Swansea manager Garry Monk continued to strengthen his first-team squad last Thursday with the acquisition of defender Kyle Naughton from Tottenham on a three-and-a-half-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £5m. The 26-year-old is the third new face to arrive at the Liberty during the winter transfer window, following forward Nelson Oliveira and young playmaker Matt Grimes to the club.

Discussing his move with the local press, Naughton cited a lack of guaranteed pitch time as the main reason behind his decision to depart White Hart Lane, with the versatile full-back now looking to cement his place in Swansea’s first-team:

“My main aim is to start playing regular football again. I know it’s going to be a tough challenge because there are some very good players here, but that’s my goal. I actually played 34 games last season for Spurs, which is a fair amount. The main problem for me, however, was that I was still in and out of the team. That’s difficult at times. But now I just want to settle into life at Swansea and try to play regularly. It all comes down to playing football — after all, that’s my job.”

The History

A product of the Sheffield United youth academy, Naughton’s career kicked off on loan at Scottish side Gretna in January 2008, where he made 18 appearances before returning to his parent club. The full-back made his debut for the Blades the following season and was quick to catch the eye. After producing three goals and a trio of assists in 50 matches, he was named in the Championship Team of the Year and was snapped up by Spurs in a £9m deal along with fellow defender Kyle Walker.

Over his six years at White Hart Lane, it’s fair to saw that Naughton failed to convince under a series of managers. Loan spells at Middlesbrough (15 appearances), Leicester (34 appearances, five goals, three assists) and Norwich (32 appearances) ensued, with Naughton mustering just six assists in 75 outings for the north London club. With Walker sidelined for the first few months of the season, Naughton was still unable to nail down a starting role under new boss Mauricio Pochettino and turned out just five times in the league. On the international stage, the 26-year-old turned out nine times for the England Under 21 side between 2008-10.

The Prospects

With cash to splash as a result of Wilfried Bony’s move to City, Monk has been quick to target the full-back areas. Naughton’s arrival comes at a time where the Welsh club have also been linked with Norwich’s Martin Olsson, as Crystal Palace attempt to wrestle current left-back Neil Taylor from the Liberty.

After confirming the deal, the Swans boss was quick to lay down the challenge to his new defender and suggested Naughton has the opportunity to improve his patchy pitch time:

“I know he enjoyed his time at Tottenham, but he didn’t play quite as regularly as he would have wanted. Hopefully he can now stake a claim for a place in our starting XI. He adds quality to what we already have. I think he can help us improve as a team and he can improve as a player as well. I always want to recruit young, hungry players with a point to prove and Kyle is one of them. He comes here with good pedigree and he is experienced at the top level. I think the fact that we have got him is another sign of how far we have come.”

So far, Monk has mainly fielded Angel Rangel at right-back in his first full season at the helm. The Spaniard has started 17 of the opening 22 Gameweeks but a closer look at recent team sheets suggest he may be falling out of favour – he’s been named in the first XI in only three of the last six, with Monk turning to both Ashley Richards and Dwight Tiendalli as alternatives.

With his manager seemingly unconvinced over the other three right-backs (Richards has now been farmed out on loan to Fulham), Naughton certainly has the chance to become a regular in the Swansea starting line-up. Available for just 4.3 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he would offer the cheapest route into a defence that’s served up eight clean sheets over the campaign. Only Chelsea and Southampton have managed to keep out their opponents more often than Swansea so far, though it’s worth noting that all of their shut-outs have arrived against sides that currently sit in the bottom half of the table.

As speculation grows over Taylor’s future, Ashley Williams – at 5.3 – remains the most popular option, but with Wildcards in play, Naughton could come into contention as a viable cut-price option ahead of showdowns with Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley in the next five. Looking at our season fixture ticker, pairing him with Sunderland’s 4.2-priced Patrick van Aanholt and alternating according to ease of fixture over the next 11 Gameweeks (BUR, SUN, QPR, WBA, bur, hul, AVL, avl, HUL, CPL, lei) looks very favourable, whilst a home/away rotation with Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid (4.5) could also hold appeal in light of the Potters’ three clean sheets in the last five.

I think Chadli and Kane is too much spuds. theyre just too inconsistant Puncheon could be a good option for him, as others have said, we will see more when the lads come back from their tournaments

    Morning all

I'm looking for a heat map of Brighton vs Arsenal in the Cup yesterday. Does any kind person know where I might find such a thing?

    Thank you.

Kemp Town and West Street and the Sea front according to taste are generally the hot spots, Though good pubs, clubs and restaurants are then spread throughout the town centre.
Nothing is too far. Cold spots are on a different map.

There are way too many decent Arsenal options now. I'm worried about Cazorla's playing time. He'll surely play this weekend but after that who knows...

Ignore player reputation and play the players doing well. For example, having the balls to play Coquelin over Ozil if it brings defensive stability.

I'm not sure what I'd do. I've watched footy for decades but have seldom seen so many quality options in midfield for one manager...if ever...I think it's a total guess as to what happens at Arsenal with a fully fit squad...

rotate. he has a good squad and amazing midfield. he can't play them all every week. play the players in form and give players plenty of rest. having people competing should make them play better.

if someone is in form, like Santi is right now, keep playing him until he needs a rest or gets injured or has a purple patch.....

I just don't understand the transfer policy very well, when all their middfielders are fit, they have the best middfield in the league imo, but really their best striker is Giroud. I sometimes cry when I see him play, buy a decent striker Wenger!

He get's a bad press but he doesn't deserve it. Giroud is great at holding the ball up and laying it off for those mids...absolutely brill at it...He will never be a true striker but I don't think he needs to be...

giroud is actually pretty good. people seem to have a problem with him but he scores goals.

46 goals in 111 apps for Arsenal. that's pretty decent.

also they now have Sanchez, who can play as a striker. as can Wally (though that is not his best position obv).

Now I need to replace Siggy, I plan on bringing in a 1 week punt until next weeks WC. I am looking at sunderland. I have 7.1 to spend. I reckon one of Larsson or AJ could end up in the points either with set pieces or supplying Defoe.

dont fancy Downing and I have Kane already so no love for chadli either.

Anybody argue a case for either of these sunderland players or provide an alternative sub 7.1 option?

Chadli. Kane being in your fantasy team will do nothing to stop him from scoring - in fact, they might well both get points when Spurs score - in the last six matches, Chadli has assisted Kane four times, and Kane's assisted Chadli once.

true that but I just dont trust spurs to perform when they should. I hate trusting my FF team to them.
Eriksen and Kane have already let me down this year. Home to sunderland, home to Palace. i prefer to spread the risk a bit more. Away to west brom is no goood either as I have 2 WBA defs so Im only shooting myself in the foot if I have 2 spurs and 2 west brom

      Bellerin is favoured over Chambers.

Chambers has been pretty poor in that RB spot. Bellerin has impressed but in no way is he nailed on.

I would say he is as nailed as Baird and Ospina. worth a shout but make sure you have a good 4th/5th defender to come in

Is Puncheon a decent enough 4th mid going forward (all funds tied up elsewhere) or should I keep Downing and sacrifice my 5th from JWP > (£4.3)?

I'm looking at keeping Downing and getting AJ as 5th.mid. Rotating the two gives BUR, MUN, QPR, WBA,CPL, hul, AVL, SUN - which is pretty good.

I got Downing for 5.7m and I'm loathe to sell given his consistency and decent fixtures from gw 30 or so. I can't say I'm a fan of AJ at all - he's talented but way too inconsistent. On the other hand he does have a tendency to hit purple patches of extremely good performances and has the ability to get goals, assists and baps, the holy trinity. Sunderland are in familiar territory, struggling at the bottom, but have enough experience in relegation battles to dig themselves out. AJ should be one of the key men in the next few weeks.

All very true and it is a decent plan. I got Downing at £6 so sell for £6.3 and still think he will score goals over the tough run. However I think Punch will too and rise in price.
Having Downing and AJ is a lot of cash tied up though and no doubt points will be left on the bench.

These Carling cup semis are huge. Wouldn't want any Spurs players and may be a max of 2 chelsea players if Che and Spurs go through. No way can I afford 3 non-playing given how I consistently end up with 2-3 injured/suspended players every week.

I don't think going with two budget mids in the 3rd and 4th spots is a good long term move. There are also a plethora of cheaper striker options to fit in at the third striker spot. Sturridge also hasn't been fit since summer time so I think it is a bit crazy to be considering him right now.

It really just depends how much you want Aguero I think. If you are fine with waiting another week then don't bother with the WC. I'd probably make two defensive transfers and get rid of Cresswell and Hutton for two guys with better clean sheet chances for the weekend and bench Terry. This is assuming you are interested in keeping Terry on your WC. I think your midfield looks fine and most points potential is in the defensive changes as I can't see anyone from your current defense besides Forster and Clyne keeping a clean sheet this weekend.

No, no, no. You can only captain one of them each week and it will weaken your team too much in other areas. Instead of Studge why not get Raheem - cheaper and will shirley benefit from having a proper forward to play behind?

Yes, I think so. The Liverpool mids, Sterling, Coutinho and so on have great movement but they need a mobile striker like Studge to open spaces up for them to run into. Ballotelli wanders about and just doesn't do anything really.

    Right, I think I'm done.

    Foster Myhill
    Terry Bertrand Wisdom Hutton PeeVeeAy
    Downing Hazard AJ Wally Sanchez
    Costa Kane Aguero

I think I prefer Charlie Austin to Kane ( DAD is lurking ) but that means no Wally or a cheapy fifth mid like Boyd. It's very frustrating as there are very few players I actually want and so many are severely underwhelming.

Hmmm. Aspic over JT would allow me to keep Charlie over Underbite...I actually bought Aspi last autumn and then he got sent off in the very first game I had him for. That's an absolute no-no and his name immediately went in the Big Black Book Of Players I'll Never Buy Again, alongside the likes of Zigic and Evans. One to ponder....

Well I don't want you to go against a cardinal rule. May I suggest a look at Koscielny and forgo Chelsea defense altogether? Arsenal have very tasty home fixtures for the rest of the season and I'd personally prefer Kos over Azpil ever so slightly as I think Azpil will be rotated to some degree in the League given their fixture pile up and Filipe Luis' able ability.

Yes, I was going to do Zabaleta > Kos for my free transfer this week but I think I might WC instead, hence the sudden flurry of activity! It's just that not having a Chelsea defender when most in the top 10k have one makes me feel nervous....

That's what I am feeling. Especially with JWP as my fifth mid...however the one nagging thing that I'm worried about is that it is very likely Walcott will get a sub appearance in games he does not start. I had penciled him into my January WC draft a few weeks ago when I was looking at the team I'd like and he is one of my favorite players. I think I may just take the plunge in the face of reason.

Didn't think his performance level dipped all that much, just that there were other in form midfielders in the league along with Liverpool playing badly that made him seem average. Do we suddenly think his finishing has improved because of the goal against Chelsea? He also had those great chances against United but I don't know what's changed since then.

Not for me. Big points in a few games early and nothing since. Has potential for assists looking at his RM days, but just doesn't seem like a big enough goal threat from his previous seasons to justify his price tag. Also, Man Utd are not exactly firing on all cylinders currently.

Hopefully Wenger gives clues that Walcott might start next game.
Also, if Sturridge gets minutes against Chelsea he'll be an option for the West Ham game.

Many of the big hitters are slowly coming back...

Some decent undercover punts on the wildcard such as: Sanogo, Sakho, Schlupp, Henderson, Moses, etc.

There is a lot of Cazorla love around here. With Ozil, Ramsey and Walcott back, Wilshere coming back mid-Feb I just don't see him as a long-term option in the CAM role. He's an amazing player and in his first season and the last few weeks has been great FPL-wise but there's too much rotation risk there for my liking with less upside than Sanchez or Walcott. (I'll admit I'm biased. I'm trying to justify Sanchez and Walcott in my WC next week)

At least Sanchez is a given! The fact Walcott and Ozil just came back and Cazorla was rested makes me think he's safe for the Villa game but after that it's open! Might do a one week punt with him transfers him out for Sterling/Oscar.

That sounds like a plan really. He'll more than likely start at Villa but Ozil can't stay out of the starting XI for very long which leaves Cazorla playing wide or Ramsey missing out...

Feels like Sanchez and Giroud are the most nailed on attacking options for Arsenal

Given up on wildcard for this week. Need a 1 week clean sheet or a goalscorer punt

    Cresswell Naylor Terry Clyne Dummett

    Silva Sterling Sanchez Hazard Downing

    Ings Costa Austin

    .3 itb

    I'm thinking

    A) Dummett > Bellerin
    B) Sterling > Cazorla
    C) Ings > Kane
    D) Other

A appeals to me because it might be the safest clean sheet you can picture, assuming he starts.
