Harry Kane strikes as Spurs are beaten by MLS All Stars. United fall to defeat against PSG, David Nugent and Riyad Mahrez guide Leicester to victory, whilst Newcastle and Sunderland both suffer losses to lower league opposition. Here’s the round-up of the last 24 hours’ action…

York City 2 Newcastle 1

Ayoze Perez netted from an acute angle as Newcastle slumped to their third defeat in five matches. Rolando Aarons further bolstered his chances of securing a starting berth next term, clattering the bar with a header and routinely whipping in threatening crosses. Aleksandar Mitrovic fashioned a wealth of chances on his debut but was unable to convert.

The Magpies lined up in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with a strong youth contingent in attendance. Karl Darlow kept goal behind a back four of Lubomir Satka, Gael Bigirimana, Jamaal Lascelles and Shane Ferguson. Mehdi Abeid and Yoan Gouffran operated in the double pivot, while Aarons, Siem de Jong (number ten) and Ayoze Perez provided the service for lone striker Mitrovic. Steve McClaren made just three second-half changes, with Aarons, Mitrovic and keeper Darlow the men to make way.

After the match, the Magpies boss admitted his new acquisition is still some way short of match sharpness:

“It was good to see Mitrovic playing. He has not trained for a couple of weeks and needs minutes. You could see from his movement and runs he is a good player. He has been training back in Belgium. Yet because of the ongoing saga of his transfer he has missed some days. We only expected one half from him but he wanted more. It shows his enthusisam on the field so we are pleased to get him on. He has only had 24 hours, trained then played. He is a good lad and he had a smile on his face. Once he crosses the white line he is a bit of devil.”

Doncaster Rovers 2 Sunderland 0

Jeremain Lens garnered all the plaudits as the Black Cats were humbled by the League One side. The Dutch forward’s searing pace and inventive wing play filled a niche that was sorely missing in Sunderland’s repertoire last season. Sebastian Coates earned his first minutes since penning a permanent contract at the Stadium of Light, while Younes Kaboul made his debut in the second period.

Dick Advocaat fielded his troops in a 4-2-3-1 formation, naming Costel Pantilimon in goal behind a rearguard of Billy Jones, John O’Shea, Coates and Patrick van Aanholt. Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell manned the engine room, while Jermain Defoe and Lens were stationed out wide, with Adam Johnson tucked in behind lone striker Steven Fletcher. Connor Wickham sustained a knock in training so played no part in this encounter.

Offering up his views after the match, Advocaat heaped praise on Jeremain and Kaboul, before calling on his players to improve against Hannover on Saturday:

“Everybody could see how well Jeremain played tonight. Kaboul also did very well when he came off the bench for the second half. The fitness has to be there but it was a poor result, so hopefully on Saturday we can show how far we are with our progress when we face Hannover.”

Rotherham United 1 Leicester City 2

Riyad Mahrez and David Nugent both netted their second goals of pre-season from the edge of the area, extending Leicester’s unbeaten streak to four matches. The forward pairing provided the supporters with something to cheer about, following an insipid first half in which the Foxes were devoid of creativity.

True to his moniker, Claudio “The Tinkerman” Ranieri opted for a change of formation, deploying his charges in a 4-2-3-1 set-up after sticking to a three-man defence in his first three matches in charge. Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was shielded by a back line of Danny Simpson, Ritchie De Laet, Liam Moore and Jeffrey Schlupp. Ryan Watson and Danny Drinkwater occupied the defensive midfield berths, while Tom Lawrence, Mahrez and Nugent formed the trio behind Leonardo Ulloa. The Leicester boss made wholesale changes from the side that faced Burton Albion just 24 hours earlier, with all but Watson earning the full 90 minutes.

Ranieri is now confident that his side are well prepared to face Sunderland in their season opener, but his intention to employ a variety of formations will set alarm bells ringing for Fantasy managers:

“I feel good. I think the team is ready for the start of the season. I know last season that they played in different systems – we can do the same this season. Now, I will look at tonight’s game and the other training sessions and I will choose a staring XI. I think we are focused on the first match [against Sunderland], then the second match and then throughout the season. We have to fight every match with our character and strength.”

MLS All-Stars 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Harry Kane christened his pre-season debut with a spectacular 25-yard strike and enjoyed a raft of other opportunities at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The North London club dominated proceedings – boasting 62% possession and 14 shots to the hosts’ seven – but fell to defeat due to a five-minute spell of sloppy defending.

Spurs lined up in their favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, with Michel Vorm keeping guard behind a back four of Kyle Walker, Toby Aldeweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies. Nabil Bentaleb was joined by Eric Dier in the double pivot, while Mousa Dembele (right wing), Christian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli (left wing) threaded the balls through to Kane. Hugo Lloris (fractured wrist) and Erik Lamela (fitness) were not included in the squad. Pochettino changed his 11 starters over the course of the second period, with Kieran Trippier, Kevin Wimmer, Dele Alli and Tom Carroll coming on at the break.

Paris Saint-Germain 2 Manchester United 0

The Red Devils rounded off their pre-season tour of USA with a naïve defensive display against the Ligue 1 champions. David De Gea was uncharacteristically careless throughout the encounter, serving up misplaced passes and misjudging a through ball as team-mate Luke Shaw netted an unfortunate opener for the French side. Phil Jones was the chief culprit for PSG’s second, failing to pick up Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who stole in behind the English centre-back and tapped in from two yards out.

United adopted a 4-2-3-1 set-up, fielding a back five of De Gea, Matteo Darmian, Jones, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw. Michael Carrick and fit-again Bastian Schweinsteiger patrolled the centre of the park, with Ashley Young (left wing), Memphis Depay (number ten) and Juan Mata (right) operating behind lone marksman Wayne Rooney in what was the club’s final friendly of the summer.

Speaking on his favoured rearguard for United’s opener against Spurs, Van Gaal revealed he’s already decided in three of his back-four for the Gameweek 1 visit of Spurs:

“I have to start with the formation and when the formation is doing well, I let them pay in that formation. I think I shall play [Luke] Shaw with [Matteo] Darmian, and with Daley Blind. The right central position I have to consider. I am very pleased with the performance of Darmian, and you can see he can play on the right and left. Also, a benefit of this year’s tour is that we don’t have any injuries. Last year I was forced to use, for example, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in the first Premier League match. Now, I have a wider selection and I can use everybody who I think I have to use. There is more competition now and there is more balance in the selection. I have a lot of confidence to start the competition.”

The United boss also conceded that speculation over De Gea’s future is hardly helping, in light of the Spaniard’s error-strewn display:

“I cannot say he (De Gea) did not make a mistake. But everybody can makes mistakes and when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is mostly a goal and that’s the difference. We have a situation that is not favourable for David de Gea, but neither for us and neither for the club [Real Madrid] that maybe he wants to go to.”

Gary Hooper for a backup fwd @ 4.5m.
Planning on 3-5-2. He didn't do too badly last season and simply for cover.

    Frees up funds elsewhere.

Just entered a work league with a big pot of gold at the end of it. How does this look, any changes?

    Fabianski / Hennessy
    Azpi / Francis / Jenkinson / Huth / O'Shea
    Chadli / Hazard / Walcott / Sterling / Wanyama
    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho

My trouble is that I've no obvious route to get Aguero in.

Anyone watch the game last night? Were Utd poor? How did Roon & Depay look? I can't understand why Depay is behind the striker and Mata out wide, why isn't it the other way around ffs.

Very poor. Yes its preseason, but PSG are a decent measuring stick, especially defensively.

Depay looks lost in that role, he will need a few weeks to adjust.

United were okay. Some hints of good attacking play and Darmian and Shaw looked good going forward. However the CBs were aweful, Jones in particular. So so poor and DDG was not focused at all.

hmmm, Shaw stood out for me and Darm did make 1 glaring error early on but both looked sharp. Problem is they both got forward so much that the terrible CBs couldn't cope.

"Louis van Gaal says he is confident Rooney will step up to the plate this season and score 25-plus goals, now he is restored to his favoured striking role.

But Rooney's natural tendency to drift out of the central striker's position, to influence the play and try to generate something, means there was often no United presence in the six-yard box to put pressure on the PSG defence and keeper.

Rooney's natural exuberance and desire to be involved in the game takes him all over the pitch at times, but United and van Gaal need him to occupy that danger zone in front of the opposition goal, otherwise they pose little threat there.

Rooney has scored once in the US here, a header against Barcelona after getting away with a shove to the back of his marker, and has not looked like posing much of a goal threat on the tour.

United need that to change if they are to have a successful season."

I didn't watch the game myself, but this was someone's observation

Sorry, that doesn't really answer your Depay question. I'd wait till after week 1 vs Spurs, don't think you need to rush to get him/Mata yet, and it should be clearer after Spurs.. But the signs are good, regarding him being a starter. Takes a great free kick too

I think they will settle once Depay gets up to speed with the new team. I think the bigger question is, what are they going to do about the defence? It seems the defence was at sea from the reports. Not convinced by Blind in CB. Big fan of Blind, and he did well at full back last season but you can see that he is not a defender with positional sense sometimes and he's not the quickest. Would prefer Rojo in there or an actual defender for that matter.

Hello lads! Excited about the new season starting, have been playing around with my team this week and really want a good start for a change. Tactic: stop punting!

    Butland (Myhill)
    Azpi, Darmian, Huth (Cedric, O'shea)
    Sterling, Fabregas, Ramsey, Hendo, Young
    Roo, Giroud (Sakho)

Uncertain about Giroud and Young, could do something with those after the CS.

    Courtois (Butland)

    Azpi Huth Bassong (Williams, Bardsley)

    Hazard Wally Ibe Yaya Ritchie

    THE MERITS OF A DEENEY/WILSON 3-5-2 ROTATION

The more I analyse my team, and the pricing across the games, the more a Deeney/Wilson 3-5-2 rotation stands out to me..?

The fact that Ivan outscored Costa last year, made me think that is 3-4-3 really the best option this year with the increased value to be found elsewhere in midfield and defence?

    BENEFITS;

Perfect fixture symmetry with the main man of each team playing at home every Game Week throughout the season.

    Deeney is on Watford pens.

Wilson is a shade cheaper than Ritchie.

Allows a stonking midfield with Hendo and four big hitters to give coverage of all the top four teams...

No need for a 4.5 bench mid. When you need a sub you know you've got a team's number one striker coming on which could give you a decent points boost on occasions.. I'm thinking a nightmare week where Walcott is benched, but then Deeney subs in with a last minute away pen to snatch a 1-1 draw... Goal + BAPS incoming off the bench to save the day! 🙂

    DISADVANTAGES;

Obviously only one heavy hitter forward possible, but aside from Kane for Spurs cover, all the other teams can be covered through the midfield adequately. Costa is a risk, Hendo/Milner are cheaper than Benteke, maybe Aguero is a better option than City mids but is 40-50% dearer...

    What's not to like?!

Anyone else trying it? Thinking of starting Rooney alongside and put Aguero in when fit? As I will also go with Depay for Utd over.

    Any thoughts?

Just wanted other's views on whether this is a viable tactic as I am still on 3-5-2 Ritchie/Ighalo rotation.

Unless you're planning on keeping your game week 1 squad for the entire season this doesn't necessarily matter.

The bigger question would be did Ivan outscore Costa when they were both playing?

I'm going for a 3-5-2, just not with that specific rotation.

I see more possibilities and value in the midfield with the forward options shrinking.

Midfields dominate the BPS compared to strikers.

Also, impossible to predict which promoted striker will do well so if you have both of those (as in your case) you are more likely to get a price rise from 1 out of those cheap promoted strikers that can score a goal or two compared to those awful 4.5 mid selections.

I have gone for a Deeney/Ritchie rotation, purely because I want Aguero and Benteke eventually. I also think Ritchie will outscore Wilson. My other four midfielders Fab, Walcott, Depay, Sterling, although I might play about with that still.

I think it has strong potential and crucially doesn't mean I'm filling my bench with players I don't want to play, which seems to be the alternate strategy at the moment (Wanyama, Targett bench for example).

the RMT surgery video got me thinking about walcott, here's an idea proposal.

start with him as a 1 week punt, with the possibility to remain if he stays in the starting lineup (as imo walcott + starts = points). it seems we should get decent clues about his starting prospects for gw1, and right now they look positive.

if he flops or you just dont want the weekly doubt after gw1 when amongst other things alexis could be back in the squad there are a wealth of options to switch to with that 9mil. also there are some very interesting downgrades, and downgrades you wouldn't be missing out on really by starting with walcott as they have tough gw1 fixtures e.g chadli (mun), ayew (che), payet (ars), siggy (che), henderson (stk). maybe we'll find out in gw1 henderson is or isnt on pens etc. that mata is or isnt on pens. that depay is an amazing/terrible number 10.

i've just swapped chadli for walcott, with some tweking elsewhere. chadli had been in my team since the very first draft. this is a serious idea!

Exactly how I tend to play it....decided going with out Walcott (despite all the uncertainty) was just too dull.

Time to return to playing this game for the right reasons......enjoy the high & lows, rather than trudging through the ranks one at a time.

Walcott definitely an educated risk GW1, think I'll be going for him.

Can't believe you've taken Chadli out though!

apart from rooney, benteke, hazard (and chadli previously) it changes every day any way. with deulofeu hamstrung wondering if mirallas is another gw1 punt who can then be swapped to chadli/ayew/henderson

So much love for Ritchie. Is he really worth the punt seeing as he's in a newly promoted side?

Bournemouth will be this years Swansea/Southampton success story. Expect them to finish in a comfortable mid-table position, playing nice stuff and creating loads of chances. I got to see them a few times last season and they're a fine team, of which Ritchie is the protagonist.

Not only is he in my squad any staying there until the end most likely, he's also my captain for GW1. Risky, but AVL at home, Bournemouth really do have the potential to put 3 or 4 past them in my opinion.

Pick two of these for the first 6 gameweeks

    Darmian
    Clyne
    Shaw
    Cresswell

Also would go Darmian and Clyne out of that list, but if you offered me Jenkinson rather than Cresswell I might go for him instead of Clyne.

    Hazard – Ozil – Milner – Chadli – Surman

    Aguero – Rooney – Wilson

What do you think of this eggs in one basket 3 gameweek only team!

    Pantilimon/Hennessey
    Fonte, van Aanholt, Francis
    Sterling, Mané, Cazorla, Özil, Walcott
    Rooney, Lukaku
    (Grabban, Williams, Jenkinson)

Basically hoping Sunderland keep 1 or 2 cleaines in their 3 easy games

Southampton do well in their easy games

Arsenal smash it..... or im doomed

    Lukaku -> Sakho after GW1

I'll downgrade Terry and Mert to 4.5 rotation defs and invest in Attack for the first 4-5 GW's. Hard to expect much Clean Sheets so early..
