Leighton Baines is ruled out of Everton’s final two fixtures after undergoing minor ankle surgery. Danny Welbeck is likely to be available for Arsenal’s double Gameweek, whilst Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is looking to go on the offensive as Leicester roll up to the Stadium of Light.

Baines out for season following surgery

Roberto Martinez revealed in his Thursday morning press conference that Leighton Baines has undergone surgery on his ankle and will be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign, returning for the start of pre-season:

“We had Leighton’s ankle checked. He has had surgery. It was straight-forward. He will be out until the start of pre-season.”

The Scout Says: Prior to succumbing to back-to-back defeats, Everton’s rearguard notched four clean sheets in six outings, so Baines’ absence threatens to disrupt their momentum. Nonetheless, the ownerships of Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman might still fancy the Merseysiders’ chances of securing shut-outs in their final two fixtures, given that both Tottenham (five goals in six) and West Ham (one goal in four) have displayed an impotence in the final third of late. With Bryan Oviedo also ruled out with a foot injury, Toffees youngster Luke Garbutt (3.9) is poised to earn a couple of starts in his breakthrough season, presenting a budget option for those managers attempting to free up funds for the double. To that end, Baines 14% ownership are now afforded the luxury of cashing in and redistributing the left-back’s considerable value – drafting in the likes of 4.1-priced Patrick van Aanholt ahead of Sunderland’s double would generate significant cash to splash on Arsenal’s big-hitters further up the field.

Welbeck primed for Old Trafford return

Arsene Wenger is confident that Danny Welbeck will be available for selection for Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United on Sunday. The Gunners frontman is said to have recovered from the knee injury that’s sidelined him for the last two Gameweeks.

The Scout Says: Welbeck’s return to the squad offers Wenger a way to shake up Arsenal’s forward line – which he may elect to do in light of the North London club failing to register in their previous two home encounters. The versatile English marksman could be fielded on the right flank in Arsenal’s favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up or as the lone striker, threatening the starts of Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud, who currently occupy those berths. The latter has come off the boil of late and drawn blanks in four successive outings, so Wenger may well be tempted to deploy Welbeck against his former club, given he was amongst the goals in the Gunners’ FA Cup win at Old Trafford earlier this year. Even if Wenger sticks by his regulars for the double, though, Welbeck’s likely return affords the Gunners boss the option of rotating his side in Gameweek 38, should Arsenal clinch a top three spot prior to their season finale at home to West Brom.

Advocaat targets win over Foxes at all costs

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat will accept nothing short of a victory when they host Leicester City at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Speaking to the club’s official site, the Dutch manager stressed the importance of the supporters spurring them on to secure all three points against the Foxes:

“It’s not only the final home game but a very crucial game against Leicester. Hopefully, not only the players, but our fans really realise how important this game is for everybody. They have to make a lot of noise because we really need it. Leicester are a very difficult team to beat and in that game we have to give more than 100% to get the result. There’s only one result that we need and that’s the three points.”

The Scout Says: Sitting two points ahead of 18th-placed Hull City, Sunderland know a home win would keep them safe from relegation if the Tigers lose at Tottenham Hotspur. Given they then face trips to Arsenal and Chelsea, it’s clear that Advocaat wants to seal his side’s survival as quickly as possible, bearing in mind that a draw against the Foxes wouldn’t be enough to clinch survival due to Hull’s superior goal difference. In the event that the Wearsiders triumph over Nigel Pearson’s men, those managers who invested in Sunderland for the double will hope that Hull emerge victorious at White Hart Lane, therefore giving Advocaat’s side everything to play for at the Emirates. Conversely, should Sunderland clinch their survival prior to midweek, it’s arguable that they’ll be a little less motivated for the Arsenal clash, thus boosting the Gunners’ prospects for Wednesday’s showdown.

Read a few posts on here about Cazorla’s stats being impressive. Stats have their benefits, however there is no substitute for watching the games to analyse players. Cazorla's stats are misleading. His stats improve later on in the match when Wenger usually makes the following substitutions Coquelin > Wilshere and Giroud > Walcott. When these changes are made, this allows Cazorla to move further up the pitch.

Cazorla has potential for points, but not greater than Ramsey or Sanchez, simply because his role is to sit deep and move the ball upfield quickly with his passing range.

The problem with Arsenal Midfielders is, Ramsey, Ozil and Sanchez all want the central midfield role, currently occupied by Ozil. Which isn’t good news for Ramsey or Sanchez owners, whose work rate is superb and both like to pick up the ball early, and arrive late in the box, whereas Ozil likes to occupy areas outside the box. Will Wenger change positions of midfielders in the forthcoming fixtures? well, the last game between Man Utd vs Arsenal, Ozil played central, if that is an indicator!

I base all my transfers on stats this year. Last time I got in Cazorla he went mental.

As stated in my post, stats have their benefits, however, you can't rely on this alone, great it may work for you, however there are many FPL managers with good ranks who don't have access to stats.

Thats true, but some managers don't have access to the games, like Simon March and have to go by stats alone.

Great and Simon is probably very good at analysing stats and somewhat fortunate to bring in players at the 'right' time this season, which we can all learn from. Nevertheless, most managers rely on combination of watching games and reviewing stats to manage their FPL teams.

But his stats then are similar to what they are now. As long as he's getting the amount of shots in the box as he is now, I don't care if he centre back.

    Bertrand -> Kosc

I've got Giroud already. It was going to be clear cut and get Kosc in but the likely hood of Hazard getting a rest and him being off form is making me consider going for three arse attackers.

Would you have enough to get him back in again for gw 38? I'd say go for it but if you're playing conservatively then perhaps it's better to hold on to him.

    Simple stick or twist?

    A: Benteke and Koscielny

    or

B: Benteke and Koscielny to Giroud and Kolarov

    Rest of the team:

    Panti (Schmeichal)
    PvA, Skrtel, Kos, Bertrand (Dawson)
    Sanchez Ozil Coutinho (Hazard, Cambiasso)
    Kun Kane Benteke

      Where Sanchez vs a WBA
or Chelsea vs SUN is more appealing right now

I have Giroud, Sanchez and Caz. What do you guys think of Giroud to Defoe and Albrighton to Ramsey for -4. Currently 20 pts ahead in cash mini league and OR top 500.

I really dont trust Giroud to deliver but this would be my first -4 since xmas.

    Team would be

    Pants (Schmiecal)
PVA - Ivan - Skrtel (Aldeweirald, Mcshane)
    Haz - Coutinho - Ramsey - Sanchez - Cazorla
    Aguero, Defoe (Vardy)

madness taking a DGW player out to put another in for a hit.
the minus 4 might nullify the double week that the player you put it gets.
If Ramsey gets 8 you make it 4. if you keep him and giroud gets 4 minimum you've already won in not doing that move. provided rams dosent get more!

Got 1 free transfer, but not afraid to take a hit.
Just can’t decide what to change in this squad…

    Ospina, Schmeichel
    Terry, Ivan, PvA, Schlupp, Skrtel
    Coutinho, Hazard, Sanchez, Ozil, Grealish
    Benteke, Aguero, Vardy
    (0.6m)

    Defoe/Graham in for Vardy?
    Bring in Kolorov/Coleman for Ivan/Terry?
    Silva in for Hazard?
Bring in Panti & Carzorla for Ospina & Hazard?

    What do you think?
    What would you do?

    1) Hazard
    2) Silva
    3) Hendo -4

    B) Ozil
    C) Cazorla

If you think Hazard will destroy Sunderland in gwk 38 and if you aren't willing to take a hit to get him back in, the next best option for me would be 3) Hendo -4.

Start Hazard or Benteke? You may wonder why I'm in such a position and the answer is that I think Leicester will rip Sunderland to shreds so I'm starting Vardy and Albrighton.

Benteke, though I would strongly advise you to bench Albrighton.

No, he is the only player in the league with more chances created than Ozil over the last 6.

        2. Doolittle
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 9 months ago

No, but he also hasn't stopped being Marc Albrighton 😉

I can see why you want to play him, maybe I'm judging from the past too much, I could just never play Albrighton ahead of Benteke and Hazard.

          1. Captain Peacock
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, I understand he doesn't have the pedigree of the other two, but sometimes the budget option beats the heavyweight. I think hazards mind is not on the game at this point, he's on the beach like West Ham and Southampton.

I'd definitely start Benteke, if your instinct is Albrighton over Hazard then play Albrighton - you'll kick yourself if you bench him and he scores well.
