Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

Who rotates best in a 2 way between BOU WAT LEI NOR? I have Schmeichel in goals if that matters. My 4th is Targett in waiting for a 4m defender to stick his head out of the sand.

Cheers. Pretty set on Francis based on your previous comments, I think. No idea about the Watford lineup as they seem to be buying a lot of refs. How do you think they will line up?

Very difficult to tell now they've bought more players. I would be thought Holebas wouldn't have joined to sit on the bench, and Prodl and Angella with him, but I'm only guessing really.

    Hey all!

    A) Chadli + Walcott + Wilson
    B) Bolasie + Ozil + Sakho
    C) Ki Sung + Walcott + Sakho

Any thoughts? I'm scratching my head on whether Bolasie or Chadli provides the best "moneyball" option, and Ozil/Wally risk vs payoff is again difficult to think of. I guess community shield will provide some answers...

The Hive Mind, can any of you guys enlighten me on Wilson or Deeney, I like the look of both of them so far to be honest. before FFS I knew nothing about either of them, My first instinct is to go Deeney because he seems more influencial for the team, and pens for sure, but I prefer Wilsons Fixtures in the first 5 by a long way, what do you guys think?

      I think consensus is split.

I don't personally like the look of Deeney because a lot of his goals last season were straight balls in behind defences, but he doesn't look particularly quick. I imagine the source for many of his goals last season might be cut off in the PL.

      (I've only seen highlights)

Should win the Ballon D'Or next season. 😀

In seriousness, he looks strong, powerful and back to his best, but whether or not he'll be starting is another matter.

I wouldn't be confident in saying he'll be first choice, but he'd be in my starting XI.

Great team. If you think you cannot improve your weaknesses or are happy to roll the dice with your defence, go ahead! Personally I would not want Nor in goal. I haven't seen a great defence anywhere, at least you spend at little as on that so you can have a great front 7. Your forward line is really expensive but looks amazing.

Your midfield is even better in my opinion and quite similar to mine, haha. I think Cesc is great value and allows for so much more freedom than Haz. Ozil is crucial to Arsenal, and is probably the first name on the team sheet every week. Mane and Chadli are great value choices, and especially Mane has great fixtures. I don't think he is too expensive. Chadli is nailed on and will come good.

I wouldn't really know how to improve this team without changing your perception about some of the teams you selected.

          Thanks!

Only thing I can think of and am working on myself is a front line of Rooney - Costa - Sakho. I just think he could be too good to ignore for 6.5, and with the fixtures being kind of mixed I am even tempted to try some 3-5-2 / 3-4-3 rotation. That would give you 2 Million to upgrade to Aguero instantly, or upgrade Fletcher to a 6.5 midfielders such as Bolasie / Lens/ maybe even Walters or balance out your defence. Whether you want to do that also depends on Benteke's penalty duties, with Penalties you surely must keep him.

Do you think he is on pens atm?

Sakho is indeed tempting. He showed great consistency last season when he was fit. You've just gotta back him for more goals this season. Settled down, with a good pre-season behind him, and the likes of Payet providing for him... Think he's been underpriced. Any chance at arbitrage should be taken in this game...

Hi guys, any comments on the following:

    Boruc / Schemeichel
    Huth / Darmian / Yoshida / lescott / Williams

    Rooney / Costa / Agbonlahor

Darmian appears to be backup, according to LvG so would steer clear. Really like the midfield but not a fan of Aggy up front and not sure if Yoshida is a good pick. Maybe downgrade Abdi and upgrade elsewhere?

Thanks for the comment, I did wonder about Darmian. I was under the illusion about some hype surrounding him. I'm not a fan of Agbon too but it was a must to bring in Silva. I'll replace Ag, Yoshi and Darmian though. Cheers again.

Stay away from Agbonlahor, he is injury prone, likes a yellow and doesn't score goals. Maybe downgrade Darmian to a 5.0 def to allow a swap of Agbonlahor to Deeney or Callum Willson. Yoshida may not play many games if Saints buy a new CB.

Why is Sakho.. who has played and done well in a season in the EPL and is the main striker at WHM priced 1 million cheaper than Payet who has never played in the EPL? i want Payet but cant justify paying 1 million more than sakho so i end up restructuring my team 😆

Until Sturridge comes back he's great value.

He's getting service from Henderson, Coutinho, Firmino, Ibe and Milner now instead of from Bacuna, Clark, Delph and Agbonlahor.

That argument doesn't really hold water. Charlie Austin with relegation standard service outscored Sturridge, Balotelli, Lambert and Borini combined. People seem to be forgetting that Liverpool are sh!t.

With a very budget defence I can get this:

    4.0 - 4.5

    4.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

    Cazorla - Milner - Fabregas - Mata - Wanyama

    Rooney - Aguero - Benteke

        This.

You need to add the 4th game into planning. Brings in the likes of Liverpool Arsenal and Coty more prominently too

    8. Jay_

Yep Liverpool, West Ham and Swansea put a spanner in the works with that, could start with Wilson then switch to Sakho gw2 or something like that

The main benefit of an early WC is to see the lie of the land, which cheap defs are playing, who's playing in the hole, that kind of thing. But you need 3 or 4 GWs to see that.

WCing GW2 is too early, you end up with Eric Dier or Marlon Harewood...

I'd say no, but Lovren seems to have been playing in what looked like a predominantly 'first team' in the pre-season games. Obviously it's not necessarily indicative of Rodgers' plans, but it's enough to worry me.

How good is this team with Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero.
    Pantilimon (Rudd)
Azpillicueta Mangala Koscielny (Senderos) (Steven Taylor)
    Milner Sanchez Depay Hazard 5.0mill
    Aguero Ighalo (Hooper)

While Alexis is rested who could I have to fill in for the 5.0 million mid and Alexis for 2 weeks.
    I was thinking:
    Tadic + Walcott

He does score a few in fairness - 4 last season (out of 13) and 5 (out of 10) the season before. That said I've no doubts with a bit of service from a midfield worth a damn instead of long balling it up that he should be good for 15 - 20 this season

If I think of some of his best goals off the top of my head, most of them were goals he largely made himself.

Skinning of Gary Cahill before slotting past Cech with his weak foot.
      Free-kick top corner, against QPR.
25 yard (or so) right foot missile, at West Brom.
Left foot curler in top corner, against Man Utd.
Powering through centre of Liverpool defence before finishing, at Anfield.
One of the best team goals of that season, at Anfield. Same game as above.

Not bad for a limited target man. 🙄

Having spent 77m and only addressing 1/3 defensive, arguably 4 positions. Liverpool still need a RCB, DM and a cover LB. Won't happen under BR though. Pity really.

I disagree on the centre backs, as you should know by now I too think Skrtel's a donkey but I actually think Lovren could be a good defender for us as well as the man-mountain Sakho... Ilori and Gomez also waiting in the wings... it doesn't seem necessary...

As for the DM, we've needed one for a few years now! 😀

Nah come on now Skrtel's class! Such a presence in the air and always putting his body on the line. But I agree given time Lovren should show his class, Sakho too to a lesser extent.
