We cast an analytical eye over last weekend’s fixtures this afternoon, evaluating the evolution of City’s fleet-footed No. 10, Liverpool’s defensive fortitude on their travels and the blank Gameweek headache.

The Player

David Silva’s brace in Manchester City’s 5-0 humbling of Newcastle city underlined his heightened goal threat this season. This is the first campaign in the Spanish playmaker’s Premier League career that he’s notched more goals (nine) than assists (seven); it’s also already his most profitable season in front of goal, eclipsing the seven strikes he accrued last term.

Among the highest scoring midfielders in the league this season, the former Valencia star’s nine-goal haul puts him on par with Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard, and three shy of Alexis Sanchez’s 12 – although, it’s worth noting that Silva has clocked at least 330 fewer minutes than each of these competitors.

In light of Yaya Toure’s return from the African Cup of Nations, many Fantasy managers would have earmarked the Ivorian as the premier route into the Champions midfield – a fair deduction given his streak of six goals in eight appearances before international duty beckoned. However, Toure’s inferior tally of goals (seven) and assists (one) in near-identical minutes to Silva, and weightier price tag (10.7 to 9.4) has thrown up an interesting contest between the pair.

Certainly, pinpointing coverage for Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been afforded greater importance by the absence of numerous high-ownership players next Gameweek. With Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank forcing many managers to bench their big-hitters and field less illustrious back-ups, it’s no surprise to see that Silva has been granted an upsurge in new owners – over 31,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already drafted him in since his 17-point haul against Newcastle, far more than any other player so far.

For now, Silva sits eighth among his midfield counterparts in the Fantasy ownership stakes, having been selected by 19% of managers but one look at the fixtures suggests that could be set to rise further. Although City’s next match-up – a trip to Anfield to face a resolute Liverpool defence – is potentially tricky, the following four fixtures (LEI, bur, WBA, cry) could see Silva wreak havoc as the champions chase down Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table.

The Team

After shipping 16 goals in their first eight away league matches, Liverpool have now recorded five clean sheets on the road for the first time in 30 years. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in ten and have accumulated 23 points out of a possible 27 in their previous nine fixtures as Brendan Rodgers’ side make a belated claim for a top four finish.

This feat is made all the more impressive when you consider that Rodgers has fielded the likes of Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe as wing-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation, balancing the conflicting requirements of width and defensive cover. Liverpool will do well to maintain their newfound defensive resilience as they embark on a run of fixtures (MCI, BUR, swa, MUN, ars) that includes three of the Premier League’s current top four, though with Martin Skrtel in imperious form and Emre Can’s addition proving crucial at the back, there seems little doubt they can prevail. Frustratingly, Rodgers’ decision to bench Alberto Moreno at St Mary’s has lessened his appeal, though, and with Can classified as a midfielder, Skrtel looks the safest option here.

The Reds have been impressive going forward, too, netting five in their last two outings, but Daniel Sturridge’s restoration as a viable high-cost forward will have to wait a little longer – the former Chelsea striker wasn’t named in the starting line-up, having featured in their midweek Europa League clash against Benfica.

With attacking returns in two of his last four league appearances, Philippe Coutinho (7.7) edges ever close to relevancy in the mid-priced midfielder bracket, though fellow weekend scorer Raheem Sterling (8.4) has served up returns in five of his last seven now and, as evidenced by their 2-0 win at St Mary’s, the Reds have the form at both ends of the pitch to trump any fixture right now.

The Talking Point

One look at the ownership levels in the FPL game highlights the issues caused by Gameweek 27 blanks for the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and QPR. Two of the top four defenders (Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry), three of the top six midfielders (Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Christian Eriksen) and three of the top five forwards (Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Charlie Austin) are all affected, handing Fantasy managers a real weekend headache.

Heading into a double Gameweek 28, Spurs’ involvement in crucial domestic and European cup ties leaves us with rotation doubts. Allied to this, the north Londoners face two relatively kind fixtures in their double, so you’d expect boss Mauricio Pochettino to possibly rest a select few during the league ties. Whilst Kane’s 12 goals in 11 outings makes him virtually undroppable, Pochettino’s decision to bench Eriksen against the Hammers yesterday clearly backfired and will surely persuade his manager to start with the Dane as the north London club attempt to get their bid for a top four finish back on track.

With regards to Chelsea coverage, few will want to cash in on the FPL’s leading defender (Ivanovic) or midfielder (Hazard), though Costa may be deemed dispensable as more look to the in-form Aguero as an alternative, with the Argentine finding his stride again.

With our benches set to be fully tested, our struggle to field 11 active players has been further compounded by the declining favour of budget defenders like Patrick van Aanholt and Andre Wisdom, with the latter still sitting third (20.3%) among defender ownership rankings. Balancing our squads and keeping points hits to a minimum looks a tricky task, then, and navigating the options to ensure we take advantage of the next two Gameweeks could well prove critical to many a mini-league success.

Not a lot wrong with that. PVA to someone, save the other one and bring in Eriksen and Rose or Austin next week?

Or even bring in Rose for PVA (who probably won't play anyway), play with 10 this week, then bring in Eriksen & Austin next week and have 4 DGWers for no hits.

I am thinking of doing Ivanovic ---> Bertrand this week. It allows me to just bench Baird instead of using 2 transfers to transfer him to someone (have no money ITB)

Do you think Berty can match Ivan's scores over the next few weeks? Surely he can't keep scoring goals, and Chelsea aren't looking great for cleanies.

Southampton, even with Wanyama+schneiderlin, looked poor defensively yesterday

      1. jernej93
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 6 days ago

1st goal was eurogoal from Coutinho who can't even score a goal from 5 meters on normal day

        and

2nd goal was a mistake from young Targett (he will be benched when Bertrand is back) because he slipped ... cross was actually pretty poor and any decent defender on even Targett on dry surface would have clear that 😉

Southampton is probably not the best defensive team in the league. They can't defend like Chelsea with 9 men behind the ball or like Aston Villa at the start of the season BUT they are so attacking that this is their defense!! They will never concede many .. a lot of clean sheets to come 😉

I hope so. but maybe 0.4 and the fact that bert has less % ownership overall and in the top whatever swings it.

maybe also important who plays in front of them, that's unsure at the moment.

He will keep bombing forward. Don't think he can match his scores.

true I remember I said a few weeks ago that I might go without sanchez and stick with caz and people were calling me crazy. Well I kept caz and sold ADM for sanchez.

caz has outscored sanchez in the past 2 gw's a long with ADM. I know its a short sample but its not a crazy decision going without sanchez.

The reason I'm asking is I don't know who to transfer out for eriksen for the dgw. I could always buy one of them back but I may get costa and I would have to obviously downgrade eriksen to do that. Not sure what I'll exactly do in the next few gw's.

yeah you're right. Somehow arsenal continues to get peanlties and caz on pk is a huge bonus. I know I can't rely on that and yeah hes also playing deeper but at the same time he's still on free kicks and corners and can always get assists.

I am probably losing Cazorla. He served me well with 34 point haul and last week but he's playing quite now and heavily rely on pens. Having that said I may lose Sanchez for Özil to free up some funds, quite dissappointed with Alexis these last GWs.

If treat Sanchez like Hazard , just put him in your team and forget about him

True other Arsenal mid options but Sanchez is the only one Id like to csptsin

I'd rather have Sanchez than any other mid, maybe along with Hazard.

really good talking point I think.

kind of shared my thoughts on some of it above.

Maybe somebody wants to look into it and come up with something. I'd be very happy. got to sort out the 3ars fwds somewhen...

      + for bringing it up.

he's the only arsenal player i'd consider captaining over the likes of aguero and hazard. If one is going to be giving him the armband in the coming weeks, than i think he is worth the premium.

My fantasy football team can't handle any champions league injuries. Chances of Aguero/Silva being rested vs. Barcelona.... 😉

This is your last chance, AdM. He gets the armband but if he can't produce at home against Sunderland he's out for Eriksen.

I think that's a bad way to think about it. He played very badly last game, don't captain him if you can think of someone better

Agreed, last chance and captain material are two different things.

      Chelsea is appealing the decision.

apart from selling wisdom do I take a hit somewhere?

    Panti (Foster)
    WISDOM Clyne Hutton ballerin (terry)
    Wally punch Mane boyd (hazard)
    Aguero Giroud (kane)
    1 FT. 7.0

    Howdy.

    Forster (Myhill)
Bellerin - Haidara- Wollscheid - PVA (Terry)
Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Silva (Boyd)
    Aguero - Kane(c) - Giroud

0.2 in the bank. 2 FTs.

Any ideas for (what is likely to be) a one-week punt on an Eriksen replacement? I can't afford to have four players not playing. Sterling at home to City is a possibility, though I see that game being low scoring. What would Jesus do? Or, alternatively, what would you do?

Oops, that Kane (c) is a result of me pasting from last week. Also the Spurs guys obviously are not playing so should be in brackets. W/e

Need Eriksen to drop 0.1 for my dream moves next week without taking a hit. Will be close i reckon.

I need some proper help here. Think I wanna get rid of Baird, PVA and Mane. I have 2 FTs and 4.4 mill to spend.
Want to get in Eriksen plus maybe another for DGW.

    Thoughts on these please!?

    1) Baird, PVA, Mane -> Naughton, Dawson and Silva for a hit (with 0.9 mill left over)
Any other defenders that are better?
    2) Just Baird and PVA -> Naughton and Dawson for free. And then mane -> Eriksen for GW28.

    De Gea

    Trippier Williams Sakho Cissokho

    Sanchez Ibe Boyd

    Aguero Giroud
0.3 in bank - Eriksen, Hazard, Terry & Kane with blank GW. What is my best option to have a decent team this GW?
