After assessing the teams with the strongest upcoming schedule yesterday, we now shift our focus to assess those sides we should be trying to avoid for the next six Gameweeks.

This should be a particular interest to those Fantasy managers keen to make amends for an inauspicious start to the campaign, and certainly those with Wildcards active.

We find that, while Everton were mightily impressive in their 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday, their fixtures suggest goals and clean sheets will be hard earned in the coming weeks. The Toffees are joined in our group of unfortunates by Steve McClaren’s Newcastle who are on a collision course with all of last season’s top four over their next six matches.

EVERTON

frisking

Roberto Martinez’ side have taken four points from their two matches so far, but with home matches against last season’s top two, and a Merseyside derby also to play at Goodison Park, it could be more difficult for the Toffees in the coming weeks. Away trips to Swansea and West Brom, two of the stronger defensive units outside of the regular top six challengers, could also prove to be tricky assignments.

There have been a number of stand-out performers so far, with Romelu Lukaku (8.1) and Ross Barkley (6.6) both scoring twice and registering an assist in the first two Gameweeks. The Belgian has thrived playing against the top four sides in the past, but with the likes of Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis (7.1) and Stoke’s Mame Biram Diouf (6.5) providing strong options at a slightly cheaper price, it may be too much of a risk to back Lukaku to keep delivering. Barkley is more friendly on the budget, and like his team-mate, is among the top ten players transferred in this week in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

At the back, Phil Jagielka (5.5) and Seamus Coleman (6.0) have ownerships of 21.6% and 13.7% in FPL respectively, and look unlikely to justify their hefty price tags given the quality of attacks heading their way in the upcoming period, while Coleman may also have to be more cautious with his raiding runs from right-back.

NEWCASTLE

frisking

After a promising performance in the 2-2 draw against Southampton, Steve McClaren’s men fell to a lacklustre 2-0 defeat at Swansea last weekend, making it seven consecutive Premier League away defeats for the Magpies, with just one goal scored. Given they have to travel to Man United, West Ham and Man City in the next six, the prospects for Newcastle’s Fantasy assets are severely hampered, particularly bearing in mind that they also face home clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in the same spell.

Papiss Cisse (6,5) scored in that opening weekend draw and also bagged full bonus points but with difficult opponents and the possibility of Aleksandar Mitrovic taking minutes away or even being handed a chance to start, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to significantly add to his tally in the next six Gameweeks. Georginio Wijnaldum was another to find the back of the net against Southampton, but priced at 7.0 in FPL, the likes of West Ham’s Dimitri Payet (7.6) and Swansea’s Andre Ayew (7.1) have both form and fixtures in their favour and look far more appealing mid-price options.

Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet in their last 13 league matches, so while Tim Krul (4.5) and Massadio Haidara (4.5) are kind on the budget, the chances of them registering shut-outs in over the next six appear slim.

CRYSTAL PALACE

frisking

With just two clean sheets from 20 matches under the stewardship of Alan Pardew, the Eagles backline can’t be trusted to provide defensive returns, particularly with clashes against Chelsea, City and Tottenham in the coming weeks.

Joel Ward (4.5) may have collected a ten-point haul against Arsenal thanks to his long-range strike and maximum bonus, but with just two goals from 105 top flight appearances, we can hardly rely upon further attacking returns. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (4.0), like Ward, has seen plenty of investment this week, with over 78,000 transfers in, but with uncertainty surrounding the pecking order at Selhurst Park among the goalkeepers until Julian Speroni returns from his hand injury in the next few weeks, the former QPR stopper represents a risk.

Further forward, Yohan Cabaye’s 12.7% ownership may be looking elsewhere once this weekend’s favourable home clash against Aston Villa is out of the way, while owners of Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie will hold similar concerns. With Connor Wickham, Glenn Murray and Patrick Bamford all vying for the lone striker role in the 4-2-3-1 formation, few will be looking at the Eagles frontline options for now.

ARSENAL

frisking

While it’s difficult to back against the likes of Alexis Sanchez, there’s no doubt Arsenal face some tricky fixtures in the next few weeks. The Gunners entertain Liverpool and Man United at the Emirates, two sides that have yet to concede a goal, while they also have to travel to champions Chelsea and the in-form Leicester.

With Man City’s attackers facing such kind fixtures, there appears to be no need to own more than one Arsenal attacking option over the coming period, with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil looking the leading contenders for that spot. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey (both 8.5) have failed to register attacking returns so far and could find their way out of many Fantasy managers’ 15-man squads, while with Sergio Aguero a “must have” for many FPL bosses, the 9.0-priced Olivier Giroud seems unlikely to attract many suitors, despite his well-taken volley against Palace.

Arsene Wenger’s side have conceded three goals in their two matches so far, and with some tricky fixtures in the next six Gameweeks, the likes of Laurent Koscielny (6.0) and Per Mertesacker (5.5), with ownerships of 16.2% and 15% respectively, may struggle to justify their price tags. Likewise, Petr Cech (5.5) has shown some weaknesses early in his Gunners career and may struggle to accumulate clean sheets in the coming weeks.

BE WARY OF…

Man United
Louis van Gaal’s side have struggled in front of goal so far this term, and with three tricky away fixtures (swa, sot, ars) on the horizon, it’s not a great surprise to see Wayne Rooney topping the transfers out this week, with over 197,000 FPL managers shedding the United skipper. Memphis Depay certainly earned a stay of execution following his shift against Club Brugge on Tuesday, but while both players could deliver against struggling Newcastle this weekend, the need to adequately cover the Man City frontline for their favourable run of fixtures may see United assets sacrificed.

Van Gaal’s men do appear to offer a far tighter unit in defence this season, with back-to-back clean sheets registered against Tottenham and Aston Villa. At this point, it’s looks far safer to back the Red Devils rearguard rather than their attack through this tricky run of fixtures. Matteo Darmian (5.7), who has racked up four bonus points so far, continues to present a worthy target: the Magpies visit, plus the home fixture against Sunderland in Gameweek 7 should prove profitable for the Italian and his defensive team-mate.

Chelsea
Many Fantasy managers put their faith in “big hitters” Branislav Ivanovic (7.0) and Eden Hazard (11.5) at the start of the season, but with a meagre four FPL points between the pair, and some difficult match-ups over the next six Gameweeks, it appears the sizeable funds tied up in the duo could really be better spent elsewhere.

Jose Mourinho’s team sheet will be closely monitored on Sunday given his shock decision to withdraw John Terry at half-time at the Etihad. The Chelsea skipper’s 9.8% ownership are facing an anxious wait to see if he’ll start at the Hawthorns, while there is an outside chance Cesar Azpilicueta could shift to right-back instead of the struggling Ivanovic, with new signing Baba Rahman (6.0) an outside bet to make his debut at left-back.

Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas are other big names at Stamford Bridge enduring tough starts to the new campaign, so until we see the Blues conjure up some stronger performances, it may be best to avoid their expensive Fantasy options for the time being, with their schedule easing from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Wildcarded and this is the plan for Saturday.

    Courtois, McCarthy

    Clyne, Shaw, Kolorov, Richards, Oxford

    Sanchez, Yaya, Depay, Montero, Obertan

    Aguero, Benteke, Defoe

Would love to hear some opinions...

Looks like a pretty solid team and it has. How much do you have in the bank? And how nailed on is Obertan? I think Montero can turn out to be a nice punt.

Currently it would be exact, have Romero, Cabaye and Gomis waiting on a possible price rise before i transfer in this team. Picked Obertan because seems most attacking 4.5 with chance of playing semi-reg. Montero will start scoring I think, got that south american ruthlessness similar to sanchez and suarez imo.

What do you think is the best 4.5 mid, Wanyama for guaranteed start?

Wanyama is destined for a fall to 4.4 soon. I honestly do not know, but I have picked Westwood myself.

    Yeah I'm reposting, and what?

Apart from Kompany and probably Shaw I'm not completely sure who to get for the rest of my defence. Potentially Gomez but I think that might be a very short bandwagon.

What are wildcarders looking at in defence?

Kompany shaw huth richards and Ward. Play premiums most weeks and rotate others. The rotation also covers weeks where shaw and Kompany have bad gameweeks

Im on myhill and ruddy for the moment as I want a west brom defender. If I was going for a 5m defender it would be between west brom and swansea defenders so Williams or dawson.

I'm gambling on Sherwood learning something form his Spurs days and keeping things tighter at the back. On paper Villa don't have a bad defensive team and if they keep clean sheets then Amavi is nailed on for BP because he creates chances with his crossing (too bad the target is Agbonlahor though).

Guess your article concludes with Shaw being the better option than Darmian then?

      I'll be going:

      Kolarov - Darmian/Shaw - Muniesa/Richards - Ward - Huth

As mentioned in the hot topic and in my post earlier, both CRY/LEI/STK and CRY/LEI/AVL looks great as Three way rotations along with a Manchester duo. Will also give me a half decent fixture on the bench every week to cover for Kolarov.

Please RMT my wildcard, I have 3.0 itb. to be able to respond if Silva, Benteke, Kane or someone else explodes. Would it be better to just spend the money, and if so which transfers would you do?

    Ruddy - Butland

    Kolarov - Shaw - Richards - Huth - Francis

    Sanchéz - Yaya - Payet - Mahrez - Westwood

    Agüero - Gomis - Diouf

I'd definately spend the money, 3.0 ITB is just too much IMO. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable owning both Gomis and Diouf (especially Diouf), so would look to bring in a more consistent option here (Kane or Benteke).

Your team looks great though. Almost couldn't tell you had money in the bank at all. Would have a second look at your defensive rotation though, that's all. No good fixture this week and Richards/Francis has great fixtures in the same GWs.

Thanks for responding. 😀 Well, if Diouf doesn't perform I can always bring one of those in. Diouf has excellent fixtures incoming and I feel like that can neutralize the threat from Benteke and Kane?

Good point about the rotation, I'll take another look for sure. Do you have any suggestions about which 3 rotates well among the good 4.5 defs?

I'd rather go down if Diouf outperforms them than to gamble on it from the off, but hey, that's me. Fixtures seems pretty likewise to me given Stoke's tough GW5 fixture.

Yes, keep Richards and Huth in there and change Francis for Ward. Muniesa instead of Richards is also an alternative.

I'm American Pool fan living in Colorado. My wife and I planned a 25th wedding anniversary trip for last April to see Gerrard play at Anfield once in our life. Went on the trip as planned, but a 3 match ban killed our dream. Anyway, on August 1 he played in Denver with the Galaxy. I managed field passes for the warm ups. It is against the rules to try and get an autograph at that time -- obviously -- but I had my #8 Pool jersey and he made a point to come over and sign it. It was clear that he wanted no part of talking to anyone else or signing anything else. Our family calls it the "family heirloom" now. It was brilliant. He was very cool and we understood it was because we didn't have Galaxy crap on.

We got very lucky in a way. The trip was booked but we kept getting jacked around on tickets. Right when I was about to pay about $500 USD per ticket, his little problem 18 seconds into the second half happened, so I held fire on buying the tix to see whether he was even going to be playing. Dodged a real bullet. It would have been hard to explain to my wife why we paid a total of a $1,000 to watch Gerrard watch us watch a Liverpool match on a Monday night against Newcastle.

Gerrard is someone to be proud of. I have smoked cigars with John Elway -- a week after he won his first Super Bowl -- and I can tell you I wouldn't walk across the street to say "hello" to him. Gerrard on the other hand -- again -- PURE CLASS>

Also, Robbie Keane was very cool that night too. It was clear during warm ups that Keane and Gerrard are close. Gerrard was only talking to Keane. But, then again, it could have been that Gerrard was using Keane as a translator because his other teammates could understand the Liverpool accent. Dunno.

RvP had a brilliant run a few years back at Arsenal. I just slapped the armband on him every week. Kept waiting for him to shatter and go off for about 6 weeks of horse placenta, but he just kept going. . . . Life was so easy then . . . and then CR7 or Gerrard before that . . . .

Anyone still for the 4.5/4.0 from the same club strategy even if it didn't turn out great for the first few weeks and on WC?

I really like it as a strategy. Saves me the inevitable bench points while still keeping me covered from injuries, along with the extra funds to spend on outfield players.

Now, given that I'm on WC this week my choice of 'GK club' will obviously be long term. I won't be spending any transfers on GKs unless I get both injured. So the keeper(s) I choose will potentially be playing every week up until my 2nd wildcard.

With that in mind, is it all that crazy to go for Krul/Darlow now? I know the short term fixtures are dreadful, but that's part of the 'GK club' strategy. Should do for lots of saves. Then they have whu, WAT in GW5-6, before the fixtures turn really great from GW9 when Ruddy/Rudd would have been a disaster. Given I'll be in for the long run, I think I have avoid being blinded by the upcoming short term fixture list.

I really do like Schmeichel/Schwarzer aswell, but I want Mahrez + Huth as part of a defensive rotation aswell. Should Leicester keep up the form one might want to do a cheeky double up adding Okazaki or Vardy to the frontline aswell.

So, back to the main question. What 4.5/4.0 are you going for, if using the same strategy as me?

He's been on the bench for the first two gameweeks, and played ahead of Elliot during pre season, so it looks secure. He's an up and coming goalie aswell, don't see Elliot being prefered ahead of him.

What are your opinions on Newcastle duo as opposed to Leicester or Norwich duo?

Still prefer the Butland/McCarthy 4.5/4.0 combo myself. Benching can sometimes be a headache and annoying but I think overall it's likely to come off better. Personal preference.

I had it to begin with but the problem is Norwich and Newcastle wont keep clean sheets. Leicester look best option but I have huth and mahrez lik yourself so csnt get them. Therefore ill go with Rutland or myhill and ruddy. The latter atm

Yeaah can't be sure about but then you'll still have Butland to play from there on out. Not ideal cause you can't replace McCarthy with stoke 4.0 but risk I'm willing to take personally.

Alternatively you could go McCarthy and your 4.5 keeper of choice and then swap out McCarthy for the 4.0 once (or if he even does) he gets dropped.

The option to do Butland->Speroni is there though, should Butland get injured or suspended.

But the key thing for me is minimizing the risk of being forced into doing GK transfers as I'm left with no wildcard for at least 17 GWs. McCarthy being dropped leaves me one minor injury away from having no playing GK.

            1. Volley127
              • 13 Years

My personal opinion is that the butland/mccarthy risk (I say risk, you'd have to say the chances of needing to transfer out butland due to injury must be pretty low anyway) is outweigehd by the potential reward over any other 4.5/4.0 combo.

And even if a -4 transfer is needed to switch keepers, I'd say the move has the potential to make more than that.

Up to you of course! Good luck

      Reasons for Darmian;

      - Looks solid and could give an assist from time to time.

      Reasons for Shaw;

Targett 4.0 for now until Berty is back.

Thinking about playing my wildcard right now too before I lose 0.3 on these drops.. ugh

Ugly drops are about to happen to mine also, good point having already dropped Walcott. I'm still on Coates and co.
Targett should be a good call until the break, them Saints are in a clear mess defensively though.

Just played mine hah. Francis/Caz/Mane all dropping so some money saved there and hoping onto the risers until later.

At least Targett is virtually guaranteed to start, Oxford quite the opposite despite his performance vs Arsenal. It's only been two games also, saints were clearly a pretty sound team last season, and although much of their backline is missing so I'd definitely say 2 games is way too early to judge. Same was being said for Everton after the Watford game and then suddenly they smash Everton away 3-0.

All in all you don't really have any choice in the 4.0 bracket regardless, targett defo the best shout.

Mahrez stats are great but I like Albrighton too, Mahrez edges it for me though.

Gomis/Sakho/Diouf all decent. On Gomis myself atm (pens swing it for me I think) but other two could be good/better too!

Cheers for the lenghty reply, Targett it is then. On Cedric since the beginning and not worth the 5.0 tag for now.
Had 2 FT and used them replacing Wally & Rahim, now seriously considering adding Kun & Memphis via by downgrading defence.
-Diouf looking a great punt, low ownership-great fixtures ahead and pretty decent 3 feeding him (Shaqiri-Afellay-Arnau). Should be my 3rd upfront especially when Gomis has already risen once.

But with Roo (C) and Sakho up front my gut tells me to keep the team as it is for now, despite the drops. Damn I'm in a big dilemma

Also started with Cedric. Rewarded with an assist at least but still a 3 point match (or half a match..) hah.

I was on -8 myself already so wildcard made even more sense to me to cancel out that and save my drops. Kun is pretty vital it seems from almost everyone (myself included) but you might get away with it for another week especially at Goodison, but City do look good. Depay also strongly in my thoughts!

Diouf I was looking at too before I wildcarded and possibly still am. Only worry about him is him getting pushed out wide which I think happened in the last match. Can't say I watch him too much though so hard for me to say.

I'd say go with your gut. Normally the best bet, I was definitely not considering wildcarding until I saw the drops today mind you then my gut was telling me that's my only option!

If not wildcarding now I will have pressed the button at 2 PM. Saturday, hah.
-Myhill & 4.0 at goal and a GK transfer looming for Brom maybe?
-Kun rising rapidly and with Watford at home next week who could resist.
-Cedric to Targett a profitable solution for getting Kun.
-Already mentioned the love for Diouf
                    -Is Albrighton (or any other

Oxford far to risky. Not a given defender yet, could well only play 45 minutes again.
I would go for Kompany - Williams - Kosc

Obiang likely to come back in to the team though which means Oxford could get a 1pt run out from the bench.

Think of all the different points scenarios for Koscielny vs Oxford and it's pretty unlikely to see how the latter can out score the former. No guarantee of a CS for WH anyway.

Suggestion for a captain this weekend, I'm afraid the choice is between...
    Sakho
    Payet
    Eriksen
    Depay

Don't fancy captaining a west ham. And Erikson is such a troll. Newcastle at home is a pretty decent fixure too, plus Janmaat is out so he'll be up against a reserve right back if he plays on the left.

Kolarov played like another City MF and on many set-pieces. His form plus potential attacking and cs points are key reason to own. The bad side - rotation is what usually happened with him.

I want him in my team but I do not own him yet.

However, I got Kompany at 6.1m. He is now 6.2 and still one of the top transfer-in this week. I'm kinda unable to resist jumping to Kolarov before his price rise. Kolarov and 0.6m are tempted.

May anyone help suggesting why I should stick with Kompany please?

You shouldn't. If he hadn't have scored twice no one would be interested.

If you think Kompany will rise again before the deadline, leave the decision until Saturday.

Even if Kolarov rises, you will sell Kompany for a 0.1m profit and then buy Kolarov at 5.6 where his selling value is his real value - you've actually made the 0.1m rather than having an inflated team value.

      - He's the captain.
      - No risk for rotation.
      - Solid defender.
      - Unless you have other defenders in your team that can replace Kolarov's absence, I wouldn't risk it. You will end up punching holes in your wall.

With Kompany you can just keep him in there and not worry about it, potentially grabbing a goal here and there. With Kolarov you'll be biting nails waiting for team news, and even if he keeps his place for now it's a transfer waiting to happen.

That being said I've gone for Kolarov because I find the upside too good to resist.

Thank you all. Less rotation worry seems the best reason for keeping Kompany. But the positive side of Kolarov seems enthusiastic here. 🙂

Anybody ranked 2.37 Mill or over on here?
Finished at the 1K ranking last season.

    Worst start in years.
    Did not see it coming.

Hoping the WC this week will help with gaining rank but fearing a LOT of guys will have the same players.

Think I can forget about a Top Ranking this season 🙂

Glad to be back in the Deadzone here though 🙂
