Liverpool climb to joint-third in the top flight after a second successive 1-0 win. Christian Benteke grabs his first goal for the Anfield outfit, whilst Jordan Henderson supplies the assist before being forced off with a foot problem. Here’s the notes from Monday’s floodlit encounter…

Benteke Fires Reds To Victory

Christian Benteke came up trumps at the second time of asking, opening his Liverpool account by virtue of a controversial goal. Although Bournemouth fans will lament the linesman’s decision not to raise the offside flag after Philippe Coutinho seemingly interfered with play, Benteke’s 40% ownership were delighted to bank the Belgian’s nine-point haul in an otherwise low-scoring Gameweek.

Benteke’s prospects are mixed over the next five Gameweeks (ars, WHU, mun, NOR, AVL), with two challenging road trips balanced out by three enticing home encounters. Nonetheless, the former Aston Villa hitman will certainly fancy his chances to score at Old Trafford, having netted in both league ties against Manchester United last term.

The Reds were far from commanding but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory and clean sheet. Naturally, Fantasy managers will be drawn towards their rearguard assets, with Joe Gomez (4.6) presenting the cheapest option of the current starters. On that note, the difficulty of Liverpool’s next trio of fixtures and the threat of rotation from Alberto Moreno diminishes the 18-year-old’s appeal slightly.

Philippe Coutinho failed to register in back-to-back matches, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying: no player in the league fashioned more attempts at goal (eight) than the Brazilian playmaker in Gameweek 2, emphasising his status as the most potent goal threat in the Reds’ midfield. Of course, Roberto Firmino – who replaced Jordon Ibe in the 70th minute – harbours the potential to steal that crown away from his compatriot when he’s afforded a starting berth.

Jordan Henderson delivered his first attacking returns of the campaign with the assist for Benteke’s close-range strike. His 20.1% ownership couldn’t cheer for long, however, after the Reds captain was replaced by Emre Can at the 52-minute mark due to a foot injury. Brendan Rodgers revealed after the match that Henderson missed training during the week because of this complaint:

“He’s had a problem with the bottom of his foot. He hadn’t trained for part of the week, he was taking some painkillers with it. He did ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to try it, he wanted to give it a go, but you could see he was limited in his running. He did great for us in the period of time that he was on but it’s important that we get victories and it’s important that we have fit players on the field and unfortunately for him he was just in too much pain.”

Ritchie Impresses Despite Cherries Defeat

After carding a 1-0 defeat for the second week running, Bournemouth join Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in the relegation zone. The Cherries turned out a spirited performance but failed to test Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet with enough regularity, tallying just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the Cherries’ positive play funnelled through winger Matt Ritchie (5.9), who ranked fourth for attempts at goal (five) among midfielders this Gameweek and struck the upright with one of his efforts. In light of the south coast club’s excellent upcoming run of fixtures (whm, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), the Scotsman’s 4% ownership may well be reluctant to cut their losses just yet.

Budget forward Callum Wilson was less impressive up front alongside Joshua King, mustering just one shot all night. With places in our three-man frontlines at a premium and having already dropped to 5.4 overnight, Wilson seems unlikely to survive the chop among those managers with Wildcards active.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his opening day line-up, drafting in both Eunan O’Kane and Max Gradel for their first starts, with Dan Gosling and Marc Pugh dropping to the bench. While Wilson disappointed, it was King who made way on the hour-mark as Howe looked to revive fortunes. New signing Lee Tomlin was introduced for King and he could now threaten to work his way into the starting line-up for the trip to West Ham in Gameweek 3. At the back, popular budget option, Tyrone Mings, was again benched with Charlie Daniels retaining the left-back berth.

Is anyone keeping Walcott for another week? - he's becoming even more of a differential due to people shipping him, so weirdly its more appealing to hold tight for 1 final week?

No real idea but isn't he more suited for the Liverpool match? (always seems a big game player to me)

I have Silva, Aguero, Snaches and Giroud.
No Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United or Spurs attackers.

I keep seeing people talk about coverage, but is it not really hyped up?

I asked earlier today about who would do better out of Giroud and Benteke over the coming weeks.
    Most prefered Giroud.
But i am quite positive that if people were to rate my team they would say that both Sanchez AND Giroud is to much ars, and i should get a Chelsea etc attacker.

    Thoughts?

      I agree mate.

The reason most people say you supposedly shouldn't pick Sakho & Payet or Gomis & Ayew, for example, is because you're relying on two players from the same team scoring each week, which instinctively feels unlikely.

However, think of it this way... What if you choose Sakho/Ayew, and it's Gomis/Payet that tear up FPL!?

Fact is you just need to pick the players you think will score the most points. I suppose the value of spreading your players comes if you have a squad built to allow for attacking rotation, and you can therefore drop you Swansea player when they go to the Etihad, but most teams I see are pretty loaded for a strong first XI, so is that realistically a factor?

      Those are my thoughts.

          Darmian on WC?

I’m not too keen on United’s defence given their fixtures atm.
NEW and SUN the only 2 CSs i see in their next 8, otherwise they face:
swa, LIV, sot, ars, eve, MCY, so not a fan of Darmian.

Dawson/Williams are better options, imo. Both are much better than Cedric as well.

Utd have conceded the least goals of any team since November by some distance. And I really think they are solid as a rock with their new central midfield. I think having a Man U def could be the new Chelsea def.

With my rivals WCing, and my bad start to the season, the points hits are just going to put me further behind and having a worse team than the WCers. Think now is the time.

Has anyone given much thought to the All Out Attack chip yet? I'm struggling to work out when it will be optimal to play it.

    1) DGW (the other 2 chips surely take priority for any DGWs though)
    2) Christmas when fielding a 2-5-3 might be the only way to circumvent injuries and suspension.
    3) Keep it simple and just pick a week where your defence has poor fixtures and your 5th mid a decent one.

Hey Cpt, how did your team get on last night?

We lost 4-1 🙠and that was the score after 40 minutes 😕 league chances over for us

We played the local rival and they are dead last but as always these type of games is the hardest. We went 0-1 as the keeper made a huge mistake and missed lots of chances but in the 93rd minute we managed to equalize and it ended 1-1. So the dream is still alive allthough we lost some dear points.
Are you completely without chance or is there still a mathematical chance?

Mathematically we're still in with a shout, but not realistic.

12 points behind with 10 games left, will be very tough. Winning last night was realistically the only chance. Getting top 3 is vital now for a European spot, so here's hoping. If we end up 4th we'll be relying on winning the domestic cup or hoping someone from the top 3 win it to give 4th Europe.

Oh well that's football 😕 good luck with your team 🙂

Jonas Olsson at 4.5 too risky an option on WC? Lescott just dropped? No reported injury?

For next week, what is the best downgrade to fund Rooney -> Aguero?

    A) Kosc (new) -> Williams (sun) (already have Fabianski) or another 5.0 or 4.5 (already have Cedric)

    B) Mane (NOR) -> Ayew (MUN)

    C) Benteke (WHM) -> Gomis (SUN)

    D) Hazard (CPL) -> Silva (WAT) or Sanchez (new)

    Cheers!

        Sorry. Gomis should be MUN*.

        Does that change anything?

Watch Liverpool v Bournemouth last night and I found that Francis rarely put some crosses last night.

Is he really 'that' attacking like people suggest or last night was his day off?

He couldn't be too attacking playing away to Liverpool, that would be naive.

This is my current team: most years i wildcard around gameweek 14 and have never done it this early however i feel there may be too many names in here that need transferring out urgently

    Cech/ Schmeichel

    Clyne/ IVANOVIC/ CEDRIC/ BAKER/ SIMPSON

    STERLING/ HAZARD/ Mané/ Ritchie/ Wanyama

    DEENEY/ ROONEY/ Benteke

The players i have put in captials can definately go and i am happy to get rid of benteke and even Mane, Cech and Schmeichel also.
Is this enough to justify a wildcard?

Why get rid of Deeney,he will score goals. If there's more than 5 players you believe need urgently out then just wildcard.

    Courtois (McCarthey)
    Darmian, Richards, Huth, Davies, X (1.Cedric, 2.Targett)
    Silva, Sanchez, Mane, Ritchie, Barry
    Aguero, Benteke, X (1.Deeney, 2.Berahino)

So yes I know I've cheaped out on the defense. But whats my best option, Cedric/Deeney or Targett/Berahino.. I could also probably downgrade one 4.5 def to a 4.0 and have Kolarov/Deeney

Is Berahino going to do way more business than Deeney?
