Tomas Rosicky steers Arsenal to a narrow win at Brighton with a goal and assist at the Amex. Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil grab a goal apiece as Arsene Wenger rings the changes. Carles Gil fires Villa into the fifth round with a stunning strike at home to Bournemouth, whilst Diafra Sakho recovers from a back injury to help the Hammers down Bristol City.

Gunners Midfielders in the Goals

The holders advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over Championship strugglers Brighton yesterday. Arsene Wenger made seven changes to the side which stunned the champions at the Etihad last Sunday – amongst top-flight sides, only Chelsea and Tottenham, with nine apiece, made more alterations from their last competitive match but unlike their London rivals, the Gunners were able to avoid a cup humbling.

Wenger switched from a 4-1-4-1 to a more expansive 4-2-3-1 set-up and fielded Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil on the flanks, with Aaron Ramsey partnered by Mathieu Flamini in the double-pivot and Tomas Rosicky fielded in “the hole†behind Olivier Giroud. Walcott, Ozil and Rosicky all bagged a goal apiece, with the latter also earning an assist in a man-of-the-match performance against the Seagulls to heighten the number of options currently available to Wenger in the final third of the pitch.

The Arsenal boss handed Alexis Sanchez 20 minutes off the bench as the Chilean replaced the tiring Walcott late on, whilst Ozil was also withdrawn towards the end of the second period after months on the sidelines through injury. It seems likely that both will continue to be eased back into league action, though there’s no doubt that yesterday’s display hands Wenger a real selection headache in the centre of the park which may well persuade some Sanchez owners to invest in Olivier Giroud up top, rather than double up in midfield.

At the back, David Ospina and Hector Bellerin’s stock was arguably boosted by their absence ahead of three home clashes (AVL, LEI, EVE) and a trip to Palace in the next five. After helping their side earn back-to-back league shut-outs, the sub-5.0 pair made way for Wojciech Szczesny and Calum Chambers in goal and at right-back respectively but Arsenal’s defensive frailties returned once again as Brighton notched twice in a five-goal thriller.

Sakho the Hammers’ Hero

A late header from Senegalese striker Diafra Sakho ensured West Ham United advanced to the last 16 of the FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over League One outfit Bristol City at Ashton Gate. With West Ham going well in the league, Sam Allardyce had vowed before Sunday’s clash to take the cup competition seriously and was as good as his word in terms of team selection. The Hammers boss made just one change from the starting line-up which defeated Hull City in their last outing, with Winston Reid replacing James Collins in defence.

Allardyce was left thankful for the impact of his substitutes, Morgan Amalfitano and fit-again goalscorer Sakho, whose recovery from a back injury has, fortuitously for Allardyce, arrived too late for him to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. Sakho’s display off the bench suggests he could now be set to oust Enner Valencia from the starting XI if his manager continues with a midfield diamond set-up and, now down to a mere 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he may tempt some on the lookout for a budget option up top. With a tough run of fixtures to follow (liv, MUN, sou, tot, CRY, CHE, ars), though, our enthusiasm in West Ham’s assets is somewhat tempered.

New boy Gil Steers Villa Through

Paul Lambert’s notoriously goal-shy side managed to score more than once in a match for the first time in nearly two months with a 2-1 victory over Championship leaders Bournemouth. The Midlands side – sporting six changes from their home defeat to Liverpool the previous weekend – were helped on their way to the next round with a stunning strike from new playmaker Carles Gil, who is already looking like a shrewd January signing.

Fantasy managers eyeing up the crafty Spaniard should bear in mind that Villa’s next two fixtures – against Arsenal and Chelsea – may not present too many opportunities for the ex-Valencia man to thrive in his new surroundings. Subsequent fixtures thereafter, though (hul, STO, new, WBA, sun, SWA), may just provide the platform for Gil – at 5.0 in FPL – to re-ignite Villa’s season and bring himself onto our radars as a viable fifth midfielder, with Lambert hoping the new boy’s impact can also reignite Christian Benteke’s faltering performances up top.

What are your weaknesses as a FPL manager?

I think mine are mainly to do with prejudice against certain clubs or players. For example I don't like Sturridge as a player at all having seen him play quite a bit at Chelsea. I think he's a physical coward who doesn't like heading the ball and won't be anywhere near as effective without Suarez. He's not a player I want to do well. So I can't imagine ever having Sturridge in my FPL team, apart from anything else I would hate looking at my team page.

I also tend to be dismissive of certain teams I think of as weak and too slow to accept reality when a team I like is not doing well. So for example I like Steve Bruce as a manager and it wouldn't take much for me to have a Hull defender in my wildcard (Chester would almost certainly have been in there had he not been injured). But I think of Burnley, Leicester and QPR as defensively weak and hardly even consider them as options despite the good returns Heaton and Green have had this season.

Some weaknesses I have learned to control. This is my first FPL season and at the start I had no idea how important captain selection was, for the first 8-10 weeks I was just playing hunches really. Now I think about it a lot more carefully and look at polls (as on this site). I don't let a poll select my captain for me but if I am planning to do something very different I will at least re-examine the rationality of my decision.

One weakness I don't have is to follow the herd. If anything I am too much the other way - if I see too many going in one direction my tendency will be to do something different.

I object to buying Silva, Hazard, Yaya, Rooney, RVP or any other high priced high scoring players out of principle.

Its oddly working in my favour this season, as its only Hazard I have bought exceedingly late as the others just havent performed.

Yeah, the lure of the price tag.

I would rather have Eriksen than Chadli in my team but is that really rational? The only merit is that Eriksen is probably more nailed on than Chadli. But most likely Chadli will score as many points and is 1.6 cheaper.

This is especially a problem that affects me with midfielders I find.

I think I'm also blindly dismissive of players in teams I perceive as 'weak.' It has caused me to miss out on bargains and loads of points. Take Stuart Downing for example. Sure, it's probably (likely) just ignorance and bias on my part, but I figured West Ham were an average side with no real FPL value there. I never even considered getting him in. And now it's too late.

RE - "One weakness I don't have is to follow the herd. If anything I am too much the other way - if I see too many going in one direction my tendency will be to do something different."

That can often be a weakness. When you get into the top 10K its important to look at ownership in this group. You need to look at high owned players that are likely to do well over a number of weeks and make sure you have them. You also need to look at high owned players where there is emerging evidence they will not do well and look to see what better differential prospects there are.

Following the herd is not a weakness. Ignoring the herd as one factor in your decision making will be. If too many go in the direction of a good player and you decide to do something different for the sake of it you will fall down the rankings.

Each season I try and highlight a weakness and make sure I correct it next season. Previous weaknesses have included not taking enough hits during double gameweeks - they really pay off.

I'm not sure about this year's weaknesses yet - I think captaincy risks is one area where I'm weak. I need to take such risks more often, especially when I already own other popular choices so the risk of falling back substantially is less.

I think I've made 2 blunders, which would be making 2 defensive transfers early in week 6 for fear of price rises, when I could have held the transfer and only done one, which would have avoided me taking a hit later in the week, and Dummett to Cresswell was a bit sideways perhaps, though ultimately came good.

You'd have to agree with me on general approach and understand my reasoning for some transfers.

I think it's a steep learning curve first season, even if most of the concepts you need are actually quite simple to grasp, it could be that you've already learnt about a lot of your mistakes.

This is really my first season, as previously I've registered and then just been a dead team from about week 2-3, last season was the only one I can remember playing, and even then I had stopped well before Christmas.

This year is the first I've started as members of community sites, rather than just setting up a team at the behest of my friends.

I love buying CAM's, even if there form is worst than other potential midfielders. Players like Silva, Ozil, Mata, Cazorla etc just somehow work their way into my side. I think it's partly how integral I feel the CAM is in a 4-2-3-1 that I think they will get all the points, even if it's probably not the case a lot of the times. The other part is how I love watching these kind of players beyond any other.

Ive always enjoyed having the the latest exciting player and this involves taking uneccesary hits, I've known for some time mainly from here that it is the wrong thing to do. This year I have stuck to a plan most of the time which is only take hits when I cant get a full side out as the players I originally put in are quality players and have as much chance of doing something.

Im having my best season by far and the only reason it isnt better is becuase I havent stuck to the plan all the time

Refusing to buy Terry ever, in 6 years, is a massive one.

Other than that it's really the last point you mention that is key here. We all have likes and dislikes which will always influence our decisions to a degree, but it's how you respond to bandwagons that can really make or break you. Downing and Siggy have been massive for me this year thanks to the site, but at the same time I have for no real reason I can fathom stuck to my week one decision not to pick Costa and just stick with Ivan & Hazard and it's cost me pretty much all season.

Especially when my solution was to pick Rooney instead.

I go into self-destruct mode if I have a really bad gameweek or two or if a bunch of players do well who I don't have I don't have the patience to bring them in gradually.

I went from 480k > 1k following all green arrows then decimated my team taking hits and I now sit in 50k

For me it is probably one the of the worst ones
Lack of patience with a player. I keep saying how with a lot of players you need to stick with them to get rewards, but 4-5 blanks in a row and I am desperate to get rid, despite having spent ages planning and analysing to get them in.
I always seem to have a poor December because of this.

Though each season can be different
For first few years I was like 20 year prisoner getting taken to a knocking shop, I would buy everything and anything I seen. Then I read the article by the winner a couple of years ago that said he would take a few weeks to get several players rather than taking hits, the following year I adopted that and it turned out the obvious hits were working out great week after week but I still stuck to my original plan

I'm beginning to wonder if it's picking a captain.... Seems to be going against me again and again this season, after pretty much leaving it on Suarez last time around and finishing at 6k.

Trying to find fullbacks whos stats are full of promise but play in the leakiest of defences, hence I currently find Trippier in my team and why Nicky Shorey found his way there a couple of years ago.

Always believing I can make an uber cheap defence work. I have been seeking treatment and now have Terry in my team (having tried to get by with Azpi for a few weeks). I always resent paying more than 5.0 for a DEF but I am happy to pay 12.5 for a striker. Madness.

And stubbornly believing players can't keep up their new found goal scoring, which meant I was very late to the Ramsey party last season and I never got around to Yaya.

    Foster-Myhil
    Clyne-Wisdom-Pva-Keane-___
    Hazard-Sanchez-Moses-Boyd-___
    Costa-Aguero-Giroud

    A)Caz and Terry
    B)ADM and Jones?

With B can change Keane to Bellerin also. Thinking B because already have Sanchez and Giroud.
A is harder to downgrade also if Caz starts being rotated. What you think?

What do will all think is the main issue with the template Atm, we all have seen the team with seems popular

    It's something like

    Foster myhill

Terry fonte(Southampton defender) pva wisdom/Baird bellerin

Hazard. Sanchez di Maria/cazorla/sterling puncheon/Elia/Downing boyd

    Aguero Costa kane

Personally I think the only really issues is di Maria being popular with his form, I know they have good fixtures but United arent scoring many, I think Jones is the United man to have. I also think cazorla is a rotation risk and bellerin even more so. Think Downing is a poor option for the next 7

      Begovic Foster

Terry Fonte Wisdom Van Aanholt Duff

      Sanchez Hazard *** *** Boyd

      Aguero Costa Kane

      A) Puncheon - Jedinak & Bolasie back soon - rotation risk?
      B) Barkley - hasn't really done much all season
      C) Henderson - consistent and steadily accumulates points/Sturridge back soon
      D) Mane - if Senegal are knocked out tomorrow, will he be back in time for Sunday's game
      E) Elia - place holder for Mane?
      F) Chadli - if Spurs and Chelsea win C1C games then this is a no go
      G) Johnson - is he fit? Tempting punt/rotation with Boyd with those upcoming fixtures

Wilshere, Sturridge, Aguero, they are injury prone players. Krul got injured and now he's injury prone. 9,000 minutes in the last 3 seasons would counter that.

Giroud the only prob for me - is a lot with Sanchez and Ospina too

I have Koscelny in my WC team, but Bellerin is sooooooooo tempting at 4.4

If he starts again and is good and they keep a CS then he's definitely worth it

Chelsea being linked with Cuadrado and Douglas Costa, two five-star skillers on FIFA 😉

Every time Iook for a downing replacement I realise he is the FPL player of the year so far and can't do it. His value is ahead of anyone and I got him at 5.7

maybe we are trying to be too smart ditching him because of the fixtures. already did it myself though. every chance he keeps on delivering

I'll hold him, at that price I don't see much upside in letting him go regardless of opponents

Think he's been offered an extension, where'd he go if he refused?
