Tomas Rosicky steers Arsenal to a narrow win at Brighton with a goal and assist at the Amex. Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil grab a goal apiece as Arsene Wenger rings the changes. Carles Gil fires Villa into the fifth round with a stunning strike at home to Bournemouth, whilst Diafra Sakho recovers from a back injury to help the Hammers down Bristol City.

Gunners Midfielders in the Goals

The holders advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over Championship strugglers Brighton yesterday. Arsene Wenger made seven changes to the side which stunned the champions at the Etihad last Sunday – amongst top-flight sides, only Chelsea and Tottenham, with nine apiece, made more alterations from their last competitive match but unlike their London rivals, the Gunners were able to avoid a cup humbling.

Wenger switched from a 4-1-4-1 to a more expansive 4-2-3-1 set-up and fielded Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil on the flanks, with Aaron Ramsey partnered by Mathieu Flamini in the double-pivot and Tomas Rosicky fielded in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud. Walcott, Ozil and Rosicky all bagged a goal apiece, with the latter also earning an assist in a man-of-the-match performance against the Seagulls to heighten the number of options currently available to Wenger in the final third of the pitch.

The Arsenal boss handed Alexis Sanchez 20 minutes off the bench as the Chilean replaced the tiring Walcott late on, whilst Ozil was also withdrawn towards the end of the second period after months on the sidelines through injury. It seems likely that both will continue to be eased back into league action, though there’s no doubt that yesterday’s display hands Wenger a real selection headache in the centre of the park which may well persuade some Sanchez owners to invest in Olivier Giroud up top, rather than double up in midfield.

At the back, David Ospina and Hector Bellerin’s stock was arguably boosted by their absence ahead of three home clashes (AVL, LEI, EVE) and a trip to Palace in the next five. After helping their side earn back-to-back league shut-outs, the sub-5.0 pair made way for Wojciech Szczesny and Calum Chambers in goal and at right-back respectively but Arsenal’s defensive frailties returned once again as Brighton notched twice in a five-goal thriller.

Sakho the Hammers’ Hero

A late header from Senegalese striker Diafra Sakho ensured West Ham United advanced to the last 16 of the FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over League One outfit Bristol City at Ashton Gate. With West Ham going well in the league, Sam Allardyce had vowed before Sunday’s clash to take the cup competition seriously and was as good as his word in terms of team selection. The Hammers boss made just one change from the starting line-up which defeated Hull City in their last outing, with Winston Reid replacing James Collins in defence.

Allardyce was left thankful for the impact of his substitutes, Morgan Amalfitano and fit-again goalscorer Sakho, whose recovery from a back injury has, fortuitously for Allardyce, arrived too late for him to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. Sakho’s display off the bench suggests he could now be set to oust Enner Valencia from the starting XI if his manager continues with a midfield diamond set-up and, now down to a mere 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he may tempt some on the lookout for a budget option up top. With a tough run of fixtures to follow (liv, MUN, sou, tot, CRY, CHE, ars), though, our enthusiasm in West Ham’s assets is somewhat tempered.

New boy Gil Steers Villa Through

Paul Lambert’s notoriously goal-shy side managed to score more than once in a match for the first time in nearly two months with a 2-1 victory over Championship leaders Bournemouth. The Midlands side  sporting six changes from their home defeat to Liverpool the previous weekend  were helped on their way to the next round with a stunning strike from new playmaker Carles Gil, who is already looking like a shrewd January signing.

Fantasy managers eyeing up the crafty Spaniard should bear in mind that Villa’s next two fixtures – against Arsenal and Chelsea – may not present too many opportunities for the ex-Valencia man to thrive in his new surroundings. Subsequent fixtures thereafter, though (hul, STO, new, WBA, sun, SWA), may just provide the platform for Gil  at 5.0 in FPL  to re-ignite Villa’s season and bring himself onto our radars as a viable fifth midfielder, with Lambert hoping the new boy’s impact can also reignite Christian Benteke’s faltering performances up top.

Could be a little rotation when CL and cup games stack up but i think he's the number 1. Welbeck had his chance to lock that down and didn't convince as a goal scorer

I agree, hence why i wouldn't say Giroud is safe. Giroud is the better player and is better with link up play but I don't think Welbeck will be glued to the bench

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Which Arsenal trio to go for?

Or is it worth tripling up? Personally when a team has good form and fixtures I like to triple up. Its worked for me this season with Southampton and Chelsea and I think it will for Arsenal too.

For me I've got Koscielny and Sanchez already. Most will have Sanchez - but which defender is best to get from gunners ranks, if at all?

And who should be the third player? Giroud? Cazorla and his penalties? Or is now the time to take a punt on Walcott and Ozil - who both scored against the mighty Brighton at the weekend.

Tripling up on teams with good form and fixtures is not for everyone, but it's done me well this season and others. I had triple Liverpool for large chunks of last season for example.

I have no issues tripling up in the right circumstances. I will almost certainly have 3 chelsea on wc next week? I don't see arsenal as being anywhere near as appealing, however.

Other than sanchez, noone knows what the first choice mf will be and how much this will rotate. Defence is not solid enough for their premium options, so you left punting bellarin or ospina hold their place

Giroud, ok maybe if you not going down the costa road

3 is not justified imo, and also leaves you exposed if a great option does emerge as you need to sell to buy

There are only three rules I stick to when playing FPL.

Never pick, let alone captain, a Spurs player at home after a Europa league match.
Never think a DM who suddenly bangs in a couple of goals is a train worth getting on.
Never triple up on Arsenal. No team is more capable of utterly letting you down on any given week.

Surely Mert being about half a foot taller, so a big threat in both boxes, and less injury prone is the better pick?

    Ok guys,
Sorry posted a lot, but on wc and going away with missus tomorrow and she will go mad seeing me on fpl!! I know fpl is more important! ha
I need to get rid of one and keep changing. on my wc now.

    A) Austin- had since near the start so got money tied up in him, also does everything for qpr.

    B) kane- got him at 5 mill and has served me very well, but some talk of people getting rid.

    C) costa- again had him since the start, has annoyed me a lot and was going to be shipped out to double on chels midfield, but his recent form has probably saved him.

Want to bring aguero in. thinking pelle or giroud one week punts and then aguero in.

Of the three I'd dump Austin. The reasoning is that Kane is just too good on value and Costa you will probably want back if you dump him costing you 0.4 or 0.5. Austin is the one you are least likely to want back as QPRs home fixtures look less good from now on.

The other option is to be more radical and keep all three. Building a team without Aguero lets you have a super midfield including Silva. People say he'll get less points with Aguero back in the team but based on previous seasons he should average around 6 pts per game even with Aguero playing.

talk to any arsenal fan/have a look at their forum.. Bellerin the only natural RB at present iwth Debuchy injured and Jenkinson on loan. Chambers is just CB backup

Chambers played a whole season for Southampton at RB. Wenger may think of him as a CB long term but he can obviously play RB too.

Personally I think there will be rotation between the two. Both are 20 and Wenger won't want to overplay either. Which makes them both non-options for me.

History is one thing and he's current situation is another.. he has been poor at RB whereas Bellerin has looked great, has more speed and looks a much better fit. Anyway, in a couple of weeks we'll know for sure 🙂

"He has been poor in RB"? that is harsh are you an Arsenal supporter and have watched games or is this just a guess that he has been bad at RB. I've seen a good few Arsenal games this year and he is far from poor.

Gooner, here. It's not that he's poor, exactly, it's just that he is given to these frightening lapses that sometimes lead to goals. Would prefer to see Bellerin start every game.

but for the moment, Bellerin will start league games over Chambers. Chambers will get game time in the FA cup. Rotation in the league may be an issue once the champions league resumes though

Chambers could easily start the GW 25 game against Leicester which comes only 3 days after the GW24 Spurs game.

I agree that Bellerin is probably slightly in front at the moment. But I think Wenger is more likely to rotate the position. CL fixtures also come into the equation from GW 26 onwards. I don't see either as wildcard options.

You may be right, but that's when having a good back up defender could help the situation. I think owning an Arsenal defender will pay off

Looks quality and at 22 can only improve. He loves David Silva and by the looks of it tries to play like him with one-two passing and looking for that killer ball and if he can pull off goals out of nothing like that yesterday then happy days. For 5.0 he is worth throwing in but not till after the ARS/CHE games.

Personally I'm staying away from any Arsenal midfielders except for Sanchez, way too risky at the moment. Cazorla's place is in danger with the return of Özil, and Walcott/Ox will be rotated throughout the rest of the season.

Surely Giroud or Sanchez are the only safe offensive options?
