Game week 35’s early opener pits a Leicester City side bristling with confidence against a floundering Newcastle United outfit. Despite falling to a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last time out, the Foxes have posted four wins in their last five. The Magpies, meanwhile, strive to arrest a seven-match losing streak that stretches back to mid-February.

Nigel Pearson’s men have discovered their scoring touch of late, netting the joint-highest number of goals (12) in the last six Gameweeks. Jamie Vardy’s return to form has been instrumental, with the pacy striker notching three goals and as many assists in his previous six starts. Leicester’s rearguard has been much improved, too, and, having secured back-to-back clean sheets prior to the Chelsea defeat, will fancy their chances of another shut-out given that Newcastle have recorded just five goals in nine Gameweeks. Pearson makes three changes to his teamsheet today as Jeffrey Schlupp is fit to return at wing-back. Riyad Mahrez is also recalled, while Matt James comes in for the injured Andy King.

Newcastle will look to Ayoze Perez to provide a much-needed spark up front, with Siem De Jong still not fit enough to start and Papiss Cisse serving the last match of his ban in this encounter. Perez posed a significant threat when he tallied his sixth goal of the season during the Toon’s 3-2 defeat to Swansea City – no single Gameweek forward produced more attempts inside the box than the Spaniard’s four last time out. Perez starts along with Paul Dummett who returns to the defence following injury. Moussa Sissoko is also recalled having served out a three-match ban. Vurnon Anita and Remy Cabella drop to the bench.

On second thought, if you're asking this question, maybe the members' stats wouldn't help you. 😉

They all add up under chances created and then there's separate stats for set pieces so you can find out if they're any good at them.

Yet it is the first time all season he has got an assist from a set piece, let alone two. Classic example of the ease at which you can find confirmations.

So if someone created 100 chances from set pieces without an assist, then got two assists the next game from them, that wouldn't be useful stats?

No, because stats are completely detached from any context, especially set pieces. A chance created from a set piece just means a team mate got a head on it, it doesn't mean it threatened at all.

I bet in the top 5 of best 'set piece' takers are a couple players you wouldn't even consider.

Like, for example, Tadic who had amazing accuracy from set pieces... because he would always play them short.

Newcastle have won none of the last 103 Premier League games in which they've trailed by two or more goals. With a striker force who have a combined career total of six Premier League goals, you wouldn't fancy this is the day that changes.

Pardew was a puppet just as Carver is.

Every single Newcastle fan knew that Ashley was the real problem but we'd come to terms with the fact that he wasn't going to sell up for a loss.

    Have Huth and Morgan...

Was all set in playing Huth but then injury doubt made the choice easier for me.... Nothing to do with any skill just pure luck.... That's the way this game goes sometimes

What do Newcastle fans think is going to happen if Ashley does sell the club?

Someone is going to come in and just shower it with money?!

It's fair to assume someone will come in and have more ambition than Ashley...

I don't think he was a good manager. That is my opinion.

HOWEVER, I, along with every other sane fan, knew/know that Ashley is the problem.

I'm not trying to argumentative I and most of the rest of the people I know fell a little bit in love with NUFC under Keegan and Robson. But what you're saying comes back to my original point, who is this knight in shining armour who's going to come in and buy Newcastle and not also run it as a business.

That doesn't mean that anyone wants to do it at Newcastle and it's much harder to do with financial fair play having come in...

You're right, no one wanted to buy at Ashley's price.

But surely you feel some sympathy for the fans, football clubs aren't just normal firms.

I do feel sympathy, I just feel that if they think that if Ashley sells the club that whomever buys it is going to shower it with cash then they're going to be very disappointed and then we'll probably just have the same situation again.

Maybe not, but perhaps they won't siphon the money out of the club.

Are they siphoning money out of the club, I was under the impression it was a very large interest free loan from Ashley that was propping it up.

Well they did try and replace Cabaye, they just haven't worked out. Cabella and Riviere were signed for a combined £18 million and have been rubbish. Their other big money signing De Jong has been injured all season.

              Big money signings?

Riviere was a 6m striker, that's peanuts in modern football.

We were naive/unlucky that De Jong's missed the entire season, but he too was cheap (probably for a reason he's always been injury prone).

Hull spend upwards of 40M, and that's Hull.

You're right it is peanuts, I was just making the point that they'd got lucky with their transfers in previous seasons and that wasn't going to last forever.

Having Remy on loan last season also gave a rosy glow to the team.

Hull also sold Shane Long for £12 million and their net spend for this season is £25 million. But you're right Newcastle have spent very little in recent seasons on transfers.

The loan isn't propping the club up, most PL clubs are in debt.

Ashley wanted to sell years ago but no one wanted him to pay him what he's put in. So instead he's sold all the high earners, not re-invested transfer fees and started trying to make his money back. Whilst that is his right as owner, it's not how anyone wants their football club run.

Newcastle fans generally have delusions of grandeur. Someone once said they were the best support in England and now they just claim it and think they are and always will be a English football powerhouse.

They aren't. No good players would go to Newcastle and they have to get lucky with a few risky signings like keegan did in his title push many moons ago.

Lest not forget the champ league qualifier against partisan when up from the away leg. Helps filled stadium all saving their money for the group stage proper. Shame they didn't make it.

True. But is That Ashley's fault? Or the players. The most of which have got the 35 points that you're on in the first half of the season.

Yes reinforcements are needed but it seems to be a case of blaming different people each week.
