Our final look back at Gameweek 3 assesses Bournemouth’s hat-trick hero, City’s perfect combination of form and fixtures, and the growing competition for our attention in the Chelsea midfield…

The Player

Callum Wilson’s clinically taken hat-trick at Upton Park earned Bournemouth their first ever win in the Premier league and has sparked a major bandwagon across the Fantasy games.

With many wildcards being wielded, the Cherries lone frontman picked the perfect time to announce himself as a value candidate for our three-man frontlines, with over 166,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers snapping up his services. As Fantasy managers search for this year’s Charlie Austin, who scored 18 times for promoted QPR last term, Wilson has subsequently risen from 5.4 to his original 5.5 starting price.

Delving into the data further, Wilson’s displays suggest he’s a viable option both home and away. Thanks to his weekend showing, the Bournemouth frontman has now scored more away goals than any other player in the top four tiers since the start of last season (15), with Eddie Howe’s team tailor-made to utilise his pace and movement on the counter. The Cherries, meanwhile, have won 17 penalties since the start of last season – three more than any other club in the top four leagues.

With the Upton Park result handing them a major morale boost, Bournemouth can approach their upcoming fixtures with renewed confidence. Eddie Howe’s side racked up 98 goals on their way to winning the Championship last season and with the likes of Simon Francis, Matt Ritchie and Max Gradel all supplying the creativity, Wilson’s growing band of owners have every reason for optimism ahead of four very strong showdowns in the next five (LEI, nor, SUN, WAT).

The Team

After three rounds of fixtures, Manchester City look in ominous form after a 2-0 win at Everton continued their 100% start to the season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men sit at the top of the table, with nine goals scored and a trio of clean sheets accrued, and with an outstanding schedule to follow, many Fantasy managers are scrambling to load up on their main men.

Up next for the Etihad side are four home matches (WAT, WHM, NEW, BOU) allied with trips to Palace and Spurs in the next six Gameweeks which should allow Sergio Aguero the chance to run riot as a captaincy option.

Whilst few will be willing to go into that period without the Argentine on board, the battle is on for our attentions further back. Yaya Toure and David Silva look the chief midfield protagonists, though Raheem Sterling threw his hat in the ring with an assist at Goodison – for those who cannot stretch to Silva’s 10.1 price tag, Sterling is now just 0.1 more expensive than the Ivorian (8.9 to 8.8).

At the back, Aleksandar Kolarov’s 15-point haul against the Toffees moved the left-back to joint-second in the overall FPL standings along with team-mate Vincent Kompany. Although the Belgian is, overall, the more secure pick, Kolarov’s raids down the left and understanding with Sterling have proven a key weapon in the opening three outings. With Gael Clichy still building up his sharpness, there’s a growing belief that Pellegrini will tinker as little as possible as he looks to maintain momentum and move further away from the chasing pack.

The Talking Point

It took Pedro just 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers after opening the scoring in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

By the time the final whistle went at the Hawthorns, the Spaniard had also bagged an assist and maximum bonus points, serving up a 13-point haul on his debut for the defending champions. Given that Eden Hazard has managed just eight points in his first three appearances, it’s easy to see why over 190,000 FPL managers have already snapped up his new team-mate.

Coming in at 9.5 to Hazard’s 11.5, Pedro offers an obvious alternative to the pricier Belgian as a route into Chelsea’s attack. Whilst there’s no questioning Hazard’s Fantasy potential – 14 goals and ten assists in each of the last two seasons says it all – Pedro’s acquisition perhaps indicates that the former Lille man may not be quite as “essential” in many managers’ eyes.

Whilst Hazard ultimately saw off the challenge of Cesc Fabregas as the prime Chelsea midfield pick last year, Pedro brings a far greater goal threat than his compatriot, having chalked up a 15.7% conversion rate in La Liga last term.

Certainly, the weekend showing has had an effect. Although he still sits in over 42% of FPL teams, Hazard has been sold by 404,000 FPL managers since the start of the season – over 110,000 more than any midfielder – and, along with Wayne Rooney, has been identified as the prime source of freeing up cash for our 15-man squads.

Whether Pedro can rival Hazard overall remains to be seen but with a 2.0 difference in cost, the Spaniard’s value for money is clearly set to play a part in how many assess the Chelsea attack from here on in.

Thanks Mann for your reply, would like to get some more opinions on this lot:

    Butland – McCarthy
    Kolarov – Williams – Gomez - Richards – Morgan
    Sanchez – Silva – Payet – Mahrez - Westwood
    Aguero – Benteke – Gomis

0.2 in the bank, 1 FT.

    Should I do
    Benteke - Wilson
    Payet - Pedro (-4)?

    Cheers!

    Mignolet

    Koscielny / Richards / Cedric

    Hazard / Ozil / Chadli / Mahrez

    1 FT, 0.8 banked.

Definitely wouldn't get rid of Ozil. Points are round the corner for him. Sakho to Wilson is what I'd do. Yaya has the better stats so prefer him personally - also will be on pens when Aguero is off

            1. Shifty
              11 years, 1 month ago

Yea Sakho to Wilson would be the more conservative approach. Just worried Aguero isn't enough City attack for Watford and the upcoming run

    1FT, 0.0 in the bank

    Butland (WBA)
Kompany (WAT) Shaw (swa) Richards (SUN)
Silva (WAT) Sanchez (new) Mahrez (bou) Payet (liv)
Aguero (WAT) Gomis (MUN) Diouf (WBA)

    Ruddy, Francis, Westwood, Morgan

    A) Save FT
    B) Payet -> Chadli
    C) Something else

Frustrated with Hazard, his positioning for the last match was awful, could have replaced Azpilicueta.
Had he played in Willian's place, I guess he would have had a Brace to his name.

Now I think, the only options owning a Chelsea attacker is either with Costa or Pedro!

    Is it worth taking a hit to get this;

    Hazard + Pelle --> Costa + Coutinho/Ozil

Pelle underperforming yet again is another issue. With Europa match during the week, I think he'll blank again during week-end again.

Doesn't look like it'll take much effort from him to keep the points ticking over, with the quality of the set pieces he takes. (And quality of player he is)

Just last week he assisted Reid for a goal which was ruled out.

Shame West Ham have very little potential right now, and I hope Nolan doesn't push him outwide again.

I am seriously tempted to triple captain Aguero this week. I agree it should be saved for a DGW, but who would know if that DGW would occur on two tough fixtures?

He'll have Norwich at home, Sunderland at home etc who are all worse defensively than Watford. Why so keen so blow your load soon?

Well the best striker in the league is being supported by the best number 10 in the league (Silva) and the best central mid in PL history (Yaya), both in form.

      Why not?

City have disappointed in the past in these type of games. Aguero won't necessarily get a huge haul. Watford have kept back to back clean sheets.

    So annoying;
My OR was up to the 500,000s yesterday, so when I saw that Arsenal and Liverpool (of whom I have no players) had drawn 0-0, I thought I might have managed to stay in the top 1,000,000.

But no; I still can't break that boundary! What a strange start to the season!

I dropped from 650,000 to 1.1m after the pool game from just owning Ramsey. Seriously how many people have Liverpool defenders!?

With a lot of wildcards being considered and no explosion from hazard yet.
Do we knee jerk onto pedro or swap to sanchez/silva? Or are we just witnessing de ja vu from last season with Haz?

Haz seemed to be creating a lot of space for Pedro on Sunday. I reckon when CL starts Pedro minutes may well be more likely to be rationalised.

He may well price drop this week and especially if he blanks. But a seasoned performer at his age will probably come good sooner rather than later.

Sanchez in particular looked well short of his best still. I'd rather have silva with cash spent elsewhere and move to Sanchez when he's back on it and Arsenals fixtures get better (and city's worse)

Why are people saying its not worth buying Sanchez or Hazard if your going to Captain Aguero each week?
Surly if they are more likely to score points than other players in the game we should have them!?
Is it not better to have more than one captain option also...?

    1. ACCOUNTING ON CHRIS

Problem is they aren't good options atm

      1. Bezzer

Players at that price are so difficult to bring in though, is it not better to have them set ready for the turn of form?

Keep the money ITB ready I guess is the best option, but then it's sitting there not making points...

    2. Pompel

It's a flawed logic that says only the one your going to captain is worth more than 7-8 mill, and for the remaining ones you should maximise points/game/mill. It's a flawed logic, since if you then based on this fill up your team with 7m mids/forwards and 5 mill defenders (exluding cheap bench), you will still have budget to burn.

Silva is a good option in games like The Sun Dream team where he receives points for performance/Star Man. However, in FPL he can be unbelievably frustrating - like the weekend there.

      I like your name.

However I disagree with your statement. Silva is a good pick, Aguero is an excellent pick and standout captaincy option the coming weeks.
