Sunderland kick-started their summer spending spree last Wednesday with the acquisition of centre-half Sebastian Coates from Liverpool. Having spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, the 24-year-old has made his switch permanent, signing a four-year contract for a fee believed to be around the ยฃ2 million mark.

The Black Cats sporting director Lee Congerton hailed the playerโ€™s acquisition and reckons Coatesโ€™ previous year with the club will ensure he slots in seamlessly:

“Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick [Advocaat] last season and we are delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis. He has Barclays Premier League experience, which is important and, after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly.”

Coates, meanwhile, admitted that Dick Advocaatโ€™s decision to stay at Sunderland, having previously quit the post, proved pivotal in persuading him to sign up:

“I think it was 90%, because he gave me confidence last year when he came [to the club] and for me it was very important to play and to be involved in the team. When the manager came [back], it was very important for me to be here. He gives the players confidence, the team, and the supporters. When he came we were not in a good moment, so he gave everyone confidence. He trusted in the team, that we could get safe and that was important. Iโ€™m really happy to be here. It is a pleasure for me to come back again. I will try to do my best this season and to help the team.”

The History

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Coates joined top-flight outfit Nacional from the age of 11, where he progressed through the youth set-up and assumed the role of captain at every level. Coates earned his first senior cap during the 2008/09 season, before spending the subsequent two campaigns as a starter in central defence, tallying career stats of five goals and seven assists across 78 outings.

In the summer of 2011, Coates made the switch across the Atlantic to Liverpool. The Uruguay international failed to muscle his way into first-team contention, mustering just 12 league appearances throughout his three seasons at Anfield. Coates suffered a knee injury in an international friendly prior to the start of the 2013/14 campaign, which ruled him out for the majority of the season. A loan move back to Nacional in the latter stages saw him chalk up five appearances in South America.

In the dying embers of the 2014 summer transfer window, Coates was shipped out to Sunderland on a season-long loan deal, teaming up with fellow-Uruguayan Guy Poyet. Coates saw limited involvement while Poyet was at the helm, however, and managed a mere three starts until his compatriotโ€™s sacking in mid-March. Under Dick Advocaatโ€™s stewardship, Coates started all of the Black Catsโ€™ final six fixtures, with the Wearside club narrowly avoiding relegation by virtue of a five-match unbeaten streak from Gameweek 34.

After earning 10 caps for the Uruguay U20s, Coates registered his first start for the full team in the 2011 Copa America. Los Charrรบas went on to scoop the trophy that year, with Coates named as the Young Player of the tournament. More recently, the six foot five inches centre-back clocked just two minutes in the 2014 World Cup, while he featured in a 1-1 draw to Paraguay in the 2015 Copa America. In all, Coates has recorded one goal in 17 appearances for Uruguay.

The Prospects

Having earned starts in the final six Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Coates will be hopeful of ousting Wes Brown from the starting XI to partner John Oโ€™Shea in the heart of Advocaatโ€™s defence for the season ahead.

Although the Uruguayanโ€™s improved pitch time was due to Brown sustaining another injury, itโ€™s fair to say his impact over those final few matches, in which the Wearsiders secured their safety, was vital for the Black Cats. Between Gameweek 34 and 37, Sunderland were breached on just two occasions in five matches and gave up the fewest big chances (five) of any side in the league before their 3-1 loss to Chelsea on the final day of the season.

In terms of Sunderland’s defensive prospects, Patrick van Aanholt looks set to remain the prime route into their rearguard. The former Chelsea left-back tallied just 84 points last term โ€“ having sat out 10 matches in the middle of the season through injury โ€“ which should ensure that his value doesn’t increase beyond the 4.5 mark. Van Aanholt notched 17 more attempts on goal (30) than any other Sunderland backline option and averaged a shot every 81.2 minutes, which was fourth amongst defenders with 1000+ minutes. Furthermore, Van Aanholt crafted 25 more chances (35) than the next best among their back line and averaged a key pass every 69.6 minutes, which was third for defenders with a minimum of 1000 minutes in 2014/15.

If Coates is afforded a run in the side, however, his underlying stats paint a promising picture. Only two Sunderland defenders attempted more efforts than the former Reds recruit (seven), even though he clocked a paltry 872 minutes. In comparison, O’Shea (seven) and Brown (four) achieved their totals while being afforded 3448 and 2101 minutes of pitch time, respectively, suggesting that Coatesโ€™ aerial ability in the opposition box could be a real weapon for Advocaatโ€™s outfit.

Elsewhere in the Sunderland backline, Costel Pantilimon โ€“ who amassed 123 points in 28 appearances over the previous campaign โ€“ is sure to attract investment from managers looking to source a cheap keeper. Despite finishing just two places above the relegation berths, Sunderland registered as many clean sheets as Arsenal (13) and only one fewer than Manchester City. Furthermore, only two sides (West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool) carded more clean sheets away from home than the Wearsiders, illustrating their proficiency at shutting up shop on the road. Pantilimonโ€™s penchant for picking up save points looks key here โ€“ he earned at least one save point in 18 of his 28 appearances and averaged 4.4 points per game.

Looking at the fixtures, Sunderland enjoy a highly favourable start to the new season which is sure to earn Fantasy managersโ€™ attention. Given that they face just two of last seasonโ€™s top seven in the opening 11 Gameweeks (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou, mum, WHM, wba, NEW, eve), Advocaatโ€™s backline certainly look worthy of our investment in the opening few months as the Dutchman looks to build momentum and avoid another relegation scrap.

Post 2000 counts out Redgrave/Pinsent then. Probably between Hoy, Wiggins and Ainslie. Murray would be up there ever with 'only' two majors given the era he's playing in. McIlroy's career is still in its infancy in golfing terms.

Despite injuries, Wilkinson would still be high on any list considering his achievements (won RWC,world player of the year, 2x winning captain in Europe).

Globally would be Federer, Bolt, Nadal, Messi and Woods in that order I'd say.

Impossible to quantify really. Someone like Ronnie O'Sullivan is as talented, in his own sport, as Messi/Federer/Woods, but snooker isn't as widely respected or acknowledged. Same with Phil Taylor.

Probably Hoy or Wiggins will be the most widely given answer, but I'm not a fan of cycling, so from a personal perspective it's O'Sullivan. On his day, the gap between him and everyone else is astonishing, I've seen him play snooker that I never even imagined possible.

I'm firmly stuck as one of those who can't quite consider snooker (or darts) a sport. Not wishing to belittle how good he is, or the fact that for many it is every bit a sport (i actually like snooker and darts) it just doesn't really sit as one for me.

          • 13 Years

Exactly, that's why it's hard to quantify. It's a personal preference: I have played a lot of snooker and darts, and know just how difficult they are.

I think I'd say that Taylor and O'Sullivan do things never seen before in their fields. As great as, for instance, Andy Murray is, you can't say the same about him. I mean, this from O'Sullivan aged 21 (albeit pre-millennium):

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McThDshEgU0

I can't even begin to explain how mind-boggling that is.

It is 100% necessary, exactly because some of the top ones do it, and then those who want to compete with them, they have to do it too. You can just gain such an immense advantage with doping in that sport.

I'm a long time cycling fan and amateur cyclist myself, but have years since, even before Armstrong finally got busted, come to the inevitable conclusion that every cyclist who has won something of international significance in last 20 odd years has been doped. And everybody who has finished 2nd, 3rd or 4th as well. Maybe there are few who have made the top 10 of Tour or Giro without doping, or even top5 after disqualification of the top cyclists, but they have not competed for the win.

And most of them before 20 years ago as well. We even have proof for most of them, and for those (in last 20 years) for whom we have no absolute proof, the weight of evidence suggests that almost certainly they have been doped too.

Every single cyclist, when moving to a bigger team and starting to win competitions, has started to produce anomalous results and a lot of signs of doping.

As reported in that article you posted as well, this applies completely to Wiggins, who also spoke firmly _against_ ANTI-doping work after he got himself to the top. BS about it being an ancient problem and his results getting better with that. It's not just that his relative results are better. His individual results are exactly similar to those of the earlier dopers.

Darmian as a right wing back- 7.07 ๐Ÿ˜‰

According to the whoscored positions, it looks like he didn't play right back at all last season. It's a very different position, and probably account for the greater attacking threat.

Either way, I think it's so close that Pool and Man U fans can just leave it now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Not that I agree with that logic but all 4 can offer CL football so it might come down more to playing time and contract offer. Still, I think Chelsea mostly have the pick of the lot.

i just don't see it like that. Utd were able to sign decent players last summer with no european football on offer. Money is a big factor when signing players but not necessarily the determining factor

And that's true but that's a consistency remark more than anything. United had fallen out of a CL spot for one season, so the ones they signed must have had some faith that they might get back there. Money important as well, of course. And I know what you mean, it isn't necessarily the determining factor, but every day there is evidence against that. You have players ditching loyal fan bases for money left, right and centre. Or players who could still play at a high level settling for much lower in the MLS or Turkey or elsewhere. Believe me, IE, I really do prefer players who value things above a pay rise (on their already ludicrous earnings) but they are becoming scarce.

Regarding the Clyne situation, I genuinely don't believe United were in discussions though I would have liked it. But he may well have been a case where he wanted to go to Pool instead regardless, could have been a fan, I know he's very friendly with a lot of players there etc.

well i'm not dismissing the idea that had Utd made an offer, he would have signed for them, but when i see Utd fans using terms like ' liverpool would have no chance ' it reeks of arrogance as if it's fact

utd has the reputation to get players even when they are without european football for a season..and LVG arrival might have boosted the confidence of incoming players. If utd falls behind the pack for 3-4 seasons then its where the problem comes.

and yes they sign decent players..but think of this..in EPL utd is probably the best club that can afford high wages for wantaway players with big reputation like ADM. if clubs like chelsea want ADM then utd might not have a chance.

As for players like shaw, blind rojo etc they are better off in utd then in the top 3 EPL clubs where they might not be automatic starters

I cannot agree more with this and it is the crux of my arguments. It is the same reason I said Pool needed to get CL again this season, the consistency is important.

We'd have got more for Clyne if United were serious - a bit of competition would have spurred one into matching the asking price and might have encouraged us to wait longer.

Nope Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd and City are on a different level to liverpool. Liverpool could only attract players like Lambert etc when they qualified for CL. World class players don't want to play for liverpool.

The only way liverpool can sign decent players is if the other big clubs give up interest in that player. Firminho for example. Otherwise they end up signing players like Lambert and Ings.

Yeah, Liverpool are miles away from that calibre of signing right now. And if you say it was only about the money, we'll just use what Internal Error posted about Clyne, saying not all footballers think about the money. And if we go with Berbinho's fairytale theory that Clyne preferred Liverpool because he was best friends with Lallana and Henderson, we can just say Di Maria was best friends with Rojo.

If you go on gravatar.com to get your grav, it does a sizing process. So the pic can be as big or small as you like, but it will have to fit in the little square. You'll see if you check the website. ๐Ÿ™‚

To all Liverpool and Man United fans - Liverpool were better in the 70's and 80's, then United were better in the 90's and 00's. Now neither of you are very good. Get over it and stop all the petty, pointless 'debates' on here.

In the last 6 seasons (2009/2010 - 2014/2015) United have won the PL twice, the same as City and Chelsea.

I will not argue they have declined in the last two seasons, and that they need a lot of work. From a CL perspective, they have declined, but then so have most PL teams.

I'd imagine so. He's an actual full-back and not injury prone. Fairly reasonable fee so has surely come to be 1st choice and fill the RB void long-term. But obviously this doesn't account for how he adapts which we won't know.

Should be a lot more crashes than yesterday but at a fraction of the speed. This stage was made for Cancellara, such a shame he won't be taking part. I think cyclists are the hardest of all sportsmen, despite their build. Cancellara finished the stage with 2 fractured vertebrae.

That's the advantage he's himself over the first three day. Last last thing he need is a Frank Schleke type fall.

He is the only rider who has completed the Paris Roubaix out of the main contenders btw.

Yeah I saw that. This stage is set up for protection for the main contenders. Greg LeMond saying that Team Sky are best set to protect their team leader over their rivals. If the rain comes I would expect a domestic to win the stage.

They tried that last year, its almost impossible to do so. Froome was well protected but skidded, fell off and broke his wrist and was out of the tournament.

That's the danger today for all of them in the rain.

Italy/Torino RB and yes he is good - tall as well so may go up for corners in addition to attacking from full-back.

If Man Utd defenders are priced around 5.5 then he might be 6 based on 5g 4a last season and only 2 yellow cards.
