Every single Saints fan that I can see predicts a Southampton back four with Toby and Fonte in the middle.

I hope this happens, and Yoshida sits on the bench.

Toby and Fonte are first choice defenders for sure, but it all depends on whether Toby is fielded elsewhere, allowing Yoshi to play... I don't really know the deal but I would avoid Yoshi personally

        Yeh, my rival has him.

Unfortunately Schneiderlin limped off, so Toby might again be needed in the midfield role.

Yoshida will only play if one off Wanyama/Schneiderlin gets injured suspended. Toby will move into the midfield with Yoshida slotting into his place

If either of those are out, it dents the Saint's defence anyway. Remember when they suffered injuries last season in defence and midfield and became useless? Also their away record is poor. That's why I avoided Saints' defence altogether on my WC

Well it has been their first choice back 4 all season, so nothing surprising there. Yoshida's starts have coincided with Wanyama's suspension, one of the full-backs being injured/suspended or Toby being injured.

Don't think you need to worry about Yoshida from this point on

I read Yoshida has been very good against Stoke..
Did not look bad either against Spur's too..

So I think Koeman will not bring in Schneiderlin if he is not feeling really well physically, especially with Wanyama now available.

Early days to decide on Arsenal players yet as there will no doubt be injuries, shuffling of the pack and they may even wrap up 2nd place by the Sunderland game.

Giroud and Sanchez look like two clear picks, as do Panti and/or PVA. Not really sold on anyone else yet.

I agree, but no Leicester or Liverpool defence has really hurt me this game week. Many people have doubled up on Chelsea defence too. NDoye has saved my gameweek tbh despite the 8 point hit!

Could work. It's hard to know about Everton. They play Villa and Sunderland next, who will be up for the fight for sure so there are no guaranteed cleanies there. A starting Arsenal defender does look better, but obviously takes a precious Arsenal spot

It's a real shame that there just doesn't seem to be space to bring in Benteke, especially given the debacle of Remy in the past few weeks. Anybody see it differently to the below and offer a path to Sherwood forest's finest?

    Giroud -

He's one of the few Arsenal players almost guaranteed to start each of the remaining games (fit permitting), often being subbed and earning his rest at the end of each game. His role is unique to the team and faces little competition for that lone, target-man starting spot. That extra game? He's in.

    Aguero -

Remove one of the most consistent players in the game with QPR at home next week?

    Kane -

Still representing superb value with any replacement likely to ultimately cost your midfield lineup

Yeah double game weeks are great but having one so close to the end of the season is a bit annoying for those of us who didn't have wildcards.

Kane has got 6,5 last two weeks despite no service, so not that straight forward IMO. Could score against Man City, decent fixtures after....

For me, Benteke costing 1.5m more is also an issue. Poor team value.

Fixtures don't seem to matter any more. City and Hull are very tough games and the two away games won't be easy agains in in form Everton that just beat United and away to Stoke which is traditionally very tough.

Add in Spurs form right now compared to Bentekke at desperate Villa and I think it swings the bout in Bentekke's favour.

            Good points.
For me though, that 1.5m would be hard to raise without impacting the rest of my team too much, and also think Ramsey/Giroud in would bring more points.
Villa COULD slightly switch off once survival is secured, and even rest the odd player (prob not him) with the final on the horizon.

think if they were the same price, I would find a place for him. Shame.

They will be in survival mode till at least GW37/38 when Southampton and Burnley will also have nothing to play for. I don't think a lack of motivation will be a problem.

Kane would also be the one to go for me of those three, but I wouldn't be against Kane to match Benteke. If you're feeling punty and have ground to catch then I'd do it, but only if you have a spare FT that you don't need to get DGW cover

I guess the other option is to bring in a extra mid or defender instead of Giroud. With Villa fightin for survival Benteke is the main man with pretty good fixtures, he's got to be worth a punt with your Arsenal midfielders for Arsanal cover.

Benteke was one of the first names on my WC draft for GW35, but when I decided to WC GW34 and Kane and Aguero scored in GW33 I bottled it.

I will probably not bring him in and watch as he outscores all my strikers!

i could bring in Tekkers this week for Vardy and still get Giroud for GW37 which is the way I'm heading but also have cash in the bank to get Giroud in for either Kane or Tekkers depending on form.

might work. I would try to avoid planning to sell a player who you'll buy this week if possible. Seems a waste! Wait until next week at least before selling Vardy though. Newcastle at home looks delicious

    Team currently is...

    Panti/Kasper
    Kos / Ivan/ Wolly / Skrtel / Dawson
    Hazard / Sanchez / Sterling / Hendo / JWP
    N’doye / Kun / Kane

Which of the below options do you prefer? Will be making the changes over the coming weeks in preparation for GW37.

    A) Lose Kane (5DGW players)
Kane, Sterling, Hendo -> Giroud, Sanchez, Larsson

    B) Lose Hazard (5DGW players)
N’Doye, Hazard, Hendo -> Giroud, Sanchez, Larsson

    C) Lose Sterling (4DGW players)
N’Doye, Sterling, Hendo -> Giroud, Sanchez, Boyd

Most of my rivals have at least 1 Southampton defender and will definitely play them week in week out. I just have Davis.

Leading my cash MLs, so should I buckle down and start Davis? Or play my own game and start Schmeichel.

Starting Davis would be the smart defensive move. I think both will probably get 2-4 points though! I don't think benching Davies can hurt you really though so maybe just play your own game

yea the worst case scenario is a SOU cleanie while Schmeichel gets 2 points. They'd gain about 10 points minimum per week - without considering my other defenders' output that is. Probably bunker down and frustrate them.

Don't let the ticker confuse you though. Southampton's away form is poor and they are missing players that are key for CSs (defensive mids, first choice keeper). Also, they play relegation teams in the next two, whereas Leicester have the form and play Newcastle next.

yep - definitely should have saved the coin and gone Schmeichel - Myhill on my WC on hindsight.

But chucked Davis in there just as a defensive tactic. Def agree with you on their defensive prospects...but protecting my ML lead is more impt than climbing rank at the moment! Trying to win my MLs Chelsea-style - boring but inevitable 😎

Looking ahead to next season, if Schneiderlin is sold, then would the smart move be to avoid higher priced Saints defenders?

Based on something The Tinkerman said, at the top of the page, clearly they are not the same solid outfit when their defensive midfielders are not there.

I imagine they will be popular, but will you be avoiding them if Schneiderlin and/or Wanyama leaves?

Leading mini leagues - do you play defensive?

It's been a season or 2 since I last led my mini leagues (at least some of them) and it's one of the first time scores have still been tight at this stage (previously been 100+ ahead).

In similar positions how defensive do you play?

Throughout the season I've known roughly what players my rivals have but right now I know the exact differentials as I'm looking at their teams more and more often.

This week for example I'm looking at potentially getting Giroud in for a hit to replace Kane and keeping Vardy. Seems crazy giving Kane as a differential but feel Giroud will potentially do more damage over the coming weeks and my rival has him. Whether I wait or not I'm going to need to take a hit for the 3 Arsenal players I want so might not matter doing it now.

Additionally I'm considering waiting as late as possible to make the Arsenal transfers to see how everyone else brings in (rival wise).

Do you play defensive? My own game has got me to the top so maybe I shouldn't worry so much about what others are doing?

I haven't changed the way I play at all. There's no need to fix something which aint broken - Why change the way you play when it is the only reason which got you here in the first place?

      • Has Moderation Rights

FPL has never been a defensive game for me, with transfers so accessible at any point (-4)

Sky is a different matter with limited transfers, if im top i can just bring in players my rival owns to block him.

In short go on the attack and play your game

    3. foley_fd
      • 11 Years

There is definitely an element of defence in my strategy.

For example, I would have considered ditching Aguero in recent weeks - but with my rival having him, there's no chance he is sold.

Unnecessary risks aren't worth taking imo.

I think the pressure at the top makes you start over thinking things.

I too am leading my ML, and actually haven't enjoyed the last couple weeks as much to be honest.
I've been playing it as a game all season, and have pretty much led throughout. Now it's coming down to the last few games, the pressure of wanting to win and thinking I deserve to win is making it not as fun.
Not sure I'll do another big money league again, will probably just stick to one with my mates for laughs.

what TFF said above is exactly what is unnerving me at the moment. Have done relatively well all season, by my standards at least. Have always struggled with consistency but that's something i've cracked this season.

But with 4 GWs to go, i'm suddenly thinking very differently from how I've been thinking throughout the season. And I feel like there's danger of missing the big picture completely.

And one idea i'm toying with is to not bring in any Arsenal players til GW37...other than Giroud who I have now. Exactly the same thought process as you - want to see what my rivals do.

But i'm afraid the damage done by them will be too late to fix by then 🙁

      In the same boat..

Will surely take in Giroud for Remy this week to block my rival (who is my best friend unfortunately).

The approach I'm thinking about atm is to asses the players who are in my team atm, and compare them with their potentially promising replacements and judge whether they can keep up with (them - 4) for the next four weeks.

The players in my team who are facing a possible axe are Kane, Mane, Hutton, Puncheon, PVA, Sterling, Henderson.

Best three midfielders for the rest of the season *excluding* Arsenal midfielders?

From obvious to punts... it all seems murky and lots of want to change out our current holdings?

    Mata
    Adam
    De Jong

    Your guess?

Not sure why you'd bench a DGW player, even a defender. You just never know.

No idea. While on WC, I toyed with have one DGW player on the bench in case another didn't play.

Would have been a good idea for some as it turns out but I didn't do it. Starting 11 DGWers with Sanchez 1st sub seemed like enough... oh well... would have been Chester coming in for Costa otherwise : - (

      Sissoko over De Jong? Bold.

... my transfer after week 36 is going to be N'Doye -> Wickham in all likelihood... never saw either of those coming into my team. It is a fun time of the season.

Just keep it steady, and you'll end up top 5k. A lot of people will punt towards the end of the season, and the template isn't as template as before, because the wildcards turned things around. Its easier to climp rankings towards the end of the season.

Nice climb into the top 10k! I think that's almost purely down to Harper!!!

Any idea on what your punts will be for the remainder? Benteke would be my guess, but I noticed you have no Arsenal and will probably bring in Giroud and Sanchez plus one... boring!

      Well done with Harper.

I hope Haz, Fab and Ivan yields you (us too... 😉 ) massive hauls tonight. Though not sure it would affect your GW rank much. But still, would be good... 😀

How important is having Giroud ahead of wk37?

Some people have mentioned that he may get rotated and, although Austin to Giroud has seemed like the obvious transfer for ages, i'm wondering now if i'd be better served by bringing in a Sunderland striker and using those extra funds to turn Sterling into Sanchez...

Not without downgrading Aguero or Hazard... tricky!

Aguero to Giroud would open up some options, e.g.

          Murray > Benteke
          Mane > Sanchez

worth the sacrifice to get rid of deadwood?

Daily Mirror has rumored Rooney is out for the season

      Aguero is one and only

Giroud is L'Efficient Donkey with a DGW in 37 but could be timeshared

Aguero 1st, Giroud 2nd, seems the choice... unless you need more money elsewhere, then Giroud.

Get Sanchez only if you think fear of going without him worth extra £2.5m over the likes of Giroud, Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla. Because undoubtedly form wise Giroud, Ozil & Ramsey are better. As far as rotation threat is concerned no player is guaranteed to play both Sunderland & West Brom fixtures- it could be anyone so wouldn't worry about it too much. I've Ospina & would get 2 of Giroud, Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla. I'll have spare cash for GW 38 for 1 last punt- could be Benteke, Lukaku or even Diego Costa.
