Sunderland kick-started their summer spending spree last Wednesday with the acquisition of centre-half Sebastian Coates from Liverpool. Having spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, the 24-year-old has made his switch permanent, signing a four-year contract for a fee believed to be around the ยฃ2 million mark.

The Black Cats sporting director Lee Congerton hailed the playerโ€™s acquisition and reckons Coatesโ€™ previous year with the club will ensure he slots in seamlessly:

“Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick [Advocaat] last season and we are delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis. He has Barclays Premier League experience, which is important and, after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly.”

Coates, meanwhile, admitted that Dick Advocaatโ€™s decision to stay at Sunderland, having previously quit the post, proved pivotal in persuading him to sign up:

“I think it was 90%, because he gave me confidence last year when he came [to the club] and for me it was very important to play and to be involved in the team. When the manager came [back], it was very important for me to be here. He gives the players confidence, the team, and the supporters. When he came we were not in a good moment, so he gave everyone confidence. He trusted in the team, that we could get safe and that was important. Iโ€™m really happy to be here. It is a pleasure for me to come back again. I will try to do my best this season and to help the team.”

The History

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Coates joined top-flight outfit Nacional from the age of 11, where he progressed through the youth set-up and assumed the role of captain at every level. Coates earned his first senior cap during the 2008/09 season, before spending the subsequent two campaigns as a starter in central defence, tallying career stats of five goals and seven assists across 78 outings.

In the summer of 2011, Coates made the switch across the Atlantic to Liverpool. The Uruguay international failed to muscle his way into first-team contention, mustering just 12 league appearances throughout his three seasons at Anfield. Coates suffered a knee injury in an international friendly prior to the start of the 2013/14 campaign, which ruled him out for the majority of the season. A loan move back to Nacional in the latter stages saw him chalk up five appearances in South America.

In the dying embers of the 2014 summer transfer window, Coates was shipped out to Sunderland on a season-long loan deal, teaming up with fellow-Uruguayan Guy Poyet. Coates saw limited involvement while Poyet was at the helm, however, and managed a mere three starts until his compatriotโ€™s sacking in mid-March. Under Dick Advocaatโ€™s stewardship, Coates started all of the Black Catsโ€™ final six fixtures, with the Wearside club narrowly avoiding relegation by virtue of a five-match unbeaten streak from Gameweek 34.

After earning 10 caps for the Uruguay U20s, Coates registered his first start for the full team in the 2011 Copa America. Los Charrรบas went on to scoop the trophy that year, with Coates named as the Young Player of the tournament. More recently, the six foot five inches centre-back clocked just two minutes in the 2014 World Cup, while he featured in a 1-1 draw to Paraguay in the 2015 Copa America. In all, Coates has recorded one goal in 17 appearances for Uruguay.

The Prospects

Having earned starts in the final six Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Coates will be hopeful of ousting Wes Brown from the starting XI to partner John Oโ€™Shea in the heart of Advocaatโ€™s defence for the season ahead.

Although the Uruguayanโ€™s improved pitch time was due to Brown sustaining another injury, itโ€™s fair to say his impact over those final few matches, in which the Wearsiders secured their safety, was vital for the Black Cats. Between Gameweek 34 and 37, Sunderland were breached on just two occasions in five matches and gave up the fewest big chances (five) of any side in the league before their 3-1 loss to Chelsea on the final day of the season.

In terms of Sunderland’s defensive prospects, Patrick van Aanholt looks set to remain the prime route into their rearguard. The former Chelsea left-back tallied just 84 points last term โ€“ having sat out 10 matches in the middle of the season through injury โ€“ which should ensure that his value doesn’t increase beyond the 4.5 mark. Van Aanholt notched 17 more attempts on goal (30) than any other Sunderland backline option and averaged a shot every 81.2 minutes, which was fourth amongst defenders with 1000+ minutes. Furthermore, Van Aanholt crafted 25 more chances (35) than the next best among their back line and averaged a key pass every 69.6 minutes, which was third for defenders with a minimum of 1000 minutes in 2014/15.

If Coates is afforded a run in the side, however, his underlying stats paint a promising picture. Only two Sunderland defenders attempted more efforts than the former Reds recruit (seven), even though he clocked a paltry 872 minutes. In comparison, O’Shea (seven) and Brown (four) achieved their totals while being afforded 3448 and 2101 minutes of pitch time, respectively, suggesting that Coatesโ€™ aerial ability in the opposition box could be a real weapon for Advocaatโ€™s outfit.

Elsewhere in the Sunderland backline, Costel Pantilimon โ€“ who amassed 123 points in 28 appearances over the previous campaign โ€“ is sure to attract investment from managers looking to source a cheap keeper. Despite finishing just two places above the relegation berths, Sunderland registered as many clean sheets as Arsenal (13) and only one fewer than Manchester City. Furthermore, only two sides (West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool) carded more clean sheets away from home than the Wearsiders, illustrating their proficiency at shutting up shop on the road. Pantilimonโ€™s penchant for picking up save points looks key here โ€“ he earned at least one save point in 18 of his 28 appearances and averaged 4.4 points per game.

Looking at the fixtures, Sunderland enjoy a highly favourable start to the new season which is sure to earn Fantasy managersโ€™ attention. Given that they face just two of last seasonโ€™s top seven in the opening 11 Gameweeks (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou, mum, WHM, wba, NEW, eve), Advocaatโ€™s backline certainly look worthy of our investment in the opening few months as the Dutchman looks to build momentum and avoid another relegation scrap.

Start dates are always changing so it seems.and the leagues don't seem to care about the window. Transfer window seems to be fixed as July and August with a slight extension for weekends I think

It would make more sense to standardise the kick off date and transfer window date together rather than standardise just the end of the transfer window date. Having the end of the window a month after the start of the season is more than a bit unfair on those leagues who start early.

Leagues start in August sometime. They should open up the transfer window for June and July. Two months should be adequate to sign players.

The only problem is the tournaments on in the summer. Teams could apply for an emerency transfer then if players get a season ending injury.

But in general I agree. Its annoying that the season starts and teams are still chopping and changing

    Hey guys and girls, morning!

Something that popped out of my discussion with Ryan last night (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/06/great-expectations-danny-rose-2/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_10457160), was the role player pricing has to play with how quickly team templates form.

For me, it is probably the one aspect to the game FPL must get right, and with the game about to go live, I kind of hope they're listening.

First off, what I mean by "template" is an FPL starting 11 that only differs by 2 or 3 players among equally ranked teams. It's the team that tends to take shape based on price and form.

What do you make to this. If ALL players had the same price, would teams be more or less template?

If this were to happen, you could actually pick anyone. We would all be allowed to select our preferred 11 with no price restrictions, and there is a good chance we'd all gravitate to the highest scoring players from the past seasons. We'd be rotating Arsenal and Chelsea defenders and alternating United/City attackers, trying to gain a small advantage. Teams would be more template.

So the combination of player pricing and managing a limited budget needs to test how much we really value a player. We need to be that proverbial kid in the sweet shop but with only a pound* to spend (insert value and currency of your domestic and economic status ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

    Consider this.

It takes a few overpriced player to reduce the enjoyment of the game.
It takes just one undervalued player to break the game.

Harry Kane had a starting price of 5m last year. Largely not expected to feature in the Premier League, he went on to be a regular scoring 21 goals in the process. Arguably, he was essential in FPL regardless of price. The fact he was 5m (4.8m to some!), meant he could fill a spot in your starting 11 and free up funds to get premium picks in other positions.

The issue was exacerbated by the form of Charlie Austin, who made a mockery of his 6m price tag. But, I'm prepared to accept that Austin was priced correctly and simply had an outstanding season.

There is a difference. If Kane hadn't happened, there was enough variance in strategies to keep things interesting. Some managers will have sold Austin as fixtures worsened due to QPR struggling, and punted on another 6m striker. With Kane being in the Spurs side, strikers around his price point were playing for worse teams, while the regular strikers for Top 6 teams all cost 2m+ more. He was simply too great a bargain to transfer out for the majority of last season.

What I think FPL Towers are trying to achieve is that fine balance of, "If you want Aguero, Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, etc., then you're going to need to compromise elsewhere". I think this can be accomplished simply by having a minimum price per position, per team. This could be based on where teams finished in the league the previous season (or combination of seasons), or even total goals scored and conceded.

For instance, the cheapest defender would be determined on a sliding scale from most CS (most expensive) to fewest CS (least expensive). Regular starters could be priced 0.5m more expensive and attacking defenders a further 0.5m more.

On the attacking front, the minimum price would be determined by the number of goals the team as a whole score. I think FPL largely have this right with the likes of Arsenal and Man City - the cheapest striker is usually around the 7.5m - 8m mark.

The aim here is to make more like-for-like replacements, so managers punt on different players based on form/fixtures and not solely on price.

Interesting and related comments here, TS - I put forward an idea of fewer FTs to reduce the 'template' - but got a few surprising (to me) responses who didn't see the issue with their being a template.

Ultimately I concede that fewer FTs is not the way to go - but nevertheless there are interesting points raised here.

Cheers mate, will take a look!

I think people confuse template teams resulting from form players, and template teams as a result of 'bargain' players. The former is perfectly fine and to be expected - and will change throughout a season, while the latter remains template because of a ridiculously cheap player at a top club getting lots of pitch time (Bellerin, Kane, etc.).

I wish I'd been around for that discussion!

It amazes me how people don't think template is a problem. It's not a problem if you're no.1 in the world and can pick all the big hitters because Kane and Austin keep delivering!

It's all very well saying pick a different team, but if Kane was 8m, then your differential might well be going with Ramsey instead of Silva, rather than being able to afford both.

Of course - but as was correctly pointed out, if you get it right and get on early then you don't have to be taking the risks in order to catch up - and if you get it wrong early you shouldn't be gifted an easy way back.

Well it isn't - and shouldn't be - but it is riskier to go against the grain later on as more people will be on board the template so, if you get your risk wrong, there's a lot more players around you who can harm your OR. But there are some (Ruth NZ is a prime example of this) who see this as an opportunity to attack rather than be defensive - and he's right.

                Agree 100%.

In the last 8 GW's or so, you can take a gamble and trust the fixtures of a lower priced or alternative player to out-perform the template players.

I'd just like to see more of these choices forced on us earlier by better pricing. It would practically eliminate defensive blocking tactics from being effective. We may even have an FPL winner that takes transfer hits ๐Ÿ˜€

It's a bit like first man to build his castle wins.

            Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Siggy
            Aguero, Kane, Austin

All it would've taken is for Kane to have a reasonable starting price and you'd have to lose a big hitter. That would mean a chance of you not having the right big hitter and someone else gaining ground.

the above template does not last through the entire season and some options are not always the best even when they are template.

for example, this template ignores guys like mane, costa, fab, downing, giroud etc..and these players provide good option at various parts of season.

its about getting on fast from 1 template to another..or even be the one getting in front of the template.

While I agree that the most points are to be gained by varying your team, that is not how Simon March and co. win FPL.

For every player in the mid-priced bracket that does well, there may be 3 or 4 that fail, or you jump on them at the wrong time. The winners of FPL remain patient and stick with the players in their 'template'. Because those players do well, they reach the top 1k in the early weeks of the season and can stay there as other people have to take risks.

It becomes possible to stay there because they have identified budget options which perform far better than their price (such as Kane and Austin). They then have the pick of the highest scoring midfielders and defenders in the game.

Fantasy is obviously about finding the balance. I think the way its done now is fine. Your Aguero's and Costa's cost a ton of money. Your boyd's and Wanyama's dont.

The fun part of fantasy for me is finding the Kane's every year. This year I found him earlier. He was scoring for fun in the cup and got his chance in the league and I put him straight in and it led me to a 1k finish.

I dont think we need to change anything. The top teams have expensive defenders, the newly promoted teams dont. The top midfielders in the game are 9+ and the average ones are 7ish+ .. I think we have a great balance as is.

Wouldn't you find the game more challenging if the prices were exaggerated? What if Hazard and Aguero were 20m? Wouldn't there be more skill in picking the moments to own these players in a season?

No-one will like this because they treat FPL like Match Attax or Panini stickers - they want to collect all the best players.

Whether we like it or not, FPL look to be heading that way by stabilising the dramatic price rises and trying to make it more of a level playing field.

Maybe they could be priced a little higher. The fact my midfield on the last day was Sanchez, Silva, Cazorla and Mata is abit OTT. Lukaku, Aguero and Beneteke up front.

Another idea is if they kept the 100m budget but each player had a tier. Tier 3 players are the cheapest players, Tier 2 players are our average players of 6-8m and then Tier 1 players are the best premium players.

          Lets say,

          Tier 3 - unlimited (4.0m to 5.0m)
          Tier 2 - 6 players (5.0m to 8.m)
          Tier 1 - 4 players (8.0m to 13m)

But like I said, I like the current system I think its fine.

If this was a board game, the mechanism would be considered broken. How can you catch someone that is leading if they have all the best players?

FPL must get the pricing right so that skill in evaluating form and fixtures is rewarded by winning the game.

just one point to consider..if reserve players from big teams are priced highly and then sent on loan/sold to bottom table teams..would it kill the players as a fantasy option?

from what i see kane does not really have much chance for a breakthrough when last season started, and it proves that he only start playing in nov..thus he is not really wrongly priced imo.

what i am concern is whether the likes of austin is priced too lowly. Yes they are from promotion teams, but some players actually have a very decent goalscoring record as we see from austin, ings, lambert etc. a cheap 6m wilson/deeney could be severely underpriced.

Yes, very good point. A bit part player leaving a top side to join a lower table team after the prices have been set, means practically no-one transfers them in. It's even worse when it is the other way around.

Would be great if FPL adjusted a player's price based on the price range for that team.

I read the piece from Skysports they bring up a good point about Darmain being 6ft, a tall player which is what United needed. Clyne standing at 5"7 was probably why united didnt go for him.

He has put some great performances in an Italy shirt, that's for sure!

6ft is hardly a giant but I agree that they need some size in that team. Apparently Schneiderlin isnt even 6ft, I always thought he was much taller than that

It is my view the team structure is more key than the individual in defence. Hence the fees paid for defenders than more attack minded players.
If Terry and co did not have quality in front of them, they would look decidedly average.
Plenty of defensive fish in the sea.
It takes a quality coach to spot them and get them to gel with the team.

    From Sky

Manchester United have agreed a fee with Torino for Italian international right-back Matteo Darmian, according to Sky Italia sources.

Talks between the clubs have been ongoing and, after rejecting United’s first two bids, Torino have agreed to sell their prized defender for £12.7m (€18m).

Darmian is a versatile defender who is capable of playing in either full-back spot, though his favoured position is on the right, but also has experience at centre-half and at 6ft tall offers a strong aerial presence.

Not sure he will leave. But, as it stands, if he were to leave and they had Rooney, Wilson and Hernandez (seeing as he's not gone yet) plus Depay, though I'm not convinced he can play up top.

I think they would need a new striker, I would like one, but in terms of importance I really feel a new CB and CDM are massive for the team.

No. De Gea was the best, then Young, then Rooney. Towards the end of the season Herrera was right up there too. Fellaini kicked on last year but to say he was our best player is abit OTT.

Carrick was brilliant when he played but he was injured most of the season so you cant count him.

          1. Eze Really?
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 10 months ago

Maybe De Gea, but you can't take anything away from Carrick and Fellaini. A lot of neutrals would say the same as me. When Carrick played you looked a reasonable team. When Fellaini played you looked more likely to score.

            1. Quinny___
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 10 months ago

We always look much better with Carrick in the team for sure! But my point is you cant really say he was our best player last year considering how much he played.

More likely to score with Fellaini? I would say we look more solid with Fellaini. He was getting the pressure off the defence holding it up and just using his muscle around the pitch in general. But he offered a different kind of threat for sure when he played. Youngs crosses into him and his heading was a tactic LVG liked quite a bit lol

I wasn't climbing on United's case as a lot do; I was making a point of a couple of players not bought by LVG have an influential part to play. Yes Carrick played a few games last year and regardless of the games he played was one of the most influential. The post was based on the initial post where he is absent from the side. I think both played a massive part in you getting 4th spot.

Ah there you are. I never got round to replying to your shots in the box table. I was saying its a bad table, because in more games than not, Spurs scored more than they conceded. Which means their attacking strength has to be greater than their defensive weakness. Therefore your table must be skewed by something, maybe Spurs were more clinical with their chances and didn't take hopeless shots, and maybe opposition took hopeless shots against them?

Ladies and gentleman, can we talk about daily fantasy football?

I've been a full time poker player for the last 7 years and I've become obsessed with FPL over the last 2. I hear stories about many former poker players (nearly all American) who are now making their income from Daily Fantasy Sports.

I know the popularity of DFS has sky-rocketed in the US in recent years, mainly due to them not being able to actually gamble of sports and DFS being a loophole.

I did decent last season in FPL (114 OR) and am looking to discuss the possibilities of making some side income from daily fantasy football. Anyone with prior experience fancy having a chat about it? I feel like there may be a decent opportunity here but would be starting from scratch with regards DFS knowledge.

Yes sir, so I know there is money to be made by playing "games" online!

Seems like this isn't the place to ask though, either people are keeping their cards close to their chest or no one is interested enough in DFS.

Honestly don't think there is a massive market for it in the UK, you've got mondogoal and playon but they're nowhere near the size of the US sites (draftkings etc). As you alluded to, a large reason why they are so popular in the US is the ban on online poker, but even draftkings has not yet reached profitability so it's a tricky market.

Out of interest do you just play poker online or do you play live tournaments as well?

Might be mobile only - there are new Google search rules that a site to be included in a search has to be mobile friendly - (i/e large text, easy UI etc.) which the FPL site is definitely not.

Also Bertrand is orange flagged...it's funny how they are keeping up with injuries...

Maybe just a database thing so when they move over to new season it just carries the current data for things like injuries?

I guess it's easier to keep up than run through them all once the new page is set up.

SPORT1 | ManUnited offers €82m for Thomas #Müller. There were talks between Bayern CEO #Rummenigge and executive vice-chairman Ed #Woodward.

Don't know how legit but it roughly translates to 60 million ..we definitely need a striker.

There has been news of a bust up between muller and pep as per bold..could be nothing..could also be everything..

Well united are going to need to sign a Striker. Rooney and a youngster Wilson isnt enough with RVP likely to leave.

You can see the obvious links between united and Muller. We have the money, we have the wages and he's worked under LVG someone who he's gone on record saying was one of the best coaches hes had.

All Germans strive to play for Bayern and when they are there its hard to get them away. Unless Muller has a burning desire to explore a new club a new challenge, which is something alot of players like to do, it will be hard to get him,

One of the best in the world for sure, no doubt about that.

    Just found this ๐Ÿ˜†

The defender Matteo Darmian is no longer a viable option for United following a scathing report from Manchester Utd chief scout Jim Lawlor.

Having watched Darmian in action for his country, the scout reportedly told Van Gaal: "He is no better than the players we currently have, I don't see any room for improvement."

Darmian would be a great signing if it does happen - every time I've seen him he's been excellent, especially for Italy. I remember a couple of years ago he had some great tackling stats as well.

Much cheaper than the Coleman option as well. Will be interesting to see how he settles into the PL but I think he will be able to adapt to LVG's philosophy due to his extremely high stamina (one of the reasons LVG likes Valencia is his ability to get up and down the pitch very quickly/consistently).

Will be 6m on FPL though considering his goal/assist record (assuming others like Smalling are 5.5).
