time Panti owner I've been advised that his best points come away from home anyway, so I'm hesitant on a rotating keeper, though that's probably what I would do.

I don't mind cazorla as a relatively short-term punt. Though I see your considering Ramsey which looks like a very interesting differential!

Yeah I understand your apprehension with rotating Panti especially with his save points always seeming to come in. Santi's stats are wonderful and I can see the appeal behind him...but if you follow me with Ramsey don't be mad when it goes pear shaped 😀

Thanks for your thoughts TM! I think Caz is my main differential at the moment, and I'm not really tempted by any mid-priced strikers. Still got bad memories of Giroud (C) -4 😛

Was thinking higher up how for many of us the 4th midfield pick has now become an official 'thing'.
Those without both Costa and Aguero can easily fit in an Erikeson/Carzola/Oscar

With Costa and Aguero up top i guess we are looking at-
      Downing
      Siggy
      Chadli
      Puncheon
      Walters
      Johnson
      Larsson

All have relative merits and downsides. Have i missed any? Who are you boys going for? None of these massively scream pints to me.

what does everyone think of a team without Costa or Kun with a value of 2.7m ?

      thinking i double up:
      terry + ivan
      sanchez + Cazorla

      current:

      Fabiansk , Pantilimon
      Dawson , Terry , Dann , Evans , Bertrand
      Sánchez , Chadli , Sigurdsson , Jedinak , Silva
      Costa , Giroud , Austin

443 very interesting indeed Jim. I like it, but would maybe punt on a higher upside 4th midfielder than Larsson in that team. Maybe Moses or Puncheon in his stead. I kinda like it though. Do United and Newcastle rotate well at the keeper position?

you are going to be killed by captains. Sanchez, Hazard and Kun are all explosive beasts.

Re. Bony. Am i the only one that sees him as a top top player and good enough to be a huge success at city?

I could see at Arsenal or Liverpool. I don't think he will be so effective with Kun there.

No 🙂 If Pelle starts running out the 442 like he did last year when Dzeko was a marginally acceptable pick in that spot alongside Kun when Bony is 10x the player he is he should be a great FPL pick. Just a problem fitting him in that three man front line.

Exactly. Clearly the 4-4-2/4-2-4 is his favourite and he's been trying to find the perfect partner for kun. Negredo scored heaps there. Dzeko has at times too. Imagine the vision and flair of silva and nasri, the power brutal effectiveness of yaya and bony and the jewel in the crown, the kun!

I always said last year that I thought Negredo was the perfect strike partner to Kun in the 442. City don't really do bad moves...and I have a feeling Bony will be massive for them. A Kun Costa Bony frontline is expensive though 🙁

A 442 could be quite interesting in the future for City. For those opting to go sans Aguero, this could be the perfect City option to "cover" (if you may) his points with. Albeit, it is harder to cover Aguero's points than it is with a Costa.

In any case, a striker double-up could be quite interesting.

I'm not convinced he'll succeed at City. The key to his play at Swansea was being the lone man. He excelled playing alone up top, and almost all chances were fed through to him. I don't see that being the case at City, particularly given Aguero is the main man, and I think it will take him some time to get used to City's intricate passing style whilst trying to break team's down.

He could come good, but I'm not completely convinced.

The thing is with Bony that I think gets overlooked is when he gets the ball at his feet in the penalty area he is just deadly. His first touch and skills in those close quarters are phenomenal and the more opportunities he has per game to have that occur the better off he will be. Swansea are such a rubbish attacking side the idea of play having to flow through him for him to get points is inevitable as they don't have any other attacking plays but he should get far more opportunities with the ball at his feet in the box with City. I think he will do quite well.

He also strikes me as a perfect compliment to Aguero. He is wonderful at holding the ball up...is physically strong....and makes terrific movements without the ball. I think it could be a special partnership in the second half.

I mean a 442 with Yaya Dinho Nasri Silva Bony Aguero. That is silly talk. So many goals.

      Current team:

      Foster Myhill
      Terry Gardos Wisdom PVA Keane
      Hazard Fabregas Sanchez ADM Boyd
      Aguero Giroud Kane

      1FT 0.2 ITB

Went without Costa for my wildcard a couple of weeks ago and been cursing ever since.
Was planning to save this week, then do Giroud -> Costa and Fabregas -> Puncheon (maybe?) next week with my 2FTs but now thinking I might stick with my Costa-less lot and do Keane -> Bellerin this week followed by Gardos -> Alderweireld (assuming he's fit again)

      What say you?

Don't knee jerk out of the Haz Fab duo just because of one week. There is a cogent argument for going that route over Costa. Make sure you are committed to making that shift before you actually do it. Giroud is a very viable forward option in his own right.

Thanks, yeah my knee has been jerking like mad, leaning towards sticking with Fab/Haz now.
