After rolling out the first instalment of this week’s Watchlist articles with a look at the goalkeepers and defenders yesterday, this afternoon we switch attention to our recommended midfielders for the next four to six Gameweeks. Our backing of Southampton assets continues with Sadio Mane moving to the top of our rankings, while Alexis Sanchez replaces Theo Walcott as our preferred Arsenal midfield option after Sunday’s surprising turn of events at the Emirates.

Despite failing to register attacking returns in Southampton’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle, our faith in Sadio Mane is undiminished. Available at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Mane – who fired three goal attempts at St James’ Park last Sunday – should be able to deliver with Saints’ upcoming fixtures (EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN, SWA) pretty favourable, particularly over the next three weeks.

West Ham’s Dimitri Payet capped an impressive Premier League debut with an assist for Cheikhou Kouyate’s goal, and with four strong home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the next six, the Hammers’ big summer signing looks primed for further attacking returns. With the majority of set-piece duties in his locker, the 7.5-priced France international looks to have significant assist potential, although he did only create two chances against the Gunners.

After a fairly quiet display against Swansea, and with some tough fixtures (mci, wba, CPL, eve, ARS) coming up, Eden Hazard may struggle to justify his 11.5 price tag in FPL over the coming weeks. The Belgian international has started previous Premier League seasons slowly, and with Jose Mourinho expected to travel to the Etihad with a defensive mindset, Hazard’s huge 55.8% ownership may start getting itchy feet if he fails to produce attacking points once again. Indeed, over 30,000 FPL bosses have already transferred out last season’s PFA Player of the Year.

David Silva was one of only a few big hitters to register attacking returns in the opening Gameweek, providing the assist for Vincent Kompany’s goal, while he was unfortunate not to be credited with some involvement in City’s opener. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have two more difficult fixtures (CHE, eve) before the schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, with Silva looking a decent double-up option with Sergio Aguero from that point onwards.

After a 29-minute appearance off the bench against West Ham on Sunday, Alexis Sanchez could be thrust back into the starting XI for the trip to Selhurst Park this weekend. The Chilean staggeringly led all midfielders for penalty box touches in Gameweek 1 and also attempted three shots from inside the box. Although the former Barcelona man will set us back a hefty 11.0 in FPL, the fixtures (cpl, LIV, new, STO) look fairly kind for Arsene Wenger’s side. Expect a further Watchlist climb if he starts and shines against Palace.

Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez was one of the big stories from the opening Gameweek, scoring twice and bringing in a haul of 15 points. The Algeria international was part of our initial Watchlist rankings last week after an impressive pre-season, but few could have predicted such an explosive performance from the midfielder, who has already risen to 5.6 in FPL. With the fixture list (whm, TOT, bou, AVL, sto) still pretty favourable, this bandwagon looks well justified, with Mahrez looking one of the strongest options among the budget midfielders.

An impressive statistical performance – albeit with no attacking returns – in the 1-0 defeat to Man United has seen Christian Eriksen replace Nacer Chadli as our preferred Tottenham midfield option. Chadli’s price tag of 7.0 in FPL should still provide good value, but if your budget allows it, we think Eriksen is the one to own ahead of some appealing fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CPL, MCI) for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

While Raheem Sterling failed to deliver against West Brom on Monday night, the quality of City’s attacking performance as a team has us convinced the points will soon start flowing for the 9.0-priced midfielder. As previously mentioned with David Silva, the Citizens’ next two fixtures may prove prohibitive in terms of scoring goals, but in all likelihood, the temptation to carry at least two City attacking assets into the Gameweek 4 home encounter against Watford is something that will be on the minds of many Fantasy managers as we begin to plan for the next few matches. If you can’t double on Silva and Aguero, Sterling should be in your sights.

Although there is little to choose between Liverpool midfield trio Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Philippe Coutinho, we’re backing the later after he was handed the “number ten” role against Stoke on Sunday. The Brazilian schemer is more expensive at 8.0 in FPL, with the English duo coming in at 7.0, but if Henderson and Milner continue in the double-pivot, their chances of registering attacking points appear more limited ahead of four very strong Anfield encounters (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the next six Gameweeks.

Premier League newcomers Andre Ayew and Jeremain Lens delivered attacking returns on the opening weekend, and both have the fixtures to continue rewarding their owners. Ayew, available at 7.0 in FPL, scored in Swansea’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea, and also took all three bonus points, as he looks to replicate last year’s ten-goal haul for Marseille. The Swans’ upcoming schedule (NEW, sun, MUN, wat, EVE, sot) should give the Ghana attacker the perfect platform to build on an impressive debut.

It’s probably fair to say that Lens didn’t quite make the same impression as Ayew last weekend, mainly because of Sunderland’s terrible first half performance against Leicester. The Dutch international did manage to bag an assist last weekend and, coming in at 6.5 in FPL, could warrant some consideration with the schedule (NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou) pretty kind to Dick Advocaat’s men.

Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie (6.0) served up a frustrating blank for his 5% ownership against Aston Villa on the opening day, and only managed to create one chance for his team-mates. With trips to Liverpool and West Ham up next for the Cherries, goals could be hard to come by in the short-term, although home matches against Leicester and Sunderland, sandwiching an away encounter at Norwich, mean we should perhaps be patient with our Bournemouth assets as Eddie Howe’s men come to terms with the rigours of the top flight.

Arsenal’s lacklustre performance against West Ham has seen Mesut Ozil slide towards the bottom of our ladder. The Germany international did create four chances and register two goal attempts in the 2-0 defeat, and should keep his place in the starting XI, although after such a flat display, Wenger could well ring the changes for the match against Crystal Palace. The former Real Madrid man, priced at 8.5 in FPL, will need to produce the goods soon, otherwise a mass exodus could be on the cards once City’s schedule turns from Gameweek 4 onwards.

One of the biggest disappointments from the opening weekend may well have been performance from Memphis Depay. The Dutch international struggled to make an impact against Spurs, and was substituted after 68 minutes. While the 8.5-rated midfielder’s starting spot doesn’t look in any doubt for now, like Ozil, he’ll have to convince his 24% ownership he’s worth retaining, with United’s fixtures after the matches against Aston Villa and Newcastle turning unfavourable (swa, LIV, sot).

I've seen a lot of abuse towards Mourinho for excluding the fit doctor from the bench. I think he's a genius, taking the attention away from the players poor performance so the media focus on that instead. What's everyone's view?

I can't believe the media are lapping this up. He will have had a quiet word to his medical staff to tell them he has complete confidence in them but will be doing this to distract from Chelsea's poor form (Charity Shield and Swansea).

It's pathetic. The diversion idea is meant to be to take blame, or attention, himself, not completely humiliate a member of staff and make her a scapegoat when she was just doing her job. He can't get away with this for much longer, the man's a complete embarrassment.

Sometimes, because of cup games and called off games, some teams will play twice in a week. This means if you have players in those teams, you have an extra chance to score points.

Excellent article and backs up my feeling on that idea.
Bench boost and 2-5-3 arent any better on a dgw.
Only triple captain is a dgw specific chip

    4. Narcissist
      • 12 Years

I find it hard to make an argument against playing it in a DGW.

Just having an additional keeper playing two games could make a significant impact, without even considering the rest of the bench.

The chips could also be used to cause an upset in a cup game I suppose, depending on what your aims for the year are.

With a regular week bench boost, you get 4 extra point sets
To get any in addition (apart from one keeper) youd need a squad full of dgwers
Very unlikely to happen and if it does, you end up selling some key players who are on single gameweek that week

You don't need a squad full of DGWers.
You'll still need to keep a few big-hitters in your squad, and you may wish to bench some of them for the DGW, but they should still score good points.

I think people recall the time when Everton were a bit of a bogey team for City. But that is going back to the days when Moyes was still in charge. I think they could batter them.

Why exactly do most think Leceister would be an easy game for Westham? This is how I see it:

    1) Most of us picked Leceister options based on their end of season form last year which was pretty impressive both offensively and defensively. If they are to continue in the same vein and there are signs of that from GW1, it is far from a straight forward game for Westham.

    2) The main reason Leceister conceded 2 to Sunderland is that they were cruising and therefore relaxed a bit after the 3rd goal. Leceister will not being playing at home against a poor Sunderland and will not be leading 3-0 by the 30th minute away to Westham. They should be far more solid and far less on the attack at Upton Park.

    3) Just as Westham are in a confident mode, the same applies to Leceister.

    4) Ranieri is an Italian manager. Leceister should improve defensively under him in general (at least theoritically speaking)

I expect this to be an even game and a tight one as well. A 1-0 or 1-1 or 2-1 at best. I don't see it as a big win for Westham so I don't understand the exagerrated talk of captaining Payet or Sakho or doubling up. If you have 1, it should be enough.

I am not sure what Di Canio's record defensively is as a manager but what I meant applies to decent managers and I am not sure Di Canio is one. Ranieri on the other hand is a decent manager who coaches some big teams.

no1 is expecting them to thrash leicester. many people are swayed by the impressive performance of payet against arsenal and his assist record..sakho looks dangerous too imo. Again those who is getting in payet are mostly those who are selling walcott or some non-performing players..and payet seems the best transfer to make in the short term.

as for captaining, do people really feel benteke/rooney will be a much better option than sakho?nothing much from gw1 shows that utd and pool will thrash villa and bournemouth too.

I think Leceister will be difficult to break down as they will probably sit back and counter attack. Westham will not have the spaces they had in the Arsenal game.

As for captaining, to be fair both Rooney and Benteke had difficult GW1 fixtures. Their GW2 fixtures are a different story.

I said in the end that if you have 1 or plan to get one of Sakho/Payet then fine but I am against doubling up now based on 1 game. As for captaining, it is very risky and could hurt given the much better captains in Rooey, Benteke, Arsenal mids, Gomis to list a few.

I would add 5) That West Ham have had mixed performances so far this season, failing to beat very average European sides with a first XI in some cases. They are now the favourites to win Saturday rather than underdogs which will up the expectancy somewhat. Which West Ham turn up - the ones at Arsenal or at the Maltese side?

I have Sakho and happy for him to have the next 2 home games - but I'm not expecting that much an expect to lose him soon after...

Only after getting complacent for going 3-0 up in 30 minutes. If the game had stayed 0-0 in the first half, do you think the same would have happened. I doubt.

Theoretically the lack of Cambiasso will hurt Leicester's defensive potential, but yeah it's by no means a gimme for West Ham. Should be a good game. If West Ham stick with their diamond it will be interesting to see the tactical battle between that and Leicester's new 4-4-2.

Although, depending on the rest of your team, you may want to keep Sterling. He has great fixtures after the Chelsea game, and you want to be loading up on City, not taking them out. At the very least I would want Aguero + Yaya/Silva/Sterling.

Our current leader is only 634th.

The top hundred is full of teams that played a chip in GW

Nearly 300k teams played their chip in GW1.

You think it's Walters who will lose his place? I'd guess he's the least at risk.

Everybody else. Adam in particular, but maybe he was not expected to keep his place anyway. But in fact, from experience I trust that you know better and take your word on it.

I guess Adam could also be at risk. Hadn't considered the possibilty of Shaqiri being central. Don't think Walters will be completely pushed out the team, but don't think he'll get in their 1st choice xi after a few weeks when all the signings have settled.

I think Shaqiri will mainly play central, or possibly on left.

Unless they really desperately need a new guy on right, but that would mean that Walters was at risk anyway.

Trying to decide between two captain options and really struggling here. I imagine many are in the same boat:

    A) Rooney: Played up top in the first week and encouragingly managed to stay in the box and not drop deep. If Utd manage to create some chances surely he has a decent chance to get on the scoresheet. A lot of this will depend on Sherwood's approach as well. The Spurs game was a cagey affair and I think Villa could try and attack United. If they do there could be a lot of space opening up.

    B) Benteke: Liverpool are still adjusting to his style but there's no doubt he's a good player. You would have to think Liverpool will create a few more chances against Bournemouth? He's definitely capable.

For me the fact that Rooney is playing on Friday is irrelevant. The choice should be made on points potential alone.

    Thoughts?

    Would value the FFS consensus...

    A: Benteke & Ayew
    B: Gomis & Yaya

I'm guessing B, but I already have Tekkers so would require an extra transfer

    Team is currently:

    Ruddy (Butland)
Azpi | Kos | Cedric (Huth | Saylor)
Haz | Wally | Mane | Milner (Anya)
    Rooney | Benteke | Sakho

Current plan is to transition (if ‘A’) Haz/Wally/Roo to Sanchez/Ayew/Kun

    or if ‘B’) from Haz/Wally/Roo/Tekkers to Sanchez/Yaya/Kun/Gomis

Ta very much in advance for any advice
