Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

Skinny at the back is fine, if you need some funds look at Sterling > Ozil (im not sold on Sterling).

Like the rest, Mane is a good pick based on fixtures alone. Go well

I'd rather have Fonte than Ivanovic to start the year, which would free up some funds to improve elsewhere.

Not a fan of double West Ham attack or double Hampton attack, I'd look to change that.

      Overall it's solid, 8/10

Hendo, despite terrific price and some set piece duty, need to adjust to many, many teammates and I think Benteke might even steal his PK duty.

        thanks man.

tbh I rarely start the season with an ARS defender. ANd Kos has this issue with sending-offs you know what I'm talking about. But then this year we got Cech and that gives the team an edge, and Kos is the only nailed on option. If there's 1 thing I want to do to this team, it is to downgrade Kos.

        1. @BigChrisso
          • 15 Years

Would you get Cech in as a keeper and swap out Kos for a cheaper defender?

Kos > Mert. He's the BFG among the ARS midfield midgets and will get his share of goals/flick ons from corners.

Yeah I'm thinking I could get him but Mignolet got more points and PPG last season so I'm not sure I can justify the extra. Will see how the cash flow goes and if Chelsea pick up their defensive form.

getting Courtois early is a foil for those who have Chelsea defenders, still get the CS points should they manage one or two early. Will grab a Chelsea defender when Jose turns the screws mid season as is his style.

As we are forced to use a WC in the first half of the season i'm taking a much shorter view of things for GW1 and with that in mind i prefer him over Mignolet.

I had actually taken him out on favor of Azpi but today I realised the one fact Doosra was conveniently leaving out while hinting that Ivan is worth it. Got Ivan in, for the only reason that I had cash to spare.

To be fair I do like the lot of 5.5 defs s you have mentioned. A lot of value there if we get them correct. Ivan is just a fail safe option for dullards like me. But will dump him to generate cash either for Azpi or some 5.5 defs when the situation with those 8.5 mids gets clearer as to who is nailed on and in form.

i like your GK combo (I'm on that one for now)

Def: you could lose Alderweireld. Spurs not known for clean sheets, and I think you could do better with the money. I love the Morgan pick.
Mid: Great picks, i like how you've gone big on 5th mid (presumably to rotate as needed with Deeney). I would go Ki over Grealish. Love the Milner pick

Nice, well-rounded team using value players not often chosen. Best RMT i've seen in days TBH.

Keepers good. Ivan and budget defenders good. Haz good. Forwards good. Not sold on Alder, Yaya, Caz or Cabaye though, would be happier personally with rotating 4th and 5th mid and going a bit more flair in the other two. Like... Silva and Payet. As an example.

    Going with Ozil and Wally.

Playing devil's advocate, surely I'll get 9m sitting on the bench way too often as ARS will be rotating 6 attacking spots among Flamini, Arteta, Coq, Rossisky, Wilshere, AOC, Wally, Rambo, Sanchez, Cazorla, Welbeck, Giroud Akpom, Gnabry, Iwano?

Even starters may not see 60 minutes to get 2 points. Not to mention shared BPS.

Based on last year, Fab's points are primarily assists. And he primarily assists Costa. So Costa actually covers Fab (rare for attackers).

yea my rationale as well. Costa for me matches Hazard in terms of output with the captaincy...and Cesc has a good partnership with Costa. Win-win and 2.5m extra to play with.

if you are settled on putting the armband elsewhere, it makes it easier to give up on him. With MCI fixtures from GW3 to 10 i cant look past Aguero tbh, unless Rooney does what i think he will do this season. Further, Rooney and Kun rotate brilliantly home and away. If the situation arises that i need a VC i feel comfortable will Rooney as back up!

So i dont know much about Aston Villa.. never really interested me when it came to fpl options. However, Westwood at 4.5 intrigues me. 7 assists followed by 3 goals and 2 assists the season before last. Anyone know anything about him? How come just one assist last season? he takes a couple of set pieces and plays in the double pivot right?

And anyone else think that Toby could prove to be a bargain this season? good run from GW 2 to 6(STK lei EVE sun CPL) and apart from last season spurs always kept a good amount of CS's. They spent most of last season getting used to Pochettino's style of football and it looked like it finally clicked towards the end. Also, Toby + Vertonghen is a formidable CB partnership and Trippier could help them too

There are some things which are considered as gospel on this site.. from Chelsea defense is essential no matter the fixtures, to never spend even 0.5 extra on your 8th attacker, to Hazard is essential, to Spurs defense is sh!t. Puts everyone in a box tbh

      From an article about Pochettino
"The underlying principal is simple – when in possession, patience and purpose in your passing, pace and dynamism in your attack. Without possession, persistence and pressure on a level you’ve never been asked to reach before. Under Pochettino, not all players need to know how to attack, but certainly, they all need to know how to defend."

i know this to be true cause i owned Eriksen for the first 11 weeks of last season where he could not handle the pressing/defending system and hence tired out too quick. got used to it the second i sold him though 😎

Walcott is my Aguero bank for GW3, and I don't fancy City attack first 2 GWs.

Liverpool...if Benteke looks good in pre season, Costa/Fab > Benteke/Hazard easy for me.

Cheers J1. Yeah considering that if I downgrade PVA or Kosc>Bellerin/Mert.

Thing is...i've started the past 2 seasons with 4.5-4.0 keepers from same team. Usually works out well for me while I see others get frustrated with benching the wrong keeper.

ouch that's pretty expensive. Personally, the real reason I'm going with Ruddy-Rudd at the moment is I want as much budget in front 8 as possible to get the price structure right and then move around as necessary.

I don't see rotating keepers delivering that much extra points anyway for 0.5 extra.

Yep that's the plan depending on how Haz/Fab/Costa look in Charity Shield and how Benteke looks in preseason friendlies.

If Haz looks insatiable and it looks like Liverpool game play tries to accommodate Benteke...Costa/Fab > Hazard/Benteke easy.

hey CF. one alternative I have is Myhill-4.0 in goal instead of Ruddy, and Norwich defender in place of PVA/O'Shea...saves some coin as well. WBA fixtures abit scary though...granted Pulis will be aware as well and set up accordingly.

WBA defender is more long term. You can start them each week and feel assured that they have a real chance of a CS. If you can find a cheap alternative for GW1 and 3. i,e, NOR/CPL defender you might be home free!

Still on the fence between these two teams.

    Myhill Henessey
    AZPI SAKHO Cedric Francis Targett
    Walcott OZIL Cesc Sterling 4.5m
    Rooney Benteke PELLE

    Myhill Henessey
    IVAN KOSC Cedric Francis Targett
    Walcott MANE Cesc Sterling 4.5m
    Rooney Benteke SAKHO

Convinced to not have Hazard at the beginning, won't be captaining him on the short term and the 2.5m difference is too much as this stage. Hoping Cesc will keep up.
Walcott and Rooney also have good opening fixture and I expect them to start well. Benteke too.

Yeah would get him sooner or later. He's the best player in the league and possibly FPL wise too. But just can't see fitting him without destroying the team balance, or making major sacrifices at this moment.

The 'best' thing I can do is downgrade Ivan to a 4.5m rotation to fit Hazard in the 2nd team.

    3. Shifty

hey there. definitely prefer the first option personally. But am just wondering if that's a little too much spent in midfield.

      1. Koflok

All are 8-9m. It seems 'light' because there's no major big hitter (Silva, Sanchez, Hazard).

Will replace Rooney and downgrade one of Walcott/Ozil or Ivanovic.

Don't think the midfield is light - it just looks a tad heavy but it probably works out to same budget with a 7.0+Hazard in place of 2 of the 9.0s.

"Will want 2 City attacker GW4 onwards so will start with Sterling" - this used to be my thinking before, but then I realized that I can get Kun + 1 MCI mid with FTs by GW4 so I now I'm not going to force myself.

That's a good plan but Im sure I will use the FT for early bandwagons. So most likely there would be a hit 😀

And I have a thing with explosive new players.

If you could afford either one of these, which would you pick?

    A. Ritchie
    B. Milner (have Benteke)

I can afford Milner but Ritchie seems even better value for what he could offer

All depends on the price difference.
