Having already acquired Sebastian Coates from Liverpool, Sunderland continued to strengthen in defensive areas with the acquisition of Celtic right-back Adam Matthews on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site, the 23-year-old was delighted to team up with the Black Cats:

“It’s been very exciting. It happened really quickly which has been a bit of a shock. Playing in the Barclays Premier League and in front of great fans and in a big stadium is something I’m looking forward to. Obviously, at Celtic I played in front of massive crowds and I’m sure they’ll be just as good if not better here so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The History

Born in Wales, Matthews broke his arm during a trial with Swansea City only to discover that their youth set-up had filled their quota by the time he’d recovered. He turned instead to rivals Cardiff City, joining their academy at the age of eight.

The defender penned a professional contract with the Bluebirds in 2009, before making his senior debut in a 1-1 draw against Blackpool at the start of the 2009/10 Championship season. Injuries elsewhere in the squad afforded the young right-back a couple of starts, with his performances in those fixtures convincing manager Dave Jones to select him on a regular basis. Such was his impressive emergence, Matthews courted interest from Manchester United and was named as the Football League Apprentice of the Year.

Kevin McNaughton reclaimed his starting berth the following season, restricting Matthews to just two starts. Nonetheless, the Wales international earned a move to Celtic in the summer of 2011 and went on to record 27 appearances in his debut campaign for the Hoops. Despite missing 11 matches through injury the following season, Matthews tallied an eye-catching two goals and eight assists in just 22 appearances. He continued to exhibit a propensity for attacking returns in a further two injury-hit seasons, registering two goals and 12 assists in 52 appearances across the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns.

Matthews received a handful of caps for the Wales U17, U19 and U21 outfits, before making his senior debut against Scotland in May 2011. He’s made a further 11 appearances for the Dragons since that date but has yet to register a goal.

The Prospects

Matthews’ arrival on Wearside places question marks over the pitch time of Billy Jones for the Black Cats. Having seen off the challenge of Anthony Reveillere, Jones started each of the final eight matches in 2014/15 at right-back, but the former Baggies defender now faces strong competition for a regular start in 2015/16.

Matthews may take his time to settle, though, after conceding that Dick Advocaat is determined to improve the defensive aspect of his game:

“He (Advocaat) just said ‘we’ve been watching you for a while, I like what I see but you’ve got to work on a few things and hopefully I can make you a better player’. I’m sure he’ll be able to do that and with the players here I can only improve. I’m very excited to just get started. I like to attack but the manager has already told me I need to work on my defending so I’ll try my best to do that. I like to get on the ball, I like to get forward and hopefully score a few goals.”

Priced at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Matthews could definitely be one to watch if he can stay injury-free and edge ahead of Jones in the pecking order. The former Celtic defender tallied a whopping 20 assists in the past three seasons, despite clocking just 5,285 minutes of pitch time – to put that into context, the rampaging Leighton Baines tops the assists charts (19) for Premier League defenders across the last three campaigns, yet he needed 4,244 more minutes to achieve that total.

Matthews is also versatile enough to operate on the right flank, though he’s likely to rely on minutes as a member of Advocaat’s back-four over the coming campaign. Certainly his kind price – compared to Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt at 5.0 apiece – will give Fantasy managers food for thought as we eye up a route into a defence that managed 13 clean sheets (six home, seven away) last season, the same number as Arsenal.

Granted, Van Aanholt ranked fourth amongst defenders in terms of shots (30) and fourth for key passes (35) in 2014/15 and is nailed on by comparison, whilst Pantilimon (who earned 4.4 points per appearance last time out) is set to benefit from a change to the BPS scoring, which should boost his chances of Bonus Points through saved shots. Both have the potential to still prove better value for money.

For now, those who are looking to spend only 4.5 on the Black Cats’ backline may be best opting for fellow new boy Coates or skipper John O’Shea. Coates started each of the last six alongside the Irishman last season and is favourite to get the nod ahead of the injury-plagued Wes Brown. Furthermore, a BPS change on clearances, blocks and interceptions should prove beneficial to centre-halves’ chances of earning Bonus.

Looking at the season ticker, the Black Cats’ schedule is rated second most favourable over the opening ten Gameweeks. With just two clashes against last term’s top seven over that period (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou, mun, WHM, wba, NEW), there’s every chance they could begin the campaign strongly.

Hey guys! Would ya take a look at this draft and any comments are greatly appreciated !

    Schmeichel - Fabianski
    Cedric - Richards - O'Shea - Toby - Reid
    Bentaleb - Ritchie - Hazard - Yaya - Mane
    Costa - Benteke - Sakho

2 Million in the bank Aguero for Costa straight swap !
Also, I plan to take out Benteke and Yaya and bring in Alexis and Deeney!

I am aware that no big hitters in defence but it's only because it strengthens my team everywhere else in the pitch. Also, the 7 DEF + GK's are greatly rotational so I am not TOO worried about the defence.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sadio Mane – an average of 204.3 minutes per goal was second only to Alexis Sanchez amongst midfielders last time around. Having cemented a regular role under Ronald Koeman towards the end of 2014/15, Mane has the potential to make a mockery of his 8.0 price tag – as evidenced by a stunning 23-point haul against Aston Villa in Gameweek 37, he’s more than capable of delivering explosive returns for Fantasy managers. - FPL

He is probably the last player I'd take off from my team. Thanks though.

I was thinking about Reid or Tomkins but l wasn't sure which one. Why Reid if you don't mind me asking?

Forget about Tomkins mate, Ogbonna and Reid will definitely start. However, I would choose Reid over Ogbonna because he is already established there. Ogbonna is new to the PL. As for Tomkins, he is going to be a benchwarmer. Also, Reid is a very dangerous player on corner, even though statistics don't really show that, this could be his season.

I'm running both. Augero is a must have at all costs. If he can avoid injuries he may Crack the 30 goal mark. Its easier to have him from the beginning than back peddle trying to get him in later. He's been in form in Copa and city need him from day 1 so can't see him not playing. Costa could also get up there in that goal range if can also avoid injury. Only way I will avoid Costa is if United or arsenal sign a world class striker. Or if tekkers ends up at Liverpool.

the way he finished last season, the way arsenal finished last season, the chance Alexis will probably not be included for a few weeks, the fact wally is coming off a roper pre-season.

He more than worth his 9m. If he nails a spot and stays fit we are talking about a 200pt player.

Depay is a greater risk - new team, team going through a period of readjustment, new league, new country (although it an easy switch as far as change of country goes)

Don't worry I know this sounds crazy, but I'm already pretty settled on this team and barring any really great transfers/injuries i'm 90% certain I'll be rolling with this GW1.

    Lloris / Butland
    Cahill - Mertesacker - Ward / Matthews / Coloccini
    Walcott - Depay - Eriksen - Ritchie - Wanyama
    Rooney - Costa - Sakho
    £1.0m ITB

Only players that may change are:
Matthews - for the reasons highlighted in this article, probably change to Coates.
Eriksen - love the fixtures, but Spurs aren't convincing, maybe to a Liverpool MID.
Sakho - may swap to Deeney.

I love my keeper rotation, and if Lloris does move to United, it'll be even better!
the CPL/SUN/NEW 3 way rotation looks great.
Yes no Hazard or Aguero but the £1.0m ITB allows me to easily upgrade if need be.

Same front 3 here. That would look a lot nicer imo if you had Ozil and Fabregas instead of Walcott and Depay.

perhaps but I think Walcott if he can keep 100% fit, will be on a point level near to Hazard. Fabregas I would pick but I wanted to keep my options open, the way it is atm depending on who's more important between Hazard & Aguero, it gives me more options and way's to get it without reducing team coverage.

Cahill is the least guaranteed time in the Chelsea defense. Either pay 0.5 more for Ivan/Terry or less for Azpi. Eriksen is meh. Wouldn't trust LLoris either as Spurs defense isn't reliable.

    RMT please

    Panti 4.0
Ivan Cedric Morgan Oshea (not sold on him tbh) Francis
    Hazard Depay Ramsey Adam Anya
    Costa Benteke Sakho

What I am still tinkering with is:
    A) Sakho and Adam/Richie (Currently on Adam)
    B) Wilson and 7.5 mid (Siggy,Milner/Hendo/Chadli/Payet/Other)

    Help appreciated 🙂

I imagine it's like the Wildcard of old where you could click it then cancel it again before actually confirming it.

Wonder what happens when you click one then click confirm team, is that when it's finalised?

Would love to find 1 million to upgrade Ritchie to Henderson, don't want to touch none of the big hitters, think it's worth messing up the nicely organised defence to do so, something like drop Goalies for Schmeichel and Hamer and downgrade Morgan to a 4.0 ?

I know it's early, but when does the Team News section come out? I'm interested in seeing early projected line-ups for teams, and think it would be helpful to have lineup questions (answers) all compiled in one space.

Is there a projected date for this to come out? (or am I embarrassingly missing it somewhere?)
