With West Brom and City set to play out the Gameweek tonight, the injuries have largely been kept to a minimum in this opening round of fixtures. Arsenal’s in-form right-back is expected to return imminently, though Everton are set to be without Leighton Baines after the England defender’s ankle injury played up again.

Arsenal
Hector Bellerin missed Arsenal’s home defeat by West Ham yesterday but is likely to return by the weekend, according to Arsene Wenger:

“Bellerin has a slight muscular injury, it’s only a question of days.”

The club’s official twitter account rolled out an update on Olivier Giroud after the Frenchman sustained a head knock in the 2-0 defeat. Arsenal have moved to deny reports that Giroud was knocked unconscious, with the forward returning home as normal after the encounter.

Everton
The Toffees are set to be without Leighton Baines for a period of time after the left-back suffered a recurrence of the ankle injury that forced him to miss the end of last season. Roberto Martinez issued the following update:

“Everything had been perfect in Leighton’s programme and he worked extremely hard in pre-season. He looked refreshed, he looked strong and he look at a really, really good level. Then, in training, he blocks a ball and it hits him exactly in the same area where he had surgery, with the unfortunate result that he’s going to be out for a while. It’s one of those tough moments that you have to take as a player but he knows we’re going to help him immensely, everyone will support him and we have to make the most of his other role, which is to be part of the group and be a leader while he’s getting back to full fitness.”

Martinez also went on to discuss Kevin Mirallas’ fitness after the Belgian was subbed off in the second period, having picked up a knock in a challenge with Watford’s Valon Behrami:

“He wanted to stay on the pitch, clearly. But he had a really nasty tackle and we’re going to be assessing him in the next 48 hours. He tried to stay on, he couldn’t and now we’ll see what the extent of the injury is.”

Leicester
Claudio Ranieri eased fears over an injury to Ritchie de Laet after the Foxes weekend win over Sunderland. Post-match, the Italian confirmed the right-back was withdrawn due to cramp, rather than injury.

Man United
Phil Jones missed United’s home win over Spurs due to blood clotting. The centre-half is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of three weeks.

Newcastle
Steve McClaren suggested that Vurnon Anita’s back injury may not be as bad as first feared after the midfielder was stretchered off against Southampton yesterday:

“Vurnon is ok and he’s walking around normally. We will assess it this week.”

Stoke City
Mark Hughes confirmed he had to replace left-back Erik Pieters at the break against Liverpool yesterday due to illness:

“Erik was ill at half-time and wasn’t able to come back out for the second half. That is something that will resolve itself very quickly I’m sure, but I haven’t had an update from the medical staff yet. Touch wood he will be ok to join in training with the rest of the guys early next week.”

The Potters boss went on to admit that Bojan Krkic is still around a fortnight away from making a top-flight return. The Spaniard continues to step up his fitness after being sidelined since January with a knee injury:

“He definitely needs another couple of weeks because he isn’t quite up to speed for Premier League football just yet. He would have loved to have been involved I’m sure, but we want to make sure he is fit and ready when we do bring him back into the squad. I’m sure it won’t be long until he is ready and available to go again.”

Swansea
Ki Sung-Yeung is a slight doubt after picking up a hamstring problem towards the end of the first-half of Saturday’s draw at Chelsea. Garry Monk remains optimistic on his prospects of making the Gameweek 2 home clash with Newcastle:

“Ki has a slight twinge in his hamstring, but it is nothing serious and hopefully he will be ready for the next game”.

The Swans have also confirmed that Jefferson Montero was withdrawn due to cramp in the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge after tormenting Branislav Ivanovic for much of the match.

Tottenham
Danny Rose was unavailable for the trip to Old Trafford after sustaining a “slight quad injury”, allowing Ben Davies to start at left-back.

Agree, 6.5 is the same as Mitrovic and Rondon is slightly more proven - more seasons in the top flight of Russia & Spain.

Good signing from WBA, he's got the lot - power, pace, aerial ability.

Are we reckoning that Smalling is first choice RCB when fit? Seems to be to me... Rojo/Blind/Shaw fighting over LB/LCB, Jones always injured! Goal threat with Smalling too.

Seriously considering downgrading Ivan to him before he rises.. I should have stuck with him but people talked me out of it!

I think he is even though Jones was injured. LvG had good things to say about him last year, and he did really well towards the end of last season.

I've just noticed the top 2 scorers for GW1 (86pts) have both used chips!!! Don FC triple captained Mahrez (genius or luck?!) and Lord of the Ings bench boosted (adding an extra 22 points)

Soooo... who else has played their chips in GW1?! Surely utter madness to use up so early and not make most of DGW's or have they misinterpreted the idea of only using them ONCE a season?!

Makes me feel a bit better about my own score... and I've got mine to use during DGW towards the end of the season. Thats why ML scores are going to be inaccurate unless u study who has chipped and deduct their bonus points.

Worked with Mahrez!! Gonna take some almighty luck to triple captain a week they happen to pick up big points. Even DGW might not see even Haz/Rooney/Aguero pick up 15pts

Aguero double gameweek triple captain has to have a better chance than mahrez luck triple. how many do you suppose triple capped a player who did nothing? its a game of percentages.

yeah so? let them. best they do it randomly on a whim and mostly fail. Thats what seperate's us from the casuals. Having said that, this year will most likely see a chipped team winning every individual gameweek.

My rational behind him was that if it went pear shaped I could always used an FT. I plan to WC early anyway, so team is still fluid.

Problem was I banking on AW being without Sanhez and Giroud and this is simply not the case. Plus there's the Arsenal lottery as welll...

*i out on the wrong article sorry xxx*

Stick or twist, plus who we reckon is best captain

Rutland (don't know why i went with the trend but oh well better than courtois and Cech haha)
Azpi -- mert -- huth -- jenkinson -- Coates (pick 3 unless 4 at the back)
    Wally 🙁 -- hazard -- Mahrez -- Milner -- Westwood
    PELLE -- KANE -- ROONEY

Got 43 points this week , lucky I had Mahrez my baby - so any transfers need doing x

    Butland Ruddy
    Kolarov Kos Huth Francis Cedric
    Walcott Hazard Depay Mahrez Bentaleb
    Rooney Kane Sahko

How does Kun get into this team? (keeping Arsenal midfield coverage)

Since you don't have 'coverage' with Wally you might just do Wally to Cabaye and Roo to Kun.

    Myhill - (Hennessy)
    Cedric - Gomez - Coates - (Bassong - Huth)
    Haz - Caz - Mane - Milner - (Fletcher)
    Aguero - Rooney (C) - Deeney

Very tempted by Payet but I'm currently leaning towards sticking. Am I right to save?

Why don't teams get their transfers sorted in the break, it must be really disruptive losing players hand having to find replacements after the season has started. Not to mention the players who lose their place to new arrivals and having to settle the new boys in. The window should open on the first day of the break and close the day before the new season imo. 😕

I kinda agree, but what happens if your team suffers 5 injuries and you have no time to change or something bizarre , but I agree

      1. Captain Goodwin
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 8 months ago

Then the loan rules should be able to cover situations like this. That number of injuries would usually be down to poor medical staff/physios/training methods/facilities, which are all things the club can control. Tough s**t if you push your players too hard - you shouldn't be able to sign people willy nilly and then end up with ridiculous selection headaches when everyone gets fit.

Not all leagues start and finish at the same time though, so it would mess up trying to transfer people from La Liga or the Bundesliga for example.

Not really, if a players window is open, he can only join another club whose window is still open

          • 11 Years

But then it might be unfair as some teams could still do business for a player and some teams couldn't.

Having competitive games to actually put your team to a real test is handy, then your can dabble in the market if needs be.

I doubt teams want to get their transfers sorted out this late. It's just the way the market goes, players hold off for best possible offers, agents are greedy little bastar*s.

Well if you are talking about them getting in your FPL team, it doesn't really matter if they are on free kicks or pens because they won't get a penalty each week.
