Following the signings of defenders Sebastian Coates and Adam Matthews, Sunderland made Dutch international attacker Jeremain Lens their third new addition of the summer transfer window last week. The 27-year-old arrives on Wearside from Dynamo Kiev on four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £8 million.

After completing his move to the Black Cats, Lens admitted that the chance to reunite with compatriot Dick Advocaat once again proved too good to turn down:

“I know Dick Advocaat very well from my time in Alkmaar and PSV. It will be the third time I’ve worked with Dick and at PSV I reached my best goalscoring season – 15 in the league – so I hope I will do the same now and score even more. Everybody knows he is a very good head coach and he also gets the best out of the players, and in my personal opinion he is a good coach for me as well because he can reach the qualities I have and make everything come out so I hope it will happen again.”

THE HISTORY

Lens played youth football for Spartaan, FC Omniworld, Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, before making his professional debut for the latter during the 2005/06 campaign.

After failing to score in 14 outings for the Cheese Farmers, he was sent out on loan to NEC in 2007/08, where he produced 13 goals and five assists in 37 league and play-off appearances. Returning to AZ the following year, he was restricted to just eight league matches (one goal, one assist) after undergoing foot surgery. The 2009/10 campaign was far more successful, with Lens’ 12 goals and eight assists from 32 matches earning him a move to PSV Eindhoven.

The pacey attacker would spend three seasons at PSV, racking up 34 goals and 37 assists in 96 league appearances before joining Dynamo Kiev in the summer of 2013. Lens was less prolific in the Ukraine, scoring 10 times and chipping in with 15 assists in 49 outings, although he was part of a successful league and cup double last season.

After narrowly missing out on selection for Holland’s 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup, Lens had to wait until August 2010 to make his international debut, although he did find the back of the net in a 1-1 draw against Ukraine. He was a regular member of the Dutch squad under Louis van Gaal, and made four appearances during the 2014 World Cup, although he only started once. Lens has made 30 appearances for Holland, scoring eight goals.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the outlay, it’s fair to say that Lens will be a key player for the Black Cats in the season ahead as he looks to reproduce his best form under Advocaat.

The Dutchman’s arrival is clearly designed to improve on the meagre 31 strikes that left the Wearsiders just three points clear of the drop zone in 2014/15. Whilst Advocaat acknowledged his compatriot’s versatility, the Black Cats boss admitted that Lens’ arrival should see him feature out wide in a three-man frontline:

“We have to think about whether we will stick with the 4-3-3. But Lens is not really a player for a 4-4-2. He can go in between the lines and likes going past his man. We don’t have that with (Connor) Wickham. Connor works his socks off, but he doesn’t go past players, he’s a different type of player. Lens is one who likes to chase players. He can play left and right. He can even play as a striker, sometime I used him like that at PSV. But left or right is his best position because he is always a threat there. We haven’t had that.”

With Lens looking nailed-on, then, and adding a much-needed injection of trickery and pace, it looks like Emmanuel Giaccherini, Adam Johnson, Will Buckley and Connor Wickham will compete for the other wide role, though Wickham could be utilised through the middle, where he would vie with Jermain Defoe, Steven Fletcher and Danny Graham for the lone striker role.

As mentioned above, Lens’ creativity will also be vital for the Wearsiders, having served up at least ten assists in four of his last five seasons. Last term, left-back Patrick van Aanholt led the way for assists (five) at the Stadium of Light club, with the Black Cats midfield managing just 15 assists between them.

Given his pedigree – and the possibility of playing as a second striker – it’s no real surprise that Lens has been handed a price tag of 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), making him the most expensive Sunderland player in the game. That places him alongside the likes of Crystal Palace pair Yannick Bolasie and Yohan Cabaye, and with the Eagles a much more attack-minded outfit following the appointment of Alan Pardew, Fantasy managers may take some persuading to invest in Lens until there is some evidence of improvement from Sunderland in the final third.

Certainly, the opening schedule has smiled kindly on the Wearsiders and sees Advocaat’s side face only two of last season’s top seven in the first ten Gameweeks. With clashes against Leicester, Norwich, Villa, Bournemouth, West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle over that period, we should get a fair idea of Lens’ potential in the tricky mid-price bracket, though for now, many will feel the Black Cats’ defence – which served up 13 shut-outs in 2014/15 – may be the better value option to begin with.

Hi Guys, after seeing some of the great Hot Topics and comments on these boards, I have rejigged my team and would like to know your thoughts:

    Ruddy / Fabianski

Ivan Cedric Huth / Dawson (Targett)

    Walcott Siggy Fabregas Ritchie (Wanyama)

    Aguero Rooney Deeney

I have 0 ITB but would like to bring in Sanchez when he is fully fit, so may well downgrade Ivan and Huth to do that.
Plan on keeping Fabregas for the first half of the season then getting Hazard in but will play that by ear depending on both players' form.

    All responses are appreciated, thanks.

In truth your midfield is still weak but hendo/milner OR mane instead of siggy may help - siggy has looked poor for a while now

Even then ritchie as your 4th midfielder is still weak - last year 10 out of the 15 players that scored over 150 pts were midfielders. People with 4 or even 5 big-hitting mids will knock your rank down. If you really want to keep your attackers, look to 0.5M downgrades in defence and GK to improve ritchie

You don't need to have a 5M goalkeeper and 4.5M - that's too much money pointlessly spent

Thanks for your comments - could you recommend a pair of 4.5 rotating goalies with genuine clean sheet potential; most of them seem poor when it comes to this area and people are depending more on them making saves than getting CSs.

I went with Siggy because he's been fairly consistent in his seasons at Swansea although I do see your point and think that for 7.5m he might be overpriced.

I could also go with Kane over Rooney to save another £1m, which could mean that I could bring in another big hitting midfielder such as Silva.

yup i agree with what you've said there. In terms of rotating GK i've been considering Butland and schmeichel personally - each week there's a favourable fixture for one of them at least

And i would really recommend kane over rooney

if you are going to go for Rooney and Aguero I would suggest having Ivan and all 4.5 defenders.

It is a bit of a punt I agree but I feel I need to have Cedric in there to take advantage of the Saints' CS potential. Dawson could well be downgraded but I am yet to find another 4.5m defender I am confident will get lots of clean sheets.

Genuine question - Why do people think Rooney is suddenly going to be amazing this season? Just because he's playing up front? He's most likely lost pens and he wasn't very good when he actually played up front last season, especially in the 4-3-3 near the end.

FYI - I'm not bashing him as I'm also considering him as an option but I have quite a few reservations - can't help but think Giroud/Kane are better options.

Still has a fairly good goal record even in recent years playing OOP etc.

I'm hopeful that as the number one striker he can push on and get back to the 20+ goals, along with better service from the midfield now. It's not a guarantee but I'm willing to back him.

As a United fan yourself, do you not think he has seriously regressed since 2011-12 - in combination with his lack of pens now and lack of discipline in keeping his position as the #9 (even when he's deployed there), do you think he'll be worth a £10.5m price? No doubt he will get goals but will that be £10.5m worth of them?

Just because he is German doesnt mean Bastien will be on pens!

He'll be up front and the team will be a lot sturdier meaning he wont track back as much. The supply improved greatly when Mata properly settled alongside Herrera, and Di Maria can only get better. I also cant see him being benched.

      exactly.

If rooney is essential in some people's eyes - then Hazard is off the charts. The guy will pose more of an attacking threat and is on pens. That's why i think it's absurd some don't have hazard

and yes - Kane > Rooney. I wasn't sure who i wanted to partner costa but picked kane because roo will flop this season too

There's no reason to go for rooney over costa - costa is the man

Just got back from the LFC - Adelaide game. Great game, great atmosphere. Milner was the standout, had a very good game overall and deserved a goal to go with it, although it was offside. He seemed to be playing slightly more attacking compared to Hendo. They shared set pieces also. I thought Ibe played well also, but I think he needs to release the ball a tad earlier, sometimes beats 1-2 players and decides to take on another instead of playing in someone else.

Gomez was very impressive once again, only a friendly I know but from Rodgers' comments I can see him getting game time this season over Moreno, who was pretty average defensively I thought. Clyne looked good and grabbed an assist for Ings' goal.

Lallana was a bit quieter tonight but I do hope to see more of him this season, great player but needs to play centrally which may be a struggle with Coutinho and Firmino about. Origi was a bit dissapointing I thought. I think Ings is better suited to our side and will probably be above him in the pecking order.

It is a pre-season friendly match though, so has to be taken with a pinch of salt. I'll most likely be staying away from Liverpool at the start, although Milner will be one to watch I think.

I've only ever used mine in the first 4 GWs, or saved it for a DGW. The second option isn't there anymore, so I think playing it early will be optimal.

In a Fantasy Football draft type league against friends, what should my strategy be for transfers?

Should I be looking to keep a wide range of coverage to cover myself in case a team with a great fixure falter, or for a week like gw2 for example, where Liverpool host Bournemouth, United are away to Villa and West Ham host Leicester, should I just be going with 3 players from each side?

Any improvements/recommendations gratefully received. My initial perceived risk is with Lens, but with a favourable initial run of fixtures I've stuck with him. Remaining balance 0.5m.

    Schmeichel - Myhill
    Ivanovic - Koscielny - Mings - O'Shea - Angella
    Ramsey - Ozil - Fabregas - Lens - Wanyama
    Wilson - Costa - Rooney

the main question for me regarding the team selection is whether having aguero rooney and hazard ( the 3 top scorer of next season imo ) in your team does worth the risk of having a weaker midfield and defence or not.

    what do you think, guys?

    1. NOMONEY
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

nothing to suggest rooney will break into top3, he is consistent for sure, probably another 100+ pts season, but he wont be top 3. so id only have ageuro and hazard

    2. GoonerByron
      • 14 Years

I have all 3 and don't think it's really effected the rest of my team.. I still have Ozil and Walcott in midfield as well as Hazard also.. I'm thinking about getting rid of Rooney though, I think there will be 3+ players at least that score better than him next season.

here are his appearance stats from past 3 seasons:
    2012–13 Premier League Apperance 27
    2013–14 Premier League Apperance 29
    2014–15 Premier League Apperance 29

he hasnt played more than 30 league games in a season since joining chelsea. is this the season he will finally be nailed and do an ivanovic from last season (playing all 38 games)??

Starts with goals at the end of last season, and now during this pre-season. Sanchez being confirmed out for at least one gameweek, maybe more.

Theo himself has been talking about aiming to be the striker and it's not totally out of the question that he could oust Giroud if he keeps delivering at this rate.

But I don't think anyone sane thinks it's not a big risk.

I think Aguero and Hazard will be but Im not starting with either. If Walcott starts upfront for Arsenal he will be. Rooney could have a big year. I think Oscar will have a big season, although I think Jose will rotate more this year with RLC, Zouma, Falcao/Remy and potentially Baba getting significant gametime so Id be wary of Fabregas, Costa and the Chelsea defence (Im a Chelsea fan).

I said they will be essential. I meant youd have to have them in your team but after a few weeks. Hazards ususally a slow starter and Id rather have an arsenal mid or Fabregas early on. Also Id rather have Rooney for the first few weeks and then switch to Kun. But for the rest of the season Id probably keep Hazard and Kun

For those starting with Hazard and without Aguero. Assuming the rest of your midfield is slightly weaker, e.g. Ritchie, Chadli, Mane or something along those lines, then how are you going to find the 2-2.5m (depending on Costa/Rooney) needed to upgrade to Aguero?

You'd either need to downgrade a heavy hitter or downgrade Ivan, or use three transfer and downgrade two players to find the funds. All options seem unfavourable. Thoughts?

too much trouble to work out how to fit ageuro once the season starts with all the price fluctations, go will go with him from the start, even if it means he wont start the first game or two

Fair enough. I may go without simply due to the ugliness of City's early fixtures.

I might downgrade Tekkers to Deeney and then upgrade rooney
      Leaves me Kun, Sakho, Deeney
      Seem okay or too weak?

I currently have Mane, Ozil, Walcott, Payet and Ritchie in midfield. So Id swap Payet/Mane to a budget midfielder and upgrade Rooney/Costa to Kun and Ozil/Walcott to Oscar/Fab and bring in Hazard on the WC later

    Nailed on Sunderland defenders?
I like there early fixtures and price 4.5
    Matthews, Oshea, Matthews, Kaboul, Coates?
Also think 5.0 is too much (PVA)

After a lot of twiddling, I've managed to get Aguero, Rooney, Hazard, Walcott and Ivanovic in the same team.

    Pantilimon - Myhill
    Ivanovic - Cedric - Mings - Richards - Morgan
    Hazard - Walcott - Ritchie - Howson - Wanyama
    Aguero - Rooney - Deeney

I know the defence is not great (Ivan excepted) but 100 mill only goes so far!

It's actually your midfield isn't looking great rather than defence

Will Myhill be starting and Im not too keen on having Ritchie and Howson as your third and fourth mids. Reckon downgrade Iva to Azpi, Myhill to Hennessey and upgrade Howson

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I can't bring myself to start without Ivan as he's done so well for me over the last couple of years. I shall continue to tinker and try to get a better 3rd midfielder.

        Rooney > Tekkers and upgrade Howson > Chadli/Milner/Hendo. Go with Ivan + 4 × 4.5m
