West Ham’s Mauro Zarate is set to miss the next couple of league matches through injury. The Hammers close in on a deal for Alex Song. Ryan Bertrand remains sidelined for Southampton, United take up pursuit of Sadio Mane, whilst Tim Sherwood waits on the fitness of Villa’s new wide man, Adama Traore.

Zarate sidelined for two matches

Mauro Zarate picked up a knock in training and is now set to miss West Ham’s home trip against Bournemouth and trip to Liverpool.

The Scout Says: With Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia also injured, Slaven Bilic faces a dilemma up front. The Hammers boss utilised a 4-3-1-2 in recent matches, with Zarate alongside Diafra Sakho, and could turn to either Modibo Maiga or Elliot Lee if he decides to continue with the same system. Alternatively, Bilic could well switch to the 4-2-3-1 set-up he regularly employed during pre-season, fielding Dimitri Payet in “the hole” behind lone striker Sakho. The 6.5-priced Senegalese striker already looked like a strong pick-up for the Hammers’ upcoming fixtures, given that they welcome the Cherries and Newcastle to the Boleyn Ground by Gameweek 5. On the flip side, Sakho’s 3% ownership may well be concerned that he’s tallied just two goals in his previous 11 league starts for the Irons.

Song edges closer to Hammers encore

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan revealed that Alex Song is poised to pen a three-year deal with the club subject to him passing a medical:

“He’s a player we all admire and we just hope that the medical shows he’s in a sufficient state for us to gamble. He couldn’t physically pass a medical tomorrow, but if the medics say it’s just a technical thing and he’s only a couple of weeks away you’d take that gamble and hope they’re right. He’s still got two years left on his Barcelona contract and you’re signing a player on a three-year contract, so it’s a huge commitment. He’s a big earner, Alex. He’s injured at the moment, which is something you’ve got to weight up. But we’ve got until September 1st to make a decision.”

The Scout Says: Song’s return to the Irons would raise further doubts over the playing time of Reece Oxford. The 4.1-priced defender emerged as a potential gem by playing from start to finish against Arsenal in Gameweek 1 but was withdrawn after just 45 minutes of the Leicester City clash. Bilic later admitted that the distribution from midfield improved significantly upon the introduction of Oxford’s replacement, Pedro Obiang, suggesting that the 16-year-old could be consigned to bench duty for the time being. Oxford has been drafted in by over 42,000 FPL managers this week but Song’s arrival would surely push him further down the pecking order.

United lodge bid for Mane

Reports surfaced on Wednesday night that Manchester United have tabled a bid for Southampton winger Sadio Mane. Understandably, the official line out of Saints is that the Senegalese international is a key component of their team that they’re not willing to sell.

The Scout Says: In the event that Southampton are swayed by a substantial offer and Mane plots a course to the Red Devils, the former Red Bull Salzburg wide man could be an even more attractive Fantasy prospect at the 8.0 mark. While there’s doubtless greater competition for places at Old Trafford, Mane’s ability to function effectively in any of the three supporting roles in Louis Van Gaal’s 4-2-3-1 formation would hold him in good stead. Furthermore, the Dutch boss recently stated that he prefers to play attack-minded forwards in the number ten berth – rather than midfielders in the mould of Ander Herrera – with Mane certainly fulfilling that remit. Any possible move would perhaps heighten Graziano Pelle’s appeal as the main target for the Saints, whilst the likes of Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini would struggle for minutes at United if Mane made the switch.

Sherwood questions Traore’s fitness

Having watched Adama Traore complete 90 minutes for Aston Villa’s U21 outfit, Tim Sherwood believes that the Barcelona youth product is some way off being fit enough to be considered for first-team action:

“Adama looked very short of fitness to me. He’s going to need the exercise to get himself up to speed. I don’t expect too much too soon but I know exactly what we’ve bought there. He’s a player who’s developing and has got exciting talent for the future of the club. We’re hoping that he can produce something for us immediately but I don’t think we should be putting too much pressure on him.”

The Scout Says: For now, Sherwood has settled on a front three of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Scott Sinclair and Jordan Ayew, but with Rudy Gestede pushing for starts, Jack Grealish expected to make the Crystal Palace trip and Carles Gil not far behind, that’s subject to change over the coming weeks. As such, few Fantasy managers will be eyeing up the Villains’ forward line at present, despite the fact they boast a fixture schedule (cry, SUN, lei, WBA) conducive to attacking returns over the next four Gameweeks.

Koeman admits defence needs time

Ronald Koeman has attributed Southampton’s poor start on the defensive front to the fact that his new-look rearguard needs time to gel. Nonetheless, the Saints boss is confident his latest recruits can flourish if they put in the hours on the training pitch:

“I knew already maybe there was a problem because, if you talk about the defensive strengths of the Southampton team we had last season and a big part of keeping cleans, you are taking about certain positions – goalkeeper, four defenders and two controlling midfield players. Some asked me about Schneiderlin – he was just one of five different players (missing) in those positions last Saturday. It’s normal that you will lose something – the new players need time in that position, the team needs time to develop and have the same strengths as last season. If you’re missing five of the seven, that is one of the reasons we have already got five goals against us in two Premier League games. We need time and we need to develop and learn, we need training sessions.”

Koeman also offered an update on the fitness of Saints’ squad, revealing that Ryan Bertrand won’t be reinstated until after the international break:

“Steven Caulker will come back to the squad. He’s back from illness but the rest is the same. They are progressing well (Jordy and Ryan). I think Ryan needs two weeks more. I hope he will be 100 per cent after international duty. Jordy will then be fit as well and that makes the team stronger.”

The Scout Says: Bertrand’s continued absence will allow the 4.0-priced Matt Targett to temporarily remain as the Saints’ left-back, whilst Caulker’s return will seem him vie with Maya Yoshida for the centre-back berth alongside Jose Fonte. After shipping three at home to Everton, though, Fonte has been sold by over 70,000 FPL managers, with the Saints’ slow start to the season persuading many to look elsewhere. Although the next three fixtures look promising (wat, NOR, wba), it may well be that Fantasy managers reassess Koeman’s outfit once the likes of Bertrand and Clasie are back in the fold as they look to rediscover the form that harvested 15 clean sheets last time around.

I think more forgiving "Hindsight Chips" would have been a better shout. Your player scores a hat trick but your captain has 2 points? You can switch captains as a one off. You benched scored a ton of points? Then wack out the chip that scoops them into your points total.

How about a 'Play Saved Transfers' chip? You can save more than 2 transfers and utilise the chip as a mini WC at some point. After the chip is played everything reverts back to how it is now. And you could still use 2 transfers in a given GW without using the chip.

In my eyes you want your WC defence to be solid as long as possible, because you'll be using your FT on the attackers as they come and go. otherwise you end up taking hits for your defence.

Created this table looking at the best and worst defences so far:

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/10340/

    Some things this could suggest:

Newcastle and Bournemouth look like susceptible to conceding a long range effort:

Payet and Depay could profit here

Palace are amongst the top for chances conceded in the box and headed goal attempts conceded:

    Gestede anyone?

Everton have conceded zero big chances but have conceded he second highest amount of chances in the box.

    Aguero to profit?

Speaking of which it looks like Navas could be the chief threat for an assist for City against Everton as they are concerning chances at left back, no surprise with Baines out.

Newcastle are also weak at left back with 8 chances conceded down that side.

Perhaps its Mata who will benefit instead?

Liverpool have conceded 6 chances down the middle.

    Ozil to take advantage?

Tottenhams chances of a clean sheet look bleak with 5 big chances afforded to their opponents.

With Leicester in great form they could be onto another 3 points here.

Please share anything else you have noticed.

      Great work!

Been looking at this myself for the past few days, and the Newcastle stats really justifies a Depay (C). Not only do they concede a lot of long range efforts, they're also generally the weakest defensive team based on all stats put together. Add the fact that Janmaat is suspended, with no back-up RB into the mix, and I'm genuinely tempted to ignore Aguero in favor of Depay.

Noticed that Watfords general stats are actually quite good. Will be interesting to see if they can keep it up. Kept Everton quiet for a long time at Goodison, and got a cleanie v Brom this week. With Nyom's offensive stats he could be quite a bargain.

Gestede is the interesting one for me. Villa have had little threat going forward but it looks like this fixture could be there best chance for them to score and him do well if he starts of course

With just 2 GW's behind, these may be a function of the opponents. E.g. Newcastle's 8 chances conceded from the LB side, a function of Southampton having their creativity on the right side (Tadic + Cedric).

Really!? Maybe not as a guaranteed starter (for you), but in a rotation strategy there are lots of interesting pairs and sets. I'd include:

        Huth/Morgan
        Francis
        Gomez (albeit now 4.6)
        Muniesa
        Prodl

Have to do you work on the best rotation pairings though.

Same question. I have Aguero and Kompany, wondering whether to add Silva which I can afford, or if it's best to just invest another team with good fixtures (thinking Mane and keeping the extra funds in the bank for flexibility).

Any WCers considering 3-5-2? A wealth of in form mids and a dearth of in form forwards. You can get a cheap starting striker for 5.0, only 0.5 more than a 4.5 mid who will serve the same purpose.

People always talk about flexibility, but it's easy to change in two FTs if a striker hits form.

      Definitely
Not enough high value strikers this season worth the money

Considering for sure. The problem is the flexibility in upgrading that third striker as I will most likely have to downgrade Payet/Ayew to a 4.5 which would only allow me to get a striker of £8m max.

      Could be worth it though.

Very quick, likes to run in behind defences, main goal threat for Bournemouth.

Not saying he's the best pick in the world - already we can see he might struggle due to his team not creating many clear cut chances for him - but he should be good value for 5.4. Worth considering, even if I wouldn't get him yet myself.

Summary of transfer window activity for those looking for double risers.

My take is that because there are sooo many wcs this week there is less "normal" activity which is all the accounts for rises and drops. That is the reason we are not seeing too many of the cheaper players (say 4.5m defenders for example) people actually owning dropping as the only people who have them that are selling are those on wc's. Those not on wcs are selling the higher priced players like Hazard, Rooney and Sterling to make room for Kun and the risers benefiting from this are the cheaper players like Mahrez.

I would estimate there is somewhere between 200k and 250k wild cards active this week and with a lot of those using free transfers scrambling early in the week to get Kun in I don't anticipate as much activity as normal on Friday night. Sound about right?

I've just estimated it by looking at the transfers in and out Doosra, Kun has 250k odd in and I think most would be wc to get him. There was 120k played last week too so not that high really

    2. Ruth_NZ
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 6 months ago

No, less wildcards than that according to Doosra, about 120k played in total so far.

Around 100k this week at a guess.

The biggest tranche of price changes will likely happen on Saturday night when the wildcards unwind. But there will also be a fair few on Friday as late FTs push some players over the threshold.

Yeah it says on home page that there was 120k last week but after two poor weeks I know a lot of people that are wc this week to A) try and recover and B) they want to get Kun in anyway. We'll see I guess.

Did you wc in the end Ruth? I know you said you were in two minds and the original plan was to hold it.

What's your thoughts on wildcard transfers "unwinding". I've heard this term a couple of times now.

I know (we believe) that if 100,000 people transfer out Mane (for example) on a WC they will not affect the NTI metric used to assess his price fluctuation. So, my understanding is if on balance 120,000 in total transferred him out this week (100k via WC), and zero transfers in (to keep this simple) then he will have an NTI of 20,000.

Surely, this isn't going to change post deadline, and those additional 100k of transfers start to impact?

What did you mean by unwind?

A great chip at the end of the season would be Golden goal chip >100 points to the first goalscorer of the final weekend so it would also be random as to what teams would have that goalscorer Def/Mid/Striker could be any one of. Just saying.

    2/2

    2/2

    Aguero / Gomis / Diouf

Made 4 trades this week. Yes, took a hit to bring Aguero in.

Now stuck with the OSCAR situation. Can either play Richards vs Crystal Palace at the back in a 4-3-3 (not preferable) or Ibe in Midfield.

    OR

Take another hit and go Depay or better yet Yaya Toure.
