Seven years since leaving the club after the expiry of his loan deal, Saint Etienne winger Max Gradel returns to Championship winners Bournemouth on a permanent basis. The Ivory Coast international revealed that he received offers from a bevy of bigger clubs but elected to join the Cherries by virtue of his strong relationship with manager Eddie Howe:

“I am so happy. I had a great time here before so I’m very excited to be back. I had offers for more money and bigger clubs but in football you have to go where you will be happy. There were other options, like to play Champions League football in Russia, but I decided to come here because I like Eddie a lot. Of course he’s a good manager but on top of that he’s a good person and we have a good relationship. I trust him and I am looking forward to working with him.”

The History

An Ivory Coast native, Gradel spent four months on trial to Arsenal before signing up to Leicester City’s youth academy. After penning a professional contract at the King Power Stadium in May 2007, he was sent out on loan to Bournemouth that August, where he notched nine goals in 34 outings, earning a new deal at Leicester in the process.

Gradel made his senior league bow for the Foxes in the opening fixture of the 2008/09 League One campaign. The Ivorian featured in all but three of the East Midlands outfit’s first 15 league fixtures but was restricted to 12 outings thereafter.

Deemed surplus to requirements the following term, Gradel teamed up with Leeds United on loan in October 2009. He tallied three goals in 14 appearances, before handing in a transfer request to push through a permanent deal in the January window. The former Lewisham College graduate finished the season with six goals and as many assists in just 1335 minutes of pitch time.

After chalking up 18 goals and seven assists in the 2010/11 Championship season, Gradel sought a fresh challenge with Ligue 1 club Saint Etienne. During his four years with the Greens, he amassed 31 goals and 14 assists in 101 appearances, carding an eye-catching 17 goals and four assists in the previous campaign.

Since making his debut for Ivory Coast in June 2011, Gradel has evolved into a regular starter on the international stage. The Cherries’ new boy notched two goals and one assist for the Elephants during their victorious run in the 2015 African Cup of Nations, sitting out just one group tie.

The Prospects

Discussing his new signing with the local press, Cherries boss Howe was clearly thrilled to re-acquire the in-demand Ivorian:

“I am delighted to have brought someone of Max’s quality and calibre to the football club. Having worked with him when I was a young coach and he was a young player, we built up a strong relationship. I have followed his career ever since and never thought I would be fortunate enough to be able to sign him permanently for this club. I think it is a real achievement to be able to bring him in and attract him to the club. Hopefully he will enjoy his second time here. I have no doubts that [the fans] will rekindle their love for him.”

The versatile Gradel is accustomed to playing on either flank, having been deployed on the wings in a 4-2-3-1 and as a wide forward in a 4-3-3, though he also played through the middle on occasion last term. With Matt Ritchie holding a firm grip on the right wing berth, Gradel could either take up the left flank berth at the expense of Christian Atsu and Marc Pugh, though he could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Callum Wilson, with his keen eye for goal moving him ahead of the likes of new boy Lee Tomlin and Yann Kermorgant. Certainly, given the number of suitors he turned down, it seems highly unlikely he’s teamed up with Howe again to take on the role of bench warmer.

Following a steady start to the 2014/15 Ligue 1 campaign that harvested four goals and two assists in 18 appearances, Gradel ignited upon his return from the African Cup of Nations: his final 13 outings served up 13 goals and two assists. Aside from drawing just two blanks over that stretch, Gradel capped off the season with back-to-back braces (his third and fourth that season), underlining the potential for explosive Fantasy returns.

Priced identically to Matt Ritchie (6.0), Gradel presents an intriguing alternative for those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Scotland international in the mid-price bracket. Ritchie netted two fewer goals than Gradel yet far outstripped his new team-mate with regards to assists (17) and key passes (98 compared to 45).

Given the inferior quality of competition in England’s second tier, though, it’s perhaps more pertinent to delve into the underlying statistics, with Gradel boasting a superior shot accuracy (38.2% compared to 35.1%) and conversion rate (16.6% compared to 9.9%). That being said, Ritchie’s share of free-kicks, corners and possibly penalties bolsters his Fantasy appeal.

The Cherries’ fixtures prior to a Gameweek 9 visit to Manchester City (AVL, liv, whu, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT) look conducive to attacking returns and, given that the south coast club lead the Championship scoring charts last term, with 98 goals accrued, they’ll be confident of building an early momentum in their maiden top-flight season.

I watched him for a few years at Birmingham, he's a "tryer" is probably the most oft repeated phrase I've heard about him.

I don't want to help anyone out too much or anything but, seriously, everyone, GET AGUERO NOW.

Given that he has trained, given that he's Sergio Aguero, it doesn't really matter that he is more hungover than the rest of the team. 50% to start IMO; 80% to get at least 15 minutes.

I don't see the point in making Aguero transfer plans when we're just talking about one week tops (and it really will be just one week) when he has any chance at all of not playing at all.

I'm even half-tempted to captain the man.

Those of you with transfer plans beware... you're a 0.1 cost rise and an injury away from a big old 12.0-pointer transfer round just to fix the problems in your team and get Aguero in at the same time. It's just the sort of 'plan' which'll give you a twitchy wildcard finger by half-time on Saturday.

Unless Pelli comes out tomorrow and rules out Aguero for 3 weeks (which he won't, unless something else has happened), he's going in and staying in.

Have subs who'll def play on Saturday, take the risk and DO IT... or you are asking for Kunishment.

Agree on the price rise, which is why I have left a 0.5 buffer to get him. Still think he can wait till week 3 or 4 though. His second game is against Chelsea (who will play for a 1-0). Rooney is guaranteed 90 mins in the meantime against Villa...

As my team stands I'm going with a light defence, big 4 mid and Sinclair 5th mid, if Sinclair fires early will downgrade one of the big four mids to a 4.5 to fund Aguero

        Ha, Kunishment, I like.

All the same, I'm not convinced. He'll probably do the same as last season, where he came off the bench for the first few games before coming back in gameweek 3-4. It's not even like the fixtures are that favourable - wba CHE eve does not appeal.

It will definitely make things a whole lot easier than trying to work out a massive downgrade probably in the midfield just to do Rooney or whoever to Aguero

yeah but that means it's my first two transfers already made, meaning if anyone in my team is unexpectedly not playing or only making bench appearances then I've got to take a hit to get rid of him.

overperforming Aguero would be something amazing. Aguero performing at his usual level is enough for me personally.

get players that dont make bench appearances then. Oh but you don't have any money, right you have Kun (also for a bench appearence, nice).

I'm risking Depay and Walcott to begin with because both can be extremely explosive. I'd rather volatile players with a high potential than consistent plodders.

the whole thing is very explosive indeed, but might work out.
As for me, I prefered Sterling + Ramsey to these two.
That being said, Schneiderlin scored more than Depay during pre season.

                    lucky pre-season doesn't count towards FPL 😛

to be honest I am very aware of it all going to sh!t and needing to use a wildcard early doors but its a risk Im willing to take to get ahead early doors.

But he's MASSIVELY overpriced. Pair him with any other forward in the game and it won't be as good as what's available for the same amount of money.

E.g. Aguero + 4.5m benchwarmer is the same as Giroud + Benteke or Kane + Pelle. Which pairings are going to score more!?!

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 8 months ago

Aguero (C) scores more than either pairing regardless of who you (C) in the pairings.

          2x Aguero > 3x solid striker

not if your 4.5 is playing for 2 ppg. this'd likely be 4.5 fwd bench warmer with a formation change to 4.5 mid playing but that'd still get you the same 2 points.

That's not how it works though, you can still pair him with a premium forward and look for value elsewhere. He is also a great captain choice. There aren't many other players who have the potential to score 4 goals in a game. Go without at your peril.

Leaving last season aside Everton have always been very good at the back. Yes this time it is Roberto at the helm but the players are still the old ones with Stones the young oustanding CB. They will get a lot of CSs at home imo. You are going to be surprised.

              • 12 Years
              10 years, 8 months ago

they'll do better than last year for sure because that was just a massive underperformance, but I dont see them being more than a 55-60 point team unless they bring in some actual creativity to put at 10 behind Lukaku rather than relying on wing backs to be creative

Against wba Che and eve, I do not think Kun will score more than 2 goals across the 3 fixtures. Those defences do not allow a hat ful of goals. He might still rise by 0.1 but I am prepared to risk that and wait till GW3 to get him. My other players who I get with Kun money for GW 1-3 will be worth the money for me.

I haven't had a bet for a couple of years but these look like decent offers...

Paddy Power and Betfair have promotions on their top Premier League goalscorer markets:

Betfair: Bet £25 on top goalscorer and get a £5 free bet per game that the player you've bet on scores in for all games in August, September and October. (The first 11 GWs for most teams)

Paddy Power: Bet £20 (or £10 e/w) on top goalscorer and get a £2 free bet for each goal the player you've bet on scores for the whole season.

The Paddy Power offer is obviously better value. Who would you bet on for each offer?

      I'm thinking:
      Betfair: Rooney
      Paddy Power: Aguero

Wollscheid may well start but he has been abysmal in pre-season according to the Stoke forum. Go for Muniesa instead

Andreu looks like a benchwarmer right now, but I like the pick.

Tancredi Palmeri tweeting about Bale to united .

Basically he said untied offerend 80m, Madrid said give us Di Maria and money.

Di Maria rejected the chance to go back insisted he wanted PSG.

United are mulling over another big bid

Had three Bournemouth players in my team at one point. I had to take a look at myself and ask, "Will this really lead you to glory?"

Will wait until GW3 until I consider Gradel or other attacking options. Then again, there are still two days to go.

Anyway, could you say a few words about this team?

        Fabianski (Butland)
        Mertesacker Azpillicueta Francis (Richards Bassong)
        Hazard Mata Milner Ozil (Sinclair)
        Rooney Pellé Diouf

If he was 4.5 he'd be one of the first names in my teams. I'm still considering him.

I guess none of you are tempted by Gradel ? If he keeps up that scoring record and if Ligue 1 is at least as competitive as the Championship he'll outscore Ritchie this season. I just put him in for Ritchie. It's all about those 5 points for goals. Bournemouth might struggle to score many in the Premier League but they also might do a Southampton and storm it.

Maybe a little too expensive, I compared him to Tadic and felt that they should've been priced the same. Might be worth a punt though.

Also the first game is one where he probably (hopefully) won't get many points. Having said that i've got Sakho on the bench instead of reserving him for my first transfer.
