Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

I'm thinking of going with Courtois or Cech instead of the 4.5 rotation, and then losing one of Kosc or Azpi. Anyone else doing the same?

        Minimum spend is best
Save points even easier to come by this year so there will be even less between the GK scores

I've toyed with Courtois plus a 4m, and then losing Azpi for Ashley Williams.

Rotate him then with Matthews & Huth. Tricky tho.

May just go Panti and 4m. Decent games until mid November to play him every week...

This is what I'm considering too. Either Williams or Toby in for Azpi. Don't have a lot of faith in the defence of these promoted sides. Schmeichel was unreal towards the end of last season, mind.

Seriously considering it. I feel most comfortable with Cech/Azpi for now. Also leaves room for slotting in either Clyne or Darmian, depending on any of them looking good.

If it's been hard before, it's getting a team who looks decent without breaking the fund limit. This time around it seems pretty easy to build a good looking team. There's just too many options. Right now I feel it's up in the air wheter Cazorla, Walcott, Özil or Giroud will get the ARS points. Same goes for Depay/Mata/Rooney, Sterling/Silva/Yaya and (to a lesser degree) Fab/Haz/Costa. Then, add all the hard to assess, but still tempting strikers in the 8.0-9.5 category. And some decent cheapies as well. I think it's harder than just settle with choosing between expensive players you know will perform at some level.

    9. FPL Daniel
      • 16 Years
      10 years, 8 months ago

Simply there are too many options. A lot of players have been priced reasonably well, almost every one from the good teams have nice fixtures etc. etc. etc. I think that is the reason. And yeah I agree it is difficult, so many options. But I like it. It will differentiate the boys from the men 😉

Really easy in my case, as the good striker options are clearish and plenty of good cheap defenders, just can't decide on keepers. Might just get Cech until W/C in a few weeks.

Tried a different setup. Obviously weak up front, but I don't see any of the initial value of anyone in between 6.5 and 10.5. I would love to go for Benteke, Giroud, Kane, Lukaku or Pelle, but I feel it's pretty uncertain which of them will fire and which who won't. For now I put more faith in the expensive midfielders. Bad strategy? Thoughts appreciated:

    Cech / 4.0
    Azpi / Darmian / Huth / O'Shea / Haidara
    Hazard / Sterling / Walcott / Fabregas / Westwood
    Rooney / Sakho / C. Wilson

    For Agueros return:

Walcott/Sterling/Fabregas (the one who performs the worst -> 5.5 who seems decent
    Sakho/C. Wilson -> Aguero
    Darmian -> 4.5

    Mert - Huth/Williams/Wisdom... 2 from 3 rotation (Targett)
Fabregas - Sterling - Ozil - Chadli (Wanyama)
    Aguero - Rooney - Ade

          I couldn't think of a better word.

Brunt is a poor pick and may be playing reverse OOP to boot.
Ritchie, Payet & Lens are unproven risks.
Then there is another risk in Ade.

Far far too many risks in one team, I've actually never seen such a risky team.

Ok apart from scrapping brunt, who else should I sack off?

And FYI I'm in a draft league so most good players aren't gonna be available hence why I'm thinking outside of the box!

Tbh getting Hazard and Rooney could be tough. The rest I reckon I can get but like others have said, the midfield ain't great in fact it is a bit offensive and too risky. All the proven Mids will go early doors tho

There are loads of nailed Mids, not many good striker options so I wanted to Prioritise strikers and a couple of solid defenders. I think Rooney and Lukaku are great picks when considering the whole season. And if ade moves to villa, that's a 6m gamble I'm happy to take. Hazard will obviously be my first pick. Maybe 3rd pick should be someone out of walcott/ozil/sterling/Yaya? Then if I lose out on Ivanovic go for another Chelsea defender?

My advice would be you need some steady proven players to go along side the risks. Hendo? Milner? Cazorla? Ramsey? Tadic? Mane?

I reckon I could get Tadic. Is he nailed enough tho? Also which of the risks should I keep? I was actually originally torn between 2 of Wijnaldum, Payet and Lens

    Schmeichel Hennesey
    Azpi Cedric Williams Huth Targett
    Hazard Walcott Ozil Depay Wanyama
    Rooney Benteke Vardy

    My thoughts about my team:
I dont think there is any standout keeper rotations this year that are worth the price so I have decided to go ultra cheap. Since I think that there is a very high chance of me wildcarding in GW4 I am not that worried about a injury on Schmeichel leaving me without a GK. I have the same reasoning behind picking Targett. I think Azpi offers best value of the 6.0 defenders. I plan to rotate Williams and Huth and play Cedric every week until I wildcard. Maybe he is a bit weak to be a week in week out defender but got to compromise somewhere and with Southamptons decent fixtures I think it is okay. Walcott is worth the gamble and Hazard is a must imo. Ozil looks good these days and I like the idea of having two Arsenal mids to start of with. Depay is a gamble but his potential is just too huge that I can leave him out. Same for Benteke. Not sure that he will be a success in Liverpool but for 8.5 he is so worth the gamble imo. Vardy is overlooked in here I think. Great opening fixtures, ended last season very well and it seems he continues where he ended when looking at the pre-season results. Comments?

Thinking of going with this team:

    Cech, Schwarzer
    Cedric, Azpilicueta, Huth, Mings, O'Shea
    Silva, Fabregas, Ozil, Sigurdsson, Aarons
    Rooney, Benteke, Wilson

£2m in the bank for Rooney to Aguero and Benteke to either Pelle or Lukaku. Any thoughts?

Looks nice. I'd have Deeney over Wilson, but personal preference really.

Pretty similar to what I just made! I went with:

      Panti/4.0.
      Cedric - Williams - Toby - Huth - Targett
      Hazard - Ozil - Mane - Chadli - 4.5
      Aguero - Benteke - Sakho

Can't go without Hazard after that show versus Barca. Also prefer Benteke + Sakho to Rooney + Wilson, but have no stats to back it up, just my feeling. Don't really like the look of my defence without at least one Arsenal or Chelsea defender.

    At moment my team is

    Schmeichel schwarzer
    Azpi kosc cedric francis saylor
    Wally ozil milner sterling fletcher
    kun tekkers sakho.

Would have exact money to do

Walcott to hazard and tekkers to adebayor.

    Wort it?

I really can't decide between Azpi and Kosc as my locked in 6m premium defender. My thoughts are:

    Azpi:
    - Chelsea could get even more cleanies this season as Mour looks to retain the title
    - SLIGHT rotation threat WHEN they buy a Luis replacement
    - only good for 2-3 assists per season
    - did well under last years bonus system but hasn't really got many bonus in the past and may not suit the new rules so much?

    Kosc:
    - Arsenal may get slightly more cleanies this year with Cech leading from the back
    - decent for 3-4 goals per season from set pieces
    - slightly injury prone/ hardly ever plays a full season
    - monstered the bonus points a couple of seasons ago and maybe the new bonus tweaks will see him return to those days?

What does every else think - are these thoughts accurate and who are you choosing?

Azpi hands down, as not injury prone. Cech will outscore Kos. Ars will keep lots of cleanies. Maybe Bellerin might be worth a look after a few weeks.
