For the second consecutive Gameweek, Man United edged their way to three points in the most unspectacular style, easily keeping hosts Aston Villa at bay to claim a 1-0 win. Adnan Januzaj was the unlikely hero, bought into the side by Louis van Gaal in the “number ten” role, he took his opportunity with a crafty first-half strike. Meanwhile, our Captain Poll leader Wayne Rooney disappointed his horde of owners with a listless display, as the United back four claimed further returns. Here’s the notes on Friday’s encounter…

Januzaj Stakes a Claim

With rumours of a loan move to Sunderland gathering pace, Van Gaal handed the young Belgian a central attacking role behind Rooney for the Villa Park visit. Januzaj’s first-half strike certainly strengthened his claim for a place in the first XI, with his introduction allowing Memphis Depay to take up the left flank berth he occupied for PSV last season.

At just 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Januzaj would clearly be a steal if he can nail down a regular role, though his withdrawal just before the hour mark perhaps highlights Van Gaal’s reluctance to extend his pitch time – the young Belgian started only seven times for the Red Devils in 2014/15. Furthermore, the club’s interest in Barcelona’s Pedro raises further question marks over Januzaj’s place in the overall pecking order.

Lacklustre Rooney Fails to Spark

They may be sitting pretty at the top of the table but, from a Fantasy perspective, it’s fair to say the Old Trafford outfit have failed to impress in the final third.

Van Gaal’s men managed a mere two shots on target last night and, bearing in mind they scored with their only attempt on target at home to Spurs, the lack of spark is a major concern for high-ownership assets such as Wayne Rooney (41%) and Depay (23%). Juan Mata, meanwhile, remains an under-the-radar option – owned by just 7% of Fantasy managers, he grabbed the assist and maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Certainly, last night’s decision to shift Depay to the left will give Van Gaal food for thought. Whilst the summer signing fired an eye-catching seven attempts, Rooney failed to produce a single shot over the 90 minutes.

Given that City’s schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, Rooney and Depay may well be set for significant sales once next week’s home clash with Newcastle is out of the way, as we look to find space for the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva in our 15-man squads. Rooney is already suffering heavy sales, soaring to the summit of the FPL “transfers out” rankings overnight.

Darmian and the Defence Hold Firm

Whilst their forwards toil, the United defence chalked up a second straight clean sheet after keeping Tim Sherwood’s side at bay. The visitors restricted Villa to a single shot on target, with Sergio Romero once again benefitting from David de Gea’s absence to offer the value route into their backline at just 5.0. With uncertainty over the Spaniard’s future, though, Matteo Darmian looks the most profitable pick here; the summer signing – who’s risen to 5.6 – has now picked up a couple of bonus points in each of the first two Gameweeks. Clashes against Swansea, Liverpool, Southampton and Arsenal in the five fixtures directly after the Newcastle match suggests his short-term prospects are perhaps less enticing, though. Quite frankly, United’s rearguard has impressed but has yet to face an opponent that’s provided a sustained and direct threat on goal.

It feels really weird being a saturday morning and not being able to tinker with/mess up my team.

    What do we think:

    A) Love it
    B) Hate it

    I'm going for B

I kinda like it, although if I hadn't spent so much time assessing and making my transfer midweek I may have missed making it. I didn't even realise until 7pm after work yesterday deadline had gone.

I'm actually not. Seems a bit crazy to me considering in seasons where I could save it I didn't, and now I have to use it pre Christmas I'm thinking about not.

I can get Aguero in by GW4 for a maximum of one hit. I do however don't want to get lost behind on team value, and if players I know I'll want start rising I may jump on.

Right now I, potentially looking to keep it until some fixtures turn but it burns a hole in my pocket and I'll likely use it 🙂

Well I just took a look at your team again and we have the same team structure and a lot of thhe same players. But I would be tempted to save myself the hit to bring Aguero in, and drop the Chelsea and Arsenal defenders for WBA en MCI defender for example. But still a long way ahead ofcourse 😀

Both Fulham and Brighton should be much improved this season with Brighton being harder to beat. Low scoring draw or home win for me.

Brentford's experiment hasn't got off to the best of starts and I think Bristol City will give it a good go this season. Home win wouldn't be the biggest surprise.

Harry Kane needs to come to United. He say's he want to be a Spurs legand but he already is after 1 season by Spurs standards. The best he can hope for is winning a Coca Cola cup at a kids birthday party.

Otamendi is refusing to train with Valencia, at the moment it looks like he might sign for City or United.

Sorry but United fans have been fantastic at Old Trafford during the Moyes era and LVG's first season. Real Madrid fans would have booed the place down, Arsenal and Chelsea fans would have done the same to. Nobody boos at Old Trafford mate, our record attendances have been there season after season with or without a medal or cup.

It's ridiculous to say he's 'a legend by Spurs standards already' because Spurs are a big club and could easily finish above United this season.

          Nah...I'm not so sure.

Pellegrini won't take any chances with him.

If Pelle thinks that Aguero has adequate fitness and there're no chances of him getting injured then Aguero starts. It could be vs Chelsea and it could also be vs Watford in gw 5.

Really depends on how Aguero is atm fitness wise.

        Ah ultimate....

I haven't quite worked that out yet as my captains have scored rubbish 🙂 would still depend on others fixtures etc but I think I'd keep if it was a brace or goal and assist.

If there was just a goal I'd think about switching if next player had a much better fixture.

How often do you choose your 'head' over 'heart' when making FF decisions?

This week for me was a prime example- Ayew of Payet?

Head = Ayew (stats were decent, goal or not)

Heart = Payet (played FAR better than stats showed)

    .....

Normally go 'heart' , and often get it wrong. This week cold hard stats.

    How about you?

Well I went with my head at the start of the season and picked Rooney as he was more assured of a start than Costa and had some pretty good fixtures, despite thinking I didn't really like having no him in my team as I don't rate him at all and he has never gotten me points during the stints I've owned him. So I downgraded Costa and bought Rooney and then 'upgraded' yaya to sterling with the extra 0.5 and look where that got me.

It's not their slew of play. They were very good last season for a while. Now is more of a grinding out results when posting badly style.

It is the current style for a reason I believe. If LVG plays slow, dull football it forces other teams into something similar and United can grind out a 1-0 win. A big issue for United last season were dropped points in the first run of games, so I reckon he's out to remedy that now.

Schneiderlin doing a good job holding the fort too.
Defenders don't need to be top class with him there.

Who is tripling on United defence? And who should I get to rotate for the games against Arsenal, L'pool and Watford?

annoying that starsports has purchased rights for bundesliga.

      Where is Newcastle match?

      No.

Just get Mangala. Way better fixtures and decent goal threat from set pieces.
