On Tuesday evening, Southampton announced the capture of Malaga striker Juanmi on a four-year contract, marking Ronald Koeman’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old Spain international expressed his delight at making the switch to St Mary’s Stadium, insisting that the Premier League’s iconic brand of football should play to his strengths:

“It’s a pleasure to be here and I am looking forward to being a part of this club. I am anxious and I want to start as soon as possible. This is a big club and it has shown a lot of trust in me. The training ground is magnificent and likewise the stadium. It really, really is a big club. Since I was very young, it’s always been a dream for me to play in the Premier League. The style of football played here is similar to the way I play, so it’s a dream come true. Now I just want to start playing and to start scoring goals.”

The History

A Malaga native, Juanmi (Juan Miguel Jiménez López) spent three years in Malaga CF’s youth team from 2008. His first senior debut for the club arrived in January 2010, when he netted the Andalusians’ only goal as they were trounced 5-1 by Getafe – making him the club’s youngest ever (16 years old) goalscorer.

In the 2009/10 and 2010/11 campaigns, Juanmi found his time split between playing for the first-team and the Malaga B side. Nonetheless, he still managed to earn 17 league appearances in the 2010/11 campaign, tallying four goals and two assists in the process. The next one-and-a-half seasons harvested just seven appearances for the budding Spaniard, prompting a loan move to Segunda Division outfit Racing de Santander.

Despite failing to net throughout 19 outings for Los Verdiblancos (Green and White), Juanmi was afforded more regular playing time in the 2013/14 season by Malaga’s new head coach Bernd Schuster, who’d replaced the Manchester-City-bound Manuel Pellegrini. He recorded four goals across 22 appearances, yet was only granted 996 minutes of pitch time.

In the wake of Schuster’s sacking the following summer, Malaga’s current manager Javi Gracia took up the mantle and handed Juanmi a starting berth. In his final campaign before sealing a move to England’s top-flight, Juanmi registered eight goals and two assists, having clocked 2,232 minutes. His highlight arrived when he scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Barcelona at the Nou Camp in February – which, incidentally, is the last time the La Liga champions were bested on home turf.

Juanmi boasted a great record for Spain U19s, winning two successive U19 Euros (2011,2012) and carding eight goals in 19 outings. A debut senior cap arrived in March after Diego Costa pulled out of the squad through injury, with Vicente del Bosque handing him the central striker berth in a 2-0 friendly defeat to the Netherlands.

The Prospects

A pacy forward with a knack for running the channels, Juanmi could conceivably be fielded in any of the front four positions in Ronald Koeman’s favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up. He’s unlikely to usurp Graziano Pelle, though, given that the 5ft 612 inch Spaniard lacks the height and presence of a lone centre forward and has been far from prolific in La Liga – despite Pelle’s 14-match goal drought, he still mustered four more goals than the Saints’ latest recruit.

Koeman certainly has a wealth of options at his disposal to fill the roles in behind Pelle. The likes of Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic, James Ward-Prowse, Shane Long, Eljero Elia and a returning Jay Rodriquez will all be tussling for that trio of berths, which surely heightens the risk of rotation.

Southampton’s qualification for the Europa League by virtue of a seventh-place finish should place an additional emphasis on squad shuffling. Everton plummeted from 5th to 11th place under the pressure of a European campaign last term, so there’s a certainly a question mark concerning the Saints’ capacity to cope with the extra fixtures.

Delving into the data, Juanmi clearly struggled to fashion many attempts on goal (37 in 34 appearances) last term, yet was clinical when these chances presented themselves. A shot conversion rate of 28.6% is superior to any member of the Saints squad, with Mane (18.3%), Elia (13.3%), Tadic (7.5%), Pelle (9.8%) and Long (13.5%) all posting vastly inferior figures. This should serve Juanmi well if Koeman opts to employ him as an impact sub at first to test the water, affording him a sustained run in the side if these cameos prove influential.

Given Koeman’s penchant for a target man up top – Pelle seems more secure in terms of starts, while Juanmi’s appeal could well be limited if, as expected, he’s listed as a forward across the Fantasy games. Indeed, with Rodriguez also anticipated to come in as a striker, Mane’s likely classification as a midfielder strengthens the Senegal international’s prospects.

Despite the reservations regarding rotation, the newly-released fixtures certainly boost the Saints’ prospects of a strong start. Koeman’s men face just two of last term’s top seven (United and Chelsea) in the opening nine Gameweeks, leaving them seven favourable clashes (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, SWA, LEI) to help them hit the ground running.

Juanmi could well be handed the platform to stake an early claim for regular starts. Given the fierce competition in attacking areas, he will surely have to seize any opportunity that comes his way.

Catching up on FFS after a long day.

There's an error in the above article - we do not own Eljero Elia and his loan expires at the end of the month. I haven't heard anything about us renewing the loan or making the deal permanent, not can I see why we would.

Callum Wilson looks like a great player. Terrific pace, great timing of runs and clinical finishing. That tends to bode well in the EPL, ala Mane and Walcott.

Apparently 10 Premier League clubs are interested in him though. Let's hope he stays at Bournemouth, he has great fixtures. At 5.5/6.0m, he could enable a strong midfield.

Cov fan here. Love him to pieces, and thrilled to see him doing so well. His main quality is his electric pace, but he's also an increasingly composed finisher. I think he'll score a few, but I also think it might be a little too soon for him to take the Premier League by storm. Pacey strikers at small teams tend to rely on scraps, like Ings at Burnley. I find the more successful ones tend to be able to make their own goals out of nothing, and he's not really that sort of player.

Fixtures released, tickers launched and membership renewed. Quite a productive day I must say!

Btw, has anyone noticed that the Season Ticker in the members area doesn't show any recent meeting scores when you hover over all the Leicester fixtures? Have any of you experienced this or is it just me?

I've seen a few mentions on here about players returning late / knackered from the Copa America. The tournament finishes a good month before the new season starts - Is there really any strong feeling that the likes of Sanchez / Aguero etc will be struggling or even not involved early doors?

Managers will give them about 3 weeks holiday as they've had a much longer season, and will then ease them back into the first team ie most tend to play with the side from pre season.
Having said that, Citeh will almost certainly rush Kun back for GW2, while Arsenal will probably want Alexis starting for GW 3

    Rotation Blocks for 2015/16:

    GW1-GW2 (Two Gameweeks)
    GW3-GW6 (Four Gameweeks)
    GW7-GW8 (Two Gameweeks)
    GW9-GW13 (Five Gameweeks)
    GW14-GW17 (Four Gameweeks)
    GW18-GW25 (Eight Gameweeks)
    GW26-GW27 (Two Gameweeks)
    GW28-GW32 (Five Gameweeks)
    GW33-34 (Two Gameweeks)
    GW35-38 (Four Gameweeks)

Apologies if this has already been posted earlier today!

For those who don't know, rotation blocks are a result of the way the fixture list is composed. In each block, ten teams will have one set of fixtures, whilst the other 10 ten have the opposite. So for a simple example, in the first rotation block, GW1-GW2, ten teams have a home fixture followed by an away fixture, with the other ten having an away followed by a home match. At the other end of the spectrum, in GW18-25, the longest block of the season, every team has one of these two sets of fixtures:

    H/A/A/H/H/A/A/H
    A/H/H/A/A/H/H/A

These can be a useful tool to be aware of when working out your defensive rotations. Of course, for a pure home/away rotation like Newcastle and Sunderland, the teams will be in different halves in every single rotation block. However, if two sides are in separate halves for just a few blocks in a row, it can provide you with a great rotation that lasts for months.

Arsenal and Manchester United with Tottenham and Manchester City
Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Liverpool with West Bromwich Albion, Watford and Everton
West Ham United, Sunderland, Norwich City and Leicester City with Chelsea, Newcastle, Southampton and Swansea

A little over by my rough eye, but could be sort of close. Going to be very tough to squeeze in Mane as a 4th mid while plumping for a premium striker and Ivanovic to kick off I think.

Mane was by far and away their best attacking player towards the end of last season, so he has that going for him. It's difficult to know how Koeman will manage his squad with EL on the cards, but I think at least initially Mane is a very good pick. Especially with their favorable opening fixtures. That said, he will probably not make my GW1 team sheet 😀

I think his price will be a little awkward to fit him in...expecting him to come in at 8.0. I am probably going to try for two 9+ mids and two 6-7ish mids to kick off. I don't like him enough to fill a premium mid spot with him nor do I think i will be able to afford him as a 3rd midfielder. But things can change of course.

I think I'll avoid Chelsea defence at the start - they were poor defensively at the start of last season (only Ivanovic's attacking returns kept him up there points wise) and I wouldn't feel comfortable having 7% or 7.5% of my starting budget tied up in one defender.

I agree with that overall completely but I've not started with Ivan last two seasons and that hasn't gone well. I feel like just blindly forgoing rational thought, getting him in, and starting him every week. Not sure which of those two halves of my brain will win out in the end but as of right now I'm leaning towards blindly trusting in Ivan...

Agree Walsh. Though to be honest its one of the parts i enjoy the most, there is room to be creative and take a few chances.

The forward and mid choices seem to be-

Which 3 out of these 4 do i go with- Hazard/Silva/Aguero/Sanchez

      Giggs posted this last page-

Yeah all valid things...I'm leaning towards Aguero and none of those other lads at the moment though Silva may find his way into my opening team. I just think that there will be some 6-7.5 midfield gems to enable us to spend more on defense to start. I'd feel very sad starting with that defense. Always feel like a broken defense is what leads to an early WC and relying on those teams seems like a lot of 1 and 2 pointers.

    1-0 FT
Firmino missed a big chance for Brazil, otherwise they were very lacklustre against a stout deep Colombia defence, who deserved the win.
Neymar had another hissy fit in the second half but wasn't booked.

Decent, although that's a pricey backline. Bojan should start to the season but you'll have to wonder where hell play, was playing CAM right before his injury and Stoke have just signed another striker. Also I'm a big Bolasie fan but his fixtures aren't all that flash.

Also - no Arsenal. I think it'll be a struggle to fit htem in at the start though, likely no Sanchez so where do you look? Do you pay 6.0 for a nailed Kosc or instead go for one of their 8-9m midfielders, which could be a lottery?

Giroud up top isn't completely safe either. It's hard.

He was playing CAM last season too though when he started to click and fire on all cylinders before his knee fell to bits. Also on pens. Just fancy him. Love cheering for the little fellow and was all that made them tick. I'm expecting him in around 6.5 if he's fit to start the season I think I'll have him. Bolasie's fixtures are crap but again just think it's his time. At 6-7 he should be the king of that price bracket I think!

All Southampton defensive starters will be 5.5 or more I think. That aside, defense looks very thin to me from the onset. Rest of the squad looks okay, but I am not a big fan of 3 premium mids to start off....but you could find a couple of good dudes to fill out those two forward spots for 14ish I think.

What do you lot reckon of this team?

Rotating 4.5 GK (Krul/Panti if priced)
    Ivanovic (7.5) WHam (5.0) Villa (4.5) Norwich (4.5) Bournemouth (4.0)
    Hazard (12) Sanchez (11) Henderson (7.5) JWP (5.5) Cheapie (4.5)
    Aguero (13) Wilson (6) Deeney (6)

    Total: 100

Pretty conservative pricing too, I reckon.

Defs are based on good rotating fixtures early on (WHM/BOU and NOR/AVL). Will probably swap out WHM for WBA when their fixtures improve.

Hazard cannot possibly be 12 after being 10 this season. 11.0 max imo.

Other than that, I wouldn't get a Villa defender under sherwood, I wouldn't start with Sanchez (even if fit and ready) and I wouldn't start with two promoted strikers.

Eriksen is so inconsistent it's not funny

Even if the Chelsea attackers score lots of points?

                You don't think they will?
I'm happy to go with the players I think will score highest even if they play for the same team. Points are points, coverage is nonsense.

They'll score goals but not enough to warrant three attackers imo.

Plus, we only have 100m, spending it on three players from the same team that are almost 10 or over is not a good decision imo

Hardest part is to find those starting 4.0 defs and 4.5 mids. Hopefully we get atleast few.

4.5 mids shouldn't be too much of a problem, although yes 4.0 defs could be

From my 1yr experience, never really required 5th mid/defender 😛

Well last season Boyd did more than enough as a 5th mid and Whittingham season before.

          Wasn't Whittingham 5.0?

Yes at the start. Got him in my wc when he was something like 4.7. If I remember right he didn't do anything in first 8 gws.

5.0 is good price for fifht mid if he takes all cks, fks, pens like Whittingham did.

That is why Dummett was so important last Season.

4.5 mids aren't such of a problem, there are always those ultra-defensive midfielders in average clubs, they will always be priced 4.5
Whether they will be Boyd or not is a different matter altogether.

Robin van Persie to Real Madrid... this rumor is interesting.

Could work out, RVP is still a quality player, his fitness does not permit him to play week-in week-out, but would be more than a worthy alternative of Benzema.

Anyone else going with only one playing gk for this season?

For me its probably 5.0/4.0 or 4.5/4.0 once again.

Really annoyed about those benched points week after week.

Depends on prices. I'm happy to have a main keeper, but I'd rather my 2nd keeper played.

True. 2nd playing keeper is nice to have. Krulliot failed quite miserably at the start of last season.

but Myhill/Panti cost me lot of points at end of season. Somehow managed to pick wrong keeper week after week.

Infact, I only used 3GKs combo last year 😀
        GW1-7: Pantilimon-Mannone
        GW8-23: WC, Heaton-Gilks
        GW24-38: Jan WC, Pantilimon-Krul

that 1.0-0.5 saved from not having proper 2nd keeper is really valuable.

I may just go with Myhill. Unpreditable clean sheets from West Brom, could pull it out of the bag against anyone. Only problem will be when Foster returns

Just get Myhill and the Bournemth goalie 4.0. Rot well and cheap. Gives backup if Myhill gets crocked too.
