In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we assess our captaincy options. This includes the various ways you can change your captain and also incorporates our preferred strategy up until the end of September. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the armband

Fantasy managers are handed ONE swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Friday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Thursday. This is different from last season, to take into account Friday matches, which occurs in Gameweek 2 when Villa host United. The trick here, of course, is to have your captained player featuring early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player who takes to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player you selected as your captain for the Sunday/Monday should ideally play next week on the Saturday.

Banking

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap – for example your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday look appealing. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to use your swap after the fixtures but before the current Gameweek has finished (best to wait up until Thursday evening in case of injuries etc) to set yourself up for the incoming rounds of fixtures choosing a player who features early of course.

Transferring Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and acquire a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with fixtures also on the Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, and have multiple captains in a given round of matches.

Playing the Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for international or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps, as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and so be more adventurous with your armband choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we assess each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity and so having Sergio Aguero as my one skipper for the week could outperform using transfers to have Sadio Mane twice, for example – again, it’s a judgement call and can go either way. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and not end up stuck with an unwanted armband choice and forced into a transfer. As always, though, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our captain plan

In truth, this season is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to captain strategy – with the way that fixtures have fallen, we’re rarely afforded a strong Saturday/Sunday rotation. Here we bring you the most cautious approach we could find that still uses premium options from the top teams; this is without using any transfers, so misses out on quite a few opportunities for additional captains. Nonetheless, we think it’s a good blue print to use as a starting point, allowing you to add in extra captains at your discretion.

Following this means that as long as you have a player from Arsenal, Man United and Man City, you should have no issues navigating the first eight Gameweeks. As already mentioned, there are several blank fixtures, whereby using a transfer or targeting a player from a “lesser team” that has good Saturday to Sunday to Saturday rotation will result in more captains but with a possible loss in quality. This is probably the hardest part of the Sky game to get right – whether to take the plunge and spend transfers for extra captains or hide behind the sofa and hope playing safe works out. In the end it comes down to a judgement call and a little luck.

If you have followed our articles up until now and you add this plan to your repertoire you should be armed with all you need for a successful season.

Mane, Walcott, Sterling, Rooney, Benteke, Wilson

That's pretty similar to a team I concocted, same front 3, but slightly different midfield. No Hazard is an issue, but my draft has Fabregas who I view as a more than capable replacement, for now.

Rather than spending the 1st 3 weeks making transfers that are restricted to releasing funds for Aguero, decided to create a team with Aguero from the start (means no Silva and no Arsenal mids)

    Schmeichel/(Schwarzer)
    Mert, Ivan, Mings, (Angella), (Targett)
Haz & Fab, Milner, Ritchie, (Wanyama)
    Aguero, Benteke, Sakho

      Probably the last friendly line-up.

For me though, it was when I did some digging and discovered that he was a regular end of last season (on loan), and has been rewarded with a permanent contract. He's almost certainly their best defender. I think Kaboul has been signed to replace the aging O'Shea, but as captain, he may still start a few.

I'm guessing that a couple of people started putting him in RMTs, and it just snowballed as a heard thing.

For many years I've wondered what would happen if half a dozen people started putting Shane Long in their RMTs with no other explanation. Would it catch on? probably.....

Out of interest why is everyone so intent on building a strategy around getting Aguero in? Injury prone, playing for a team that have had a lousy pre-season. For 13.0m you need to be consistently banging them in, and even then you can justify a lesser priced striker as long as the value you make up is put to good use elsewhere (see RVP a couple of seasons ago).

I'm a little perplexed by it to be honest.

Seriously though, when he's not broken, he will bang them in every week. He's pretty much in a different class to ever other player in the game at the moment, I'd pout him with Henry, Ronaldo and Suarez (one category above the likes of Bale, RVP and Hazard). If he's fit, he needs to be in your team. If he's not fit, sell him and wait until he's fit again.

        1. David Davros

I guess the point is that for 5m less you can have someone like Pelle in. Scored 50 points less last season. I'd be curious to know the differential in points between Hazard and the best 6.5m midfielder - I think it's probably more.

Sure you could be flippant and say get both but I think that's sort of missing the point. This game is about maximising your points per value across the pitch, right? For 13.0 he would need to be banging them in every week as par. Spread that value around a few players and I reckon there is a good chance you get a stronger return.

Just as pertinent, do you think City will be scoring as many this season? I think they've had a lousy pre-season and seem to be going through a transition.

No, its about getting the highest possible score for a budget, not the same thing. plus there's the captaincy issue to think about.

              • 16 Years
              10 years, 8 months ago

Captaincy issue I'll give you. Not sure about your other point though - I think they are exactly the same thing. You have a limited budget, how do you spend that to get the most points - You have the same budget and you need to pick 15 players. At that point you are all about marginal points and marginal value.

Pelle is no replacement for Aguero. If you don't feel like getting Aguero don't but that will be a constant headache and personally I wouldn't go trough all that pain.

You've completely failed to address the point I've made.

Not saying I'm not getting him - I'm just trying to see whether the overwhelming majority that seem to be thinking about it have the arguments to back it up.

You didn't make any worthwhile points. The arguments to get him are quite obvious and going against the wind on this one is just too risky.

Point was that a marginal 5.0m could quite easily get you more points in midfield than it would in attack. Perfectly valid but clearly over your head.

Not over my head but you don't seem to comprehend that you will need to find the right players to deliver for your extra money which will be a constant struggle with different players firing every week. Aguero however is a certain points scorer who you can captain every week of course there will be weeks when he blanks but there will also be weeks when he scores hat tricks.

As I said earlier we won't know for sure who's right until the end of the season so if you feel like you'll get better points for your money elsewhere go for it. I for one can't even understand that I have to argue about this.

That's why people will have him while he's fit and drop him when injured and I'd say he bangs them in consistently the best scoring rate in PL history is quite telling.

Help needed on the final tinker of my GW1 team (injuries permitting) please

Best DF/MF combo (totaling 10m) to have alongside these players

    Schmeichel Butland

    Koscielny Bassong Williams Azpicuileta

    Ozil Hazard Cazorla Mahrez

    Rooney Kane Wilson

MF has to rotate with Mahrez and/or Wilson if possible

I don't get the hate for rotating mids/fwds..

For example Sinclair and Defoe have blue every week and cost £10.5m

Will a £4.5 bench warmer and £6m playing every week score more? Doubt it...and when you need your sub through injury or other no show? I know who I'd rather have coming on

Not against it, just against it in my context. One cheap forward but my next cheapest mid is 8.0 and my second cheapest striker is 8.5. Can't see rotation working without a restructure.

Yes, I'd say that its very likely that a £6m striker will outscore Defoe.

Villa's midfield is anyone's guess especially with Grealish and Veretout in there now.

Its feasible that, for example, Ritchie on his own virtually outscores both Defoe and Sinclair.

      I'm here!

Didn't think here were enough big hitters. I dunno... Lens and Sinclair just make it look weak, and pretty risky. Personally, I'd go with a 4.5 and upgrade the other one. But that's just me. And I'm no expert!

        Thanks for the clarification!
Yeah I know, it's not Hazard / Depay / Walcott / Sterling, but otherwise my front 3 will suffer I fear. I could go Benteke > Deeney and have more firepower in midfield, but i think Benteke will make up for that. If the Lens / Sinclair partnership doesnt work out, I'll go 4.5 & Chadli; but dont rate Chadli higher than Lens / Sinclair personally.
