Liverpool climb to joint-third in the top flight after a second successive 1-0 win. Christian Benteke grabs his first goal for the Anfield outfit, whilst Jordan Henderson supplies the assist before being forced off with a foot problem. Here’s the notes from Monday’s floodlit encounter…

Benteke Fires Reds To Victory

Christian Benteke came up trumps at the second time of asking, opening his Liverpool account by virtue of a controversial goal. Although Bournemouth fans will lament the linesman’s decision not to raise the offside flag after Philippe Coutinho seemingly interfered with play, Benteke’s 40% ownership were delighted to bank the Belgian’s nine-point haul in an otherwise low-scoring Gameweek.

Benteke’s prospects are mixed over the next five Gameweeks (ars, WHU, mun, NOR, AVL), with two challenging road trips balanced out by three enticing home encounters. Nonetheless, the former Aston Villa hitman will certainly fancy his chances to score at Old Trafford, having netted in both league ties against Manchester United last term.

The Reds were far from commanding but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory and clean sheet. Naturally, Fantasy managers will be drawn towards their rearguard assets, with Joe Gomez (4.6) presenting the cheapest option of the current starters. On that note, the difficulty of Liverpool’s next trio of fixtures and the threat of rotation from Alberto Moreno diminishes the 18-year-old’s appeal slightly.

Philippe Coutinho failed to register in back-to-back matches, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying: no player in the league fashioned more attempts at goal (eight) than the Brazilian playmaker in Gameweek 2, emphasising his status as the most potent goal threat in the Reds’ midfield. Of course, Roberto Firmino – who replaced Jordon Ibe in the 70th minute – harbours the potential to steal that crown away from his compatriot when he’s afforded a starting berth.

Jordan Henderson delivered his first attacking returns of the campaign with the assist for Benteke’s close-range strike. His 20.1% ownership couldn’t cheer for long, however, after the Reds captain was replaced by Emre Can at the 52-minute mark due to a foot injury. Brendan Rodgers revealed after the match that Henderson missed training during the week because of this complaint:

“He’s had a problem with the bottom of his foot. He hadn’t trained for part of the week, he was taking some painkillers with it. He did ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to try it, he wanted to give it a go, but you could see he was limited in his running. He did great for us in the period of time that he was on but it’s important that we get victories and it’s important that we have fit players on the field and unfortunately for him he was just in too much pain.”

Ritchie Impresses Despite Cherries Defeat

After carding a 1-0 defeat for the second week running, Bournemouth join Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in the relegation zone. The Cherries turned out a spirited performance but failed to test Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet with enough regularity, tallying just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the Cherries’ positive play funnelled through winger Matt Ritchie (5.9), who ranked fourth for attempts at goal (five) among midfielders this Gameweek and struck the upright with one of his efforts. In light of the south coast club’s excellent upcoming run of fixtures (whm, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), the Scotsman’s 4% ownership may well be reluctant to cut their losses just yet.

Budget forward Callum Wilson was less impressive up front alongside Joshua King, mustering just one shot all night. With places in our three-man frontlines at a premium and having already dropped to 5.4 overnight, Wilson seems unlikely to survive the chop among those managers with Wildcards active.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his opening day line-up, drafting in both Eunan O’Kane and Max Gradel for their first starts, with Dan Gosling and Marc Pugh dropping to the bench. While Wilson disappointed, it was King who made way on the hour-mark as Howe looked to revive fortunes. New signing Lee Tomlin was introduced for King and he could now threaten to work his way into the starting line-up for the trip to West Ham in Gameweek 3. At the back, popular budget option, Tyrone Mings, was again benched with Charlie Daniels retaining the left-back berth.

I found him to stop/start for me last year. He scored well, but not consistently, and I never kept the bottle to retain him. I missed a number of bumper weeks after weeks and weeks of blanks. Don't want the headache this year personally.

Still really liking the idea of 3-5-2 WC team with Mahrez 5th mid playing every week and 4.5 bench fodder up front. Can anyone persuade me otherwise? I just see Mahrez as a better option than the likes of Sakho, Diouf, Wilson etc. It will make my team less flexible though which is a problem.

I'm on a WC too and think it makes more sense to choose between payet and ayew, and stick someone like westwood in as a £4.5m. Use the extra money in defence where decent £4.5m options are thin on the ground.

      There''l soon be a time when you'd want a frontline of Aguero - Rooney/Costa/Sturridge -Benteke/Giroud.

You'd then wish you had a WC and may have to take multiple hits to get there.

      Keep it flexible imo.

No there won't, Costa will have his stretch = easy downgrade from Aguero if he gets hurt.

Giroud will never be more important than Sanchez.

Rooney will likely drop to midfield soon.

Sturridge's 5 matches that he will start don't concern me.

Benteke is the only player I will try to bring in when Liverpool fixtures turn and he shows promise.

RP Save a FT they said.. Hold wildcard they said. Another shocker and I have to WC to stay in the game. Please can I have some thoughts there are a few options…

DEF is is solid (I think)

    Butland McCarthy
    Kolarov Darmian Williams Gomez Targett

Attach there are decisions to be made: (please choose)

    A) Ayew Hazard Sanchez Chadli Mahrez
    Aguero Sakho Ighalo

    B) Ayew Hazard Sanchez Mahrez (Westwood + pick up 0.5mil from defence)
    Aguero Kane Ighalo

    C) Ayew Silva Sanchez Mane Mahrez
    Aguero Sakho Ighalo

    D)Silva Sanchez Chadli Payet Mahrez
    Aguero Gomis Ighalo

I actually think Kane has looked lively and been unlucky but I also think I really should keep Hazard as Chelsea cover instead of doubling up with Silva. I pref Payet but Sakho shoulf fire eventually (surely). Im aware of Kolarov risk but he looks too good to leave out. Gomis/Ayew is very difficult decision also. PLEASE HELP?

Kolarov is, whatever anyone tells you this week, a rotation risk, as always.
      Targett in a WC team?!?!
Also wouldn't want Butland as my only keeper (Speroni back very soon).

    I'm well happy with my start for a change 🙂 126 points overall (50GW1 & 76GW2)

Overall rank 14,030! (36 in the FFS league :-))

This site has been invaluable for things like the cheap defensive and goalkeeper rotations!

I hadnt used any FT's until this week and i've used 3 yesterday so taking a 4 point hit, Walcott forced me into that really!! Got rid of Benteke, Walcott and Sterling this week, had originally planned walcott>6.5 Rooney>Aguero but I decided I wanted to keep Rooney now as he loves torturing my beloved Toon boys 🙁

Team this week with my 3 transfers made (before aguero increase & wally 2nd drop yesterday so rather smug)

    ----------------Guzan------------------
    ---------Williams Huth Mert--------
    Hazard Mata Mahrez Westwood
    ----Aguero Rooney Lakaku------

    Subs: Myhill Wanyama Clyne Saylor

Planning on d/g Rooney maybe back to tekkers after a couple of weeks to get better 4th mid, however i have a feeling Westwood or wanyama might get something in next few weeks! This 'plan' will change about 93784 times. was so tmepted to get rid of haz but ownership scares me.

All opinions very much appreciated! I've been rubbish last few years & really into it this year!

    Ruddy
    Toby // Cedric // Huth
    Haz // Sanchez // Mane // Mahrez
    Kun(c) // Sakho // Gomis

    Rudd // King // Richards // Gomez

Had a horrific start (somewhere around the 2.5mil mark) and got the above team with a -4, .7 ITB.
I know Mane is dropping but better to just lose the .1 and save the wildcard? Could go Mane > Yaya next week if he blanks again.

That depends if Yaya double rise and Mane drops this week.

Hi guys - please rate my team:

    Ruddy Butland
    Kompany Ward Martin Darmian Skrtel
    Ozil Silva Coutinho Januazaj Mahrez
    Aguero Benteke Agbonlahor

Most concerned about Januz and Agbon if I am being honest...
Ken for feedback including any swaps you would make

A few questions burning a hole in my head today:

    1. Ayew & Sakho or Payet & Gomis? Or with Mane likely dropping, Mane & Gomis or Ayew & Pelle?

    2. With Kun as a likely weekly choice for the armband, is Sanchez worth the extra over players like Ramsey/Ozil?

    3. Darmian or Shaw? Both look great options.

    4. Choices at City, is it worth going Toure over Silva for the extra 1.5, is Kolarov worth the risk over a nailed on Kompany?

    5. What's for tea?
