With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

    Quick one if you may...

    A) Mane and Chadli (0.5 itb)

    B) Depay and Richie

To fit into this line up:

    .... .... Hazard Ozil Wanyama

    Rooney Giroud Sakho

sorry the 0.5 itb applies to B

Hmm that's tough. A is definitely the safe pick, and should score more points over the season, but B could get you off to a flying start... If your defence could do with 0.5m, then B, otherwise stick with A.

Defence as it stands is :

        Ivan, Cedric, Huth, OShea, Cameron.

I'm sure it could use the 0.5 but where would i spend my 0.5?

Hmm. I suppose you could swap Cameron for a safer pick, but there's plenty of those at 4.5 anyway.

Cameron fair certain of game time i would have thought, plays 3 positions, been shielding the back 4 in the double pivot pre season. Cheers

    Afternoon folks.

What is the best front 3 to start with, excluding the big hitter (Kun, Rooney, Costa).

I'm thinking something like Lukaku - Giroud - Pelle ?

*Lukaku - WAT, sot, MCI, tot
Giroud - WHU, cry, LIV, new
Pelle - new, EVE, wat, NOR

    * Lukaku > Sakho / Benteke for GW2

Pelle is a target man, Jrod isn't so Pelle is pretty much nailed.

Yes. JRod plays best from the left, he struggles with his back to goal, whereas Pelle brings everyone else into the game and can hold the ball up. Pelle is as nailed as they get for the opening fixtures, at least unless Koeman decides to rotate heavily for the Europa League.

@Ryan completely disagree with you re: Cazorla

He is much more essential to Arsenal's play in CM than Ramsey. Just because you think Ramsey is a better central midfielder doesn't make him a good option for Arsenal there.

Ramsey loves to dribble and take players on, making him a liability in the middle of the park.
Cazorla is one of the most composed players in the prem, and plays a very simple game, switching play from left to right and vise versa.

Fyi I'm not disagreeing that Ramsey isn't a good central mid, but Cazorla is 100% first choice for Wenger in the middle of the park, with the second slot up for grabs.

Well said. I think both are very different players which makes it hard to compare them, although Cazorla did seem to fit in there extremely well last season. No need to change it really.

      1. Acquafresca

The double pivot is basically Santi + 1 of Coq/ Ramsey/ Wilshere depending on opposition.

Against top teams I think Coq gets the nod, with Ramsey/ Jacko getting the start against weaker teams who will see less of the ball.

Thats cool. I expect Cazorla and Coq to start the season in the pivot as well but they are not nailed on and they will need to perform to stay there. I do believe that Ramsey will make the CM spot his own sooner rather than later.

If he does, he pushes Coq out of the starting XI.

Cazorla can play in an attacking position as well and he only appears nailed because he was on form at the end of last year. Lets see if he can keep it up.

Against mid or lower table teams it's fine because Arsenal will have 60+% possession of the ball, with less need for Coq to break up counter attacks.

That's a bit contradicting, assuming Arsenal control the game against mid or lower table teams which is when Cazorla is usually in and around the box then they will probably rely on counter attacks, in which case Coq would be needed

I haven't seen too much of Gabriel but Mertesacker as captain seems pretty safe IMO. Although he was dropped for a period last season he earnt his place back and it's certainly his to lose again. Kosc is still worth the extra 0.5m IMO

Both youngsters it would seem odd. Kane can play as a 10 and Berahino is probably capable on the wing. Surely they'll play together.

433 could be on the cards as well with Eriksen on the LW affecting Chadlii

          442?

I don't see Eriksen as mobile enough as a winger. More as a central playmaker surely.

Berahino will be a wide winger with Eriksen on the left with Rose bombing forward for width.

              Eriksen won't be wide.

              Probably 4231.

              - - - - - Kane - - - - -
              Chadli - Eriksen - Berahino

Yeah thats probably realistic but Eriksen has been used as a LW plenty of times before when Dembele has come into the team at Chadlii's expense. 433 was the formation then.

Don't think he'd play every week. Bear in mind Spurs play pretty much a second team for the Europa - can see him starting up front in every game in the cups and coming on as an impact sub in the league for the start. I would actually worry that Chadli's spot would be most at threat though - both would mostly play as a direct goal threat from the left, with Kane and Eriksen nailed on, and Pochettino preferring a more creative option like Lamela on the right.

Ulloa is an interesting pick, great option if he's first choice, but Leicester have so many forwards its hard to be sure.

Young is another slightly uncommon player, who I also like, but is really too expensive to be a substitute.

I think you're pretty well set otherwise. If Hennessey stays at Palace, it might be worth replacing him with Rudd, just so you're covered if Ruddy gets injured or suspended.

He'll probably have a similar season to last IMO. He'll score goals, get assists and bring in the points, but is very patchy and a lot last season owned him at the wrong times.

So yes he is an option but is very inconsistent. He did well in a period of harder fixtures last season, and then almost everyone (excluding me) brought him in for a DGW + period of easy fixtures and he did next to nothing.

It does, but they don't pick up enough for it to affect their points.

They'll never make a block, as unless it's outside the box, it will instead be recorded as a save. They also don't seem to ever get interceptions, with the way that OPTA define those. That leaves them with clearances, and at most one or two of those a game won't make any difference.

The key is to look for players that are busy, that's what the system rewards.

So all action centre backs like Williams, Koscielny, Jagielka and Fonte are excellent picks.

Full backs will only pick up bonus generally if they have an outstanding feature, otherwise you're better off with a CB. People like Azpilicueta or Ward who make lots of tackles, and Baines or Trippier who see lots of the ball and create lots of chances.

Can't believe it but I am considering selecting three mids that haven't got a premier league appearance between them.

    Depay isn't surprising of course.

Then there is Payet and Wignaldum. Both players who score and create, almost certain set piece responsibility, and priced at 7.5 and 7.0. I can't see either team having a stellar season but I can see these two being involved in everything good that they do and gobbling up the bonuses.

    Anyone else tempted by them?

Yeah, you may be right. For some reason I am feeling some confidence there.

I think he's at a good age with good experience coming off a goal scoring season. Being captain you would hope he would be robust enough to hit the ground running if he us technically able. He will look to overlap the striker at times. 7 seems a very fair price...I'm normally cautious! May come to regret this 🙂

Well hence its inclusion! That is the issue. It surprises me because I'm normally pretty conservative. I just see good upsides with these players. I have good reliably elsewhere and with one transfer I can make it Depay +1 other so my balls aren't out there too much. As noted, Payet has some good fixtures.

Milner is a safe alternative but I'm just not sold on how this Liverpool team will settle together.

I should also not that I pick 5 midfielders that I'm content to rotate not 4 + filler

I just feel as if you'd be better off trying to shave away some of that risk. I've decided not to go with Milner as well but there is a wealth of options in midfield at all prices.

            • 14 Years

            Yes, very fair comment.

There is definite risk, but I feel like the set pieces mitigate that substantially. They are both playmakers that play high up and I can just see them getting a piece of everything.

There are lots of options. The fixtures don't seem to be pointing in too many directions right off the bat but I'll give it further thought.

            Appeciate your responses.

Cabaye is a wait and see. He could be great, but we need to monitor whether he plays deep or advanced, as well as which set pieces he's on. He also has a fairly tough set of opening fixtures.

Does anybody else feel Aguero is overpriced? It's tough to think of a good team with him and Hazard both in and given the choice I'd take Haz over Aguero.

Anybody else thinking of not getting Aguero in GW4?

Not owning Aguero can single-handedly destroy your season so be warned

No. Fair price. Is he expensive? Yes. You cant make blanket value judgements on players before the season starts, it will hinder your progress up the overall standings if you dont react to form players. Aguero needs to show he's back up to speed and then he'll find his way into my team

ki & ritchie & sakho to rotate ... you can check that

Not bad. Defence isn't strong, but far from awful, and you've got the flexibility to go 352.

    Fabianski - Schmeichel

    Chadli - 4.5 - Sterling - Walcott - Fabregas
    Wilson - Rooney - Costa

    Thanks 🙂

dont like that 2nd defence at all, targett too short term with bertrand expected to return any time soon, ward in a team managed by pardrew that doesnt like clean sheets, oshea has rotation risk with kaboul and coates, and shaw is just meh

    Any advice pls:
    Schmechel/Butland
Kosi Aspi Kollarov (Gamble) Cover: Targett Kabould for Kollarov
Fab Ozil Silva Ritchie (Rotate Deeney) Chadli
    Rooney Benteke Deeney (Rotate Ritchie)

a little concerned not having Hazard and other high % players.

Call me crazy but before bed I whipped up a nice against-the-grain front 8:

    Hazard - Ozil - Depay - Tadic - 4.5
    Rooney - Giroud - Pelle

Doesn't look half bad, taking fixtures into consideration.

    1. ManofKent

Not sure it's that against the grain. Decent picks.

Almost nobody on here has posted a team with Giroud, Pelle, or Tadic in their teams.

3/8 is decent in terms of differentials, especially since almost everyone's 5th mid is irrelevant.

Not really punts, more like calculated risks.

I like it. Three double ups is an interesting approach... Could work out great, given that each of those pairs are likely to assist one another, though it carries a risk, particularly with Southampton possibly being affected by the Europa.

Not sure. Everyone seems to be stuck on Benteke, Sakho, Costa etc.

Thought I'd whip up a different front 3.

you have done well. Arsenal attacking options are key first 4 GW as they aren't playing teams with the most frugal backlines going around. Someone suggest on a previous page that Giroud wasn't nailed? Find that hard to believe.

Only three against the grain picks there but I think Tadic could be gold this year.

I have the same front 3, plus Haz and 4.5 so 5 of the same players; I think Depay is wildly popular (24.5% of teams at the moment) so this isn't super against the grain. Ozil (9%) instead of Cazorla (17%) and Tadic (7%) are both differentials that may pay off however. If you're feeling it go for it! Personally I would wait and see on Depay, I actually like the differential of NOT having him for now and I think Rooney is a good way to cover MUFC attack.

    Thoughts on an initial RMT?
    Pants (Krul)
    Terry-Alderweireld-Merts (2x 4.0 probably Baker and Mariappa)
    Haz-Chadli-Caz-[Ritchie or Ki]- (Wanyama)
    Rooney-Pelle-Giroud

    Thanks for any suggestions!
